We discovered Hierophant Meadery at Pike Market, where we were encouraged to visit for their Summer Solstice event in Freeland, since we mentioned we were headed to Whidbey already that weekend. The meadery is a quirky, welcoming, family-friendly spot and for this event they featured live music, cosplay (sword fighting in full armor) and fire dancing, along with food vendors. They have picnic grounds, a great taproom, and plenty of mead flavors. Bring your own food, because they don't serve food, only drink here, typically. Or visit during a special event, when they'll have outside vendors as guests and food available. For Summer Solstice they had Whidbey Pies (known for strawberry rhubarb, marrionberry and cherry pies) and a local wood-fired pizza maker. Super fun spot! We came here around 3 on a Thursday so there was no one else. Lots of parking! This place is very cute! Lots of sunny and shaded outdoor seating with some on a patio and some out on the lawn with picnic tables, or inside the building. This is only the second meadery I've been to, and I feel like their flavors are much lighter, without any that I tried leaning towards the sweet dessert style mead. They have flat and bubbly options, as well as some really cool flavors. They have preset flights but on certain days you can create your own, so that's what I did! I personally really liked the spiced apple, PNW chai, and the hopped meadjito was my favorite! They don't make food but they do have a fridge with some items to make mini charcuterie boards! I found out that they sell their products at pcc's and metropolitan markets so I'm excited to grab some more from there! read more

Wow, was this an amazing stop we made on our last visit to Whidby Island! The tasting room is great and there were so many great mead options that were available here. We saw so many great choices we decided to go with a taster set. And I am so glad that we did because each of those meads were amazing! The Butterbee was one we had which had a honey, vanilla flavor. The Spiced Apple was so good with elements of cinnamon, ginger, clove, anise, nettle and more. The Hopped Mead was another good one with the earthiness and hoppiness at play. The Raspberry Session was another one of Steve's choice. It had a great Raspberry presence. The Ginger Peach Session Mead was another good one. I do love ginger! The Pacific Northwest Chai was another great mead... everything you'd expect out of a Chai. We had a few others in that taster set but those really stood out to me with what I listed above. We took a bottle of Mead home as well. The Rose Cardamom Mead is what we took home with us. Once again a highly excellent mead with floral, herbal, sweet, subtle and dry flavor characteristics that were wonderful. High, high praise I'm giving this meadery. I finally made it out to the tasting room, where they were having a sale. It is always great mead, and you can buy a flight of eight for tasting. Friendly people, low-key atmosphere, and of course innovative meads. For under $60, I came away with six bottles, noting that some of them were part of their sale. They have a new nettle beer which will be available outside the meadery in the coming months. If your are on Whidbey take the time to visit. read more

We stopped by their booth at Pike Place Market located across the street from Starbucks. We sampled their standard mead (I believe the Chrysopoeia Traditional off-dry Mead) as well as the Apotheke Session Mead. Both were delicious without being overly sweet like meads we've tried before. Wow! What a cool little spot. My friend boyfriend had us do a stop here since they just moved here. And it was great! The mead I tried was delicious and I even went back and bought the bottle and a bottle of the ginger pear. They got a flight that was really tasty. And the workers were so knowledgeable and nice. I have never been to a meadery before but I was charmed - it's a great, laid-back addition to Whidbey's local stops. The location is nice - just off 20 but far back enough you don't hear the traffic. There are two separate outdoor areas - one more patio-ish and one more yard-ish - which was great as we had our herding dog with us that loves nothing more than to herd little girls and there was a family with several of them running around in the other area. The server was very friendly and informative - I can only remember even trying mead twice before but she did a great job of explaining the different flavors and styles and why things were selected for the tasting tray and what order to taste them in. Tasting tray was in a cute honeycomb style pattern and there were eight pours. We tried them all and found we liked the sparkling, lighter session style meads a lot more than the straight-up meads. After the tasting tray we got pints of the chai and cherry meads. It's funny saying this but I might have been happy with a 10 or 13 ounce pour option too. We got some to go too - all in all a very enjoyable experience! read more

We stopped here on the way to the ferry and we were pleasantly surprised. I always assumed Meade = sweet, but this place proved me wrong. The Meade here comes in a variety of flavors. Some will remind you of wine, while some will remind you of beer. Others have bubbles. The owner was there and talked to us a lot and we had a great time on a Sunday afternoon. Perfect place to chill with a flight of mead to taste. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside (along with everyone else) and enjoyed. The flavors are very creative and distinctive. Really wonderful use of natural herbs and flowers. The only negatives are the price of the bottles and that they don't allow you to pick the flavors of the flight. The price of the flight itself is reasonable, but the tastings are very small amounts. It was enough though and the server was really friendly. I did end up buying one to take home, which I'm sure I'll enjoy. read more

I may not drink beer- but I love mead! I was introduced to Hierophant Meadery the day before while at Pike Market- a young man had samples and bottles of mead for sale and gave me a brochure for Whidbey Island beer, wine, distilleries and meaderies! And guess what- my son is stationed on Whidbey Island and it's on our list of things to do! So I happily added Hierophant to the list of must stop places and boy was I happy to do so! We got 2 flights to share among the three of us and the Butterbee Butterscotch Mead was a huge hit for all of us! So much so- we bought 2 bottles. I had tried the Song of the Elders Session Mead at the market and it was on the flight as well- absolutely delicious! And the other table favorite was Spiced Apple Session Mead which was exceptionally wonderful. We enjoyed the young man who was working and the couple of ladies who came in and asked who was from Florida (my son's license plate is FL)- turns out so were they and our bartender used to live in Clearwater! Small world! All the Fl people in the same place! We spent a small fortune between tasting, mead, t-shirts, pint glasses and more. Even Robert bought here and they do offer a military discount- rare for the area. read more

Stopped by on a camping trip through the islands, and man was it worth it. We planned to skip drinking for this camping trip, but how often do you drive by a meadery. So, my wife and I dropped in and picked up a bottle of Song of the Elders. Exquisite blend of flavors. Truly sophisticated mead. We ended up enjoying it out at our campsite on San Juan Island. Drank it with some wine and cheese while we watched the sunset. Perfection. Can't wait to return and try some other types. read more

We've been waiting to see what type of business was going in here and we are so excited that it's a meadery! As we were headed to Langley we saw their open sign and turned in. Nice tasting room and they allowed dogs! Even better!!! Concrete floor for the dogs to lay on was great! We did the tasting that included 8 tastes for $8. Wow! So many great flavors. My favorites were the chai and raspberry, what will be yours? Lots of outdoor seating and fire pits for the cooler evenings and s'mores kits too! A must stop when you are traveling through! Stopped by here on a whim and SO glad we did! Love the vibe of the whole place and really enjoyed sampling the mead. We got the tasting flight, which was a great way to try a bunch of different types, and also got a glass of the chai, which was delicious!! I regret not buying a few bottles to take home with us. I also loved being able to sit in the chairs in the yard area and just hang out and relax by ourselves for awhile. Great experience! read more
