Our HVAC contractor recommended pairing the new setup with fresh insulation and a radiant barrier to get the most out of our AC, so we got several quotes. 911 Attic Insulation came in mid-range on price, but they were the only company to include crawl space rodent proofing as part of the package, which pushed them to the top of the list. Daniel, the owner, was easy to reach and responsive throughout. When we talked numbers, he worked with us to fit our budget, which we really appreciated. The crew came out and handled everything in a single day. I'll be honest: our attic was a genuinely rough starting point. After the work was done, we noticed a recessed light had come loose. I reached out to Daniel and, without any hassle, he had someone out the very next day to fix it. On a weekend. That kind of follow-through says a lot. A few of the places I checked with didn't want to give a rough estimate, but none of the them lied about their reasoning, so they didn't get reviews. Some even gave me a rough estimate right here on yelp. Based on some of the other reviews, it seems like this sort of pressured sales approach is their business model, instead of helpful answers and good work.

While they did work with me, did exceed expectations in rodent proofing patch support, and were quite friendly and ready to correct most shortcomings I pointed out, I would have preferred they not rely on my oversight to give quality work consistent with my original direction. They did not tape off a sealed plastic tunnel from the front door to the attic, did not let me know sealing off light fixtures was excluded, left some spotty gaps between batts of insulation and between batts and joists and did not run a second layer of insulation where I had requested it perpendicular to the first layer to better air seal joist gaps. They were unclear about IC-rated lights in contact with fiberglass batting insulation and its fire risk and did not seem to know the code on attic ventilation requirements enough to answer questions fans or vent sufficiency. Granted, I did not have insulation removal as part of the scope, it was already done by a prior contractor during rodent proofing. Instead of making a tunnel, they taped off a small space from the attic hatch to the floor and put construction paper down on the floor. This helped with scuffs to the floor and may have contained some of the fiberglass dust/particles, but did not protect from scuffs on the wall or contain the fiberglass during transit to the door that was shed from the new batts being carried in or from their clothes and shoes, even though they generally had only one person trafficking the batts up to the hatch. They bagged up debris in the attic and carried batts in bags in from the door. They removed all the paper and plastic before I was done with my inspection, an inspection that yielded more work required, then they didn't put protection back for the short time of rework. The foot traffic left some fiberglass flakes and particles strewn about the floor. It took me two hours of cleanup to get that debris fully clean so my baby could crawl on the floor again. I vacuumed with a shop vac, made three passes with a swifter dry duster, and vacuumed with a house vac. I suggest asking them during the bid stage about the following, getting a quote for that work (with optional line items if you don't need everything), and confirming it is written in the proposal/bid/work order scope before awarding the project: - a sealed tunnel for transport of removal and installation - cleanup with vacuums and swiffer after until no particles remain in house on floors or touch surfaces - air-sealing fixtures and other gaps from rooms below - code and safety insulation contact with fixtures and blocking with gaps (2"-3"?) to avoid contact - insulation contact with rafters/roof battens/sheathing - roof ventilation adequacy and fan install if needed - gap prevention - running a second layer of batts perpendicular to the base layer for better air sealing - minor or major rodent proofing gap sealing with mesh and foam This is a good list to consider for any contractor you use, some contractors may find this obvious or already include it, but you could still benefit from knowing what to check for and avoiding change orders. I ultimately was satisfied by the work and they made some corrections and concessions to balance the expectations vs delivered result, but would have been happier with more clarity of scope options (too late to seal the fixtures now unless I pay $600 more or do it myself) and I had to do lots of cleanup that I could have avoided if I simply rejected their suggested home debits containment method of bagging with no tunnel. Although I would not suggest this crew if you are not prepared to check their work, which not everyone is physically capable of doing in tight spaces of some attics.

I will be filling out a complaint to the BBB and putting reviews out about how you promised to keep my garage clean and pick up all roofing materials and didn't. Edit this issue has been resolved work crew came back today to clean up the garage and the dreck that was left. The response to my review was prompt. The work that was done seems very good I never had an issue with that just the garage clean up and the promise that if AT&T charged to move the satellite dish they would cover it. I sent three emails without a response and was frustrated that is what prompted the negative review. I would still recommend this company.

Things went very smoothly. We would have given them 5 stars. However, a few major issues just came to light that completely changed our perspective. The Financial Scare: We paid Attic Masters in full, but a short time later, we were shocked to receive a California Preliminary Notice from the subcontractor they used for the asbestos removal. When we called the asbestos company in a panic, they told us they hadn't received payment yet. It took several stressful phone calls to sort out what was going on. While it ultimately turned out to be just a timing issue with Attic Masters payment schedule, receiving a legal notice against our property was incredibly unnerving. The Code Violations (Found 9 Months Later): The biggest disappointment came nearly a year later when we had an HVAC company come out for a separate quote. They pointed out multiple major issues with Attic Masters' work that were not done to code: No Permits Pulled: We didn't realize permits were required for this type of work. Attic Masters never mentioned it or advised us to pull them, so no permits were ever filed with the city. Wrong Duct Size: They installed R6 air ducts instead of the R8 air ducts legally required by CA and our city's building codes. Skipped Testing & Sealing: Because no permits were pulled, they skipped the mandatory HERS testing. They also completely failed to seal the vents. While we wish we had done more independent research on permitting, we trusted Attic Masters as the professionals to guide us and install materials that meet local laws as we were first time buyers and did not have any knowledge in this area. Finding out months later that our attic isn't up to code is incredibly frustrating. If you use them, be sure to manage the permits yourself, double-check their materials against local codes.
