The shop is nice, large variety of glass in there. But I do have a small question. I went in today to buy a small glass hand pipe and I saw the yelp 50% off coupon so I went in and asked one of the workers about the coupon and he said "yeah I'll take care of you" and as I asked how much was this one small pipe he says it's normally 30$ but with the coupon it's 15$, now that sounds like they just marked up the price. so when you use a coupon they will give you a higher price on the glass kinda sucked, like really 30$ for a little pipe? Keep in mind it wasn't anything fancy a simple little hand pipe with 2 simple colors and that was 30$? I can get a cheaper one at a dispensary, I would like to see you honor your coupon without doing your little trick that you tried to do today. read more

Broke my glass pipe came in for a new one. Looked around a lot of shops but this one had the coolest pipes. Wood, glass, stone, metal. Pretty much anything you can think of they have it! Prices are good! They also have great deals. The star is super friendly helpful. They totally want to help you find your perfect pipe! Which we did! Did not expect to find one! Not a bad little smoke shop. Extensive collection of sheesha's (hooka, waterpipe, whatever you want to call it), pipes, cigarettes, and the accompanying tobacco, lighters, accessories. They have cigars too, but I don't know much about them. They really take the time to explain the options to you, the pluses and minuses of this or that, and they are overall super helpful in navigating their vast array of smokeables. read more

I came to Whelan's to buy coal for my hookah for they were the only shop around who carried the brand I wanted for a decent price. My first time being here turned out to be a great experience. The staff was very friendly and very helpful when I threw out a few questions about different accessories. Before my shopping had been finished I noticed they had a large variety of homemade shisha ranging from all kinds of flavors. One of the employees gave me a smell sample of all the top selling flavors. I was so pleased that I ended up buying 4 different flavors of shisha. I just wish they carried company name shisha such as Starbuzz. Other than that, this is a great smoke shop to fulfill your needs! read more

I have been going to Whelan's for years, and have always had a completely positive experience. The staff has always been knowledgeable and polite, and have often given me discounts on top of Whelan's already very reasonable prices, or thrown in additional items for free. I have seen a few negative reviews, and I suspect that those people interacted with new employees who brought with them the rude, scamming environment of many other smokeshops. But I have been there many times over the years, and have only had positive experiences, so I suspect that Whelan's management has little tolerance for employees that give poor customer service. read more

Went today to browse and possibly purchase a hookah. I've had cheap novelty hookahs before but finally decided to invest in something a bit more adult. Went in hardly knowing a thing and was given options and guided to a gem, but was also great information about the different brands, styles, materials etc that I had trouble even finding on the internet. Great service: no pressure to buy or up-sell, even threw in a free batch of their house-made tobacco (white peach, yum) and charcoal AFTER the purchase had been made. Not as good as Sunshine Coast in the city, but probably the best in the East Bay. Prices are better than Sunshine, but the selection and quality isn't the same. I think this place focuses more on the pipes and water pipes instead of the hookahs. Still, every time I'm in the area, I'll drop by. One really cool thing is that is you make a large purchase (hookah and/or a crapload of shisha), they'll be somewhat flexible on pricing. read more

Great smoke shop tucked away from the rest of the smoke shops on Telegraph. On the campus side of Bancroft I can tell you that this place is probably my favorite smoke shop on this side of the bay. Good prices, great employee's. Sammy is a great addition to the spot, talking to me for 30 minutes casually about what pieces hit good and what pieces he liked etc. What was really cool is that he let me tryout a water dry hit on a piece I was interested in. Thats how you know this place is legit, Letting you try out a piece (no tobacco or such inside of it, just filled with water). Everyone says go to big al's but if your not looking for a toro, and you can walk around the corner from the shops at telegraph, you wont be disappointed. Hey everybody, my girlfriend and I don't smoke, but we are big fans of Zippo lighters and wanted to look at them and then decided to buy them. Wheelans smoke shop is a great place, and is clean outside which is what made me go in and support their business. Other places people were smoking right in the doorway of the shop and turned me off. Ray the salesman is who helped us and we ended up buying 2 Zippos. We plan on going back there for anything related. He even took his time in filling our Zippos for us. read more

It took me the better part of two months to finally find myself in the neighborhood, but I am sure glad I waited. Whelans is a great shop ran by some really nice folks. My first visit there I had Alex helping me out, he took great care of me and gave be a awesome deal. He made sure that I'll definitely be heading back next time I need glass or want to treat myself to a new rig. They have a really great collection of heady glass from some of the biggest name artist, but they've also got a great selection of heady pieces at a great prices.
