We used Western Veterinary Hospital for about 3-4 years for vet services for our dogs. Beyond loving our pets just as we do--which is plainly evident by Dr. Fussell and his staff--they have always been thoughtful, considerate, and fair in presenting treatment options and routine care procedures. Never once did I feel like there was ever any motive but the well-being of our pets. We recently moved to Edmond, but continued with WVH for an additional 6 months because of how connected we felt to the staff and how satisfied we were with the quality of care. I can never say enough wonderful things about this vet. Sure, it's small and a little out-of-date in the decor department but the people are kind, they know what they're doing and they know college students have a limited budget when it comes to everything, even their pets. I payed less than $100 for my male cat to be neutered and I about kissed the receptionist when I found out my kitten's shots were $20 something! The place was negligent in caring for my dog, and the worst thing is they covered it up. In short, they gave him anesthesia I warned them he was sensitive to, he had a seizure, and they never told me. I only found out when my new vet requested his file and read about the incident. I have a rare breed of dog, which granted, vets are not familiar with. I told the vet that my dog's breed was notoriously sensitive to anesthesia. The vet said that he had never heard of this in the breed, so he didn't think it was an issue. I spoke with another vet about it, she said that when my dog was put under for teeth cleaning that they would do it slowly so that there would be just enough to get him under but not enough to reach dangerous levels. My dog spent the day getting his teeth cleaned. When I was finally called to pick him up, he was way more woozy than he should have been. He was stumbling, couldn't focus, and just really out of it. I asked if I should stay home with him the following day and they said I could go to work. For the rest of the night, at this point over 12 hours since the initial anesthesia, he was completely out of it and lacked balance. I come home from work the next day and there was diarrhea everywhere. I called the vet to ask if I needed to bring him in. I was told that no, dogs do this sort of thing sometimes. My dog gets better, and he is fine. I continue taking him to the vet for the remainder of my time in Oklahoma since he liked the vets, they were great about squeezing me in for emergencies, and I thought they were doing a good job. I finally found out what really happened when I moved out of state and in my intake appointment my new vet asked about past surgeries. I told him that he seemed to have a stomach issue due to one kind of anesthesia used by Western Vet, so he said that I could request the file from them so he would know what to avoid. I call Western and ask for my file, after looking me up they will not send it to me, and instead say that my vet has to be the one to request it. My vet requested the file and read that during my dog's dental cleaning, the anesthesia had caused him to have a seizure. They never told me! I understand not wanting to alarm someone, but I want to know if my dog has a seizure so that I can watch him extra closely for the following days and know what to look for. This is not something extraordinary. I suppose they had a note that I had told them I was concerned about anesthesia, so this is why they covered it up. But seriously, this was entirely unprofessional and put my dog in danger. What if I had an emergency and had to take him to another vet that didn't know that he had seizures on certain drugs? Thank goodness I finally have a competent vet who let me know what had really happened. read more

I think I probably visited most of the other veterinary clinics in Stillwater before a friend recommended Western Vet to me. I had been particularly disappointed in the tendency of other offices to recommend teeth cleaning and then price it out of reach of the average Joe. Dr. Fussell has been an excellent diagnostician, very caring with my pups, and is an excellent surgeon. He is pragmatic and reasonably priced. (Yes, among many other things, I do have him clean my dogs' teeth.) He has had to do several surgeries on my dogs--all very successful and reasonably priced. More importantly, there isn't anyone whose advice I would trust more. read more

They have been taking care of my pets now for 8 years. I have been very picky about my pet doctors. I have even been to one in Texas that tried to take advantage of a situation. All of the crew at western love animals. Dr Fussell and Dr Mitchell are both great. Most recently, Dr Mitchell listened when I noticed some head trembling in my boy. I called again when two weeks later he did it again. She stayed late and did testing. She was able to diagnose him and treat him immediately for erhlichia. I appreciate her listening and not blowing me off as an obsessed pet parent. He got diagnosed early so he should be in good shape. Remember to call your vet with any unusual behavior now matter how small it is. I recommend Western if you live in Stillwater. read more

I began bringing my dog here the week we got her when she was 10 weeks old. We had a good experience with Dr. Mitchell. The issue came with my dogs spay appointment on September 13th, 2017. My husband dropped off our puppy at 7:30 am as we were instructed. 1:30 pm rolls around and neither of us had heard anything. I called them and was put on hold for 4 minutes and then told that they had not gotten to my dog yet. I was immediately upset because this means my baby had now been without food or water all day!! The tech told me they would get to her within the hour and call me back. The hour rolls around and they call me to tell me they just can't get to her today. I was told I could either leave her there overnight or come get her. I was obviously upset but not rude as I was in my classroom with 20 kindergarteners. I told the tech that I was upset mainly because my dog had been without food or water and was in a crate all day. She put me on hold and on comes the surgeon. Dr. Fussel. Dr. Fussel was immediately rude to me. He told me that I had no right to be upset and that I had to understand that this was a "hospital" and that if emergencies come in, my dog gets pushed back. I told him that I completely understood but that as a business, a protocol should be in place so that even with emergencies, appointments do not get pushed aside. He is now yelling at me, no exaggeration, telling me that I was incoherent and that I obviously did not understand how hospitals worked. He then tells me I could leave my dog there, but that he could NOT guarantee she be seen the following day either. I then told him he was being rude to me for no reason and he said "yes, I am because you don't understand" and then he HUNG UP ON ME. I was so appalled and have never been spoken to like that before. My sister in law was able to pick up my dog 5 minutes later and we have since found another vet and will NEVER go back to Western again. My dog was neglected and mistreated under the care of Western Veterniary Hospital and the rude, mean, Dr. Fussel. read more

I will never stop taking my animals here as long as I am in Stillwater. The people are so sweet and care sooo much. I have a nervous dog and the vets take the extra time to make him comfortable each visit. They are also reasonably priced and their puppy package is hard to beat! read more

My boyfriend and I have two boxers. We went out of town for almost two weeks and left them at Western Vet at their boarding services during our trip. I cannot say enough how wonderful the people are! They are very kind, and treat the animals great! It also did not cost an outrageous amount of money to leave them there that long. They will be our vets forever. read more

TERRIBLE BUSINESS! I am a college student who adopted an abandoned puppy 4 months ago and it was time to get her fixed. I budgeted over 10 paychecks at my part time job to afford it. I called 5 places to stay within my budge for which I found Western Vet Hospital to be the lowest price by $30. During the day of the appointment, they never called to explain there would be an increase in the charge (had they, I would have picked up my dog prior to the surgery as I did not have any other money). When I went to pick up the dog, they told me it would be $430 because the dog was energetic and because she weighed 42 lbs instead of 40 lbs. Further telling me that it was only an estimate and SO SORRY about their mistake. When I said I didn't have the additional funds they told me "if you couldn't afford a pet, you shouldn't have adopted her in the first place." The office is closed during COVID and I couldn't go into the office to speak to anybody outside of the person in the parking lot. She then came out and said they would take $336 and that's it, and she couldn't get the dog for me until the additional payment was made. We've since called the office 3 times in 2 days to discuss, with each time being asked to call back to talk to somebody who actually gives a darn about what happened. First, only the DR could make the determination and would call back and now only Taylor can make the determination for whom I spoke with yesterday. Terrible, do not trust them. read more

DO NOT take your animals here! I brought my cat in twice when concerned about two different issues. I was paying for prescriptions that never helped my cat. I got a recommendation from a OSU vet professor to get a second opinion. The other vet discovered that it was a much greater fatal disease that was causing the illnesses. They also discovered he had fleas, which Western Vet did not catch! A vet that can not catch fleas?! Anyways, my cat was misdiagnosed TWICE and I am now having to put him down. I am switching where I take my animals for veterinary care from Western Vet for ethical reasons. My dog has been on a behavior medication for years and will need to be on this medication for the rest of his life. Western Vet quoted me 90 cents a pill last time I brought him in for a check up. I was able to find the same pill on petmeds.com for 32 cents a pill. This adds up to a considerable savings because my dog takes two pills per day. When I asked to fill my prescription through petmeds.com instead, Western Vet refused to fill the prescription unless I paid a "service fee" (essentially pay them to allow me to fill the prescription through another pharmacy). This fee is separate from the exam fee. I was upset by this, but paid the fee. They charged $14 for 6 months of refills. Last time I went to fill, they wanted the fee paid again, even though I was within the 6 month period of my last paying the fee. They now tell me that I will have to pay the service fee EVERY TIME I want to fill the prescription. I understand that the clinic is a business, but I have paid the exam fee and I don't believe they should be paid for a product I purchase from another company. The vets here are very sweet, but I think the service fee is unethical. I've also found some of the staff (not the vets, but some of the lobby staff) to be unhelpful. read more
