We boarded our dogs Oakley and Theo from July 19th-28th at Irmo Pet Retreat. We had used them…read morebefore and never had an issue but this is a big enough red flag that I wanted to share. When we dropped them off, Theo (our Labradoodle) had a cut on the end of his back from trying to crawl under our house and scraped it against the concrete. We weren't worried about it since we had been putting Neosporin on it and he couldn't reach it so it wasn't being messed with. The employee there mentioned they had a spray they could use on it and my husband said that would be fine to use it if they wanted. When we got back from our trip, Aaron went to go pick up the dogs. Once he got there, the employee said, "I don't want you to be shocked so I'll tell you now but...all the hair on Theo's back has fallen out." 1st problem: our dogs hair fell out...and we weren't contacted. Sure enough, his whole back was bare and there were some sore spots on his back that you could tell hurt him to touch. We took him to the vet, spent hundreds of dollars running tests and taking skin samples and trying to figure out what could've happened. All the vets and nurses were totally baffled and frustrated alongside us. The vet gave us a call later saying his bloodwork came back fine but the best they could all figure was that it was a chemical burn...they suggested maybe he rolled in cleaning products or something and I needed to figure out what products Irmo Pet Retreat uses. 2nd problem: Our dog lost all hair on his back and has sores from chemical burns...and we weren't contacted. I'll try to attach the screenshots of the email I sent to irmo pet retreat and their response and photos of Theo's poor back/sores. I'm honestly confused and just don't know how to proceed. It would be one thing if an accident happened and then they contacted us...but it's another thing that this happened in their care, and very alarming that they didn't contact us with his significant hair loss. He could've had several things wrong with him and definitely would've needed to be taken to the vet. SO. Seems very shady and anywho, we're pretty disappointed to say the least.

It was a…read moreholiday weekend and the weather was not the best but as a pet owner it is upsetting to hear that my dog was not being let out frequently just because of the rain Picked our dog up after staying a Friday to Tuesday holiday weekend because our normal kennel was booked. Was told over the phone dogs were $30 a night and inside there's a sign that says $36 if weighed more than 55lbs which ours is not - we were charged $36 a night anyway making it more than we planned on. The worst part is he smelt and felt like he had been rolling around in his own pee the whole time he was there. I understand accidents happen at kennels but as someone who used to work at one sending a dog home the way ours was is unacceptable and he should have at the very least been hosed off with water if they noticed the run was dirty. He doesn't have accidents at home and has never been picked up from his regular kennel smelling or feeling like this before.

No resolution or assessment of the seizure or possible stroke issue our dog had over the weekend. Wanted us to come back for ultrasound of abdomen. Thought there was a "mass" that showed up on x-ray. She's 12-13 years old so if there is some "mass" present she most likely wouldn't survive any surgery so what's the point? We were just trying to ascertain why she went into a trance like state for several minutes Saturday evening and then was totally lethargic for the next 10 hours. By Sunday morning she was as normal as ever and ate, drank, did her business and was her usual self. Should have just kept her home and saved the $$$$.

The Dr was extremely compassionate as were the techs and even cried with us when we put our cat down. It's a rare breed of people that are clinically competent and empathetic and my husband and I are grateful for the experience we had today. I know Sammy had 22 great years even though it doesn't seem like enough. Pets are a wondrous gift, the hardship is that we outlive them and saying goodbye to a treasured friend is always difficult.

We always knew how Sadie was doing because Dawn was fantastic with communication and sending photos and/or videos on every visit. Our older dog needed special medication to manage her seizures along with being fed a special diet. Dawn even brought Sadie into an emergency vet very early in the morning on our last trip away because Sadie had difficulty standing and kept us informed every step of the way. Ultra violet system protects them even further from bacteria and kills germs. They also cater to special needs to which i am grateful. The canine respiratory illness does not worry me here. This shelter is one of the worst when it comes to honesty, communication, and compassion toward…read moreboth animals and owners. My situation involved my dog being seized after running at large and biting someone. I will fully admit that my dog was aggressive toward people he didn't know because of trauma from his previous home. As heartbreaking as it was, my family eventually made the difficult decision to euthanize him. What made this situation unbearable was the way the shelter handled it. After multiple phone calls with staff and supervisor Dani, we were clearly told that we could come Saturday to sign the papers, euthanize him, and pick him up afterward. Because he was deeply loved, we visited him several times beforehand. The day before our scheduled date, we came to see him again, discuss giving him a last meal, and sign any paperwork they needed. Instead, we were informed they had already euthanized him without notifying us -- after specifically telling us Saturday was the agreed date. Their excuse was "miscommunication." One explanation was that because my sister visited him Thursday, they assumed it was okay to proceed. Another excuse was that a supervisor approved it because he was considered "a danger." Yet when we directly asked if he was a danger to staff, we were told no, and that they "deal with stuff like this all the time." Even while visiting him, I personally watched staff interact with him physically, and he responded calmly and familiarly with them. The entire situation was handled with a complete lack of professionalism, compassion, and communication. It honestly feels like they knew they could get away with handling things this way because of the circumstances surrounding my dog. No matter the situation, owners deserve honesty, communication, and the chance to properly say goodbye to an animal they loved.
