There are places on my body that I am not able to see, and even if I could see, I am not capable of discerning the health of the skin. This is why I went to a dermatologist. Come to find out that they assume you do not want a full body check and will only check your entire skin surface if you have a complaint. This is foolish. I the past I have had several pre-cancerous lesions and some that were cancerous removed from places I can easily see, but that I did not recognize as harmful or have any negative sensation such as redness, itching or pain. They say they only check parts of you that are exposed to the sun. Does skin cancer only effect those areas? No. This falls within the realm of "failure to diagnose" which can be a big problem for a provider. They should always perform a full body check unless you refuse to do so. While there, I had several spots frozen and two shaved off. Now three weeks later the spots that were frozen have returned. The technician did not freeze the area long enough to kill the skin cells. I have the impression that they are trying, but they have some areas that need improvement. The service was abbreviated and superficial. It feels like this place has shifted from being a dermatology office to a beauty spa. I guess you go to where the money is? read more

I went to Western Dermatology for a shave biopsy of a simple, benign skin mole done by the PA. It was a terrible experience from start to finish. The numbing injection was extremely painful. The MA said it would just be a little pinch, but it wasn't -- and I always tolerate pain pretty well. Less than a week after the biopsy, the site progressively became completely infected and very painful. I went to urgent care on a Sunday where I was told I had cellulitis that could progress to sepsis. They gave me 4 prescriptions. I returned to Western Dermatology on Monday for a follow-up. The PA brought a student in to examine me and took the infection very lightly. Instead of acknowledging how serious it was, she prescribed even more medication on top of all the cost I had already incurred. When I mentioned that I was concerned about all of the new medication coats (as buying it directly from Western Dermatology significantly higher than buying it from a pharmacy) -- she and the student started laughing. They also tried to charge me another $80 co-pay for that follow-up visit, less than 7 days after the procedure. I explained at check-in and again at check-out that this type of unbundling was illegal. The CPT procedure code includes a seven day follow which should not have any additional charge. The front desk, check out desk, and the manager insisted they charge $80 at every visit. I was finally able to help them understand, proper billing codes, and charges. More than three weeks later, the infection still has not resolved. I will never go back. read more

Called for appointment--was told I haven't been there in 3 years so I would have to be a new patient and they are not taking new patients with medicare. Told him I would pay what my primary didn't pay and he said they don't take any cash payments from patients with medicare. No wonder their ratings are so low!!!! read more

Do not go here. Go literally anywhere else. In my first appointment, the doctor talked to me for no more than 5 minutes and scheduled a biopsy without explaining to me why that was the course of action. She seemed to have exactly zero interest in hearing my experience of the condition I was seeking help with, no qualitative intake or discussion whatsoever. In my follow up appointment, I expected the doctor would see me and explain the results of the biopsy. I never saw the doctor, only a nurse who removed the stitches on my biopsy spots while simultaneously training a new hire : / The bill for the biopsy was close to $400. I feel like I was completely ripped off and received absolutely no help with the condition I originally came in for. In fact, all I got out of the entire experience were two new scars from the biopsy and a medical bill that I can't afford to pay. I was going to just cut my losses and not make a public complaint, but then I received this email from their billing office: "We have contacted you regarding your outstanding balance, but have not heard back. Please call us immediately ... to settle your account, set up a payment plan or account for why you have not paid us. If your account is not settled one way or the other by two weeks from today we may send it to a collection agency. We look forward to working out a solution with you and appreciate your prompt attention to this matter." The "we look forward to working out a solution" is so disingenuous. You could use an AI chat bot to come up with better language for this sort of thing, it would undoubtedly generate something more ... human. Unreal. But also very much on point with the rest of my experience at this place: alienating. profiteering. cold. unhelpful. Again, loud on repeat: DO NOT GO HERE. GO LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE NO MATTER THE COST. I PROMISE IT WILL BE A BETTER EXPERIENCE NO MATTER WHAT. read more

I just received a microdermabrasion and found it to be refreshing. I did expect a longer session than 25 min for a $105 dollar treatment. It felt rushed but I did enjoy the experience. My true complaint would be on the customer service or lack of at the front desk. This blonde haired woman was not friendly and when I asked her how her day was she simply answered "good" and went back to asking me questions about a future session. No conversation to be had here. I have experienced this before which is unfortunate. I found it difficult to find prices for some of the treatments so felt it was worth putting how much my microdermabrasion was. I had been a medical/surgical patient at Western Dermatology for some years, but not recently. I called for a medical appointment, and was informed that as I was a "new" patient (not seen in three years, when they acquired new software, and I became "new",) I therefore was not eligible to be seen because Medicare was my primary, and they no longer were accepting Medicare patients! Medicare patients beware. You may no longer be eligible to be seen if you are "new", ie., not seen recently. Never mind if you have excellent secondary insurance, as I had. If you have Medicare, Medicare is your primary. Good luck. read more

Because my last visit was 3 years ago, I was considered a new patient again, which means a longer wait to get in. After giving the rude receptionist the reason for my visit, I was told I could only be seen for one issue. If I could give zero stars with review, I would. I won't be going here again. I had something removed from my arm. Before this I had never had stitches or surgery like that before. I had no idea what aftercare of stitches looked like, as well as what bandages, adhesive to use and what I was supposed to do after I ran out of the two penny size scoops of ointment that they gave me that was supposed to "last until I got my stitches out". I really don't understand why their receptionists, nurses, and doctors are in such a hurry going through booked appointments, the place was empty? While I was in a vulnerable state after getting something removed for the first time, the doctor never sat and talked to me about what my aftercare should've looked like, neither did the nurse. Not to mention that I got something on my arm that was Quarter size and ugly, just to be left with another scar that's huge and ugly. I know it isn't rocket science to find out how to take care of stitches, but please do not give me a print out OSFM instructions about my stitches aftercare. I had also called this place 3 times asking for my doctor or nurse because I had run out of the ointment that they gave me. After the fourth time of me calling, I had to basically beg the receptionist to get on the phone with my doctor or nurse which didn't take a little bit more of 30 minutes even though the last three times she told me that my nurse was busy and couldn't take phone calls right now. After I had gotten on the phone with my nurse, she had said unfortunately, she did call me, but they had the wrong number put down??? How can these people call themselves professionals? I paid $50 in advance. I was given an appointment with an esthetician who told me that I needed a consult with the RN for the eyebrows and I also needed to see the dermatologist for the rough spots. She gave me 2 business cards and didn't really look at my face but it cost me $50! I'll chose a different derm and don't plan to go back to waste more money. read more

Imagine my surprise to discover that only people with "good" insurance are accepted as patients. If you're down on your luck and/or have Medicaid? Too bad. I was referred to Western dermatology by my doctor because I need to have a mole removed from under my right eye. When I called them for an appointment before they even asked my name they wanted to know about my insurance when I told him I was with a senior care plan they told me they didn't except senior care plans and transferred me to their bookkeeper I informed the bookkeeper that I also have insurance through my employer and she still continue to focus on the fact that I was a senior citizen they never asked my name they never asked anything about why I needed to see them only about my insurance and the fact that they were bothered that I was a senior citizen . Both ladies that I spoke with were rude and need extreme training in customer service. I only rated them one star Because there was there was nothing lower. read more

Updated review So stupidly enough after the first worst impression I had; I waited a month and a half for a scheduled appointment with an actual doctor. The day of the appointment, not even at 8 A.M. but within an hour of the appointment I was canceled on! They will hold your money captive in case you cancel within 24 hours and even charge you more for a no show fee. But you can't charge them!!! If it was actually worth it I would report them to the New Mexico medical board. This is by far the crappiest medical practice I have ever heard of. They will treat you like crap; not listen to you; not value your business; not perform an assessment; and not treat you like a customer. But they will be very enthused to give you a full body scan before even introducing them self. Consider this your warning Original review: 2/5 stars Like christy said before.. but this state as a whole has crappy healthcare mostly due to the drugs seekers that flood the system looking for drugs and not enough doctors in general. But back to This place, like common here, this place will poke your face and then charge your insurance $180. They refuse to drain any lump or bump on your face and just tell you to come back in a few weeks.. like I don't need to pay someone to tell me to "wait it out" or come back later. Wtf is the point of doctors if they don't treat! Also FYI to the owner, if I'm coming to see a DOCTOR don't send in a physician assistance and even still charge me full price. This business is strictly about making money. The drive for making money is perfectly fine if you can back it up with good customer service and quality patient care. If you as a patient want customer service and to be cared for, do not come here. Other reviews about the front desk staff are valid. They are mostly unfriendly and unwilling to assist a patient. Long wait times, unanswered questions, and a general unwillingness to help is what you will find. When the doctor recommends you return in 3 weeks and they say there's nothing available for 3 months, we have an internal problem that needs to seriously be addressed. Dr Glass is exceptional with communication and service. One specific colleague, however, needs to work on patient care and customer service. She refuses to see a patient for more than 1 issue, which in my case, was an eczema check and my annual mole check. She refused to see me for both. Wait a minute! I just spent 6 months waiting for an appointment, paid a nonrefundable $60 pre-visit fee in case I no-showed, filled out pages of required paperwork prior to my visit, and waited 30 minutes past my scheduled appointment time. I then see the doctor for less than 2 minutes and she refuses to address the entire reason for my visit. This is unacceptable and as a practicing physician, you should be ashamed of yourself. The community in New Mexico already has limited access to healthcare. You should not make the situation worse. I will not be returning again. read more

I have been coming here for a few years now. I see Carol Purcell for my adult acne. She is wonderful and very professional. I never feel self conscience when I come to see her without my makeup on. She is very thorough and tries new things when something isn't working. I have seen several dermatologists and she is the only one who has helped me. I don't even live in New Mexico anymore and I still come to see her a couple times a year instead of finding a dermatologist in New Orleans. She usually recommends a couple skin products from the spa, and a couple you can buy anywhere, along with my prescriptions. The products from the spa are usually very expensive, but I have yet to be dissatisfied. read more

Writing this review is a little nerve racking for me because it centers around something I'm very self-conscious about: moles. I always always part my hair so that the bangs fall on the right and cover the one on my cheek that I've hated since the about fourth grade. I say this to illustrate how thrilled I am that it is finally gone! Today I went in to see Doctor Glass for a full body check, she was kind and professional and put all my worries to bed with expert identification and thorough explanation of each of my concern spots. When I told her about the one I wanted gone, she explained the pros and cons of the two basic removal methods (shaving or excising) and gave her recommendation that it be shaved in order to minimize scarring. From there, the process was quick and relatively painless. They numbed me up and took it off, and I only freaked out a tiny bit! For me, this is a triumph because I am normally a basket case when faced with a syringe, much less a scalpel! What helped was that the nurse was kind and understanding and talked to me about wedding plans the whole time to keep me distracted, which I appreciate to no end. The front desk staff was efficient and friendly, and the office/waiting rooms were clean and well-decorated. You do have to book pretty far out, I booked this appointment about a month ago. There was a $25 booking fee and quite a bit of paperwork online beforehand. I may update this review with results after I've healed (and after I get the bill) but for now, I'm thrilled! read more

When I showed up for my appointment they said they wouldn't take Medicare, even though it was just secondary, and they canceled my appointment right there on the spot. i went to western derm for a total of 3 visits. my first visit was really good. my 2nd and 3rd meh. i was over charged by western not my insurance twice and instead of giving me an actual refund they credited it back to my account for future "services". they aren't very nice when it comes to the $20.00 cancellation hold/fee or the $50.00 co-pay. staff told me several times about the fee's and didn't seem very intrested in my treatment or human exsistance just the fact that they needed the cash or i could leave. i went to a "specialist" becuase i thought they would offer a variety of soultions and insight. my 2nd visit for re-occuring acne was either go on antiobiotics long term or come in and get a shot once a week. i only had 2 choices and both really sucked. i got off the antibiotics and stopped going to western dermatology becuase if i only wanted two options i would google them and save $50. plus the extra that they over charged me. nice office but not very helpful or low key about needing you to pay upfront. read more

My wife and I were not impressed with the service we received. We understood that the Dermatologist were all booked up for a month or more. So we agreed to see one of their assistants, Marsha. It quite frankly was one of the worst experiences we have every had at a doctors appointment. She barely looked at my wife's problem and then started telling us all the things it could be but never asking us any questions to understand our side. She was very condescending to us when we would suggest certain things. Almost acting like we were just little kids who should listen and not speak. She also was trying to push products from the spa. Just after telling us that sun block could be bad for my wife's problem, she then recommended the spa's sun block. She never really asked or listened to any of our concerns. To be honest the office and entire practice seemed very professional. The front desk employees were very nice. But I could not recommend any one to go there after this experience. read more

I just called to get an appointment with a well-respected Dermatologist at Western Dermatology Consultants in Albuquerque. She was highly recommended. But I was told that none of the providers affiliated with their clinic accepts Medicare, and they refused even to discuss getting me an appointment. I'm sure their physicians are qualified, and the providers may not have a voice in this "no-Medicare" policy. I have never had a clinic refuse Medicare anywhere in New Mexico. Still, they were clear and firm, and would not even discuss if, or how, I could get an appointment. This is a deeply sad situation. I am sure their doctors are skilled and experienced, and Dermatologists who can take new patients are difficult to find. This is a discouraging trend in our community. read more

I came in to see Carol Purcell for my adult acne (which appeared after getting off a 10 year stint of hormonal birth control) and for a millia on my eyelid that I've had for 15 years. Carol was awesome - she made it clear that she understood that my acne is from a hormone imbalance as my body stabilizes now that I'm not taking hormones every day, and she prescribed me medicine that helps adult women with acne instead of stuff for teens with oily skin. They also removed the millia on my eyelid on my first visit! I was sure I'd have to come back for something like that. They were happy to use a local anesthesia when I asked for it so it wouldn't be painful. The woman I spoke with at the front desk was polite and helpful when we were having issues with my out of state insurance, and we got it sorted out quickly. The only reason I'm not giving a 5/5 is because Carol recommended 2 expensive skin products from their own spa, which makes me question whether a pharmaceutical rep is paying them to push certain products and whether these are actually the best fit for my skin. I'd rather be given the full range of options without having to justify my curiosity by saying I'm on a tight budget. read more

The staff could care less about you, why you're there, and your concerns...Horrible customer service from the moment I walked in, I was very rushed, the provider did not listen to me or my concerns at all, I waited 30+ minutes just to have a rushed visit and sent away. The provider will stand 6+ feet away from you and charge you an arm and a leg just to misdiagnose you. She literally said, "I have to move on!" after seeing me for less than 10 minutes. I couldn't put off a visit to a dermatologist any longer, and was pleasantly surprised to find that they could get me in for an appointment relatively quickly (a little less than two months). I could tell they were busy, and did not mind waiting about 30 minutes to be called back, and the nurse apologized for my wait. Dr. Glass was in quickly, did a full exam and addressed all of my concerns, putting my fears at ease. She was able to treat a couple of moles right on the spot. I felt comfortable with her and her knowledge and recommendations were reassuring. I was a little worried about the bill for my visit, but when it came a couple of weeks later it was very reasonable for the services provided. This was my first experience with a chemical skin peel. I was very nervous about going to WD after reading the negative reviews. I found the front office staff welcoming and helpful. My waiting time was reasonable. Kimberly took care of me she went through the options, what to expect during the procedure and after care. When I checked out the lady couldn't have been nicer. I asked to be sent e-mails for open houses on other procedures (Cool Sculpting) and any specials they may offer.
