I work with a design build company as an interior designer and started going to Western Cabinets to source cabinets for our kitchen remodeling projects. Hellen at the Sherman Oaks location was wonderful to work with from the beginning. She was very thorough in explaining each brand and their specifics and differences. She always got back to me in a timely manner. She always answered my questions (sometimes there were many). I brought clients to the showroom and cheerful in her demeanor. Hellen was always helpful in providing information the clients needed. If there were cabinet parts missing or any installation issues, Hellen would help me figure out what the solution is and walk me and the installer through it. Kurt was great to deal with. Based on our past purchase from Western States for another project, he provided initial sketches and pricing for what we needed this time. We met with him to refine the design and understand our options. He told us that his pricing would beat the big box stores and even other local shops that use specialty or smaller cabinet manufacturers. The brands that Western States sells are primarily from either the MasterBrands or Elkay cabinet groups. Sure enough, we went to Lowe's and got pricing for Diamond Reflections. Western States beat that pricing by far (including tax and delivery), even with the higher end Omega cabinets. We also got pricing on Showplace cabinets, and Kurt also beat them. But most important, Kurt has been a pleasure to work with. He understood what we were looking for, was on point with the paperwork, and has always been quick to respond to calls and emails. He was upfront if we could get a better deal on built-ins from another vendor. He also triple checked the order to make sure all needed pieces were included and unneeded ones were excluded. Basically, I felt that Kurt was looking out for our interests. Being an engineering consultant, I really appreciate his approach to customer service and salesmanship. My husband and I (who live in Santa Cruz) worked with Scott Newmark of Western States Cabinet Wholesalers through our kitchen designer (Kelly) based out of Thousand Oaks. This was for a remodeled/renovated kitchen in our future retirement home located in Ojai. Renovation was needed after a catastrophic hot water heater leak did extensive damage to the existing kitchen. Scott worked on the plans with Kelly and they were presented to us. I am a very detail-oriented person and had LOTS of questions when it came time to review and sign off on the contract.. Scott was patient and got back to me on everything to my satisfaction. We love, love LOVE the new kitchen! We have tenants in the house right now and are not yet able to enjoy it. It is the nicest kitchen we will ever have. We went through "separation anxiety" because we aren't able to enjoy it every day right now. We do plan to relocate to Ojai in the very near future as that is our retirement home. We couldn't thank Scott enough for all his good work on this project. His drawings and details were extremely helpful to us. We could also proudly show it to friends and family while we got excited about it. He got us a good deal on Columbia cabinets with the nice features (gliding drawers, soft closing mechanisms, pull-outs). I have no idea why I chose this place..Kurt try's to keep it as cheap as possible. They're flyer states they can save you money & to "think outside of the box" instead of going to Lowe's or Home Depot but yet the only way to save is if you choose Diamond cabinets that they also sell at Lowe's..false advertisement if you ask me. He even recommended to get my hardware from their lol I should have went with Lowes because at least they informed me that Diamond had 3 different levels of cabinetry & Kurt never gave me the option of choosing the Diamond Cabinets with more options. He assumes you want to keep it as cheap as possible. Thank goodness I pretty much knew what I wanted in design because he definitely would have designed the cheapest design. read more

WARNING!!!! DO NOT HIRE WESTERN STATES!!! They totally screwed me and my wife in more ways than one. First off, Jeff Herod, the salesman is a complete incompetent. My wife and I spent about $15,000 on top of the line cabinets and a large island. Jeff neglected to tell us that due to the size of the island additional support would be needed accommodate our stone top. We later learned of this oversight from our very competent installer and subsequently payed about $2,000 more for needed support. The second issue was Jeff ordering the wrong sink cabinet-- We told him we had a farm style sink, but he dropped the ball and ordered a regular sink cabinet. He blamed my wife for the misunderstanding and after several debates and contacting his boss Scott, a replacement cabinet was ordered. When we received the replacement cabinet, not only were we charged for the delivery, but we were shock to see that it was the exact cabinet as the one over our fridge, being pawned off as the correct sink cabinet. We later found out that this was the cheaper alternative. To make matters worse there were nails sticking out of the cabinet. I texted Jeff pictures of nails and he said he'd reorder another cabinet immediately-- it never happened. As all of this was going on, my stone guy had been leaving messages for Jeff, who never returned his call. When they finally did talk Jeff promised that he would contact the manufacturer and give them the agreed upon specs of the island cabinets to accommodate the stone, perfectly. Not wanting to delay our move in any longer, now a month behind schedule, because of them--we had our installer build the island using the fridge cabinet, because the correct cabinet would've taken 2 weeks for delivery. The day before the stone was to be installed the stone guy measured our island-- we were all shocked to discover the stone wouldn't fit the island. We realized that Jeff never contacted the manufacturer with the agreed upon specs as promised and unfortunately for me and my wife, the stone was already cut, based on their conversation. When our stone guy called Scott, Jeff's boss, he simply said he's done with us and our problems and hung up. My wife and I were livid, because we had to pay a few more thousand for a new stone to be cut. We've been in our new home for nearly a month, but not a day goes by that my wife doesn't comment on how ugly our sink cabinet is. Don't make the same mistake we made by hiring Western Cabinets. read more

Horrible Horrible Horrible experience. Do not use! My kitchen renovation project has been delayed for more than two months solely due to the negligence of Western States and specifically Jeff (salesman). Jeff failed to place part of our order and did not realize it until our contractor was installing our cabinets. All in, and due to a series of additional mistakes, Jeff delayed our project for more than two months. Further, Scott (owner) would consistently dodge my calls or tell me he would call me back and then never do so. The WORST customer service experience I have even encountered. And this was a $25k purchase (not chump change). These guys do not communicate and consistently screw up. I can not express the level of frustration this company has caused me. Do not use. read more

My experience with Jeff and Western States was great. I was referred to Jeff seven years ago by my real estate agent's husband who is a contractor. He told me that Jeff's pricing was good and that Jeff was really nice and easy to work with. I visited the showroom and Jeff and ! had a few conversations about the different cabinet options, and we worked on the design. I was a first time home buyer and I had no idea what a full kitchen renovation would cost. I figured out pretty quickly that I can not afford to remodel the ugly kitchen. Five years later, I felt I was ready to do the kitchen. Jeff was willing to meet me at his office on a Saturday even though they were closed on weekends. We went over the cabinet options and layout, and we were ready to proceed. Then the electrical contractor took one look at my kitchen and told me that the previous remodel was probably done without a permit and all the electrical work will have to be brought up to code and it will be at least $10k just for the electrical work. This for a kitchen that is only 13'x11.5'. So I had to call Jeff and told him the whole thing is off. And Jeff was very nice about it. I felt bad because he got nothing for all his efforts, but Jeff said it happens, and not to worry, just call him when I am ready. A year later, I am back in Jeff's office. We sat down and worked on the design and layout, again. He listened to me and what I wanted and he helped me with the best possible configuation of cabinets to get me exactly what I wanted. I tried working with another cabinet guy that my brother wanted me to use, and that guy would not listen to me. He told me what he thought should work for me and created a layout that he thinks I should have. I had a similar experience at Home Depot. I am a graphic designer and I know exactly what I wanted, I just needed a cabinet expert to help me get there. And Jeff was the perfect person to help me with it. He has been in the business more than 10 years, and he knows all the options and sizes of cabinets to put together to get me the maximum use of my space. He also made several design recommendations that really improved the whole look and feel of the space. After we did the initial layout, I had him come over and actually measure my kitchen because I wanted to do my due diligence to avoid any problems and surprises. That fee that was charged for his visit was applied/credited to my account when I placed my order. We went over every single detail. And when he was physically looking at my kitchen, he actually made some recommendations and changes that worked better because the kitchen has so many odd window and door openings. There were a few tricky areas such as, the clearance around the window above the sink, a dryer vent that needs to go through a cabinet to the outside, and the installation and fit of an open shelf above the sink area. Jeff contacted one of the contractors he knew to check for any possible problems with the installation in these areas. He asked me if I had a contractor selected. I was trying to save some money by acting as the contractor myself and project manage the varies subcontractors. I had done a bit of that when we remodel 3 bathrooms and 1 large kitchen for my mom, so I have resources for electricians, plumbers, tile people, countertop people,... etc. But I was a bit nervous, and was fearful of going over my budget because my house was build in 1928 and I wasn't sure what I will find once they open up the walls and floors. I think Jeff sensed that I would get into trouble without a contractor since we were gutting the whole kitchen. He recommended a contractor that he said was honest, fair and very good. And he was right, the contractor he suggested was amazing. His pricing was fair, he was an excellent and efficient time manager, showed up early and on time every day, did a beautiful and flawless job and finished ahead of schedule!!! We did run into a few issues with the cabinet doors, but that was not Jeff's or Western States' fault. Some of the doors had minor imperfections which is a quality control issue on the cabinet manufacturer's end. But all I had to do was contact Jeff and he contacted the manufacturer and made arrangements for the replacement doors. The kitchen turned out beautiful and Jeff played an important part in that success. His recommendations were spot on, the contractor he suggested was fantastic. Kitchen remodels are expensive and stressful, and I wanted a perfect outcome. By working very closely with Jeff every step of the way, utilizing his experience and expert advice, and by him listening to me and making crucial recommendations, a perfect outcome was exactly what I got. A great kitchen, expertly executed and within budget. The cabinet configuration looks beautiful and even more important, it functions exactly the way I needed without going into the cost of custom cabinetry, and Western States' pricing was about $2K+ less than Home Depot and Lowe's. read more
