Took our Jr Girl Scout Troop to What's Cooking in Oyster Bay today to finish our Simple Meals Badge! They made a three course meal - meatballs, fresh pasta, and donuts! Owner and chef Nadya was awesome. The girls loved her! She was funny and really works well with the kids. The other 2 ladies that helped us, Stephanie and Madison were awesome too! We have been here a few times now and the events and staff are usually amazing. Not so much this time around. We had an amazing time at two of the winter break events. My daughter attended a party this weekend and it was slightly awkward and uncomfortable. There was some changes with the set up of the facility , specifically the party area set up. The changes to the seating arrangement, while giving some (or at least the appearance of) some more floor space, it separated and disconnected the children. Some of us from a parents point of view did not love it. Because of the first come first pick style of seating, the kids did not feel they were "together" with their friends that were at other tables. And while usually organized and fun, the party seemed a little more like a stricter classroom environment. Another important detail that some of us got upset with at a party my son attended over the weekend was the children were requesting drinks and were blatantly told no. This is unacceptable to some of us, especially myself as when my son gets overheated or to thirsty he can start to get headache or nauseous and in extreme circumstances ((not this situation) can actually pass out. He had his own water bottle so we were ok, but to deny the children beverages more specifically water is unacceptable to us. With all that said we do love What's cooking and are local regulars and will continue attend, we were just a little disappointed, We hope this review is taken to heart. This place is an amazing space for children to learn how to cook while using their imagination and exercising their independence. The proprietor and her team are wonderful with meeting the needs of the kids no matter the skill level. My daughter loves their classes and had a great birthday experience! Nadya and her team hosted our nursery class holiday event and it was marvelous - they were wonderful with the little ones, geared the event towards young children, kept things moving and we all left with a delicious box of decorated cookies. I feel badly about writing a negative review, but I do so in the hopes that other parents will be spared the expense and sadness that we experienced last weekend. I had an extensive discussion with owner, Lynne, about what I envisioned for my daughter's 11th birthday party and we agreed to "cupcake wars" (which costs an additional $100 for essentially nothing but regular decorations for the cupcakes). The party was not at all up to what you'd expect and it cost nearly $1000 for 90 minutes of complete chaos. My grievances are MANY, but here are the "lowlights": The party before us ran over, causing parents to be dropping off while others were leaving - this was total chaos and the timing threw everything off. Parents of my daughter's guests arrived too early for pick which cut my party short. There were walking out the door while we sang "Happy bday" . Total disaster! If you schedule parties too close together this is bound to happen. This was so unprofessional. There was not enough food for these young ladies by a long shot! The pizza slices were TINY and they ran out of pizza! I was told there simply was no more...despite the fact that the place is located across from a pizzeria. Lynne, the owner swore there was enough for two slices for each child. I call a serious BS on this one. None of the adults (family only stayed behind) who were there were offered a piece, including me, and I was paying for the party. Oh, and I was serving all the girls refills on drinks as the staff was off doing something else. There were three on duty, but they could have used a fourth for sure! I was promised a "cupcake wars" party just like on TV. Let me just say.. NOT SO MUCH. Lynne promised we could choose a theme, the judges, etc. My daughter was extremely disappointed that she was unable to choose the the theme for the decorations (she had given it so much thought) nor did she choose the judges to deliberate about the cupcakes. Instead, the staff just threw out holiday colored cupcake decorations, and did not take anything about our prior conversation into account. By the way the colors were for Christmas and we are Jewish. Yes, there was some blue and white, but it was a birthday party, not a holiday celebration. My daughter was beside herself! Nothing that I was promised or charged for took place. It was a total disappointment! There is no music during the party and no ambiance, just total noise and chaos. The place is a birthday party factory clearly doing too many parties, too close together, and just moving through the motions. Neither my family nor my daughter felt important, festive, or special. They were erasing her name on the blackboard before we even walked out the door because they were getting ready for the next party. None of our discussions or feelings were considered despite the fact we complained during the party and we were all clearly upset. Children's coats were taken upon arrival and thrown in a big pile near the kitchen. #licerisk, #unsanitary. One of the girls was panicking because she couldn't find her coat. Invest in some hooks! There is nowhere for parents to sit comfortably. There were no beverages offered to parents, grandparents, etc. It's just not a gracious place. Make a pot of coffee for goodness sake. Finally, there were no discounts or modifications made to the price of the party although my deposit was paid on a cc and the remainder was paid in cash! Lynne took nothing off, not the service fee, nothing! Oh and I brought my own cake and candles. How in the world is that good customer service, or good karma???? Although I wholeheartedly support the small business community, I cannot in good conscience recommend this facility. I am heartbroken about the money I spent, but so much more heartbroken that my daughter is so upset about her 11th party. read more

Came here for a 6th birthday party as a guest. I was really impressed at the service and activities for the children. They run a tight ship, and the kids are thoroughly entertained for the entire 2 hrs. The party included making mini personal pizzas, make-your-own cupcakes, including decorating them. The kids even jumped on bubble wrap while a machine blew bubbles above their happy heads! The kids get to eat their own pizzas, then take home six cupcakes. I would highly recommend it to anyone attending or looking to throw a unique party. My daughter who is nearly 4 was able to keep up with the cooking direction. Had a cooking class with some friends last night. The class was taught by Nadya who was not only patient and friendly, but she took the time to teach us about the food itself and to teach us how eating and cooking healthy doesn't have to sacrifice taste or be expensive. I had my Daughter's Birthday Party here yesterday. We chose the Cupcake Wars Party. The children had a great time! My Daughter even said it was her "best Birthday Party in years"! The staff was very very nice, and excellent with the children....If I had to choose one area that I think could be improved, was the Meal that was served. We chose the Chicken Tenders and Fries. Chicken was VERY tasty, but the kids only got 2 chicken tenders each. Not a lot for 9 year olds. The Fries, unfortunately, were terrible. I think for the kind of money they charge for a party (starts at $495, I paid over $700), the food should be excellent. The cupcakes were of course, outstanding, lol. My children have been attending classes at this fun cooking school for years. Yesterday, my daughter had a Birthday Party there and it was awesome! Victoria and the her assistant supervised the entire event from A to Z and I got to enjoy myself too! No stress or pressure for the parents. Children had fun and created delicious food in a friendly and warm atmosphere. Lynne, the owner, is amazing and makes the children happy and inspires them to love cooking. I reserved two spots for my grandchildren in the holiday class at a cost of 65 each about a month before the class. Very unfortunately the children's other grandmother passed away the day before the class. The children will be going to Florida for their grandmothers funeral. I spoke w Victoria a week ago to give her a heads up on what was going on with the family. The grandmother had been in hospice. I went in today( she died this morning ) and spoke w Lynn. The boss is a very respectful woman, the facility is always kept clean, and the employees are very good at what they do. The employees have good cooking experience and are very good with children. I have seen first hand how these employees handle the children and they are the most trustworthy people I have ever seen. I would 100% trust all employees at this facility. My daughter had her 8th birthday party here and it was a fantastic experience for both the children and the adults alike. The staff was excellent and were extremely accommodating. The cupcakes my daughter and her friends made were delicious and I could see that all of the kids were having an amazing time while learning how to cook. Looking for something different than standard bounce places, we booked our daughter's 4th bday at what's cooking without much info other than what we read online. From the first phone call to the day of - everything was perfect. Great communication, attention to detail and flexibility to accommodate guests with dietary restrictions, and really great location and space - we had 20 kids and parents, and it was not cramped. Also we added on cookie cutter goodie bags which cost about as much as it would have to do our own goodie bags, but were so much more worthwhile - and was one less thing we had to do. As with most other places though, things added up beyond base price once we factored in extra kids, adult food, etc. BUT there were more staff than we've ever had at similar sized parties and it all flowed SO well! read more

I just a party here & it was a horrible experience. When we arrived, the previous party had run over and they werent ready for us. The party was completly unorganized. children were constantly crying because there were not enough cooking supplies out. After using raw cookie dough the childen were not given anything to wipe their hands with. Than they were immediately served pizza. We just had my daughters birthday party here. The staff did a nice job and the kids enjoyed it, which is most important. Just be prepared for "sticker shock" when the bill arrives. The party cost $900 for 14 kids! The owner adds a 20% gratuity to the entire check and charges crazy prices for any extra. To make it worse she would not take my American Express card "because their fees are too high". I really like this place for many reasons. My little girl loves going to the cooking classes offered each week and we both really love the speciality holiday workshops they put on throughout the year! It's a fun place to learn about and explore the culinary arts as a young person, and the owner is really so much fun. She definitely cares about the customer's experience. We just went for a birthday party which my daughter had never experienced before, and she really enjoyed that too. They made tie dye cupcakes that they decorated and took home with them which was really unique- I had never seen that done before. One of the highlights of this weekends Oysterfest was experienced on the way out, where we paused at What's Cooking where ladies invited us to decorate cookies for a dollar. Was recently at a b'day party for my daughters friend. My daughter had such a great time! The place is cozy and cute and the staff was great. Victoria was FANTASTIC with the kids! My daughter can be extremely shy at times and she opened right up to her! The kids all had a blast and the cupcakes were DELISH! My husband was thrilled when we came home with a box of cupcakes. I had my daughter's 10 b'day celebration hosted by What's Cooking? on Sunday, Mother's day...I was happy that this was the only venue opened on Sunday!! I was happy that I was able to make a booking so easy. Lynne is the owner of this cooking school. Spoke personally to her and she was so helpful in making sure that my daughter will get the best party ever! They have nice b'day packages with different price ranges, the website gives a descriptive explanation of the different b'day packages that they provide. Love the ladies who hosted the party. My girl and her friends didn't have a bore moment, they said they enjoyed the party pretty much. I must say that the cupcakes were delicious!! The personalized party favors were my favorite! Just bad.....I never write reviews ever but I felt I should write for this business as I do not want other parents to go through this. I had a basic cookie party for my childs birthday and after paying the initial deposit, I was told after the party to pay for the remainder amount which I did however I felt the amount was way more than I expected I just let it be as I got busy with other stuff. The basic cookie party was 449 dollars approx, the owner charged another 150 dollars for service tax and then added on top of it regular tax. The owner mentioned nothing about the service tax when booking the party . Also the owner took extra tip money for the girls working for her. I do not mind tipping but why the extra service tax I have no clue. This is a very shady business. If you do not want to be robbed go somewhere else. The owner is using the kids happiness to rob the parents of their money. Absolutely disgusted. read more
