I've been a customer here for years. This bank is amazing. They know your name when you walk in after you've been there for a while. They've gone above and beyond for me recently having financial problems and my account accidentally got it overdrawn fee that I really just couldn't afford and I've always been in good standings with them and they went out of their way to take away the fees for me as a courtesy as most banks really don't care For that reason and that reason alone and the girls that work there are amazing. I've always had great service at the Westamerica Vallejo branch. But recently, I had a dispute for a charge on my account. Alexis, in the Vallejo branch, went above and beyond to be helpful. Explained the process of disputing in detail. Today, she called me personally that the credit had been made to my account. West America is a small bank. In the bank customer service is good for the most part. My problem is the fraud department. They fraud whatever they feel like, and they do so all the time. They can offer no explanation or set of rules or any list or anything like that to help prevent your purchases from flagging fraud. I have a bunch of bank accounts this one is rediclous, not worth my time using them for my money or purchases at all anymore. If they wanted my buisness to go to a different bank for everything... they accomplished that goal. My name is James Hanson. Edit: Today I received a letter from West America. They say the fraud department is for my protection. I understand this. My problem is with West America ambiguity. No written anything telling us the rules. There is no motivation on West America's part to make It easier for us (THE CUSTOMER). My other banks don't make me call and beg to spend my own money. Do not use this bank they are old fashioned and not with the times. No business should open accounts here. West America calls you to tell you they frauded a bunch of your transactions, then they want you to thank them. I have other bank accounts that does not make it this hard to make a purchase. A texting bot could do a better job of fraud protection. Oh, they currently do a better job of it. Just remember West America, the money in that account is mine, not yours. They help who they want to help. If you don't seem like the type of client to bring them in revenue than you're kind of shit out of luck with them as a bank. If you're going to bring them in some money they might allow you to get away with suspicious types of transactions, but they'll get some type of service fee they can put back into the bank so it's A-ok Their online banking setup is so out of date I've spent money i truly didn't have but was reflected in the available on my mobile app. Use them as a secondary bank not primary. read more

My husband had been banking with them for 30 years or more and so when we got married we continued to use them. Their management and tellers have always been friendly and helpful. And when we come across situations where we require a little more help they have always been willing to extend a hand within their limits. Before I switched to Westamerica, I was a happy customer of an online bank called ING Direct. However, when I found out that ING Direct had been acquired by Capital One - a company I have no desire to do business with - I made the decision to find another bank. I had checking accounts with ING Direct, Chase, and Wells Fargo, and decided to close ALL of them in favor of one checking account elsewhere. I came in on a Monday and was able to sit down with a banker who went through the various accounts that they offered and helped me select the correct one for my current needs. The whole process took about twenty minutes (if that) and I walked out of the branch with temporary checks and an ATM card. I couldn't have asked for a smoother experience. A few days later, a box of checks ($20, probably one of the cheapest check orders I've placed in the recent past) had arrived at my house and I've been happily using the account since then. This is a really conservative, old-fashioned bank. Sure, this means that their online access isn't stellar and they're not caught up with a lot of the other banks in terms of remote deposit capture, etc., but I really couldn't ask for anything more. The customer service really is phenomenal, and I love the fact that I can call a LOCAL telephone number if I ever have any issues or questions/concerns. Now, before I opened up an account here, I read a lot of reviews online. If you're considering doing business with this bank, one thing that I've found is that Yelp seems will have different reviews for each branch, so someone who uses another branch may have posted their review on that branch's page, yet the information may be relevant to you. The only complaint that people seem to have is that the bank charges over-draft fees, and I for one cannot even begin to wrap my mind around how people see it fit to write bad reviews because they couldn't manage their own money. read more

Over 10 years I banked here. I stayed with them through many disappointing times and conituous predatory banking practices- but today they absolutely have lost a customer in me. Why it is that I would need anything other than myself and my identification to deposit a check into my account is beyond me. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, in addition to all of the other minutia that I have to juggle, I would need to keep in my mind the exact date and amounts of my last deposits of checks from one of my employers (Mind you this is a local check, not a questionable check from out of state). I must be some kind of fool to assume that the bank, which I PAY TO KEEP TRACK OF MY TRANSACTIONS, could access this information. I work very hard for my money and my workdays start at 4am, so I don't have energy to play memory games with the inconsiderant bank manager, who had now done this to me THREE TIMES over the course of 3 months and yet cannot recognize me or my account and who had the audacity to tell me that if I had more money in my account it wouldn't be an issue. It is time to find a bank that can respect me and maybe just maybe- TAKE MY MONEY WHEN I AM TRYING TO HAND IT OVER. read more

I inadvertently made a duplicate payment on line with my WestAmerica VISA card and subsequently overdrew my checking account. I wish to acknowledge the very supportive staff that worked with me over the telephone to sort out the return of the duplicate funds as well as the assurance that I would not be charged a service fee for the deficit balance: (Shanda at the 1-877- main number for credit cards; and Don and Katie at the local branch assisted me). In general, on each occasion that I have needed special help, I have never been disappointed by the efficient and courteous customer service provided at my local branch in Benicia in person; and again today by the staff at the Vallejo Branch via telephone.
