I've been a customer for almost six years with reliable internet and local phone services. This is a small company, but it is very community-minded provides some amazing services. Anyone who posted previously that the services is bad or expensive is comparing apples to oranges. It is most likely are privileged to own a vacation home or retired here, not year-round residents. They are used to instant and accessible services on the mainland. Sorry folks, but if being on island time is such an inconvenience, then go home. Many others who complain about bad service, is likely at Wifire Coffee, which is NOT the same as WhidbeyTel. This is housed in the customer service building. Honestly, at the coffee house isn't great, I'm not sure why, because as a internet and telephone company they are awesome. Anyway, I've always gotten through to an operator or tech person, it might take a bit if they are dealing with repairs or other service issues that ALL companies experience. However, they have been available 24/7 for years, and I always get through. Talking to a live person is great, my provided services has been great. The only disruptions I had are when the electricity was out, however, my landline still worked. Whidbeytel buries all their service lines, which prevents disruption during wind storms. When a line does go haywire, it might take a few days to locate, troubleshoot, and fix, but the company always does a fantastic job. They even fix any landscaping that they had to dig into. For a local service provider, you really cannot do better than WhidbeyTel. read more

I had been a customer of Whidbey Telecom for 6 years. I was getting terrible del speeds for insanely expensive cost. I inquired about fiber and I would have had to pay 2k just for the hookup. I finally switched to Xfinity for 10 times the speed and half of the cost and a much more reliable product. I go on Whidbey Telecoms portal which I have to verify its me with a password, follow the instructions and cancel my service. You would think that would be a basic task to end a mtm agreement. They say they thought maybe it was not really me and called to verify but they dont have id on their number so it shows as spam and if they called I never heard from them. I was billed over 2 months of additional service with no other explanation. I talked with multiple agents and they argued with me about how I didnt read the "small print" This is the kicker. Not once in all the time that I talked with a rep from Whidbey Telecom did anyone try to retain me as a customer. No questions about what could they do to improve. It costs a company so much more to aquifer new customers as it does to retain current customers. I would have stayed if they would have credited me the amount that they charged me after I quit and worked with me on getting fiber. Just a terrible disregard of customer service. While on the last call with the manager she disconnected the call and I never heard back. I have been calling for two weeks and am #1 in the Q and they won't answer my calls. Whidbey telecom is a dinosaur there is better internet out there that I have seen. If you work from home don't use them a waste of time and constant issues that arise . Go somewhere else for reliable and faster internet . read more

It's 2023 why in the **** is my internet so bad? I work from home so it's important. I've had at least 5 technicians come and and each one tells me something different. I would love for them to make the excuse Rolodex they all share a laughable coffee table book... May 14th, 2018 I was sitting drinking my coffee and over heard a gentlemen asking the blonde employee (I believe she was the manager) a question. Another customer came in and the first gentlemen told the blonde manager lady that it's no problem you can help him first. The blonde employee then looked at the first gentlemen and said "Don't tell me how to do my job!" And the gentlemen said back to her "I was trying to be nice." and then left. I seriously cannot believe this employee is getting away with talking to customers this way. Especially for being on an island where everyone knows each other. I haven't been able to watch TV during prime time for a month. Maybe thank you? My garden looks nice. The dishes are done but I really wanted to watch TV. For over a month, I have been unable to watch TV during primetime. It just times out. It's fine for emails or very low quality video conferences during the day but between 6-9, forget about it. You cannot stream video and no one at Whidbey Telecom could give a rip. Where else are you going to go? I use cellular. I wonder why everyone else doesn't just dump you. You're $20 more than Seattle with 10% of the quality. Get your act together it perish. You have competition. Fix your product or die. I doubt anyone will read this or anyone will care. You don't even answer your weird doorbell arrangement when a customer goes to your office. I had to go around back and wait for 20 minutes for someone at the loading dock to get in touch with customers service. Either get in the game or get out of the game DSL is 20 year old technology. A monopoly that overcharges and doesn't care. I have had WT since dial up, the only consistent factor is inconsistent speeds, connections, etc. They told me initially that my WiFi router was the issue, I bought a new one costing almost $400, once I bought that they told me it was that router and not WT I threw that away. Then they come out with "hop WiFi", their own wireless mesh system that is an additional monthly service fee, this Of course is the answer to all of our internet issues. Then they tell me that they might not work well with Apple devices. Maybe a last ditch effort to pay for their financial gamble on Whidbey TV? After multiple service calls and rebooting the modem hundreds of times they would like me to stay home from work again to have a tech come out because it must be the wiring in the home ( the techs have been here 2 times this month). I can't handle it! I have gone over on my data plan months and months as I cannot rely upon a hard wired connection with WT but for some miraculous reason, can rely on a satellite a thousand miles in the sky... Bottom line, if you have any and I mean ANY other choice in internet on Whidbey Island, RUN RUN RUN! Unfortunately I'm stuck in this eternal HELL of a fraudulent company. read more

How to Ruin a Good Thing I have been a WhidbeyTel (WT) customer under its various names for almost 50 years. I used to brag about this company to people outside their service area, praising their outstanding customer service, technological leadership and personal relationship with their customers. Over the years, sadly, it has become a black hole of incompetence. Specifics: Among WT's first DSL customers, I used and constantly upgraded my DSL because I worked at home. As a network engineer, I understand the technology and know that performance and bandwidth vary depending on traffic at any specific time. However, a decade or so in, paying $70-80 a month for 28 Mbps DSL service that gave me 20-21 Mbps finally got me down. I switched to a cable-based ISP who gives 100 Mbps of bandwidth (and usually exceeds that commitment by 5%-10%) for $40 a month. I discovered on a trip several years ago that WT was marking much of my incoming email as spam, including mail from my longest running correspondent, my spouse. Further, they did it in such a way that the only way to retrieve the mail was to log in through their web interface and search until found. When I called WT to resolve this, their response is that I have to white list every correspondent from whom I want to get email. Yahoo, Gmail, and iCloud don't require this and work without problems. The inevitable conclusion is that WT simply doesn't know how to administer email services and wants to turn their customers into email administrators. What, then, are you paying WT for? A bit painful, but I dumped their email haven't had a problem since. I tried their now-discontinued TV service. They lowballed the price to me upon sign up so I canceled after a one month trial, returned their equipment and got a receipt for same. They nonetheless kept billing me for the service every month thereafter. Three trips to their offices, each resulting in a supervisor admitting the charges were incorrect and promising they would be remedied on the next bill did not fix the issue. I finally got it resolved by filing a case with the Washington State Attorney General's office. Most recently, I changed from a standard phone line to their digital offering so I can get caller ID. Again, they have screwed up and over billed me for two months. Multiple trips to their office during which they admit their error have not resolved the issue. Moving into WT's service area? Run, don't walk, to cable or other ISP and use your cell for voice service. Easier to buy a signal booster for your cell, a one time expense, then to spend endless, unsuccessful, frustrating visits to the parade of indifferent incompetents at WT. Terrible ISP. Worst customer service. Spotty internet that often drops and is throttled, even when they say it doesn't. Ridiculous miscommunications, high prices, and I'll be damned if they don't try to trick you into paying more money if you don't know what your're dealing with. I also had no options other than Whidbey Telecom where I live. They have a monopoly and as a result can charge any amount they want. Boy, do they ever charge!!! Do not use this company. Horrible cable, constant loss of signal, freeze framing, slow internet, and phone messages don't show up until a day or two later. Terrible!! read more

When we lived on Whidbey Island we wanted to go local, so we went with Whidbey Telcom for our internet and cable. They also required we paid for a landline (even though we never used it and didn't want it). Our bill was like $150/month for basic cable, internet, and the phone. We lost internet and cable constantly for days at a time, but would never get any credits or anything for the loss of service. Overall we were never impressed with the services as far as the internet and cable goes, nor the customer service from the company. I would not recommend using Whidbey Telecom if you can help it. read more

I always have had a problem with paying the land phone charge when I didn't need a landline just to have internet service.A terrible thing because I suspect that they are a monopoly and could do as they wish.I just found out that they changed this policy over an year ago so I have been paying it needlessly for over a year and I complained about it several times in the past (For over 10 years!).I was just told by their customer service person that they "aren't required to send out a notice that this policy changed"This is the attitude of this company toward their customers. Every time I've gone to Whidbey telecom, I have been waited on promptly and courteously. Prices on the island are high! That's the price you pay for visiting or living on an island! The Point Roberts crew of WT is great! I ordered internet service for my home and office in Point Roberts. I found the office staff to be intelligent and efficient. The Point Roberts technician is smart, courteous, eager to solve problems, and has vast knowledge and experience. My internet speed wasn't quite up to the advertised levels and he stuck with the issue, working with others in the company, until it was solved. The billing is accurate and prompt. read more

Easily one of the worst ISPs I've seen in recent memory. Incredibly long wait times for even more incredibly lack-luster customer service. I've seen employees be outright disrespectful and rude to customers in their store to point of having said customers leave the store. The services are laughably overpriced, internet speeds are 100% throttled at night without question (I've tested it myself over numerous days), and the available packages are EXTREMELY limited as soon as you get outside of town. To be blunt, it's fairly obvious the company takes advantage of the fact that most of it's customers are retirees who aren't as tech savvy as others. After reading several reviews of employees who worked at the company previously, it would seem a switch in managerial staff in the past couple years has caused intense friction behind the scenes: seeing as this is a family run business, that does not bode well for the future.
