Update to my initial review: I was accused of using the "N" word by one of the bartenders after a drunk black girl got mad that I wouldn't dance (there is no dance floor) with her. She told her friend that I called her a name, her friend (also completely hammered) told the bartender that we called her a name, then he accused my friend and me of using racial slurs and became very hostile towards us. We both looked behind us to see if he was speaking to someone else. He wasn't. So after realizing he was a giant moron for believing some girl and guy that were essentially blackout drunk, he decided to give us a beer, on the house. Yay! I just moved to Ames yesterday and I didn't make it over to WTP until the next day. It was nice inside and best part, I sat by the bar and it didn't smell like spilled liquor! Coming from Iowa City where every bar has that burned out college bar smell, this was a breath of fresh air. The food was good as well. Plenty of good beers on tap and a ton of others in the cooler. The staff was friendly and attentive. Not sure why others have left such negative reviews. I will be a frequent flyer at this place. I really wanted to like this place. Honestly. I've tried a number of times starting when it first opened to my most recent visit a couple weeks ago. But every time I go, I wonder why I came back. The food is okay. I've never personally ordered anything downright awful (though I've been with people who have) and yet I've never really had anything too memorably good either. The Rocking Rib Rolls when they first opened were pretty good, but that's probably not enough to build a business on. The service always seems to be poor - whether its been a night out with the guys or with the wife and kids. No need to beat any one server up over it because my experience is consistently bad. Which is odd, because it never seems to be busy. I can see why College students from the west side of town might like it. It's close, has a decent bar and ok food. But, for my money, there are too many better options around town to allow myself to be let down again. read more

The food is decent and service is ok but can run on slow side. Nothing about this place is spectacular but the two times I've gone it's been an overall ok experience. Last time I went I had the Reuben which was ok, a little dry so had to ask for a side of Thousand island - which they charged me for which kinda sucked. The fries were pretty good. The boneless hot wings were different from anything I've ever had considering they were like chicken strips rather than nuggets which was a cool change. Definitely wouldn't mind going back to try the wings Sunday special. Getting our drinks/beers and the check did take forever. read more

Just had the House Special Traditional wings - really good. Would get them again without a doubt. We also had several burgers and the French dip. Everyone was very happy with their food. We would come back again to eat here! The staff was working hard even though it wasn't crowded. The waitress continued to check on us through our meal. This is one of the better places to get a burger and fries if you are in Ames, and if you live on the west side of Ames this is one of the few restaurants available (as of right now, of course). I always gravitate to the bacon cheesburger which is generally cooked to perfection (I go for medium so that it is a little pink in the middle), and the steak fries can be addicting. read more

I've been here many times, but last night may be my last. It was strictly the food. I ordered a BLT. Basic food. It was underwhelming, to say the least. A good sandwich has balance; this one was too much mayo, a bit of bacon, and barely there tomatoes. We were in a hurry so it wasn't worth bringing it to the attention of our very capable server. I've tried to like West Towne. I've given it about 7 or 8 chances and they just have disappointed me every time. Bartenders? Slow. Service? Collectively the worst in Ames. Food? Below average. Prices? Way higher than they should be. I've had cold wings, burnt burgers, no service, and screwed up bills. My last straw was when my roommates and i went for a beer and an appetizer and there was 3 people at the bar, so with my roommates and I, 6 total people. Two bartenders. 4 o'clock, Friday afternoon. My buddies got appetizers and a beer and I just never got waited on the 20 minutes we were there. Like, nobody ever waited on me when my two friends got served right next me in an empty bar. It's an overpriced sports bar that is only still in business because of its location. I'd recommend every other restaurant and bar in Ames before this one. read more

I like the calm sports bar feel of this place. The food is good and reasonably priced. I do however take a bit of issue with the fact that they nickel and dime you a bit. I've gotten a French dip sandwich, which tastes really good but I needed some more a'ju sauce and they charged me for an entire new one. Not okay. Plus, this latest visit, the cheese balls we ordered had been sitting under the lamp for and while and then our food come about five minutes later and it was just warm. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I would like my food to be somewhat hot when I get it. This place has potential but they need to work on some basics a bit more. read more

Come here for the burgers and fries, and you should leave feeling pretty satisfied. The bacon cheeseburger is my fave, and the fries are pretty tasty, especially if you ask for a side of ranch! :) For as many people that live in West Ames, I'm surprised this place isn't busier at peak times. read more

Two reasons to go here. 1. It is is walking distance to most apartments on the west side of town. 2. They serve beer.....and fries....good fries. The sandwiches are good, but not anything to rave about. You can go and eat and stay where you want to drink with friends. One-stop shopping is the nice thing about WTP. I really like the outdoor seating and the peanut butter burger at West Town Pub. It is a nice stop after a day on the bike or on the way out of town. I would not call the service fast but if you are relaxed and dont mind the noise this is a decent place to get a burger. The food was good but nothing special and our server was good but nothing extraordinary. I came in for lunch but judging by their signs, they have active evenings with karaoke and trivia nights happening weekly. I ordered the California avocado blt burger. Honestly, it just seemed that they were trying too had on the burger and no 1 thing really shone through. The burger was a little on the dry side. I think it would be better with more avocado and thicker cut bacon. It comes with a heap of delicious fries. I think this would be big enough for 2 people to share. read more

Despite the fact that this restaurant is very close to my home, my wife and I have never gotten around to trying it until today. We didn't come away thinking "wow, we have to come here again!" but nor were we dissatisfied. My wife had the "gourmet grilled cheese" sandwich ($7, if I recall correctly), and paid an extra dollar to upgrade her side dish to a salad. The grilled cheese sandwich didn't seem very "gourmet" to either of us, however; it looked and tasted like just a step up from a standard kids' grilled cheese. My wife, did, however, like the salad, and particularly the ranch dressing that she got with it. I was more satisfied with my lunch. I had the patty melt ($10), which was excellent-- a nice large burger, cooked just right, and tasty enough that it didn't require ketchup. Unlike my (thinner) wife, I did not replace my fries with a salad, and they, too, were excellent: they had some kind of batter on them and were deliciously crunchy. In addition to all this, I had, and used, a coupon for a free order of onion rings with a $17 purchase. The onion rings normally sell for 7 dollars, and came in a large basket. They were thin and tasty, but were not terribly distinguished. Our portions were large enough that both of us took about half our food home for leftovers. Our waitress was friendly and efficient, but the folks in the kitchen seemed a bit on the slow side: we placed our order a few minutes after 11 AM and didn't actually get our meals until about half an hour later (though the onion rings did come out earlier). So, bottom line: we had a perfectly pleasant, if not terribly memorable, lunch at reasonable prices; that, and the restaurant's convenient location, insures that we will be back, particularly as winter closes in and we don't want to drive across town for a restaurant meal. The menu here is fairly extensive, and there are lots of other things on it (for example, the margherita flatbread pizza, bacon cheese burger and something called "rib rock 'n rolls") that we are interested in trying. read more

Attended with a group. The service was slow due to being under staffed. Ordered the Cesar Salad with Salmon. The salad was good, but the salmon was raw inside - still cold even though I asked for it to be well done. Sent back the salmon and it still came back way under-cooked. read more

Pub's should bring a local and exciting feeling to the heart once walked inside of to grab a bite to eat. Surprisingly enough, the only feeling that I walked into was nearly cardiac arrest... once sat down at the booth for dinner. Maybe I'm not looking for the perfect place to eat, but something edible is always something I like to consume. Never before have I seen an establishment run the title of being a pub into the ground so hard in my entire life. When we sat down we had a look at the menu and saw items that looked really unique and delicious according to their names. As the pub promises such special choices to choose from, they somehow have forgotten that they have to taste the good to. Me and my friend ordered the Santa Fe Chicken and the Philly Cheese Steak. These two items seemed to be meals that would be really enjoyable for a dinner entree. But after consuming the Santa Fe Chicken, I could only imagine what other creation they managed to form with Witchcraft. Seriously. Whoever decided to cook this dinner which I had invested faith into should become an enemy of the state. The dish itself may have been poisoned when I tasted the microwaved cheese on top of the chicken topped with a real sad excuse of bacon and mushrooms. After scraping the layer of pus off the top of the chicken, I decided to cut into it... which when hoping for the best, it actually didn't taste half bad. The problem was the aftertaste from the thick layer made of recycled plastic peeled from the meat. You don't have to save the planet on my chicken. When I turned to my friend who ordered the Philly Cheese she was even more displeased then myself. For the bread she had received a large hot dog bun, most likely from the owners barbecue he had from weeks ago. With once again recycled plastic cheese, also there was some cubes of chicken you can tell were from the grocery store down the street. But rather not being chicken... After I had given it a try, all I tasted was the new Meow Mix: Bistro Rotisserie Chicken Flavor. This was again unfortunate. After a heartfelt meal, me and my friend drove as far away as possible to never witness such a delightful experience as this one. Wherever you decide to dine for dinner, maybe even lunch, or maybe homeless and could go for anything, head East away from the Wicked Witch's of the West. read more

Super disappointed with my experience tonight. I've come here frequently over the years since the joint opened and this visit was a let-down. With immediate seating and maybe a third of tables full, we were told that they are using a "limited menu" and couldn't accept burger tips because of their "busy night" so everything would be medium well. (They arrived well done, but I'm skipping ahead in my story.) The server wasn't educated on gluten-free options, not her fault-- management should offer that. My burger-less-the-bun arrived missing a pickle spear and with the frozen veggies still the consistency of a popsicle. The food runner and also our server were visibly frustrated with the kitchen when I politely pointed out the issues. Then, as I'm waiting 5 minutes for my freezer veggies, the manager awkwardly comes over and delivers a disingenuous apology which makes my family uncomfortable. No offers for solutions, just that my veggies were on their way. Side note: my family's dinners were also lackluster with cold fries. The dish of veg arrives-- they added extra this time, yippee-- overcooked as I'm finishing my burger. The bill comes and, much to my surprise, I was charged extra for steamed veggies. It was the only side I could have because they aren't food allergy-friendly. I told the server that I was debating if I should talk to my BFF manager again and she went to bat for me... my entire meal off the bill. (She's my fave, the manager not so much. He was hiding in the back room after speaking to me.) I tipped her the full amount of the bill and paid her compliments for doing the right thing. WTP management, you can do better. I live very close, only about a few blocks away, and I still wouldn't recommend this place to friends or neighbors. The service was not slow but not the fastest, either. Waitress was nice but nothing exceptional. The food was neither really good or bad, it was just mediocre. We got the nachos & the new, raved about Poblano Burger. The nacho cheese had set completely by the time it got to the tables, even though the place wasn't busy on a Friday during the mid-evening, & this made it nearly impossible to eat the chips since they broke under the hard cheese when you tried to remove them. There was a huge messy glob of sour cream on top, no guac, & the salsa had way too much mango in it which made it weirdly sweet. We added buffalo chicken but it was in semi-big cubes which made it hard to balance on a chip to eat. The burger was a little dry, and you couldn't taste the cheese at all! The spice of the poblano pepper was non existent, we put jalapeños from the nachos on it to try & kick it up. The taste wasn't special or even better than your average plain burger. Somehow all of it was tasteless. Only thing I would recommend was the fries, which were seasoned very well & somehow pretty tasty! All in all, the only reason this place got a 3-star is because the view when you eat outside is pretty gorgeous, which sadly is taken away from when a gaggle of people come outside maybe 15 ft. away to smoke which doesn't help peak your appetite... the place over all isn't bad or too expensive, but it isn't a place I think is worth returning too. There are a LOT of better places in town if you want beer or a burger. Try one of those. read more

I only visit Ames twice a year. One of my friends took me here and I loved it. Unique burgers and great service. Extremely fast and friendly. Food was excellent and our servers were on top of everything. We arrived during an evening rush recently and it was handled extremely well. I intend to return here whenever I visit Ames. read more

Solid burgers, staff was very helpful and social. I know there were bad reviews dinging one of the servers, but I have nothing but good things to say about the staff, Kelly who works the bar during the day does an exceptional job. Highly recommend for a decent burger and fries. Try the Skippy burger, I was skeptical when they explained that it has peanut butter on it, but it's quite good. For those who were concerned by the previous reviews, it is also important to point out that I did indeed use the ketchup and there was no catastrophic consequence to opening the bottle. read more

Went to West Towne Pub based on a recommendation for a place to watch sports. They had quite a few tvs however from our table some weren't working or not turned on. The waiter (Bryce per the receipt) brought our drinks, but never refilled our empty cups. Brought appetizer corn bites out (delicious) promptly. Tables around us got their entrees, we sat. Eventually 1/2 of my husbands meal (Egg rolls -crab) and my Chicken Philly arrived. Waiter apologized and said the other 1/2 of my husbands order (wings) were coming. The philly and fries were ridiculously cold. Couldn't find our waiter until the wings came out, he asked if I would like to have them warm up my food, I said "No, it needs to be remade". He brought me out fresh fries right away, and the sandwich later. The food was good but not at all made in a timely manner for my husband and I to eat at the same time. Not once did we get a refill on our drinks (water and ice tea). It wasn't even busy (2pm on a Sunday). I lost my appetite and was really thirsty, boxed up our food, paid (didn't get any discount for pathetic service), and left. read more

WTP I love this bar, it's my kind of place... It is an extremely versatile business that fulfils many needs. During the day its a great place to go with friends or family for lunch; especially if the patio is full. When you're in one of those moods on a day off its awesome for a liquid lunch (good bloody marys). And after the sun goes down the music changes and the fun starts. Drink specials will keep your tab reasonable unless you get sucked into the fun and people and close it down. Karaoke Tuesday always packs the place for a fun (sometimes funny) show. Don't have their schedule together - we showed up for trivia one night to discover they had replaced it with a different event - but the staff didn't know when I called earlier. Our server was rude to my friend as well, and the wings we had were okay at best. The patio is nice in the summertime, but I recommend heading elsewhere if you're bit a college kid. read more
