Tazz knows so incredibly much about pet nutrition and goes above and beyond for her clients. My dog PJ had been suffering from chronic acid reflux for years. After doing a food intolerance test I found he was intolerant to hundreds of ingredients and couldn't eat any commercial food. He also wasn't keeping home-cooked meals down. I was at a total loss before consulting with Tazz. She knew exactly what PJ needed and completely turned his health around. She gave infinite amount of advice during our first appointment for both food and lifestyle products and talked well beyond my allotted time. I am also impressed by how responsive she's been to my follow-up questions. PJ is now healthier than he's been in years. I admit it! Tazz is a friend. She adopted a puppy from me almost 20 yrs ago. Not sure who was luckier me or the dog who was very large and lived to be over 16. Even then her knowledge of nutrition was amazing.. and her thirst to learn more and more . It never stops I always asked questions.. what to feed which holistic products would help this or that, which doctors or practitioners. My partner and I had a subpar experience due to a condescending and unpleasant staff member. We are new dog owners (we have just rescued our pet in October) and were hoping to learn more about the kind of food that would be best for him. Instead of offering comprehensive guidance, the staff member kept interjecting and correcting us as if we were being tested on canine nutrition. She then launched into a tirade against a specific brand we inquired about. Given we came to ask the most basic questions and sought help from a purported specialist, this experience was as frustrating as it was taxing. Neither of us had any interest in futile verbal combat on a topic we knew very little about. I can't imagine how this kind of behavior helps their business and I hope that person can take notes in customer service from other stores in the area. read more

I foster kittens and go through a ton of cat food, but unfortunately my little guys are quite particular and I've wasted plenty of money on recipes that they don't like. With that in mind, I love brands that offer you a discount or small bag to sample to be sure they're going to be happy before handing over $30 on the full bag of food. Was happy to find this store just a few blocks from my office, stopped by on my lunch break today and was happy to see the lovely options they had on display. I was asked if I needed help finding anything, but was quickly made aware that no discounts or coupons are taken at the store. No further questions on who I was shopping for or what options they might be able to suggest. To me this was a missed opportunity when I've specifically come to your store and could have become a return customer as they're one of the few that offer this specific brand. One thing my kittens are never particular about is where I buy their food, so I'll happily go somewhere else that fosters that sense of community that I've experienced elsewhere. read more

Tazz Latifi is absolutely amazing! So knowledgeable about nutrition for dogs and all the different brands and types of pet food... The food she picked for our dog (after he almost died due to anesthesia) helped us save and rehabilitate him, he recovered and thrived. Tazz is very direct and does not mince her words - even my husband was afraid of her :-))) But we laughed and loved her for that, she obviously knows what's best for the dog's health and doesn't tolerate nonsense :-)) We would highly recommend her to anyone who wants the best nutritional advice for their dog. read more

What other reviews have said about the owner are spot on. I was hesitant to contact this place based on the negative reviews but always take reviews with a grain of salt. I called inquiring about availability to get my pet groomed. The lady was pleasant at first and unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately!) they did not have availability when I called. The lady then asked if I wanted to schedule something for the upcoming weeks. She was still pleasant and I thought -"ok glad I called because it doesn't seem like my experience is the same as some of the negative reviews". Then I asked "how many groomers are there?" Literally that was my question which set the owner off. She immediately got defensive, suspicious and condescending. She snickers back with an attitude "that's a weird question - why?" I replied "it's not really a weird question, I'm asking because I want to know how many groomers you have there and how many years of experience they each have so I can ask for a specific groomer based on that information ". She practically cuts me off, speaking over me and replies in a condescending tone and still with attitude "I've been in business for over 15 years and they have all been with me since". Hard to believe this place has been in business that long with such a bad attitude. And really - it's not a weird question AT ALL. I have asked this same question to every single groomer I have gone to - in big cities across the US and not once have I ever had this reaction. From what others have said - all your products are sold online or at other stores so you should listen and know that customer service is literally the only thing that differentiates you (or to be more accurate, you lack of customer service). I called another pet store/grooming place nearby (on other side of West street in Battery Park City) and asked the same question. The business owner didn't hesitate to answer and did so very pleasantly. I will be making my grooming appt there instead. Save yourself the time and frustration and don't even bother with this place. I wish I had listened, I would have saved my time and peace of mind (!). read more

All of the negative reviews below about the highly opinionated dark-haired woman were likely about the owner herself. I shop at this store quite often as it is close to my apartment and carries treats and other chews my dog likes. I am very particular about what I give my dog, so I wasn't totally bothered by the prices. They are pretty standard for high-end treats and supplements. The staff is very friendly, but the owner is just horrible. She's lucky she's not there often. She is extremely condescending and thinks she knows best for your dog. I went into the store recently looking for a certain product. They didn't have any in stock, but I made a point to tell one of the employees that the documentary she recommended to me last time was helpful, and told her that I will be switching my dog to a raw food diet. The owner interjected herself into the conversation, asked what company I was using, and while admitting knowing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about this company (a mom and pop small organic farm upstate that has been in this business for forever), proceeded to question their products and advice just so she could recommend the raw food brand that she carries in store (which, by the way, is fermented and sitting in her freezer for who knows how long). Having done about a million hours of research and gathering recommendations from others, I am extremely confident in the company that I chose (organic, not processed, straight from the farm to my door in a delivery truck, excellent customer service). Despite the fact that she is not even a holistic veterinarian, she clearly thinks very highly of herself. She even said "well, I would rather you do that [go with that company] than feed kibble," as if to say "big mistake not going with the brand we carry, but it's better than nothing." I never go out of my way to write a negative review, but a word of advice to the owner, ALL of your products can be purchased online. Listen to your customers, don't assume you know more than they do, and don't be condescending and rude. And give your staff a raise because they are the people keeping your business alive. This is the place I go to when I want to pamper my pooch. They have a great selection of organic foods, carry the cutest clothes and "green" items like the hemp leash and body harness I just bought my little shih tsu. Prices are competitive and it is very close to my job so I can wander around during lunch and not have to worry about making a special trip out of my way on my way home for my pet's needs. I was in love with this place. First time went very well. He received the cutest hair cut. Then the second time he was in there for over 3 hours and they only clipped his nails. They apologized for not getting to him and offered us a discount for his rescheduled grooming session which they didn't honor. The last time we brought him in I requested a small trim because i wanted him to stay hairy & fluffy. When we picked him up he had the worst hair cut. It wasn't even around the ears and legs and they had shaven off his eyebrows. To top it off they left a cut on his penis and didn't even mention it. 3 stars because i really liked his first hair cut. Just brought my poodle child, Roxie here yesterday for her first real NYC grooming experience - wooo weeee!! We were excited. Everyone at Petropolis is so friendly and helpful. Rox was a little nervous and they all came to say hello and helped calm her. Rox received the full Ferrari treatment in the grooming department - trimmed nails (her mani & pedi look great!), pulled ear hairs, top of the line poodle cut with all the lush shampoo and conditioner treatments. Took about 1.5 hours to complete - when I picked Roxie up I almost didn't recognize my fabulous, dazzling looking child. She was so happy and looked fantastic. She should have posed for a Pantene Pro-V hair commercial - she looked fabulous. I love her new cut. I will def be coming back. Prices run $90 for a full grooming service - completely worth it, especially knowing they have professional groomers like Tamoka who take care of your precious. Great job Petropolis! read more

After calling 6-7 places around the city searching for dog snow boots--something besides the balloon-like ones that I can't get on my dog for the life of me--Petropolis was one of only two places in the city that still had dog boots left. By the time I got there, Mary had set aside two boots that she thought might fit my dog based on what I told her over the phone. I ended up getting a pair of Muttluks, x-small. They were NOT cheap, but she assured me that they are worth the money (and with the storm, I couldn't wait to order them online for slightly cheaper). Important note: for snow boots, they do NOT do refunds or exchanges. This made me really, really hesitant to buy them because I didn't have my dog with me to try them on! But Mary and Veronica told me that given my situation, if they really didn't fit, I could come back the next day for an exchange. Well, it all worked out. As Mary suspected, they fit him perfectly. I'm still mastering the art of getting these things on quickly and getting them to STAY (my dog fights all boots!) but these have more promise than any other brand I have tried. Went in this morning looking for a dog jacket for our pup Maggie. They were in the midst of stocking fall clothing, so I decided to pick up treats instead. I asked about pig ears, because Maggie loves them and they don't flake. However, the owner gave me a really good education on why they are really no good! She told me how she actually visits some of the places that make the dog chews she supplies, which was quite refreshing. She mentioned the conditions under which most pig ears are produced, and I vowed to no longer buy them. I was really impressed by her passion for providing the best treats for pups, and took her recommendation to try cow tendons instead. She also recommended freezing any chew to ensure bacteria etc are killed, and I had never heard that before. Very helpful. We'll continue to frequent Petropolis, and really appreciate that businesses like this are still around. read more

I am a new dog owner having recently taken in a retired racing greyhound. My Brunhilde loves in Petropolis in the same way a kid loves a candy store. It is well laid out with so much stock to choose from. The Manager and her staff have been very helpful in picking out the right dog food and snacks. I also took the dog who is usually skittish to have her nails done and it was a breeze. I now use their delivery service which is very reliable. Remember it is easy to order online but this business was devastated after Hurricane Sandy. I feel it is important as local residents that we keep supporting these businesses. read more

Our search for wet cat food that's low glycemic and free of guar and xantham gums and additives lead us here! Having a diabetic cat with pancreatitis flare ups and other underlying GI issues, including possible food allergies, has made us educate ourselves about nutrition and think outside the box. It's not easy to locate products locally that don't have the conventional fillers and toxins so we are so happy to have Petropolis! The staff members are so knowledgeable and dedicated to pet wellness, especially for difficult cases. They are eager to share research that may help. As a pet owner, it's always hard to find a good grooming place for your baby. Luckily we found Petropolis and we could not be happier. We've been here several times for Caesar's haircut. Every time, the groomer (sorry but I don't remember her name) did exactly what we asked for - gave Caesar a "Schnauzer" cut with short or no "skirt" depending on the weather. I don't like long beard around Caesar's face and my husband is exactly the opposite, he wants the beard to be as long as possible. Facing such contradicting directions from us, the groomer somehow always managed to give Caesar's beard a trim but also kept the desirable length, leaving both of us happy whenever we picked him up. It's been a new hobby of mine to check out all the cute pet stores in the city on the weekends. About two weekends ago, I visited Petropolis in Financial District. I was a little dissappointed to find that it was also very Petco-looking, without many 'cute" accessories for my small pups. (only New York Dog Shop and Trixie & peanut had cute, designer accessories). However, I was very impressed with their friendly staff and their healthy food selections. They carry the very best and healthiest dog food out there INCLUDING raw meat, which says a lot about this store. They did not have many selections on shampoos, harnesses and such that I was looking for, but I plan to come here to restock on the dry and canned food and raw meat. read more

Petropolis was one of the many pet stores I visited while preparing for my 5 year-old Dachshund to arrive from down South and found its staff to be the most friendly and helpful of all of them without any of the patron-stalking I've experienced at other stores. This was clearly not limited to my own experience, however, since a woman returned to the store while I was there to thank one of its staff members for her suggestion of a remedy that had cured her cat of some type of ailment. The staff member not only remembered this particular customer, but seemed genuinely interested in the status update. Incidentally, the store also has a wonderful selection for its (boutique) size. I plan to return to get advice on (and purchase) a new, healthier dog food for my dachshund and happily recommend the store to other pet owners as well. read more

I was elated to find a local store that carries such high quality kibble from Orijen and Evo. Petropolis is an amazing private pet store. Tazz and her staff really care about animals and their people. They go above and beyond selling products and services. Instead, they serve as consultants for all issues related to animals, from healthcare, mental health, training, diet/nutrition, and much more. When people in the 'hood have animal-related questions Petropolis serves as an excellent resource. Tazz is a generous spirit and involved in various rescue groups...donating money, products, services and her time to animals causes. I foster "fluffy" dogs from time to time and they're often a neglected, filthy, matted mess! Petropolis grooms these for free as a community service, and I simply tip the groomer. As far as the "retail" aspect goes, Petropolis carries high-quality products - great toys (including almost all of the J.W. line, which is hard to find in local stores), premium pet foods (including frozen and freeze-dried raw products), fantastic treats (many made in the U.S.), holistic remedies/supplements, and super accessories. The grooming services are also excellent, and my dogs come out looking beautiful with their new 'do's. The store has really good "energy" too - so much so that my own dog drags me there when we're nearby. :-) In essence, Petropolis is much more than a pet store - it's a fabulous resource for the entire neighborhood and animal-loving community. read more

They have a really good selection of just about everything--toys, food, accessories, you name it. Petropolis is a neighborhood pet store where you actually feel treated like a good neighbor. The staff here are all friendly and accommodating. The products are high quality. And shopping at Petropolis is actually a pleasure. I live about a mile away and enjoy heading over there for a dog walk most of the time, but they're glad to make a delivery on days when my schedule is a bit more packed. I work very close to this store. I love to support local non big box NYC stores! Sadly, I'd rather walk to a different state to the next closest store to give my business too. You'd almost think they don't want to stay in business considering how they treat their "customers." It is clear they care more about pets than people but pets can't purchase their products/services. My boyfriend got me a puppy for my birthday, and I am head over heals in love with my Boston Terrier.(from a pet shop here in nyc, a woman there scolded me about how awful pet stores are and how one should NEVER patronize such a place) Anyway, I left with some food I spent hours researching on the internet that will help my puppy be the happiest and healthiest he can be. Although, now doubting all my life choices thanks to that woman. My puppy was going through some separation anxiety, I was looking and researching for some remedies like calming collars, toys, milk etc. I came back because they are, admittedly, very knowledgeable. Worst decision ever. I explained my issue, the woman gave me useless and unsolicited advice like recommending a private dog trainer (which I looked into and costs well into the thousands of dollars) and other advice that was either above what I can afford or offering solutions that he should never be left alone for more than 2 hours, which yea I agree but I have a job, and work, to pay for things, and take care of him. I would leave to visit him multiple times a day until he got acclimated... Anyway, the dark haired woman proceeded to come to the conclusion that I AM NOT FIT TO PARENT THE PUPPY. She then told me her groomer LOVES Boston Terriers and I should consider "RE-HOMING" MYYYYY pet. At this point, I was shaking with fury and was about to act out of character, and that is not easy to get me to that point. This store literally GOES OUT OF THEIR WAY to impart their superior knowledge and their superiority in every way on you. I don't know what complex SOME (keyword some, extremely nice and helpful blonde woman helped me once and it was a great experience) of your employees or you have but it was the worst customer service I have ever had in any establishment ever. If you want to relive that cringe worthy Rodeo Drive boutique scene in Pretty Woman as Julia Roberts was belittled, judged, mocked, and made to feel inferior. Go to Petropolis, you wont be disappointed. Otherwise, if you want to have a good day... go somewhere else, literally anywhere else. Duane Reade sells some of the same products your store does, everything you carry can be either purchased online or somewhere else. Advice to you and your employees... customer service is the ONLY thing that sets you apart from any other pet store. 5 hours in the DMV would be a reprieve from my experience there. To the owner, instead of negating and denying all the comments about abysmal service... find out who these nasty people are and fire them. I asked about one of the raw food brands and if one line changed its name and she gave me this attitude that implied I was dumb. I was in a pinch and ran out of food for my dog and was happy to find a place near my office that had pet supplies. I bought the food, went home and found extra food at home. I went to return the food which was unopened and never touched. I was told that due to Covid, I could not return the unopened food. I could completely understand if the item was a toy, bed, food bowl, or clothing item, etc, but this was unopened food that was bought the other day. I asked the store if I could at least get a credit because money is very tight and the food cost $30 - at least with a credit I could buy something within the store that I could use for my dog instead. I was told no. At the time of the purchase I was not told that I couldn't return unopened food and there is no sign near the register indicating this policy. I decided to leave the unopened and untouched food with them in their donation pile. read more

They're so friendly in this shop and they have a great selection. But the reason they get five stars from me is for going over the top in helping me find a wet food that my picky fat cat would eat to help him lose weight. I went in to the store to explain my problem, that my cat needed to switch to a special kind of grain-free wet food but he didn't like any that I had given him so far. She knew right away why he wouldn't eat the wet food (something about kitty carb addiction that my vet later confirmed), and suggested several different wet foods that, in her experience, were popular. And it worked! I'd been striking out, but he liked several of the ones she suggested. She knew her stuff, and that's where I go now. read more

Okay, now this is a mom and pop store that rocks. I can see why people travel to come to this pet store. The space is small, but they really have everything good and healthy for pets. I noticed a special emphasis on raw food, grain-free foods, grooming supplies and toys, in particular. You aren't going to find designer clothes or pet play pens here. The emphasis here is on pet health. The Manager knows a great deal about dogs and was able to educate me on what I was feeding my puppy, namely, what I thought was healthy, but I learned that even most high-end brand name kibble out there is processed low grade and sometimes diseased meat along with grain filler with some vitamins thrown in to make up for the lack of nutrition. So we actually end up feeding our pets what obviously we wouldn't eat ourselves, but even worse food than they would be eating in nature in the wild. I purchased some grain-free high quality canned meat here and the Manager was so good to provide me some samples of raw meat (a variety which they sell here in a huge fridge). The Manager also saw me trying to pick out toys and after asking what kind of dog and size she helped me pick out a a few toys and told me the pig ears I had selected were going to be too big for my puppy. She really cared about what worked for the puppy even if that meant me putting back some of the toys and treats I had been randomly selecting to buy and substituting with more appropriate toys. My puppy has loved all the toys I've bought for her from this store and enjoyed the raw meat. I already supplement her diet with cooked broiled chicken and beef on my own, human-grade, and will be reevaluating the whole kibble situation. Those brand name kibble products are easy, lazy and cheap, but it is like setting your dog up for health problems and maybe in the long-run shortening your dog's life. After a terrible experience at a groomer in my neighborhood I had been shopping around for a new one and thankfully found Petropolis. I could tell right away from talking to Tazz on the phone that this was the place. She was so understanding, reassuring and kind that my worries went away and I booked the appointment. She did NOT disappoint. My 2 year old Persian who is the love of my life looks absolutely amazing. The lion cut is perfection. She looks so cute! The best part though is how Sweet Pea reacted. She was terrified when I took her out of her carrier (something that only developed after the visit to the bad groomer).
