Staff was polite Dr. Failed to introduce herself even after I introduced myself & proceeded to ask me to do a full body skin cancer exam. She was very clinical, had no bedside manner & left me feeling like a claim to get paid, not a person. I had my first appt. here today and it was worth the wait (about 3 months from date of calling to schedule). For reference, I switched to RGD after going to Epiphany Dermatology (great clinic, scheduling was awful, stopped taking my insurance). Lisa Long was kind, patient, caring, understanding, and informative. The MA was also very understanding and knowledgeable. I had a positive experience from finding the location, parking, to checking in, MA assessment, and my visit. The location is easy to find right off Alameda near Jefferson. My meds were called in immediately and I was in and out super quickly, but not feeling rushed/pushed out. I felt my concerns were heard and addressed, but my time was respected. The front desk staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient. The young lady I worked with was so incredibly kind. They were SO FAST. I was seen before my scheduled visit time, and out in less than 15 minutes, even as a new patient. They just know what they're doing here. Print out the new patient forms from the website and fill them out before you head in, it will make your visit much faster. read more

So...With my insurance, which unfortunately Rio does not take, I was looking at nine months for a skin exam through my PCM referral...plenty of time for bad stuff to grow...so I got on the phone and found someone to help me out...Rio got me in quickly and efficiently, and at a reasonable cash price...Fast forward a year and I find a growth that, in my years of experience as an amateur dermatologist, looked bad...didn't sleep...went over my will...and took some anti-anxiety meds...I called Rio and they got me in THE NEXT DAY....after a five minute exam...Good News.....Awesome team and customer service.... read more

Terrible! After calling around in November for dermatologists who accept new patients, I secured an appointment at Rio Grande for APRIL. I was fine with waiting. I get a call this week confirming my appointment for FEBRUARY. I called back to say no, my appointment was in April. They insisted it was in February. I said I had to cancel then and reschedule. Their first opening was in June! After I asked whether any dermatologists had any openings sooner, I got a cold "okay you have a good day" brush off. Rude! A few months ago I had an appointment at Rio Grande Dermatology with a Dr./Dermatologist who verified that I have Seborrheic Keratosis (basically a benign tumor folks inherit.) At that time she offered to remove it as it would be covered by insurance; but I declined because I was leaving for vacation the next day and she explained it would be raw, requiring time to heal. I thought I'd return to have it done and simply pay for it out of my pocket ($140). Well, today I did just that. I wish I could remember the name of the person I saw. She was tall with blond hair. She was nice enough, but when she looked at the area she immediately stated that she couldn't help me and I'd need a plastic surgeon. I was taken by surprise and explained what the Dr. said during my previous visit. That they could remove it, but there was always a chance it would return. Today, this person said that she didn't feel she could help. After some discussion she agreed to speak to the Dr. and took a picture. The Dr. told her that they during that visit were going to freeze the growth and then scrape off the layer of excess. Today I walked out with a cold growth that was the same as when I walked in!!! She simply picked up the can of liquid nitrogen and sprayed the area. I sat there waiting for her to begin the next step to actually remove the growth! She did NOTHING else. Suggested I return for my next visit and said I can watch just in case pieces begin to fall off! I was astounded! She didn't even take a look at the area afterwards. I asked, "Wait, that's it?" She said, "Yes, you can go." I responded, "That's if for $140? We're not able to at least remove another from another area?" She smiled/laughed and said, "Yes, I'm sorry, but that's all I can do." I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN. I had another appointment scheduled for December, which I'm going to cancel tomorrow. The Dr. said she could remove it. I understood that there was a chance it could go back. It was obvious this person either didn't want to be bothered or had no idea what she was doing. Go to a plastic surgeon....I still can't believe she said that!!! I wish I had walked out instead of forking over $140 for a service I was NOT happy with in ANY regard. Technically, nothing was done. I walked out with a cold spot on my head and no changes. (I don't think I've ever been this disappointed. I was so excited about finally getting it removed!) read more

My first visit here. I was greeted right away and staff were extremely friendly. My MA Megan was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Often Dr visits are so fast that makes you feel like a number, you get 5 min and move on, not with Megan, she made sure I had all my questions answered and showed me what the plans are for future. I had a sore that needed to be treated on the inside of my leg I went there they told me they were going to check to see if I had a bacterial infection and they gave me an antibiotic to take for 7 Days Later it hadn't gone away I called them about it and they said oh no you don't have a bacterial infection so I was taking medication two times a day for a week without anyone calling me to tell me that I didn't need to take it then they told me that they were going to prescribe lotion and sent it to my pharmacist and it was $96 I didn't get it. Do you know what worked ? tea tree oil and I bought it myself I was very upset and I will not go back read more

I've been to a few dermatologist offices in the area and unfortunately, the options are pretty limited. My first visit was to a competing office who basically told me there was nothing they could do to help me - 4 months waiting and a payment down the drain. Then, someone recommended Jill Ortiz at RGD so I made an appointment and waited something like 6 months only to find that when I actually got to my appointment they had assigned me to a different doctor. At my first appt with RGD the doctor was alright, seemed a little rushed but the assistant was great. She made recommendations for sunscreens and skin care, very friendly and personable. After a quick appointment I was sent to two different pharmacies. One pharmacy was tough to get to outside of my work hours and the other pharmacy said they never received a request from RGD. I called RGD and found they had never sent the script. After about a week I finally got the meds, one of which was completely different than we discussed in my appointment and had zero effect. On my second visit I made the earliest appointment available with a PA, I waited a few months, took the time off work and received a call the day of to re-schedule my appointment. They were good about getting me an appointment the next week. When I went in there were 3 girls at the desk, none of who acknowledged me. The waiting room had maybe 2-3 people and it didn't seem busy. Eventually a girl called me over and explained that I'd need to re-fill out all my personal history because they didn't keep it from last time. I didn't wait long until another girl took me to the back. I was pre-screened and saw the PA who was very nice. She didn't ask too many questions, she let me do the talking. I had expected her to tell me a little about the condition of my skin, give me some sort of gauge about what's normal, ask me questions, give some advice on what more I could do but she kept it short. It was also a little awkward to have the assistant in the room with us. At the end of our visit she gave me some meds and instruction and I left. Back in the lobby I checked out with another girl who seemed bothered to assist. At one point I asked her a question and she said "oh, I thought we were done". Again, they sent me to two pharmacies. When I went to my local CVS they hadn't received all the scripts so again, I had to call RGD. One of the meds was a sub to be covered by my insurance and the others had been omitted by mistake. I still haven't been able to pick up my other med from the local pharmacy. My advice, take the first appointment you can, ask a lot of questions and be proactive about your prescriptions. read more

My UNM Westside Clinic PCP didn't seem to care, and the UNMH dermatologists were so busy it was going to be end of June from February to see the Doctor. I knew it was serious. I found an independent NP who biopsied and sent me to RG Dermatology. Got in in 24 hours. I have an aggressive skin cancer, very serious. Rio Grand Dermatology is all over this, and they are helping me. read more

Mixed feelings about this place. They have too many patients and should not accept more for laser cosmetic procedures. They recommend treatment every 4-6 wk but only have appointments available every 3 months!!! This is not acceptable. Once you receive treatment, it is fine and good but good luck actually getting it. I had been through several dermatologists over the period of several years and by chance my new primary care doctor recommended Rio Grande Dermatology to me. I was becoming desperate for someone to help me and I was fortunate enough to go here. All I can say is wow. The attitude of your doctor can make such an amazing difference. I was treated like a human who is having problems and emotions, rather than just another patient/number. I was switched to Dr. Ortiz after my original dermatologist Dr. Lortscher left and I was still treated with the same level of care and dignity. I've been seeing Dr. Jacobs for a couple of years. She is caring and detailed in her examination. All the supporting staff, from the clerical to the technicians are well trained and supportive. So much of the medical community is rather mediocre in Albuquerque, but Rio Grande Dermatology could easily hold its own on the North Shore of Chicago or Scottsdale, both having a very affluent and demanding clientele that does not put up with second-rate medical care. I have no in reservations recommending friends and family in using Dr. Jacobs and Rio Grande Dermatology for their dermatological needs. read more

I would like to share the outstanding customer service I received from one of the newest members of the Rio Grande Dermatology team. This team member is named, Myra and she works in the billing department. I spent several hours on the phone recently, with representatives of my Retirement Health Care Association and PPO, questioning out of pocket expenses associated with recent melanoma biopsy's and laboratory screenings. None of these representatives conveyed any concern or sympathy, whatsoever,for my current health and or financial situation. Myra on the other hand was extremely sympathetic and caring . Myra made several phone calls, checking to see if the out of pocket costs were accurate. I've always felt the medical staff (doctors and PA's) at Rio Grande Dermatology were caring and well attuned to my health care needs. But now, I genuinely feel, even the billing department has my back. Myra really puts the CARE into healthcare, I feel fortunate to have pros like Myra and the entire Rio Grande staff on my side. I scheduled a procedure for mole and skin tag removal, and the receptionist and the doctor were really nice, but they were NOT transparent with me at the beginning. I essentially paid for a full visit for them to tell me that this procedure that I scheduled was NOT covered by my insurance. I am an RN and picky about the care that I receive. I have been going to this practice for many years and just wanted to say that I think the care is great. I have probably seen all of the physicians there, and they all are wonderful. I know it is sometimes hard to get appointments, but the number of dermatologists in the southwest is limited. I needed to have four suspicious spots checked. I had never been here before and checked that they did accept Medicare. It took about two weeks for an appointment. After a few minutes filling out the medical history forms, I was taken to a room. Dr. Jacobs came in immediately. Three spots were harmless, but the fourth needed to be removed via liquid nitrogen. I had a good experience here. They have a very pleasant waiting room and I was called in about 5 minutes before my appointment time. Both the tech (sorry, I don't remember her name) and Dr. Jacobs listened very carefully to me and were very helpful, both in taking care of the immediate problem and in presenting a plan for ongoing treatment. Dr. Jacobs told me that, if I haven't heard from them by January 4th regarding lab results, to give them a call. I'm frankly hoping that I can keep going to them, but since I am changing insurance plans, that may not be possible. Not happy with this dermatologist facility at all. I waited 2.5 months for an appointment and then had to pay a large copay to be seen. Once there I was seen by someone (Kelly) who was rude and unpleasant, and treated me as if I was an inconvenience. She was completely unhelpful, didn't listen to any of my concerns and talked to me in a degrading manner. I wouldn't recommend anyone seek out services from this facility because they certainly don't put their patient's needs first and don't offer friendly suggestions or options for patient concerns. read more

Kelley is the best! I started seeing her when she was at a different practice in town. When I heard she was switching groups here in town I immediately followed. I've seen many dermatologists over the year (I've always struggled with some serious skin issues) and she has finally gotten things under control. She has always made time for me and I've never felt rushed. It usually only takes a few weeks to get in. The support staff and nurses have been great to work with. I was not pleased with the experience I had with Rio Grande dermatology. To start I waiting 5 months for my appointment and when the day finally came I waited for the doctor to come into the room for about 20 minutes. When the doctor finally came in she stayed for a whole 5 minutes, and didn't even look at my skin closely. She wrote me a prescription for Doxycycline for 4 months!!! and then she just sent me on my way! I left with no knowledge of what I was prescribed, why I was supposed to take it so long or what might be causing my acne. To top that off I had to pay $200 for my appointment which I left with no knowledge of what was going on and why I was prescribed this strong antibiotic! The doctor, knowing I was self pay (no insurance), prescribed one of the most expensive antibiotics on the market which I discovered when I went to the pharmacy and paid $250 for my antibiotics and $90 for my face cream (and that is just for the first month!!!) I started to do some research about these products (ON MY OWN) and found several things that made me less then pleased..... The antibiotic not only needs to be taken with food, but you cannot eat dairy when taking the antibiotic because it doesn't allow the antibiotic to work properly. Also it makes your skin ultra sensitive to sunburn. The Clindamycin I was prescribed as a face creme should only be used with a benzyl peroxide based soap and lotion. Which the doctor told me not to change my normal routine! All in all I was not pleased with this dermatologist!!!!!! read more

My dermatologist retired so I made an appointment with Dr. Jacobs through a recommendation from her colleague. i waited several months to get in. When I went for my appointment I was greeted in a friendly manner and taken in on time. The environment of the examining room was harsh. The room was so very cold! I was very uncomfortable waiting in my paper gown and rubbing my arms for warmth. The speaker was blaring out radio ads- no music- ads. So, I don't think anyone was paying attention. Three people attended my examination. I felt a bit overwhelmed by that. My time with the doctor was very short but she seemed to do a pretty thorough once-over. She seemed nice. I didn't need any intervention so I cannot comment on her treatment ability. read more

I wanted to have faith in this derm consultant. I have a history of skin cancer, and am protective of my skin. I have avoided the sun for 25 years, and I have seen a derm for yearly skin scans for about as long. When my former provider stopped taking my insurance I started seeing Ortiz. Over the past 3 to 5 years, I have had two increasingly troublesome spots on my face, raised, discolored, uneven. With every skin check with Ortiz, I have brought them up with her, and reminded her that both were in locales on my face in which I had previously had skin cancers. She just said "Hmm" and did nothing and said I was fine. This went on for years, while these spots continued to increase in size over time. Finally, I felt I had to take matters into my own hands. I returned to her office specifically to have these spots taken care of. A PA did biopsies and they came back indicating squamous cell carcinoma. I actually think it has been more than 5 years that Ortiz has ignored these spots, but since I said 3-5 years, I'll assume that it was an average of 4 years that she ignored them. Two spots. Four years. Eight opportunities to intervene and biopsy even just one of the spots, and make a diagnosis. And she failed to do it. Even with my prior history of skin cancer in the immediate areas where the spots were, which she knew about. Even with my Irish skin in the climate and elevation of New Mexico. I don't know what to make of this. I am a scientist with an advanced degree, and am very aware that science isn't always exact. One trip up may happen. However a failure rate as high as Ortiz' is statistically unacceptable. I don't know if she is tired, burned out, or what. But she clearly needs to leave this profession before her negligence results in someone's permanent disfigurement or death. Her staff has recommended that I see "Dr. Davis" for Mohs surgery. I pressed for more information on "Davis" and then called his office. He (they) does not do consultations as part of their business model. Appears he (they) just runs a Mohs cattle call, to fit in as many paying clients per day to get max revenue. I asked about what they do if the services of a cosmetic surgeon are required during surgery, as this involves two places on my face? They said I'd be on my own to sort that out. So Ortiz fails at diagnosing, and then this "Davis" entity is the best she can come up with to surgically remediate her negligence. If you are concerned about skin cancer, avoid her. read more
