Don't waste your time or money. I joined in November 2022 to use the pool. Since then the available pool hours have changed at least three times so that I have to constantly adjust my schedule to get some swimming time in. They only have one lifeguard on staff at any given time. This means that swimmers are asked to leave the water for 15 minute "safety breaks" because the YMCA is too cheap to hire two guards like they do at practically every other pool. The lifeguards are unprofessional. At times I have seen the lifeguard reading a book or eating snacks in the tower. Their reservation system to book a swim lane or a class is an absolute nightmare. Despite making clients scan upon arrival, they do not have a system in place to simultaneously check in for a reservation. If you miss 3 reservations, you are banned from using the pool or taking a class for 2 weeks. It's interesting that the YMCA thinks its ethical to receive full payment for the monthly membership fees and at the same time tell members that they cannot use services. The lap swimming lanes are overcrowded, largely because the YMCA has been whittling down the hours available to swim. Ninety percent of the time I call to resolve an issue with the reservation system, no one is available to answer the phone. It goes straight to a recording. You actually have to drive there if you want to speak to a staff member. At $49/month, I really expect better. Its a grossly mismanaged organization, which is sad because I support their mission. read more

The great thing about this location, is that they are slowly making upgrades. But it's still nothing to write home about. It's very small and the weight room gets way too crowded, and on top of that the people stay on the machines while being on their phones instead of getting off and letting other people use the machines. It's annoying, so I now just use the treadmills. They have Clorox wipes scattered around which is nice to be able to wipe down the machines. I really wouldn't go here if I had another closer option, but it's all we got in the neighborhood. read more

I have mixed emotions about this YMCA. I love the staff, always polite and upbeat. For what you pay monthly the facilites are great; weight room, cross training room, pool, cardio, bike and multi-use rooms. As other reviewers have stated, there are many elderly and physically and mentally challenged folk present at all times - and this too is wonderful and in-line with the YMCA philosophy. However i've had a few experiences with persons there (who were obiviously, severly mentally challenged) that I found 'interesting' and a little disturbing. Please, I understand that we need to excercise compassion for the less fortunate but sometimes my patience runs thin. - There is a gentleman who occasionally stands completely naked in the men's locker room and will jump up and down for 10 - 15 minutes straight, facing the lockers and speaking jibberish. - More than one time i have had to tell staff to wake up a gentleman who was completely passed out across the locker room benches. One time he had urinitated himself. - I had another individual walk up to me naked and started slapping his belly, smiling and speaking jibberish. I have a very thick skin and stuff like this really doesn't bother me - personally i'm going to keep coming back. Whenever it did happened I would go to the staff and they would IMMEDIATELY take care of the situation. I have also observed that many of the severly, mentally challenged have 'minders' who guide them through their workout / showering process and in those cases I have never encountered a problem. My point is that I would just be cautious if i had a child 12 years old and up who would be using the same locker room and having to witness activity like that. read more

After going here for the swim classes with my baby I decided to get a membership. Today I went in and there was a homeless man in the family locker room . Apparently they don't tell you but they have s program for homeless to take showers . I wish this information is disclosed with covid and monkeypox. If you're looking for a "community" gym, don't be fooled. My dad was not only a member for over 20 years but volunteered thousands of hours at the West Valley YMCA. He was beloved by many members and staff associates. He suddenly stopped coming because of a fall and passed away over the holidays. When we asked if we could please put up a small poster announcing what happened to him and his eventual passing, we were told "no"; that "New construction and the front desk barely has anywhere to sit." But when I went back just last month ... in West VolleyFsmily YMCA. I got so excited to be a returning member again plus seeing some old faces like the maintenance staff Lily and the rest of those at the receptionist desk ... I love the ambience and it's very homely or comfy. This I regard as my third home for reasons like I feel at ease and at home I felt the care when I accidentally slip on the floor at the women's locker... my friendly suggestion is if there'd be some rubber mats on each shower spot. #SAFETY first because I've noticed in other branch, there are rubber mats. Do not waste your money! Zero stars for this Y location. The morning/daytime front desk staff is surly and love to snap at guests checking in for having difficulty signing in because THEIR computers are down or malfunctioning. The staff at the pool is even worse and they just don't care about anything but their shift ending. Pick a swim lane and get pushed around by other swimmers who think they own the place. The management team here is dismal. -Real bottom feeders. They couldn't care less if you died there and are well-versed in doing nothing about anything ever. I'm currently very annoyed with them. In the past, they have had decent classes for the kids, but since Covid everything shut down. Naturally. Maybe 8 or so months ago they sent and email saying that I had a choice for my membership to start back up, or not, and I contacted them and said No, We are not prepared to go back. Now, fast forward, I see they started charging me the last 3 months. I didn't get any notification email this time. They just took it upon themselves to start charging me. We have not gone back at all and they don't even have any of the programs that we were using back on track. They will not return my money. I think this is quite unfair! While I might have considered going back once we feel more safe about it, I'm thinking now, that this shady behavior is NOT OK. This location is a hangout for the elderly and disabled. The hallway is constantly blocked with people talking. In the cardio area you might be surrounded as people talk to their friends using equipment beside you. Locker room and showers are outdated. Weight room doesn't have much but it's being remodeled so that'll be a big improvement when finished. Porter ranch location is much better... LA Fitness is much better... If you are tying to enroll your kids into the YMCA I suggest you don't. You will just go into anger mode when your child's team is left with no soccer coach. And when you are half way into the season you get a coach and make it to finals and when the brackets are set a coach from the same league goes to the director Shelly Skaro and changes the bracket to make sure he gets his team up by cheating. Parents who want to reach there kids what is playing soccer and learning how to lose the fair way I suggest you don't register your kids at the YMCA. This branch is nice and somewhat new still. The parking lot can be better since it's always busy. (Oh, and don't forget half of it becomes a "christmas tree lot" for the winter season.) Good amount of cardio machines, weight room, olympic size pool, outdoor playground, outdoor kids soccer ground, and of course, classes for all ages. The showers are clean and there are lockers available for use. They also have an accommodating staff. I like that they have all sorts of classes to choose from, even Zumba. Honestly, the Y is best thing that we could have asked for in regards to pricing. I believe it was a good deal and it includes a lot. Other places were charging way too much for the first payment and membership fee. Besides, the Y had a good deal this past July where they weren't charging membership fees on Wednesdays. First we did the 7 day trial and loved it. After becoming members they give us the option of having free sessions for certain categories. We can pretty much use any YMCA in Los Angeles county. That's definitely a plus. Another main reason is that we needed a gym that had a daycare for my 17 month niece, and that my friends is also included. I can't talk about the activities for kids because we have yet to try them but that will be when my niece gets older. For now she's only involved in the sing & sign. The only thing I don't like is that the people in the weight room who use the weights do not return them back to their appropriate spot. When I'm there I don't see any of the employees trying to put the weights back either. I usually spend a good 30 to 50 minutes in there. Overall, it's a friendly environment and a good place for the family. If you have kids and are trying to get back in shape then definitely go check out the Y. read more

I love this YMCA facility and their kids and toddler classes as well as their swim program! I bring my younger daughter 2.4 y.o to their gymnastics class and she absolutely loves it! The teacher is so energetic and entertainment and truly loves the kids! And the cost is close to nothing! $ 6 per session! And it is not different from those gymboree or my gym classes. My friend told me about it and said Stop paying money to private gyms come to YMCA and enjoy and save! I bring my older 6 y.o to their swimming classes and she loves it as well. So far we had coach Alex she absolutely loves him, younger guy and she looks forward to each class. The classes are very small, I could not believe it! And I have been in Water Wings, Lenny Academy and other private swim places paying a lot of money before I discovered this one! So happy! For a great price you get good education and service! I've been apart of this gym since October and I haven't run into any problems. If there is a machine out of order, it's usually fixed by the next day. There are plenty of machines available all the time. My son is obsessed with the daycare here. The girls are super sweet and the arts and crafts projects are so fun for him. He can be a bit of a handful but they're awesome with him! Weight room has so much to offer. Would be nice if there was a steam room or sauna. I haven't used the pool or locker room yet. Also- every single staff member is so sweet. Everyone always has a smile and says hello! This place is lucky to have them. Also you can't beat the family membership! A bunch of CROOKS! It took 10 days for them to process my $30 refund since they over charged me. We have a family membership here. We were told that as long as our oldest (age 19) was in college, she would still qualify to be part of our family plan. Our normal fee per month is $72. I noticed that we were charged $102 for May. I call and I am told that due to a system update, everyone with a child over 18 was charged this extra amount and that they are working on it. I was promised a call back that week. 5 days goes by, and nobody calls. I call again on Friday. I am told that they are trying to identify each account that has had this problem so they can process all the credits at once. WHY do I have to wait until they figure out what is going on when I am telling them I am a victim of this and I would like a refund. They can clearly see that I was charged too much. More than anything, the lack of communication and consideration is what really angered me. Today, 10 days later, I see my refund. Again, no call. No apology. That particular location is run by a bunch of young people who seem like are there for community service or something and could care less. 75% of the time when I have a question, they are all standing around talking and laughing while I wait for someone to actually acknowledge that I am standing there. They see you. They just ignore you until they are done with their conversation. I also witnessed one of the workers get in the face of a member and tell him he wanted to "take it outside" to physically fight the member. Absolutely absurd. Do yourself a favor and go to Porter Ranch. This YMCA location is DIRTY, has HORRIBLE SERVICE, and RUDE associates. What an utter disappointment. It is super ghetto and disgusting. This Y is full of EXTREMELY RUDE members...you know, the type that only care about themselves. Most of the parents of the area have never taught their children manners- and it shows! The parking lot is awful, the spots are too small. The older ladies come there to socialize during class and I guess that when you hit a certain age- you acquire the manners of a 2 year old. The people who have "free, low income memberships" take FULL advantage and are not exactly the most sociable or POLITE people to deal with...Look, all I know is if I was getting a free membership, I'd be a lot more thankful! Th only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is that the water aerobics classes on M-W at 7pm and Sat @ 8:30am are top notch. The gym isn't BAD, but it could really use some more updated machines! On the next membership drive, I'm going to get a sticker and attach it to my shirt that says "I PAY for my membership" so I won't get attacked by the "donation" committee. I understand that they have limited funds, but it's annoying to be bugged everythime you walk in the door. All and all, I tollerate the Y. They fix and move and schedule things a little half ass. If they would just spend a little more from their budget, they might get it right on the first try and not have to pay more to correct whatever mistakes they've made by bening "thrify". read more

This review relates to their kids indoor soccer league. First, I signed my kid up but we missed the first two games of an eight game season because no one contacted us to tell us which team my son was on. I had to contact them. They did process my full payment quickly, however. Next, my son was placed on the worst team in the league. Other coaches poach the good/older kids and there is no balance of teams within the league. Being 0-8 (0-6 for my son) is good fun. Don't worry, son. It's not that you're bad. It's just that all of you are a lot younger than all the kids on all the other teams. Practices were chaos. The coach let the players from his older team run around the field and shoot on the goal even though it was not their time to practice while my son's team had to dodge errant shots and play on a small portion of what remained of one half the field. The coach then honestly wondered why the kids didn't know what to do in front of goal during games... Perhaps if they got to use it in practice...you never know what might've happened. The condition of the field was ridiculous. The carpet was either torn or missing in multiple areas. It's a mystery how more people aren't hurt on this field. Refereeing in games was also a joke. First, you shouldn't text while officiating. Hide your boredom, please. Second, when a child gets hurt blow the whistle and stop the play. It's not the EPL. They don't know how to play act yet. The other families were nice and my son did have fun. Well, until the last game that is and he got to watch his teammates get trophies. Just not him of course. Coaching 101 says you should probably have the same number of trophies as players on your team. He went to bed fighting back tears wondering why he was left out. YMCA, thank you for working together with me to provide this wonderful, esteem building experience for my son. read more

I haven't been to this location in years. I came because I wanted to check out the free weight room. This is something severely lacking at the North Valley location. The Main weight room there is so cramped for space with one tiny mirror, they also have another cardio room with a weight rack and a few machines. The problem is that they have no mirrors anywhere. This is so annoying, and I would think a liability. How can you even see your form to work out correctly with free weights with no mirrors? Ok, enough about North Valley. This location has been remodeled and looks nice. They have a good variety of cardio machines and a nicer free weight room. More machines, larger mirrored wall and even an area for stretching. The locker room is very small, but was clean. I joined the Y because they have great classes. Lets face it, they are geared more towards family and kids, which really gets annoying at times at the North Valley location also. It's like a free for all, kids running and screaming everywhere. I found this location to be a little more mellow. I will be back when I am in the area or feel like driving a little further to get a decent weights work out. read more

Better than I expected. You would think that going to a Y would be equivalent to...well going to the Y. Actually, its better than most military gyms. This one is also convenient since it is near home, and since my "membership" hasn't expired yet...its been free since like forever...hehehhehe Even if you weren't a member, you should definitely take a look into it, still cheaper than the high end fitness centers and they Y helps with the community as well. They also offer swimming lessons, ballet, guitar lessons for $15 per hour, cycling classes, yoga...etc There's an indoor swimming pool, a mini-soccer field for the kids league, spin room, cardio room, ballet/dance room and weights room. Outside, there is a jungle gym for the smaller kids. There is plenty of parking and the staff is very friendly and are willing to help you out and give you directions. The YMCA will always hold a special place in my heart. Throughout my lifetime, I took advantage of numerous YMCA activities. This includes: Teen Fitness, the GYM, Swimming Lessons & the Basketball League. I started playing basketball at the 'WHY' at the age of 9. I played on numerous great teams, had numerous excellent and often crazy coaches and made great friends. I loved the basketball workshops/shootouts at the end of the season and the championship games. I will never forget winning the YMCA basketball championship my first year playing. I through the ball in the air at the last second as I ran towards my teammates screaming in joy! It was amazing! The YMCA Basketball league is a great introduction to basketball, teamwork, sportsmanship and fun. I learned how to swim at the YMCA. Upon entering the pool area a pyroclastic flow of Chlorine floods your nasal cavity. TOO MUCH CHLORINE IN THE POOL! But then again, gotta keep the area clean. The swim instructors are very patient and are great teachers. After Basketball, I joined the GYM. Since I was not allowed an Adult Membership due to my age at the time, I was enrolled in Teen Fitness. The club/organization is intended to teach teens how to use the equipment in the gym, how to live a healthy lifestyle, and holds team-building retreat events. We went to Big Bear one year, slept in the cabins, and Seth, the Team Leader, told us one of the most scariest haunted stories of my life. His stories were so graphic, interesting and realistic, that I still have nightmares till this day. The GYM is not very elaborate, and the workout machines are somewhat outdated. A young man on the staff, during his paid work hours, preached and proselytized to females trying to work out in the weight room. He asked them leading formula questions and pretending to listen to their answers, which he then corrected with formula answers. He was promoting a specific type of Christianity with a certain slant and getting paid while he kept people from working out. Most girls, many of them older than him, were polite to him while he acted like he knew the answers to the Infinite (unlike them). When this Y closes on Sundays, I think the staff are only paid till closing time, so they normally start chasing people out beforehand. (The pool closes substantially before closing time for the rest of the Y, so don't expect to get your swimming done in the last hour.) We recently stopped going there. This Y was pushing for more members while not having the facilities, room, and weights to accommodate them. It got more crowded and we had to wait too long for machines. The cell phone ban in the weight room was not followed: people sat and texted on the weight machines after they were done using the weights. Since the "pirate ship" pool event is launched every weekend for children, I often avoided swimming in the pool. read more

Weight room is small with not a lot of room to work out. The locker room is like a shit hole. It smells so bad and always have naked men walking around even tho they are not suppose too. Lockers are all broken and not safe at all and out dated. The cardio room is about the only thing good there. It's basically a old folks home! Always taking in the hall ways and when you pass they look at you like your a monster and will continue to talk about chair dancing! Please know that I went to Crunch Gym and it's 35$ a month with fresh steamed towels and they have a water filtration machine and a steam room and so much equipment , you'll always have a machine to work on. No old people and the staff really cares what your goals are. Please think about joining this gym. It's a waste of your money . Seems to be a lot of negativity in the reviews. While I can't speak for others' experience, our family has been going to this Y for over a year now. We've used the gym facilities, soccer field, kids area, pool and participated in swim lessons and are in a soccer season now. It's been great for our family. Maybe not pristine and expansive like a more expensive gym but we get a good value for the whole family. Locker rooms could be a little better but I've definitely seen worse. And it's the YMCA, not Equinox. Have not had a bad experience yet. Staff has been friendly and solid in my experience so far. We plan to keep coming. read more
