One 8 hour fishing day later...we caught 3 big Mahi Mahi. These were so fun to reel in. Captain Will is super knowledgeable and capable. He steered us through some choppy water, and found the best spots for fish! Tom gave great insight into how to reel and get the fish on board. He went above and beyond keeping the boat clean, packing the fish we caught in ice, monitoring the rods, etc. They make a great, friendly team. However, my husband ended up catching the exact fish he was hoping for, an Ono. We don't get too many of those in Southern California! They were very informative on safety and what to do when you have a big fish on the line. We didn't hook or pull in a single fish all day with six reels active, drove around in circles not catching anything. The crew was nice enough, but that doesn't mean I didn't waste my money and my entire day. 4 people and 2 crew we just drove and talked to each other. Just went on a full day trip with my gf and two other random passengers. If you're okay with spending 300-400pp to watch other people catch fish then this if for you. We watched the other two passengers land one fish and lose one while we didn't even get to touch a rod due to their numbering system and lack of determination for fish. Trolling lures for hours with no production just to put out a ballyhoo bait and have it get hit within under an hour and then not put another one out and replace it for another lure is kind of just embarrassing for a business employing a captain on a boat like that. Not to mention all lures shooting out of the water because of how they had the lines clipped into position and the bigger swell not to be fixed until the final hour or so of the trip. But it was pathetic to get short bit on the fresh bait and swap it out for lure again instead of put another bait rig out. I can't hate too much because they extended the trip about 1-2 hours trying to get me and my gf on a fish but it just didn't work out. You either spend big bucks for the private charter and catch a couple of fish or watch strangers catch a bunch on a boat. Even offered a tip afterwards solemnly expecting captain to tell me to keep it due to lack of catches, but no, he was ready to get his hands on his tip from his clearly satisfied customers! The captain in the first mate did a great job trying to find us fish and making the road as smooth as they could for my pregnant wife. We had a great time although we didn't catch anything but we did get to see some awesome sites beautiful sunrise a school dolphin swim in By us. Was very excited too go out on the boat being as I have been fishing on boats since I was about 12yrs old and getting the chance to fish in Hawaii on vacation was gonna be fun . 2 boat guys very nice , and I know you always takes chance when fishing and especially 1/2 day boats . But MAN ! 200$ for a 4 hour boat ride ! I mean not being a local how do people know that they aren't just riding around , and then the capt says they don't get paid if they don't catch anything 3 people on the charter at 200$ a piece how the heck did they not get paid ? !!!! I think if you don't find the fish the at least cut the customer a slack on the price ! My wife and I heard fishing was hot and called EVERYWHERE to try and get out. The first 5-6 places were either booked or treated us like idiots calling the day before asking for availability. Best day of fishing on the island..captain Mike and first mate Sean are an amazing crew! The ship was pristine, and we caught Mahi Mahi, Yellow Fin Tuna, Hawaiian Salmon (Rainbow Runner) and Ono (wahoo)...highly recommend! They greeted us in the morning bright and early, the boat was clean and the crew were friendly. Despite the ocean being choppy, they made sure that we got out to the Penguin Banks west of Molikai to catch some great fish. The crew were friendly, fun and knew where to find the catch, although my parents were here visiting me and I may not have gone deep sea fishing otherwise, I had so much fun I am going to plan on going again and with this crew! They were able to schedule us with only a days notice for a full day trip. I really can't say enough good things about them. First Mate Sean filleted all the fish after the trip perfectly and we brought home tons of fish and the boat kept half as well. Really amazing day! amazing crew! 2 Stars for the owner, 4 stars for the crew/boat. Told I would get the military discount for $901 including taxes (private boat, half day) (4 hour trip/2adults/two kids), if I paid cash. Unfortunately, the price ballooned to $1009 when I put it on my credit card. I understand fishing is no guarantee, but it did suck a little to ride around for four hours without even getting a hit. The 1st Mate did change the lure toward the end, and the Captain tried frozen fish and the fish finder in a last ditch effort for something. Points for trying! Plus the boat was super clean and comfortable. If you prepared for variable pricing and the uncertain nature of fishing, I would recommend the boat and crew. read more

My son and I went on a full day trip and each were lucky enough to catch a good sized Striped Marlin. Caught yellow fin tuna and kava kava tuna. Shane made fillets out of our catch and Mike told us where to go to have it cooked locally. We walked away with big smiles. Everyone that has taken an offshore charter before knows that the entire trip is made by the crew. Well we are in Hawaii for the bucket list check mark and on that list was for her to catch a big fish. After careful research I decided to go with Whipsaw and that was a great decision. Although we did not bring in any huge fish she was able to reel in a nice yellowfin tuna. Capt. Mike and his mate Shane made the day phenomenal. Both of the guys had great personalities and truly did everything humanly possible to put us on fish. I will say there are some people who are never happy but if you read this review and truly want a great all around experience then book a trip with Whipsaw. I recommend the full day as that gives you 10 hrs of fish chasing fun. On a side note Being parents of a disabled child my true heartfelt gratitude goes out to everyone at whipsaw for working so hard with Make A Wish to grant special days to kids and their families. Nice clean boat with a friendly two man crew who took us out. We opted for the 3/4 day trip at $895 before tax and harbor fees. The waters were pretty rough out that day, probably not the best fishing conditions. Never the less, we were all still pretty excited to try sport fishing for the first time. No solid bites that day, no lure changes, and most of our group were pretty sea sick so we cut the fishing trip short. Got back early around 10:30 am and only did half day fishing but still paid the 3/4 day price. We got skunked that day, but fishing is a hit or miss. Oh well, hoping that we would at least catch one fish but nothing. So just remember, with sport fishing you may not catch anything and it's not cheap either to charter the entire boat. I'll just stick with lake and bottom fishing. read more

These people booked us for a Sunday afternoon fishing trip on a Friday. We get all geared up and are and hour early to the harbor and we got a call from whipsaw wanting to confirm our fishing trip for "Monday" not Sunday the day we were scheduled. It was in black and white on our voucher. So Don the captain and owner basically said there was no way we could get out to fish on Sunday. He seemed very rude and this was our last day available for an expedition. I would NOT recommend this company for any type of fishing or boating. Whipsaw sport fishing gets two thumbs down for their poor customer and managerial skills. read more

An absolutely fantastic and enjoyable experience. I've done extensive freshwater fishing my whole life and never seen anything as exciting as this. We had a lucky day with 4 fish in total, led by a friendly crew that really took care into answering questions and teaching us more about ocean fishing in Hawai'i. We encountered humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins, and even a distant brush with some bait-hungry sharks all as an added bonus! In the end, we took home our catch and had some of the best fresh fish I've ever tasted. Unfortunately some customers don't understand the concept of fishing as a business and what it takes to get a boat out there for the whole day. It's called "fishing", not "catching"! It's about enjoying the experience out on the open ocean, appreciating the wildlife and scenery, and of course trying to hook some mahi mahi. My wife and I fished on the Whipsaw last week, April 18, 2012 with Captain Don and his crew member Ron. We had an awesome experience. Captain Don is very professional and wants to make sure you have an enjoyable time on his boat. The day we went out it was a little windy and a little rough. Captain Don made sure we were always comfortable and safe. The fishing was slow, but I was happy as my wife caught a 30 lb Mahi Mahi. This was her first fishing experience of this type. On February 11,2016 we had another successful day on the Whipsaw. Captain Mike Duffey not only drove the boat but was very involved in assisting crewman Shane Sinclair with landing the fish. Shane is a exceptionally skilled fisherman with a well known reputation as one of the best there is. This is the second year in a row that we've been lucky to be on his boat. My wife, Paula, had the largest catch with a 130 lb. Striped Marlin. We also caught 3 tuna, a wahoo and Mahi: all a nice size. We've enjoyed tuna sashimi and BBQ steaks all week at our condo and on the beach. We will definitely be chartering the Whipsaw again next year. read more
