I dont know about bad conditions at the store, all I know is I bought the healtiest little Chihuahua 2009 and he became 15 years old.

We met our perfect puppy Rocket at this store! Yes, of course you should adopt or go to a shelter in a perfect world. But the screening process for those places can take months, and we wanted to have a puppy before I went back to college in August. I unfortunately don't know the name of the people who helped us in the store, but a man with fairly long white hair and glasses (I think) literally saved us from another group of people who tried to buy our puppy by saying "We'll pay more than those people"! He told him that if they would like to buy the puppy from us, they should ask us--lol. Anyway we appreciated that he didn't just sell the puppy to them after they made their offer. We received free items and lots of advice from the store. Our puppy is a Havanese and he is perfect, no problems health-wise or mentally. I gave the store 4 stars because I wasnt happy with how small the cages are and how some of the employees seems to treat them not as gently as I would have liked. However overall it was a great experience. We love our puppy Rocket! read more

I know it's best to adopt not shop. But i like to start with puppies always have - and they are very difficult to come around for adoption. I do however financially support shelters ( 2 of them as a matter fact ). because i love dogs / animals. I actually wanted to be a Vet all my childhood.- but I am not one I walked into A Kennel fifteen years ago, just passing by and i fell in love with my first Yorkshire Terrier Skippy. I was treated extremely professionally / they did not try to sale me anything i did not want. Rather, on the other hand I was bombarding them with questions that were answered methodically - very detailed and accurately. Remember i wanted to be a Vet so my love / care / attention for my dogs any animal runs deep And Skippy gave me 15 beautiful years. ( he is my Yelp profile picture ) I mourn - I cried and i am Still crying. But my husband wanted / needed to fill the void. There are no coincidence. I thought i would browse Instagram just to find solace with some cute Yorkie's faces. AK Instagram profile had a pair posted back in May. Full thick coat. Jet black and very little gold exactly like skippy was . So I called and spoke to Don the next day almost at closing time 6:45 on to be exact. He was not rushing me , but very politely said to me " We just got a litter today " i asked if he had a boy. He replied " one boy , 3 girls ". See skippy was a boy. And my heart skipped a beat. Without telling my husband the next morning I stop by , It so happen that the first thing i am told is that i cant take any home because they have not yet been cleared by the Vet - Of course the Vet I wanted my vet to clear the one I would choose too and surprisingly when I press for info - He happens to be my Vet the best : Dr Zola at University Animal. If you can come across Jack the Lone cowboy, I like to describe him , he is very caring and thorough on the breeds Everyone on site just as years ago know their pets / can tell you about the breeder / the litter / answer feeding question / toy advice / treat appropriateness for every single age / Advice on feeding / new home adjustment discipline / food Ext. You are almost certain to meet Don ( the manager ) he is everywhere and nowhere - I can tell he love his store - respect his staff. Care for each one of his pet selected carefully. As you walk into AK There is no smell . The dogs are clean - pens / crate / cages well attended too - all happy playful or peacefully sleeping- some of course animated or excited to be picked by the site of you. The few cuteness in the window are always playful and joyful and often in pairs or more The indoor cages displays are not reachable by the customers ( strategically placed behind a warp around counter ) so no one can pet or annoy the animals. Rather they are handed to you for no longer then 10 -15 minutes not to be attached / used of being held only to be placed back in their pen over and over again - i find this very respectful of the animals and that is Don's priority ( because a lot of people walk in thinking it's a cuteness zoo in fact when i was there a group is 12 + teens walked in just to gush / swoon and snap photos of the pups ) Now onto the most important question : Did i go home with my puppy.? UPDATE: our puppy, which we purchased from American Kennels, was hospitalized 2 days after we got her, and died a few days later from Canine Distemper Virus. She also had Giardia and Pneumonia. We are filing documents with the Attorney Generals office here in New York. We are also submitting documents to the American Veterinary Medical Association to review the licenses of the Vets the store use, because Distemper "CDV" is easily preventable had she been given the vaccines. In total we spent $8K in medical bills trying to save our puppy, not to mention the trauma of having a puppy die (we couldn't even hold her as she was euthanized because she had to be in an ICU to contain the distemper.) read more

Yikes. Stopped by with a friend on a whim as we passed by. She walked up to one of the guys standing in front of the caves and asked how much a chihuahua pup was. He literally said to her with his actual made of flesh mouth "C'mon, if you have to ask, you can't afford it!" Okay... wtf lol? Who talks to people that way, let alone prospective clients! Let me add that when he finally told us, the freaking puppy was three thousand dollars. I'm sorry but, 3k to support a place that obviously is fishy and works with puppy mills? No. All the puppies are in separate cages, either lying down with seemingly no energy or going wild in the cages. Clearly not having a good time. Read the bad reviews carefully as it seems you get unhealthy "pure bred" dogs from puppy mills who are bred for profit and to live an unfortunate life. Let me add that the sales person was so arrogant and snotty the entire time. He also gladly points this out? Look, guy, being self aware of how much of an "arrogant bastard" you're being (as he puts it in his own words) does not automatically convert it to charm. Just makes you more annoying. This place is miserable. Employees in white coats want to give the impression of a professional enterprise, but they handle the dogs callously and without any perceivable warmth. The puppies are kept isolated in tiny wire-mesh cages with only newspapers to protect their feet from the damaging mesh. They do not get to run and play, not do they get to interact with other puppies, as they should be doing. Many of the puppies look lethargic and some look ill. No animal should be kept isolated and confined as these young dogs are. Please adopt your next puppy from an animal shelter and put this place out of business. read more

Two weeks ago we got our 10-week-old Yorkshire Terrier from American Kennels. We named him Archie. When we got home to Connecticut we took Archie to our vet and he passed his physical exam with flying colors. They told us "Archie is perfect." Of course, we knew that already. He is a happy, confident, energetic and affectionate little guy. He loves everyone he meets. This is the third Yorkie we got from American Kennels. 16 years ago we got two wonderful Yorkies which sadly passed away. I tried to adopt many times and it never worked out. Now I know why. I walked into American Kennels on accident. I HATE stores with dogs in the window. They make me cringe. I go in them and I get so sad and never connect to any of the animals and want to save them all. I'm not sure what brought me in that day. I will never care again because that morning I met my new best friend. The store is spotless. I walked in just as the doors were opening and the staff took great care to say hello and make me feel welcome. I asked first thing, are these dogs from reputable breeders??? I was assured they were. They all looked healthy. The power lifter by night behind the counter knew the facts and temperament of all of them, as he takes great care of them. Later on, I was told the parents and the breeders names and given my new girls full history. But I digress. I saw the most perfect little being and asked to spend time with her. They didn't judge me (I was coming from teaching yoga;-) and said of course you can. It was obvious I was looking for a dog, not just to be cheered up by one. From the moment I met Glory, I knew she was mine. I spent two hours with her. Playing, cuddling, etc. When o decided she was coming home with me, I was given a complete tutorial for a first time dog owner. All of the supplies, set up, etc. I left ready and thrilled. I was given Don, the amazing managers, personal number in case something happened. Which the next morning it did... My pup woke up and couldn't walk, perhaps from playing too hard in her new environment or launching herself across my hardwood floor. I called and they answered right away. Took the best care of me. I brought Glory in and they assured me they would take the best care of her. Which they did. After a vet visit, she was cleared and walking perfectly! I came in a crying mess and everyone comforted me and took the best care of me and my dog. Including a little rawhide present for the new beauty! Listen, I get it. I thought pet stores sucked too. American Kennels has not only given me my new love, but they gave me the start I needed to be a great mom. They are under new owners. Many of the old horrible reviews were under previous ownership. Thank you American Kennels for helping me find the perfect dog! I bought a gorgeous Pomsky puppy from AK about a month ago and had a phenomenal experience. Don, was helpful and made himself available for my many questions, encouraging me to be patient for the right dog, and giving me the space to meet and bond with the puppy in the store for a good while before I took him home. I've observed over the past month, and my puppy remains happy, healthy and loving life. We just took him for his first big veterinarian visit last week, and he cleared the check up, which is also really comforting. Lastly, during this time where so many people are buying dogs, it's easy for stores to exploit you and raise prices (some places I visited quoted me as high as $5K+ for a puppy!!) Don gave me a very fair price for such a beautiful dog. Very pleased with the courtesy and care I received at American Kennels, and if I ever buy an additional dog, I would come back. I bought my Yorkie from this store. She is not only adorable but also has a wonderful temperament. In fact, when I recently brought her to the Veterinarian, he commented 3 times how great a dog she was. Since she is over 6 months now, I brought her in for a haircut. The groomer was so accommodating and attentive and did a great job cutting her hair. I highly recommend this store as I have a wonderful pet thanks to them. read more

I suggest that you do not leave your animal for grooming or daycare. A lot of dogs get nervous while left in a kennel, so they won't eat, become severely dehydrated (better off having someone come to your home). Don and the other workers are extremely knowledgeable and helpful regarding training tips and what treats and bones to buy a puppy (American Made Bully sticks, and to look for trustworthy ingredients in treats). My husband was sold on a cream golden retriever when he was walking to Home Depot before the pandemic started. American Kennels made buying and the first months of owning a puppy amazing. No need to look far, American Kennels is a golden standard for a dog shop. Our golden retriever is now over a year old and is so happy and energetic. I bought my shiztu /poodle mix (Shipoo) 7 years ago from American Kennels & have been happy about our purchase (named Bally) ever since. We were visiting NY & intended to take him home to Michigan that day. However, their vet said he had kennel cough, & would not let him go till he was better. Then due to warm weather, there was a delay in flying him to us because cargo hold has to be a certain temp for dogs to fly. We got him a month later & he's been nothing but a healthy bundle of joy ever since. I will say they seemed to be a bit dodgy about the breeder, and we did receive a piece of paper about his background, but there was no way to trace any info about the breeder via internet. This place makes me so sad. The pups are kept in small cells with grid floors that hurt their paws. They have no toys or water in the cages and are always alone. Some of the dogs were limping and looked unhealthy. They work with one of the worst puppy mills in the United States and a lot of dogs have diseases due to inbreeding. The people there are super rude and off putting, they refused a girl from holding a puppy and asked her age because she didn't seem old enough to get a dog, she was and it was super inappropriate. I am looking for a dog to adopt and they looked just super angry when I didn't get one from them. They literally took the dog I was interested in and THREW it back in the cage. It was painful to watch, if you care even a little bit about these animals don't buy from them, don't fuel their business! It blows my mind that in 2019 a place like this can stay in business. I just stopped in, and left with tears in my eyes and feeling ill for these poor innocent puppies. I'm going to leave out some details to protect my identity as my friend said the owners will call you and harass you on the phone if you write anything bad about them on their yelp page. Here's my nightmare dealing with them: I called asking for a XXX cat and the guy on the phone said they don't have that breed at the moment but have two other fancy cat breeds available for me to come look at. He quoted the prices between $1200 to $1800. That was well within my budget so I agreed. I arrived at the location and a big scary old dude came up and asked me if I needed help. I told him I was the girl who called earlier and he said, "Oh sure. Which breed you want to meet?" I said both since I wasn't familiar with either of them. He turned around and went to one of the cages, GRABBED a cat out of its tiny cage, causing it to let out a light yelp. He basically handed it to me and said SHE'S GOOD CAT. She indeed was a good cat. Very calm and cuddly. I then got to spend time with her for about 30 minutes. The old man came and checked on me and asked if I'm interested, he can get the paper work going. I then asked again how much the cat would be and he goes, "$3600." WTF?!? Total switch and bait. I said... "that's way out of my budget the price that was quoted on the phone." The old man said, "well that was for the other breed. You want to meet one of them?" I had already invested 30 minutes playing with the cat in my lap therefore I' didn't want to change my mind. I asked him if they could lower the price because $3600 is wayyyy out of my budget and I was misled by the quote on the phone. The man left me for a while to go speak to the "owner"? He comes back and goes, "ok my boss said he can let you have it for $2800." ... That's still ONE WHOLE THOUSAND DOLLARS OVER THE QUOTED PRICE. I shook my head, knowing I had fallen into their scam. I handed the cat back to him and said I can't get it...it was just wayyyy over my budget. As I was walking out the door, he yells, "$2200. FINAL OFFER." ...I shook my head and just kept walking. The way they were dropping the price of the animal just seem like they had bought them for dirty cheap so any price is ok. Seems very sketchy to me. Oh also, mind you, the cat's breed listed on its cage was "Persian." But i know what a persian cat look like...it definitely was NOT a persian cat. I wanted a dog during the pandemic and was actually planning to visit some shops I have researched however my family and I were in the area of American Kennels and couldn't help but walk in. We immediately fell in love with my Havanese pup. I was swept up on the emotions and the owners were so personable that I did not look up the breeder until I got home. Turns out the breeder has plenty of open citations, just the first red flag of many. The owners warned us against taking the pup to the vet too soon, saying the vet would charge a lot and try to take advantage. I deeply regret following this advice, since my pup has ongoing health conditions. I didn't notice my pup's front legs were as bowed as they were until his first haircut (see picture) when he was shaved down for the first time. He has ongoing joint issues. He's also been sick most of his life. Giardia, kennel cough, viral papilloma, CCL tear, the list goes on and on. When we took him for his puppy examination and he tested positive for giardia, the AK owner made clear they don't check for giardia and are not responsible. We are regularly at the vet. While I absolutely love my pup, it's clear that there were some questionable breeding practices and AK was not thorough in caring for him. My brother sent me an article about Humane Society investigating AK and my heart dropped. I've worried about the shop's practices for a while but seeing the evidence just made it real. read more

Walked in as we were thinking of buying a puppy. When asked to see one, one of the sales associates automatically assumed we weren't buying and started quoting the price of the dog, talking about how expensive it is, and saying only people seriously looking to buy can hold the puppies -- we were looking to buy until being spoken to, and treated in such a crass, demeaning manner. Other patrons were holding the puppies who weren't even buying them as after they held them the puppies were put back in their respective cages. The store and sales associates seem to only let certain people hold and see the dogs and not others. Horrible and completely unprofessional staff and experience. I saw our puppy - a 10-week old American Bulldog - while walking by AK in late April of this year and immediately knew he would be coming home with us. We went inside and chatted with the workers there about him, then I held him and spent some time with him. We went home, we did some research, we came back, and we took our puppy home that day. AK provided us with his vaccination records, microchip registration, breeder information, parentage and identity information, and some immediate necessities. Everyone comments on his great temperament, personality, and demeanor. Indeed, he is friendly, social, happy, goofy, cuddly, curious, and expressive. He is smart. He was house-trained after only two weeks. He is almost 5 months old now, and he is healthy and continually learning. We stop by AK once in a while because he always wants to go in and say "hi" when we walk by. read more

I had been looking for a dog for a long time and felt with many other kennels until we found Elvis here. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The puppies were very well taken care of, and the staff was super helpful. they really cared about the puppies and the well being. Don the manager knew we were living out of state so made sure that the dog had everything he needed to travel and gave us a kennel, toys and food for free. The purchase that was half the price of what I had been looking at. We took the dog home and he is extremely smart and perfect in every way. They called to check on him and make sure all is well. When I told them we could give him the free carrier he provided back He said Donate it to someone in need. Again, showing how much they care, Great People and very Kind I Highly recommend. You can not make everyone happy but they did everything they could do to help and exceeded my expectations, Don and the staff went above and beyond , they even opened early so I could get the puppy and gave him a bath before I came.
