Huge shout out to Wheel Werks Custom Bikes in Crystal Lake. After a mega mechanical problem with a wheel at last weekends' Ramble century ride, Bob at Wheel Werks lent his personal bike to one of our group members for one of the 20 mile loops so he could keep working on the damaged wheel. Bob had it fixed by the time the loop was done. This is way above and beyond SAG support at an organized bike event. A few years back I went to Wheel Werks wanting to buy a new bike in order to progress in my love of cycling. Bob does not sell bikes, even though this is what a bike shop does. Rather he fits a bike that is right for you. I went in wanting to buy a relaxed geometry bike. Bob said if you want to progress and ride with xxx club you should look at the Cannondale Evo. I was not interested in a race geometry bike, I had always ridden a relax geometry bike, And rolled my eyes at Bob's idea. I took the bike I had intended to buy but wasn't to impressed. Felt like I was dragging a bowling ball behind me. Returning Bob said "try the Evo". Reluctley, I went out the back door with no intention of even liking this bike. I got a block away and thought this is not for me. As I made a U turn and head back to Wheel Werks, I still remember that feeling and saying to myself "gosh is this bike ever alive". I still didn't want to buy it, and if you know Bob, he is not a high-pressure salesman. We talked about it and I returned a few more times and rode it. YES I own that darn Cannondale Evo and have loved it since the day I took it home. I ride with the xxx group and I can ride that Evo all day long because Bob was sure this was the bike for me and he fit it perfectly to me. Stopped in with a flat tire. It was Monday at 11:20 am and I didn't realize they were closed. Stood at the door and watched the person at the counter stare at me with my rim in hand. I guess business must be good enough to not even answer your door. I realized after I stood there you were closed but you were also rude which tells me you don't need my business. I had bought a cheapo bike elsewhere that had a small part wear out prematurely. I stopped in to Wheels Werks see if they had the part, since they're a high end shop they don't normally carry the part I needed but they dug into their salvage bin and found a part that was actually better than my original broken part. They said, "Ehh, how about $2?" Unfortunately I only had a CC on me so asked if that was okay? They said, don't worry about it and let me keep the part. Do you want to get loyal customers? Because that's how you get loyal customers. They could have just, in all fairness said I can come back, but that was worth less than the cost of me leaving the store with what I needed to get back on the road with good feelings and a desire to come back for any other needs to happily spend money. I bought a new BMC and Vittoria wheels from Wheels Werks. The whole experience was great! I first liked that they were a Bike shop first. They are not a Tri shop and oh by the way we have bikes (they can talk Tri if you want). I first spoke with Mattias about the different bikes they offered and the pro and cons. The bike I wanted was ordered and came in when they said it would (I really wanted a new bike). They took the time to fit me to the bike. Afterwards Bob worked with me on getting a new set of wheels, Vittoria Quranos, which I totally love (It takes less watts to get the same speed as the stock wheels). And Josh was good to talk with both times I was there, taking the time to explain the bike and wheels. I would highly recommend Wheel Werks if you are looking for a new bike or service! I will keep going there even though it is a haul for me. read more

Needed some new brake pads as the old ones had zero stopping power in the rain. It's so awesome when a shop is so professional and handles everything like you are a pro rider. I bought my first triathlon bike at Wheel Werks. The owner Bob is very passionate about his bikes and it rubs off. The staff is always friendly, helpful and can answer ANY bike question. Mattias is a person with a heart of gold and bends over backwards to help, he also leads rides from the store when the weather is above freezing. Beth has been so kind to loan me her own bike gloves for a cold weather ride. Josh just explained to me last week what would be the best choice for a trail/mountain bike for me...I am picking up up tomorrow. I cannot wait to pick it up. Mattias has taken great care of my tri bike whenever I have brought it in. I trust all the people there completely, never once have they over charged me or made any mistakes with my bike. This review is long overdue . I purchased a new bike in March this year and right away, while I loved the bike, I had some discomfort with the way I sitting on the bike. I actually started a sciatica which was not very painful but really uncomfortable. I tried, on my own, to move the seat, the stem.... but I would change anything. I started to google and ask some guys in my group ride where should I go to do a proper bike fitting. In June I finally called Wheel Werks and spoke with Bob and could tell right away that he was passionate and I was going to have a professional service. By the way I did call other local shop prior WW and I did not have that sense of a passionate person like Bob was and I called him. The whole session took well over an hour but Bob is very meticulous and look at every details. It was an awesome experience and guess what, my sciatica was gone in no time. THANK YOU Bob and team. This is a bike shop that caters to people who are into biking. The selection of bikes are for serious roadies and triathletes. There are limited mountain bikes. Bob, the owner, is a certified fit consultant that uses a positioning system for your body mechanics. My bike, a $2000 Orbea Composite is his almost most basic bike. When you go in, you are treated honestly and you can trust him. It is not worth it to price shop, as he may be $200 more on a $3000 bike, but you will get the service and changeouts of parts that make it more than worthwhile. read more

THIS is a real bike shop. You won't find low-end or kid's bikes but if you want a quality bike that will fit you right and last, make the trip to Wheel Werks. Bike brands are limited but there's enough that you will get what works for your needs. No hard sell and the service is truly the best in the area. I drive 30 minutes to see Bob and pass at least 5 shops on the way. Several drive out from Chicago. Very few shops like Wheel Werks are left, sadly. I was experiencing some pain in my knees and arms from an improper fit from another bike shop. Bob at Wheel Werks hooked me up to a computer and measured my pedal force and took a bunch of measurements -- and solved the issues I was having -- and may have even made me a little faster. I found out about Wheel Werks from the group that I ride with. I drive 45 minutes to get to Wheel Werks and it is worth it. Super happy with my bike and the service I got. I bought a sweet Surly Pacer sight unseen based on Bob's recommendation, and I couldn't be happier. A bike fitting and needed adjustments were included, which not all shops do. I highly recommend this shop to anyone who is serious about riding and loves their bike more than their car. (You know who you are!) :) It's worth noting that these guys do not treat women riders any differently -- I never felt talked down to.
