Whiskers Holistic Petcare is hand's down the best pet store I have even been too! They have been around since 1988. There is so many reasons that this incredible holistic pet store has stood the test of time. Between living Manhattan for more than 25 years and, now living in Brooklyn for 12 years, I'm shocked that I never knew about Whiskers, until very recently. I had many wonderful rescue dogs over the years and, I'm also involved in Rescue. My dog's health is always a number one concern. that's why I'm truly baffled that I didn't know about this amazing store. I am so happy that Whiskers Holistic Per Care was recommended to me. Now I know the only pet shop that I will need in order to take care of my dog. Whiskers offered what is needed to give our companion animals, what is needed for holistic wellness. Not only do they have the best products, they specialize in educating their customers (or pet parents) on what is helpful, harmful and helps the most. During my first visit, I came in with concerns about my Dog Bella's health. Joe, sat down with me for about 1/2 hour. He went over Bella's latest bloodwork and I explained the symptoms that were concerning me. Joe didn't try to push me to buy anything. It wasn't at all about making a "big sale." I also was not told to disregard what Bella's veterinarian had said. Joe helped me pick out the holistic products and healthy choices to help Bella heal and feel good. For me, my dogs are family. Like humans, animals deserve the highest quality of care. The immense selection of products was so much to take in but, in a very positive way! My labradoodle is 11 and i've been using Whiskers most of his life to deliver his food. They have an excellent selection of holistic/raw foods and i trust their advice implicitly when i'm looking to change foods or handle digestive issues. I also like to get their advice to supplement my vet's advice when dealing with issues like upset stomach, weight loss, etc. I find them to be very knowledgable from a holistic standpoint to supplement my vet's more traditional medicine approach and for holistic alternative options. Just wanted to give a warning- Last year I reacued a stray kitten from a construction site in lower Manhattan. The poor girl was severely bloated due to worms in her stomach. She had not been eating for days and was starving. I called this place to ask them if they had any dewormer in stock because I could not find what I needed at other stores. The situation was urgent and I needed to get her care asap. But during that call the person I was speaking to *insisted* that this starving street kitten was in fact bloated due to eating processed cat food- not worms. This was of course a ridiculous claim because she had only been in my care for days and was emaciated. Of course I got that kitten a dewormer elsewhere and it completely resolved her issues, allowing her to eat normally. But it was horrifying to get such awful advice from a professional especially when I was so desperate and stressed about the situation and just trying to find any way to help this poor kitten. If I had followed their advice this kitten would not have survived. Please do not come to this place for medical advice or medication. read more

We are looking for something very specific, and the regular worker with a pair of glasses on spoke to us aggressively like what do you want to know all these are blah blah. When we went in to purchase something, they told us to register online, so we couldn't buy a bag of cookies. Today, because of this, we didn't buy anything. A great small-business alternative to places like Petco. Our dog has a licking habit and was recommended two concoctions, one of which we tried (we're now treating the habit successfully in other ways), and it gave her more energy than she normally has which was great but didn't address the licking. The other tub of whatever was recommended we returned with zero hassle. I'd really love it if they'd start offering the more eco-friendly non-clay litter options now available online so that older shoppers know about them and could try them out (we love Catalyst, the one that Trader Joe's sells isn't for older cats). Also, the store's cat toy section could use an upgrade: There's a plastic brush you can affix onto a coffee table leg or a wall corner I've seen in cat videos and online, by which a cat can comb itself, and Whiskers doesn't seem to even know such things exist even though it seems like a no-brainer in no-space Manhattan. read more

Although they have good intentions, I don't believe whiskers is truly educated in Cats with cancer, or in the herbs that they are using. My kitty was 21 years old and had perfect blood work and breathing. he suddenly had a cold and got diagnosed with having an enlarged tonsil, possibly a mass. They really did not know. A surgical biopsy was not recommended by the vets due to his age. I had Max on a steroid to reduce inflammation and it seemed to be working well. He was eating great and acting better. Because I could not get a true cancer diagnosis, I wanted to help his immune system as best I could. I reached out to Whiskers for advise and they highly recommended Turkey Tail. I did some research and saw that even vets use it along with some Cancer treatments. Because I was doing a delivery, I felt they threw in another product with not much consent or research, in order to up the order rate. It was called Canadian 6. Being Turkey Tail seemed safe and I gave max one drop and he'd seemed fine, I trusted that the Canadian 6 was another soothing recommendation by a store and holistic expert in pets. I saw that it had slippery elm bark which I know for myself is soothing, so I trusted that Joe and the staff guided me in the right direction. I unfortunately did not google the other ingredients. 20 minutes after giving Max just two drops, (diluted in a bit of water and a soft churro) Max came running into my bedroom screaming. It literally sounded Like he was screaming OUCH OUCH! He then lost all coordination dropped to my floor and started panting! It definitely seemed like a strong adverse reaction. I called whiskers immediately and they didn't know what to do or why. I rushed max to the vet where they finally got his breathing under control. They knew nothing about these herbs. Eventually they sent him home with me. Later that day I tried to give max a churro(soft baby like food since he had this throat mass) he literally gave me a "gag" face. The last time he had it was with the Canadian 6. Max ended up going into respiratory distress 4 more times. I had to rush him to emergency 2x. These visits were uber expensive. At this point I was back focusing on his possible cancer, it was not occurring to me that this Canadian 6 could still be in his system. Eventually, with all the suffering, I put my baby to sleep. Afterwards, something was not sitting well with me. Previous to the Canadian 6 max was breathing just fine. I started to google the ingredients. I found that more then half of the ingredients in this were TOXIC to cats, Sheep's Sorell burns a cats mouth and throat terribly and for days. If not eliminated from the system, It's fatal. Rhubarb is also toxic as well as another ingredient. Whiskers Canadian 6 is mixed by them, not a sourced company. I know in some cases certain herbs at very very low doses can be less harmful, however, it's clear that this mix was at toxic levels. I'm so so sad I caused toxicity to my cat especially when I was trying to help him. I really trusted this store, but feel they were just trying to make more money to the delivery order, experimenting. When I wrote in to let the store Know what I researched, they had no idea these ingredients are listed as toxic. Said they have been treating animals for 20 years. This really concerns me and I really had to post this to make pet owners aware that these herbs can truly be dangerous and to always look up every ingredient before trusting the store. read more

Great selection of challenging to find pet goods yet if you don't live in the NYC area be prepared to pay sky high UPS shipping charges to receive any Whiskers products. With their limited and expensive shipping options, I won't be ordering from Whiskers again ... and I'm a 15 year customer. Days ago on the phone I ordered a low cost item ($25) and was told it would cost me $25 to ship it to me in California, a less than $10 shipping cost usually. When I complained about the rate quoted, a Whiskers salesperson told me they would check out other options and get back to me in a few days. Instead of hearing back days later I received a notification that the item was shipped with the exorbitant $25 shipping cost yet received NO PHONE CALL to approve. This morning I phoned to inquire about the wrong charge and was told the worker who promised to call went on vacation ... the manager Brian could care less about my concerns and told me there was no recourse but for me to pay their high shipping rate. read more

I emailed Whiskers Holistic customer service and Lawrence quickly responded, apologized, and said he would follow up with vendor. It turned out the flavor was discontinued and the vendor substituted the new flavor. Lawrence emailed me a return shipping label and also called me to share details from the vendor. They are extremely knowledgeable about all things cats! And I'm sure dogs, too. A few years ago, the owners had a cat that was still alive at 27! And they had a cat that lived to 28! I have been to many pet stores in the past two months and this is ,by far ,the best one in NYC and Brooklyn . The staff were super helpful and kind. My cat's issue has been resolved for now. When I took my cat to the vet after visiting Whiskers , I showed the vet the two products i bought from Whiskers, and told the vet what food they had suggested , and the vet was pleased, (she has always been a supporter of holistic approach to pet care). I came in there the other day after a vet visit. My frenchy was having acid reflux and the vet told me to change the food. So on the recommendation of a neighbor, I headed to Whiskers. The store is tiny, but packed to the roof with all kinds of all natural pet foods and snacks. They have a very knowledgeable staff and the guy helped me find a chicken/beef/grain free food for my dog as well as some wet food options, too. He also gave some advice on how to ease the food into their diet and other tips. He was friendly and nice to my dog, too. NOPE! Never would I recommend this store or company! I found out about Whiskers from a web search and from reviewing their website, I had high hopes. I'm not one to leave a negative review and truly try to find something positive to say about a business. With this said, the only positive statement I can make is that they do sell mostly, quality products. In seeking input & information regarding top quality food options, for my cats, I phoned Whiskers and spoke with Brian first (he was not helpful) - he then transferred me to Randy. In asking for her help, Randy told me to "go to their website and read for myself". She was deflective, condescending and showed no interest in helping me with options in choosing a quality cat food. Then, Randy said to me "I've spoken with you before" (huh? What does that mean?). This was my first time speaking with them! Randy then DISCONNECTED me!!! What are they in business for? Let's cut to it: Whiskers, led by Phil and Joseph, saved my cat's life. Adrianna is 20 years old because of Whiskers' deep, caring knowledge and guidance. At 16 she came down with Kidney Disease - she's always been a tiny cat and I suspected feeding her low protein food would be a mistake - she'd waste away. Phil and Joseph put her on full protein food she loved and a concoction of boosters and powders that gives her the protein she needs but takes the heavy lifting off her kidneys. Within 6 months Adrianna's number were normal. 4 years later, her numbers are only slightly elevated. She is still around because of Whiskers and I am deeply grateful. This used to be my go-to pet supply and advice store for two decades. I recommended them to everyone. But my latest dealings with them have been frustrating and disappointing. I bought a ton of cat food and supplies a few months ago while in the store but arranged for delivery as it was too much to carry. The delivery got messed up for timing and then when it finally arrived the order was completely wrong. Rather than apologizing they seemed annoyed and put out by the whole thing. Then there was a product I bought at their suggestion for my cats fur health. It requires cutting and grinding these hard chewables to add to the wet food they get. I didn't question the product since the people at whisker's had recommended. Two months later I ran out and they no longer carried it so I found elsewhere. The same product was completely different: rather than be hard and dry these were soft and easily breakable. I realized then that the container from whiskers must have been old and likely expired. So I called them to let them know. Again rather than an apology and offer to replace or compensate the attitude was blaming me for not letting them know right away. I tried to explain that I didn't realize until I bought a fresh container but they weren't interested. Mind you I have easily bought over $1,000 of products there over many years and never complained about anything. I feel like they are not the store they used to be. This saddens me. read more

They have great bulk discounts that rival some of the bigger online retailers. My dog needs a renal diet and this store recommended an expensive food from Iceland. Dog loved it. It had a light pink soft texture. I bought a batch and it was brown and hard. I thought, maybe it dried up and it's ok. I gave it to my dog and she threw up everywhere. I exchanged the other packets with the store and those packets were hard and brown. Gave her a small bit and again she threw up. I left messages for that store to call me but got no answer or returned call. Went back in with the bad food and the manager, very uncompassionately and rude, told me to write to the company directly, he's not taking any responsibility as it's not his problem. He wouldn't pull the bad food off the shelf. He also refused to refund my money even though I handed him the uneaten bad food, original bag and receipt!!! After threatening to sue, he gave me my money back. Terrible customer service, only concerned about making money and not your pets health!!!! In response to Randy Ks response below: My dog has always done well with the food BUT your store is carrying a bad batch of the food that has gone brown, hard and moldy. Even one of the sales reps was sparked when I showed it to her saying "wow that's not what it's meant to look like". Your store should be pulling that batch of food so that other dogs don't get sick!!!! The food is GOOD when it's not dark brown and hard!! It's not meant to be like that. See pics!! No doubt about it, this store is good. They are very helpful and really do seem to know a great deal about animals, but do you really have to be that nasty? I expect to have them push their products on me, but they really do go overboard with it. My dog has had diarrhea for a while now and the powder they gave me wasn't working. Not only did they try to push $23 in pills, but another $20 bottle of something to add to his water and another baggy of electrolyte powder as well. To top it all off, he was so nasty and rude that I just walked out. I probably will still come here for a few things here and there, but it will no longer be my go to place. Let's be real. This place is great. From the mural to the people who are not only helpful, but absolutely a delight. I honestly go here every time Im in the neighborhood just cuz lol. For a reasonably small store they offer a really good selection or treats, toys, and pet home needs and for the good quality of it, reasonably priced. Seriously go if you have any pet needs. Any pet. The woman there who told me you can microwave Himalayan salt chews (we call them cheese sticks in out household) to puff them up so they are useful even once they get too small to be chewed literally has made my pups sooo happy/occupied. After hundreds of dollars down the drain at the vet and an ear infection that wouldn't go away for weeks, I decided to go talk to one of the certified professionals (free!!) at Whiskers and see if they had any ideas. With a recommended change of protein (turns out kitty has a poultry allergy) and some simple ear drops, his ears cleared up in TWO DAYS! The staff at Whiskers is beyond helpful and I go back for all my kitty needs. I feel so much better giving my money to a business that truly cares about my pet's health.
