I don't remember the last time I had such a good retail experience. The staff were right there whenever I needed them, and had the operation running through their headsets smoothly and efficiently. I ordered some tools they needed to grab from stock, and they called it in, and quickly had someone take my tools to the cashier, and even waited by the cashier for me to get through the line to explain the sale that was running and make sure I got the right discount. Tried to use rewards dollars and received pushback from cashier who hadn't even read the physical coupon I received which did not state any exclusions. Did not accept 1/2 of them despite the coupon not stating that it couldn't be used with any other offer. I called the Milwaukie location which is nearby and they allowed me to use my rewards dollars without issue. Rewards dollars are different than discount coupons. Cashiers need to know this, or read the terms and conditions before off-putting the customer. Weird experience. read more

Amazing resource! Super friendly and efficient cashiers (she knows my loyalty number by heart); extremely knowledgeable staff who has saved me from calling a professional many times. Several times I've come in with a picture of my problem (usually plumbing but sometimes electrical) and staff has brought me the parts I need to fix it explaining exactly what I should do. Without peer, the best place in town if you need a hardware item. Despite its tiny footprint, they have a ton of staff at all times ready to assist you and I have always been able to get what I needed. They traffic less in the decorative home goods that have taken up a lot of the real estate at other locations (ex. Oak Plaza Milwaukie), and have stayed true to their roots. I used to believe that all Ace Hardware were the same, but after several disappointing experiences elsewhere (NE Portland, Oak Plaza Milwaukie), I've learned that the Westmoreland location is extraordinary for its service. read more

Ace Hardware really knows how to deliver exceptional customer service and the Westmoreland location exemplifies this. Whenever I have a project that requires instruction I head here. The staff, each one of them, is helpful, provides instruction, potential solutions, and helps me find everything I need to complete the task. I never feel like I am bothering anyone or taking too much of their time. They give me 100% of their attention for as long as I need it. Wow. Wish every store was like this! Not only are they well stocked in all of the basics - plumbing, electrical, hardware, paint, electrical, screen replacement, garden rakes, shovels, nuts & bolts, tools - they have a great seasonal department. In the spring and summer there are grills, outdoor furniture, pillows, garden tools, seed packets, annuals and perennials. Their yard art and garden items are whimsical and fun. At Christmas they have indoor and outdoor lights and all the extension cords and remote controls to light up your space! Plus some artificial trees, ornaments and other decorations. And always flags, any time if the year. I'm always super impressed with the houseware department. I never expect a hardware store to have such a vast collection of high quality and good looking kitchen gadgets plus beautiful serving pieces, placemats, napkins, candles, cutting boards and other items to create a really nice presentation. I usually don't review chains, but I do make some exceptions, and this is one of them. This is my local Ace store and I've coming here for over 3 years. Being a first time homeowner and having an older property. There is always something to fix and work one. I've been here over and over again with a million questions and the staff here is always super helpful, full of ideas, and friendly. They don't even laugh at some of my very rookie questions, at least not in front of me. They just help me as they do all customers. They have a huge selection of almost everything you need and can give you ideas on how to accomplish certain fixes with what they do have. The ACE Rewards program is great for those discounts and store credit. Plus those dog treats at check our for my Doodler are a pleasant bonus. read more

I've been going to this Ace Hardware store for over a decade, and they never disappoint. This morning's outing was typical. I had a plumbing problem, and on a second trip just brought in the innards of the offending outside faucet. Washer was an oddball, but as usual the red-haired gentleman (whose name escapes me, but the locals will know him) sorted through the washers, found the one that fits, and even installed it on the piece for me. I'm pretty handy, but this guy is amazing: he doesn't just sell you something, he's interested in getting the problem solved. Everyone in the store has been great, and there's nothing they don't have. The best business in Portland, hands down. read more

It was a very warm afternoon when I walked into Westmoreland Ace Hardware on Milwaukie Boulevard. I noted that there were Stars and Stripes flags still being sold, and it was well after Independence Day in July. I was going to look at some of the Washers, but I had to go and catch my TriMet Bus down the street. We might be back for some Paint later. This Westmoreland Ace Hardware is very, very close to one of my favorite Boba Tea shops. The older White Man who was standing at the entrance of this Ace was instructed to help customers as they walked in on this afternoon. I decided to purchase a rake during a future shopping trip... at a different Ace. There is also a Manual Edger that I wanted to purchase... but, that will be later. Don't go to Westmoreland Ace assuming that they will honor the Call2Recycle dropoff conditions of "free battery dropoff" (https://www.call2recycle.org/faqs/). Went to recycle a Ryobi 18V tool battery that was dead and was told that I'd have to buy a new one from Westmoreland Ace as they only did Call2Recycle as a "core charge." This is contrary to the Call2Recycle program and was for me - wasted time. read more

I want to love this store, but I absolutely cannot stand getting asked if I need help finding something every 30 seconds. If I just wanted exactly what I needed without looking for it, I'd order it from Amazon. I go to a big box store for $.50 in screws, and I leave with $100 of other things I realized I needed. What an amazing neighborhood resource! Impressive selection given it is a small store. You can probably find everything you need in 5-10 minutes instead of wasting hours getting lost in Home Depot or Lowe's. Employees are friendly and helpful, and they come to you, you don't have to hunt them down! On average, you pay little bit more than the bigger stores but prices are completely reasonable, and you save gas by shopping close-in. Obviously if you have a large project, or need building materials or lumber, this is not the right place to go. But it you need a few quick items, this store is perfect. read more

This is a chain/franchise hardware store that is still run like your friendly neighborhood hardware store. They are always helpful and have an amazing amount of stuff packed into their store. Today one of their staff showed me how to repair the hardware for my shower with a washer that cost $0.34, rather than replacing the whole stem assembly ($10+). This is a fantastic little neighborhood hardware store. It's small but I don't find the selection to be overly limited. I have yet to pop in for something and been told they don't have it. The seasonal merch is pretty awesome. Kiddie pools and pink flamingos in the summertime, plenty of fans for the inevitable rush following the first hot week in spring. In winter, there's shovels and sidewalk salt and a plethora of holiday decorations. They're doing it right here in terms of stocking appropriately. Even better than the selection is the service. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful without being overbearing. Mighty Fine Bonus: the shop is dog friendly which means I can stop in while walking the dog without having to tie him to a pole out front. The counter staff have Milkbones on hand and always treat the dog when I'm checking out. That's some stellar service. read more

This is the best hardware store I have ever been to. As you walk in, there is always someone there to greet you. You get personalized service and they appear more interested in helping you get what you need done and less about trying to sell you "something.". They seem to always have what you need. What I love is that they also help you compare quality with price and really leave it up to you as to what you feel would be your best purchase. The best part of the story is just how friendly they are and kind. After a hard day at work, the last thing you want is to spend time in a hardware store trying to figure out what you need to get the job done. You also don't want to hunt store employees people down. Ohhh, Westmoreland True Value. You were so close to 5 stars. I love little hardware stores. They remind me of my youth, going to the hardware store with my dad to buy nails, fence posts, gardening supplies, or just whatever. I like this little location, the old school merchandising, the guys in the aisles waiting to answer my questions. Every time I come here, someone immediately greets me and asks me if I need help finding something. I appreciate that, even if the store is tiny. I understand that cool little shops like this are being run out of town by Home Depot, Lowe's, and Walmart, and that's a bummer. I don't even mind if guys are watching me walk around the store, because I'm not stealing anything, so it doesn't bother me. As a long time retail store manager, I can tell you with 100% certainty that the people who take the biggest issue with being watched are the ones who steal. Otherwise, most people appreciate being checked on every now and then, because who knows hardware better than the dude who works in the hardware store? I don't want to have to go looking for him. Anyway, this place almost always has what I need. And yes, I may need help with light bulbs or plumbing fittings, so feel free to check in from time to time. What I don't particularly like is when you freak out as I am cutting my own piece of cord in the I back of the store, with the tools and the workstation you provide. I KNOW how to cut rope, as I explained to your staff as they had a meltdown when I measured and cut my own cordage; I've managed a marine hardware store for a dozen years; we specialize in cutting rope. At the other end of the service chain are the POS (point of sale) girls, who are always super friendly and helpful, and they make me forget about the silly rope cutting key making guy in the back of the store. Anyway, for the most part, I'm stoked this store is in the neighborhood. Just chill out a little bit, guys. No one is going to run away with the store's rope, or hurt themselves with the scissors. Edited to say: I really don't appreciate being followed around a store (by weird accusing stares and by *literally* being followed as SOON as I walk in) as if I'm attempting to shoplift, and this is exactly what happened this weekend, down to the thug "security guy" in the aisle staring at my sweater sleeves as if I was stuffing things up them. WHAT THE HELL, GUYS?! Way to make good customers feel really, really crappy & unwelcome. What a disappointment. We'll be taking our biz elsewhere from now on, thanks. ---- This is my go-to place for birdseed and Christmas lights/decor, etc. in the hood. They also have great deals on garden stuff and a good selection. Admittedly I've yet to check out the rest of the store but I'm guessing it's also pretty damn fabulous. The people here are really friendly, down-to-earth, and I *just* found out you can check out their current sales/deals online and reserve things this location might not have on hand to be *ordered* in for you! They carry any hardware/problem solving item you'll need, plus, a lot of cool gadgets, toys, quirky holiday ornaments and fixtures. I used them twice yesterday and they were able to help me immediately. Can we help you find something? as soon as I enter "YES!" I feel like I am in Anytown, USA. The clerk was jovial and the staff seemed happy. Prices seemed legit for a nice hardware store in the middle of Sellwood. I found Plumber's Tape and a ratchet. Excellent neighborhood hardware store. Selection is basic and middle of the line in terms of quality. It's impressive considering how little space there is in the place. The staff are always helpful, sometimes a little on the know-it-all side (which I appreciate being a bit of a know-it-all myself). I did find that there's a better selection and longer hours across the river at the Lake Oswego Ace - so I end up going there more often now. Still, love my little neighborhood Ace. read more
