11/16/2023 - the tech showed up at my house to install a sump pump. When i inquired, the tech said it would be 1 to 1.5 hours. After a half hour, he was done. What did you do, I asked. He informed me that he had placed a 5-gallon perforated bucket in the crawlspace, placed the sump pump in the bucket and connected the power. He charged the $750 he had quoted. The pump is a Zoeller 1/3 HP which sells for $200 on Amazon, though the tech said it cost him $238. So, he charged me $512 for 1/2 hour, i.e., $1024 per hour. read more

The owner's two sons, Eric and David were awesome to work with. Now that Dad, Ray, is back in the picture they have left the firm and I can see why. Now there is a distinct lack of any communication and a lack of any willingness to want a job what so ever. As I told Ray, it seems like you must be rolling in the dough because you most certainly don't want my client's $8,000.00 job. Stay away. Stay far far away. read more

Don't use for an immediate need as the time from sending a need assistance NOW to project start is too long (3 plus months in some cases) and your place will either be filled with water or your house will fall off the foundation. Really poor communications. Really poor. Job was scheduled to start on a Monday at my father-in-laws in a town 30 minutes away. On the Thursday before they call and tell me there are people waiting at the house to be let in. No one called to tell me they were starting early. Western has their Scheduling Meeting on Tuesday. You'd think someone would have said, hey, did you alert the homeowner. Hell, I was the last to know. So the job gets done. But not. They indicated they would schedule an electrician to finish hooking up the sump pump. Given they had a month before the job was to be worked on, they had load of time to make an arrangement. Now the job has been done for two weeks and they finally get around to calling for an appointment. (they said they had people they worked with and I wouldn't have to find an electrician myself but now they have totally backed off saying they don't do the electrical. Sure Western doesn't but someone you work with does). So now they are just starting to look for an electrician and it is 3 weeks out and kinda say it wasn't their responsibility or something. WTF. The reviewers who point out that these guys have really poor communications are 100% correct. Try getting a timely return call or e-mail. It's not going to happen. I didn't even get the free estimate that they offer through yelp. They just ghosted me. I was looking for a contractor to do some work on my foundation (basement egress window and window well, waterproofing, etc). I saw an offer by WCS (on yelp) for a free estimate, so I took them up on the offer. I scheduled an appointment, and Kyle came out and looked at my project. He spent about an hour speaking with me and taking measurements and some pictures, and seemed interested in the project. I gave him my contact info, and I asked him for his card. He didn't have a card. I realized that I had some CAD drawings of the project that I wanted to send him, but he left without giving me his e-mail address. I tried contacting him later that week through their main office phone, but he was unavailable. I got his e-mail and sent him the drawings. I never heard back. I have tried getting Kyle on the phone and via e-mail multiple times since then, but I've gotten no response. Really unprofessional, and I didn't get an estimate for my project. Good to know up front that they are total flakes. read more

Tyler came to look at my foundation and said he would get an estimate emailed to me the next day.....three days later still nothing. So I called. He said he would get an estimate to me by the end of the day. Still nothing. I wrote an email to the office over the weekend asking if I should get someone else out to get an estimate. Days later I got an estimate from Tyler--but for only part of the work that needed to be done! Just on the basis that I had to beg for an estimate, seals the deal that I would never do business with a company that is so undependable and unreliable. read more

We worked with WCS on a major project. The builders were friendly and helpful and their work was good. But...I ran into some problems working with their front office. First it was kind of pain to schedule, then it took them two weeks to cash the down payment check we wrote and I had to bug them about it. Then, after they told us that the scope of work had changed and we owed less money than originally thought, they never sent us a new invoice. A month after I emailed them about it, someone called me and had apparently developed an attitude about not receiving payment. Fair enough, except how can I pay you if you didn't tell me how much? It turns out they had been attempting to email me at the wrong email address, which is an honest mistake. That said, I don't know how that happened, given that I had multiple chains of email correspondence with the folks at this company for 6 months. So it was pretty unprofessional in my book. Again they did fine work -- but this was a big deal for us, with a lot of money at stake, and I would have appreciated a higher level of customer care. read more

I have used Western Construction Systems for five projects now and they have always been professional, timely, and efficient. I live in an older home with some basement water issues and they came up with a solution that was minimally invasive and affordable. Additionally I have worked with them to put in a drainage system outside that has greatly helped proactively deal with excess rain and they installed an egress window in our remodeled basement. I am so grateful I hired WCS to do the job at our new house. I needed to have a weep hole installed that the Builder overlooked 13 years ago and which the seller of the property lived with (13 years of rainwater off the roof that had nowhere to go). On top of that, there was a ground moisture problem in our neighborhood to begin with, so it was decided to do the trenching in the crawlspace and add a sump pump and new visqueen. WCS got all the parts of the job together, from the trenching crew to the concrete guy, to the electrician. I had already been with the City of Sherwood and had arranged the right of way permit (which I felt would be in my best interest to pursue in any case), and gave my contractor the pages on City rules for contractors. WCS and I worked very well together. They honored their dates, lived up to their contract with me, and did a superior job in every way. The crew was delightful. They got along well and were very considerate of the house, laying plastic to protect my floors, even up walls that might get dust from the rock they had to carry in to the interior crawlspace. I worked closely with Tyler Reitzer, the Project Manager, who stopped by enough to be personally satisfied that the sump pump and drainage worked properly. I told Tyler his people left my property looking better than when they arrived! I am convinced that these people know their subject when it comes to moisture problems and how to fix them, and highly recommend them. read more

We received a quote to have our basement floor and walls sealed and painted. We were impressed with the professional who came out, but because of the cost, we decided to just start with doing the walls first. This required a modification to the contract that was sent to us. We were told "no problem." Two months and many emails and phone calls later, we have still not received the modified contract. We're fed up. Looking for someone else to do the job. read more

We asked for a bid to repair our leaning chimney. We were impressed when David told us the price and that the work was guaranteed for life. He said he would get the bid to us the next day. Two days later we called and left a message to ask about the bid. The next day called and left message with company, was assured by automated message they would call the following day. No response. Called again and reached someone in the office who said the bid had not yet been entered into the computer. This was 4 days after his visit to our house. Then on the following Monday called again and was told there was an email problem and the bid would be faxed to me immediately. 4 hours I called again and was told that they still did not have the estimate. Now today we get the bid and it is 50% higher than the verbal price! Too many red flags with this company! read more

WCS refurbished my basement foundation wall in 2014. Soon after the job was done the material on the wall began swelling and chipping off. WCS has returned 3 times to my home to re-do the work and still 2 years later the basement wall needs additional repair work. Not once have they called me to find out the repair was holding. I left several messages and sent pictures of the current state of the wall and no return call. I would not recommend WCS for any basement wall repairs. read more

I hired Western Construction Systems to fix some cracks in my foundation, put in some window wells on the outside of the basement windows and to install an irrigation system to redirect storm water away from my home. Long story short, WCS did not acquire the proper permits from the city of Portland to do the irrigation work. They redirected the storm water into the street which requires prior approval from the city and a permit to do so. In addition, WCS cut the city sidewalk without a permit in order to place the drains towards the street. They also did not acquire the proper permit from the city of Portland to cut the drain hole in the curb and only replaced a small sliver of the sidewalk when the entire square of concrete affected must be repoured according to city code. When I initially confronted WCS, they denied all of it. I had to go to the city permit office myself to acquire the proper permits retroactively. Even then, to get the city to sign off on the work took time. I am still in the process of trying to figure out how to manage my storm water so that it does not overwhelm and flood my driveway and my neighbor's driveway. I had just bought my home, and the entire process was a nightmare and caused an extreme amount of frustration on my part. I would not recommend hiring WCS to do work on your home. read more
