We stayed in OV-10 for 3 nights with our 2 big dogs... We enjoyed our stay but for $300 a night we expect more. This place needs a serious deep cleaning, including the windows. It desperately needs recliners or a cozy reclining loveseat and a decent size tv; the living room seating is not comfortable for R&R. 3 out of the 6 windows couldn't be opened for fresh air, either because they didn't have screens or they wouldn't stay open. Also, less is more when it comes to decorating... there's SO many decorations/knick knacks everywhere that you're worried about knocking stuff over. And for the love of God, put decent toilet paper & paper towels in the cabins! Also, if you have dogs be prepared to take them down the hill to a grassy spot by the office for potty breaks since there's almost no grass in most places on the hillside. We were impressed that the maintenance guy stopped by to see if we needed anything/hot tub needed service? The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed for preparing our meals and Stephanie's Restaurant was awesome for breakfast! And there were plenty of towels & extra rugs for our 3 night stay, which can be an issue when you rent a place with a hot tub. We were on the tail end of our Oregon coast road trip and were driving back down south from Portland. We had no plans or reservations, but I knew I wasn't driving all the way home in one shot. My wife worked her magic as I drove and booked us a cabin at the Whaleshead Beach Resort going solely off of the Hotels.com reviews, which were good. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised when we arrived. I was tired and hungry so we quickly checked in, found our clean and LARGE cabin, unloaded our stuff and walked down to the restaurant, which is on site. We ordered some drinks and meals, which were better than decent and very large portions. We took quite a bit of food back to the room. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and the view from the dining room of Whaleshead Beach was nice. After dinner we went back to enjoy the hot tub on our deck, and it was GLORIOUS! Those jets soothed my feet and back so well, I knew I was going to fall asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. After the tub, we watched an old VHS movie they provided and then hit the sack. All in all, I loved this place. Our cabin was clean, way larger than we needed, and the hot tub on the large back deck with a view was icing on the cake. The bed was really comfortable, and my kids loved sleeping in the upstairs loft. If you're looking for a perfectly located coastal hotel with all of the amenities and fair prices, try the Whaleshead Beach Resort. I'll stay there again for sure! read more

I booked a cabin and paid top dollar specifically because it had a hot tub. When I arrived, the hot tub was broken and they did not offer me a discount. I know that hot tubs can break, but if one of your main features is not available, I should be offered a discount. Also, the maintenance guy drives around on a 4-wheeler with no muffler and it is extremely loud. Why can't their maintenance guy get a muffler? PLEASE PUT A MUFFLER ON THAT ATV. read more

First off, I would definitely recommend getting here before it gets too dark and you can't find your cabin. The resort is a little tight and hilly, so it will be a challenge for you after hours. We arrived when the office was closed after 8pm with further instructions. Even with the map, it was a little challenging. Nevertheless, can't blame anyone but ourselves for arriving so late. Once we got in our cabin at U-21, we were definitely pleased to see a nice and cozy cabin with a hot tub out back in which I took full advantage of. Unfortunately, we only had a quick night stay here, but I thought it was great for what it was. When I woke up in the morning, the view of the ocean struck me by surprise. True story: My buddy and I had been working all day in Brookings getting a house ready to move- so we were tired. Had dinner in the restaurant which was fine. We went out to the lobby and my boss thought hey we're tired. Let's check on the cabins. I live in Ashland and he's in Grant's Pass. It was late, getting dark and made sense. Guy at the desk was sitting with a younger woman. They were both totally absorbed in something on the computer. We later figured it must have been Facebook or a game. Transfixed. The manager would not look up while my buddy asked questions regarding pricing. Guy with a pompous attitude just said they varied. Well, obviously. My friend had fond memories of staying at Whaleshead five or six years ago- so he was persistent. My friend never got an answer on pricing and was basically ignored even though he is a well-dressed businessman and well-spoken and probably could afford the most expensive place. At any rate, we went to the Best Western in nearby Harbor. The manager there was hospitable, courteous, smart and professional. Everything that these two weren't. I told my friend to call the owner the next day. He said it wasn't worth it. The place has become a rundown dump compared to what it was and he wouldn't recommend it to any of his business friends anyway. Said it wasn't worth his time to make a call. I guess the management doesn't care about losing 200.00 plus for the nite. Skip this place. Rude, disrespectful customer service and a hillbilly attitude. They need to hire a better class of people. read more

Spent $500 for 2 nights, our cabin C6 was filthy, I'm talking my sons feet were black from walking barefoot on the floors and it smelled like animal pee. "Hot-Tub"" was 83 degrees, I went to the front desk, they sent someone up who pressed buttons on the back deck for about 10 min and said it was fixed, the "Hot-tub" never got over 87 even though he set it to 102 NO WiFi in this cabin and pretty much no cell coverage from Verizon. I would not recommend spending the money to stay here. They offered some money back which was $50, they should have just kept the $50 and purchased cleaning supplies. read more

I would recommend Whaleshead if you could directly deal with the cabin owners. Since this is not the case, I can only recommend it when you stay at least a few days, otherwise the cost is just not worth it- late checkin and early checkout, expected to do a little cleaning. However this wasn't my qualm- though our chosen cabin was beautiful with an ocean view, we had some safety issues (not just one) and when I addressed them directly with management after our stay, rather than on a public review, their response (after checking in with them again myself after a week of no communication) left me feeling like I was completely wrong with my comments, which weren't really even complaints. How I was treated was very unprofessionally, I never received a name in the signature of the emails, I then got a couple of one-sentence responses that were extremely inhospitable. Being in the industry I would respect a guest to contact me directly to give feedback in order to help our business grow for other guests in the future. In this, I would also use respect and value the guest's feedback, whether I agreed with it or not, but certainly this management wasn't trained in how to retain guests and have them want to return. I purely won't come back because I can't support this sort of business and it's a shame. Don't blame a guest or tell them they're wrong. I hope no one else has such an experience! Pros: Our cabin was better looking and more updated than the pictures showed. The view was amazing Cons: -everything else -Hot tub was not hot (was blamed for that even though we covered it and there's a sign stating to do so- duh) -No safety items for their "frequent" power outages (flashlights, candles, no lit driveway that's extremely windy to go down and unsafe in the dark) -oven was broken and filled the living space with propane smell, we couldn't use it. I would give it a -5 if that were a choice available. I took many pictures I plan to post in a future review. I am renting C-15. When I got here I was exhausted as I work an overnight sift and the drive was 3 hrs. The first thing I noticed was the bedding was not clean (I went to fred meyers and bought my own) they claim there is extra bedding here, there is not, and there was an odor. I began to clean. The closet I was to put my suite cases in had an old tv in it and was filthy. Everything from the kitchen drawers to the cabinets to the bedroom cabinets etc was filthy. A window is cracked, the grill is barely working the heat is broke at the far end so they have a space heater. An extremely dirty rusty pizza pan was in the over, a rusty dirty single burner was with it. Moldy candy was in the cupboard. the tv had a leg taped on it with a wad of tape and a piece of molding to level it. (I fixed this for them), I found an old empty bottle from wine in the filter to the hot tub, the hot tub was not clean and the filter had some growth on it. Id love to post the pics here so you can really see what it looked like. I totally cleaned the place so the next person will be happy. I have called VACASA (the property management) many times, asking for a clean blanket and the hot tub cleaned at the least i was told someone would contact me withing an hr. No one called or came here, later it was said they claimed they called me but could not get ahold of me. I have no missed calls on my phone and no messages. the cleaning lady supposidly said the unit is older and the debre is stained. It is cleaned now, and came off for me. I believe the cleaning and land managers and maintainance workers are extremely lazt. It is quite sad how bad this place is. I have been asking for a refund for three days. We happened across this place and had a nice stay. Each cabin is really like a fancy mobile home that is individually owned. The owners allow the front office to rent them out and each has it's own rules and restrictions. Other Yelpers have mentioned that the staff doesn't know much about individual units, so we must have been lucky because the one we got was very nice. We stayed in B-11 because it was pet friendly and had a hot tub. It was very nicely furnished and had a beautiful location overlooking a roaring creek. It had a full kitchen so we purchased groceries in town. It also had a bedroom with a decent queen sized bed and a bathroom with a nice sized walk in shower. There is also a small upstairs loft with two small beds, perfect for smaller kids. It took a little playing with switches, but we eventually figured out lights, etc. We never did figure out how to get the artificial fireplace going. It was a cold night that we were there and the heat worked well in everyplace except the very front room. We looked and never found a vent there, so it must be something like a three seasons room. It probably doesn't get that cold there very often, so it probably not an issue most of the time. The resort has a restaurant that was recently remodeled, but we did not eat there. We also wanted to try the tunnel to the beach, but it was pouring rain the morning we left. It was a nice place to stay and I'd probably stay here again if we could get the same cabin or another nice one. My only real gripe is that it wasn't exactly cheap, but there isn't a whole lot like it in the area. read more

We booked Unit U11 last minute. Staff was welcoming and friendly. The resort is beautiful and I would stay here again for sure - just not in this unit. The location is lovely - greenery all around with a view of the bay from one end of the deck. Hot tub was clean and working well. The kitchen was stocked with all we needed. This unit is in need of some attention. Cobwebs and dead bugs were abundant on the exterior, furniture is old, bedding was clean but worn, flooring is separating and lifting, deck furniture rusting, window seals broken with condesation obscuring views. Overall, it felt as if no one has attended to maintenance for quite some time. The home has a TON of potential given some scrubbing and updating. read more

BUT there was a very intense smell of dog, I believe, or just animals in general and it was very unpleasant. I have stayed here twice. Once in September 2012 & again recently July 2015. People need to take into consideration these are individually owned units. The first one was nice and that's why we booked again. This last trip we stayed in T10 and it was very nice and clean. The decor was modern and beach theme which looked great. There was a beautiful view of the ocean and it still seemed to be nestled in the woods. It had a hot tub and a nice deck. Whalesehead Beach is beautiful and the sunset is breathtaking! I'll be honest at first we were very excited to have found this place, the cabin was clean and the grounds weren't too bad, some areas were a bit run down. We had even started to plan our next trip! After checking out however, we were charged $162 for a pet cleaning fee, for a pet that we did not have. (The normal fee listed on the site is $25 a night. We stayed 3 nights, how did they come up with the $162?) It was a cabin that was not pet friendly, so we left the pups at home. When calling and emailing to talk to the manager of the property she was extremely rude and not happy about us disputing the charge. She was however willing to refund $75 of $162, we of course said no...the whole thing needed to be refunded as we didn't have our pets! She was further upset at having to reverse the charge. This took days to figure out, it was a huge waste of time and energy. That is not what you expect when you book anywhere. So very disappointed. We won't be going back! Brookings however is fabulous!! We rented cabin A24 over Labor Day Weekend. It was GROSS! It was listed as "dog friendly." It stunk like dog pee so bad we had to keep the windows open. The carpet was covered in dried pee and poop stains. The windows were so dirty we could barely see out of them. The bed felt like metal springs poking us and it sagged in the center. The pillows were old and flat. The couches sank about 4 inches when you sat in them and they stunk like pee also. The shower had black mold around the bottom. We checked in after hours, so the next morning we went to the office and told them how gross it was. Staff not helpful, didn't have another cabin, or offer a discount or refund. We searched for other accommodations online, but no luck during the holiday. We were stuck with this filthy, disgusting cabin. Don't stay here! read more

My second visit. Well appointed with comfortable bed, flat screen TVs and WiFi. Great views. Hot tub is relaxing. Enjoying the local nature quail, ringneck doves, chipmunks, hummingbirds, chested Bluejays, even pelicans over the ocean. Just the right distance from town. I have never had such a horrible time at the coast ever. When we arrived we were told that they were just finishing up fixing the hot tub when I had literally called 2 days prior asking and making sure it was working because the weather wasn't permitting us doing much so we wanted to make sure it was wiring because we were going to spend most of our time at the cabin. They told us yes it's all ready to go for our visit. Also the amount of chlorine that they added was just ridiculous. Also the entrance to our specific cabin was a slip hazard at its finest. I slipped and literally almost broke my ankle. The topping of the night was the power outage that happened some time around 11pm. I do understand that it's not their fault for the power but to not have proper equipment or tools in these cabins during a power outage is completely inexcusable and unacceptable. No flash lights, candles, first aide kits. Not even extra blankets to keep warm. We literally went to bed cozy and warm and woke up to it freezing. So we packed our stuff went to the office to get a refund because I had just had enough only to be told they can't give refunds till Monday when a manager in. Then to get told at 730pm tonight that I would not get that refund until wed. I'm sorry I have worked at resorts with cabins just like this and there is ALWAYS a manager on site for specifictrains such as this. Plus not only to be treated very rudely. What do they have to be rude about?? Absolutely nothing. I'm the one that had the bad experience not them. They better hope I don't have a fracture from falling because I will be sending the bill there way!! read more

Make sure to thoroughly research which cabin it is you are wanting to stay in before investing any money here. It would seem that depending on what cabin you rent determines to a great extent the quality of your stay. Unfortunately, the cabin we stayed in last night (C-16) hasn't been maintained very well at all. We had NO hot water except for the water in the hot tub. The awesome maintenance guy came out to our cabin twice in the less than 24 hours we stayed there to deliver propane for our bbq because it was completely out and to try and get our hot water to work. If the owner of this cabin were to put in just a little bit of time and care, I could've easily given this place a 4 maybe even 5. The deck has several soft spots which make you feel unsafe and even an area caution taped off. Not great. The carpet and furniture were very worn and the carpet was torn and stained. There were absolutely no rags or paper towels, leaving us to have to use the nice bathroom towels for everything. We will not stay here again. Not this cabin and not whaleshead period. read more

I'm giving this place a 4-star review because the price was very low compared to other hotels in the area, and the cabin we stayed in was brand new and in mint condition. I would NOT reserve a room here over the phone or internet without FIRST seeing the room I'm staying in. I looked at several of the cabins before agreeing to stay here. One of the cabins was in terrible condition and smelled like a rotting dead animal. The other cabin was in good condition, no bad smell, but had no view. If the 3rd cabin hadn't been so amazing, I probably would not have stayed here at all. When I notified the management office about the dead animal smell in the other cabin, they didn't seem the least bit concerned about it and acted like they already knew but weren't going to do anything. These cabins are actually individually owned, like time shares, and there's an on-site property management company that rents them out. I think they have little control over the condition of the units, which is why they're so different and some are in such bad condition. I would definitely stay here again, but would not give my credit card until first seeing the room. read more

These are not cabins but rather little manufactured homes painted to look like redwood cabins. The entire resort is a time share with each "cabin" owned by individuals. The people at the front office have no idea about the condition of each place (or so they say) so I like the suggestion made by other Yelpers to look at several before deciding. We were lucky enough to get cabin B-11 which was dog friendly with a hot tub and a beautiful location over a roaring creek. It was an absolutely freezing cold night when we checked-in and the cabin heat was turned off. We kicked it up to 70F then went out to dinner. It was nice and warm by the time we returned. There was one bed downstairs and two little kiddie sized bed up in the loft area. It was nice to have a full kitchen to make breakfast. We picked up supplies at Fred Meyer in Brookings. There is a 700' tunnel from the resort to a secluded part of the beach across the street but we didn't get a chance to check it out due to the torrential rain. read more

Sad! This place has gone down hill. Grounds keeping needed badly. The RV park has become a permanent destination for broken down old RV's. $40.00 a night is a rip off. Some of the cabins are looking shabby. I heard there was new management. I think they need another change. Cabin prices have skyrocketed!! Last month I rented a dog friendly cabin and my adult daughter rented another cabin for herself and her 2yr old twins. We stopped by her cabin to help her unload her things. During that time we put our dog on a lead on the back porch for 20min. She never barked.We could see her the entire time through the big living room window. When we left we made sure she didn't go to the bathroom out there and took our water bowl. The manager stays in the adjacent cabin and fined my daughter $50 for the dog being outside! When we ecplained that she stayed with us in our cabin that i paid a pet fee for they said, "Too Bad!" My family has been staying at Whaleshead a couple of times a year for the last 12 years but due to their unprofessional management and unfair policies they will no longer have our business. read more

We liked it so much we bought it. Were across the road from one of the most photographed beaches in the state. A $400 a nite price tag in California for that option. Whaleshead Restaurant has been all good with the dining experiences we've had there so far. The whole facility is going thru an update as per the new owners. Employees have been good people with us on and off the clock. So far so good. I'm a Yelper if it changes for the worst you'll hear about it. Until then it's all good. In the short amount of time we had our unit in the rental pool it was the renters that seemed to abuse the privilege. Missing Artwork , rearranged furniture , broken blinds scratched walls. We love the Whaleshead, you can choose from many different cabins to stay in. The cabins are totally self contained, if you have food and drinks you'll never need to leave. A BBQ on the deck as well as a hot tub makes these cabins super romantic and private. The cabins are just across Hwy 101 from the ocean with great views on a clear day. The office has a store and restaurant in case you left anything at home. My husband and I stay here several times a year. Its our favorite hidaway! read more

I stayed with my camping trailer in the RV park. Not a lot of privacy, but most RV parks don't have much privacy. AND backing into many of the spaces is not for amateurs, which I most definitely am. The RV park does not have Wi Fi, which was a bummer for me, but I got a lot of reading done and went for many lovely walks on the beach which is right across the highway. There is a tunnel under the highway from the RV park, which is very convenient, but does require a flashlight and the trail is a bit steep at the beginning. I ate breakfast twice at the restaurant. It was really, REALLY good. The first morning I had their special, Cinnamon Roll French Toast, which was yummy. The second morning I had a small bacon and swiss omelet with their house sourdough pancakes. The omelet was stuffed full with bacon and cheese...really great. The sourdough pancakes were huge and superb. I will be back to try their lunch and dinner menus which look very good. Burgers, sandwiches, fish/chips, and more exciting things as well. There is wi-fi in the restaurant. The folks at the desk and in the restaurant are very friendly and nice. The view from the restaurant is gorgeous no matter what the weather is. read more

We stayed in U12. The good: Fantastic ocean views from inside and at the patio table. Hot tub on the deck was working well and very relaxing. You do not have a view of the ocean and neighbors are right next door so not that private. The unit is up on the hill a ways in a quiet location. It is nicely decorated and has an open feel to it with multiple windows and light colors. Parking is right next to the entry door. Could have been better: Carpet upstairs in the loft area and stairs leading up seemed to have not been vacuumed. Chips, empty Oreo snack pack bag, Capri sun straw wrappers found. We vacuumed but it is not really the first thing you want to do when arriving. I know places do not wash comforters between guests but the loft comforter had many visible strands of long blonde hair. Took it off and used the spare comforter which seemed fine. The master bedroom downstairs seemed clean. The water faucet in the bathroom did not turn off completely and was hard to adjust it to even a drip instead of running water stream. Mentioned to the front desk but if they have more guests coming in right away it may not a priority. You can try to get it just right but it is this how you want to spend your time? Patio had 3 chairs and one of them broke while getting out of it due to rusted part on the base of the swivel. The top broke off the bottom as it was being used. There was already one chair missing. All should be replaced to avoid this happening to another guest. Dangerous to say the least. One of the inside chairs had a piece of string holding the middle rod of the back together, and resting your back on it is questionable in terms of stability. The patio deck is faded and is in need of staining. The hedge is not cut down at the far edges blocking some of the view. Overall we had a nice stay despite the above issues. read more

Ok, I called for a RV site with a ocean view. The guy I spoke to told me all of those sites were booked for the dates I wanted. So I took a forest view site. After driving 4.5 hours to get to the park I asked If they had any cancellations for an ocean view site. The guy behind the counter laughed at me and said we don't have any RV Ocean view sites at all. So I was lied to on the phone to begin with. He gave me a little map to show me where the site was. Well they may have three or four total RV sites among sites that people live full-time. The place is very ungroomed filthy with full-time people and junk everywhere. I would never recommend this RV Park to anybody. On a great note we went to the restaurant called Stephanie's which is right on site. The wait staff along with the food was fantastic. I would drive 4 1/2 hours to eat alone at the restaurant but I would never ever recommend staying in a trashy dump that show on their brochures with nice green grass and beautiful decks overlooking Ocean view. They also told me it was a short walk through the tunnel to the beach. My wife and I put on water socks and a flashlight to walk through the tunnel under Highway 101. When we got to the end if you wanted to attempt to get to the beach you would have to swim through 4 1/2 to 5 foot of water just to get to the sand. With expensive phones and regular clothing on we had to turn around and walk back through that shitty tunnel. Never go to the RV park ever again. However the restaurant is fantastic read more

Let me start by saying, I have been a HUGE FAN of this place for years now....until my last stay. Very dissatisfied with my latest experience, so much so that I will not come back. 1. Horrible customer relations/service. Not that expected a 5 start treatment, but didn't even get close to reasonable. I called the front desk after I couldn't get the hot tub to heat up past 98. They sent up Vic, a good ol' boy with a shitty attitude. He used accused us of tampering with the system, yelled at us (no, really) and basically frightened my wife, who immediately didn't feel safe. I called to complain, spoke to the manager and said we wanted to shorten our stay. She told me no. Told her Vic was out of line and kinda scary, she said theres two sides to every story. Boo, whaleshead. 2. Dirty, cobwebs, decrepit furniture, very dated. Its like an double wide with a nice view. 3. Overpriced. $150 a night can buy us a private coastal home on airBNB. Do some research and you'll see what I mean. Here's a tip whaleshead, at least pretend to care about your customers. Your place isn't nice enough not to. Whatever charm you had is out the window. My family and i came down from spokane washington for a family members wedding so we rented a cabin at whaleshead resort. We were so excited about the view, private beach access and the cabin. When we arrived it was the worst cabin I've ever stayed in. The place was so dirty!!! The ceiling fans were covered in dirt, dirty dishes in the dishwasher, we had to sweep the floor before we let our toddler play on it. The steps up to the loft were broken in spots, cobwebs all over the place and dirt on bottom of shower. We paid 200 a night for dirt pretty much. This place used to be a nice place to stay when coming to the coast, NOT ANYMORE!!! The cabins are falling apart, half the time the hot tubs do not work, and to top it off the management could care less!!!! So sad to see a nice place go to shambles :(. read more

Well, what can I say about this horrible experience and lack of customer service on behalf of one of the staff members there. I was just informed that the reservation I made a month ago for my anniversary was not available for X or Y reason when my check in was for tomorrow. This was known for a couple days and I didn't get notice until today that it won't be available. Instead of doing the right thing and getting me another available cabin for no extra charge due to "their" issues, not mine, that I can reserve another one that is more costly and I need to reserve it for more days than I am staying. Needless to say, now I am in a bind at the last minute and am pretty much screwed on my reservation according to their staff. read more
