I like supporting local businesses but recently had a negative experience here. I purchased one bag of dry dog food (a brand that I buy all the time direct from manufacturer) and was slightly surprised when I saw the expiration was only a few months away, which is pretty uncommon with dry food. I decided to still proceed as it hadn't expired and needless to say my dog was quite ill from this particular bag of food. He vomited and at several points wouldn't even go near it. When I came in to let the cashier know, she surprisingly didn't do anything besides for telling me to let the manufacturer know. I come in at least once a week and a store credit would've at least been a nice gesture. There was also another time a few weeks ago when I was about to buy chicken broth for my pup but it expired in dec 2020 and was still on the shelf. Overall, I would just say to be extra careful with any food related purchases given the issues with expirations or bad product. read more

Three stars because they have a good wide variety of premium dog food and treats sold individually such as duck and chicken feet, and different types of jerky. Sadly, the customer service leaves much to desire and what kind of pet store does not supply paper bags to customers to bag up treats? Upon entry, the cashier -blond Eastern European looking young woman- muttered a hello without looking up as I browsed with two dogs in tow. When I saw there were some great treats to buy as rewards for my pups, I grabbed a couple and asked for a bag. The cashier rolled her eyes and said nothing as I looked for a bag, shrugged and said she could just put the treats in their regular plastic bags --which by the way are so thin , there's no way anyone could purchase a case of food or large bag of dry food in them. As a result of this persons attitude, I decided against making my purchase and left empty handed. If it weren't for the selection, I would've given this venue 1 star. Minus one star for the two lazy guys that work there. I went in one day to get some seasoning because my dog had stopped eating his meals and I got no help. I asked how receptive dogs are to it, what online reviews have said about the Halo seasoning (the only one they had) - I was getting horrible cell service and couldn't look up the reviews myself, and trying to get any help out of them was like pulling teeth! I bought the seasoning which didn't help at all and then never came back. Now that it's -20 degrees in NY, Petopia is on my way home from work and with the closing of Petco, I had no choice but to drop in again. My experience was completely different this time. The sweet girl working that evening talked to me about my puppy's needs, his picky eating, the different brands of dog food, why vets recommend what they do, she gave me some free samples, and directed me to items on sale. I ended up coming back three days in a row to purchase more of her suggestions to give to my dog. The verdict just in case you were curious: Evangers wet food ended up being the only thing he'd eat after we sampled tons of other types including Blue, Science Diet, Natures Balance, Wellness, Weruvia, etc.. read more

LOVE this pet store. They are always sooo nice and the store is clean. I live next door to Petco and I always choose to go here (a few blocks away) since it's so much more pleasant. I can't tell you how many times I've encountered teens with attitude at the cash register at Petco. Vomit. I stopped it here briefly. Im glad they opened up as the neighborhood Petco had closed. I called ahead to make sure they carried Halo dog food. The woman who answered was very friendly and quick to ask if I also wanted to know if they had a certain flavor which i appreciated. Once I arrived I was greeted upon entering. The space is small but seems to stock alot of items. I didn't get a chance to fully experience the store. Once I do I will update my review. read more

This is my favorite pet store, and I REALLY like pets :) Petco may be where the pets go, but Petopia is where the people who own the pets go. They have all the same foods that other pet stores have, but I like the variety and selection they have of toys (for cats and dogs). Food: They offer novel protein foods (my cats prefer the natural balance duck flavor) - but please, don't feed your cat a novel protein source (duck, rabbit, lamb) unless there is a medical reason (i.e. IBD). I'm a wee bit of a professional so you can trust this ;) They have a great selection of foods, variety of brands and samples for most dry food diets. They also have great accessories like automated water dishes, great cat brushes (i.e. the furmanator) and great cat treats (i.e greenies, etc). Other than the great products, they are also conviently located on 3rd avenue, have great customer service and keep late hours. I love this store because I usually take my dog on walks, and I stop by here and they have a little doggie fountain that's really convenient. What makes this store cool is that they have all the dog food brands you could possibly think of ie. (taste of the wild,eve..etc) and different flavors! Staff is pretty nice and prices are a bit more than petco, but if you're not ordering in bulk its not so bad. They also sell accessories for dogs and cats. read more

This is our favorite local pet store. They staff is knowledgeable and nice the the prices are reasonable. I've had it with the overpriced chain stores like Petco, so Petopia is a breath of fresh air for us. They help with fittings of collars and harnesses, and they have a great assortment of toys and chews. Overall, an excellent experience every time. Great prices. I compare prices on everything and this pet supply store is always honest with their prices. Just check the expiration dates, once in a blue moon they slip up on the expiration date. IF YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE FREE TREATS IN THE FRONT CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE ON THE BAG. FOR YEARS THEY HAVE BEEN GIVING AWAY --EXPIRED PET TREATS!!!!!!!!! YES I CATCH EVERYTHING. I've recently switched to this store even though it's farther from my apartment since they have such a great selection and really reasonable prices. It's a great place for anyone who feeds their pet natural or holistic foods and treats. They carry lots of great brands and offer free same day delivery. My only complaint is that the staff can be hit or miss. I've had a few employees who seem completely uninterested in helping me and when I ask they basically brush me off. I usually go in knowing what I want or wait until a more helpful employee is available for recommendations. read more

There I was, rolling up 3rd Avenue and in need of some beagle chow, when serendipitously I ran across Petopia. They had the food and an impressive array of squeaky toys, biscuits, beds, dog raincoats, pretty much everything you'd expect in a well-stocked pet store. And stuff for cats. It's a clean place and everything looked fresh. A few bucks cheaper than some of the other local pet supply stores, too. Oh, and free delivery, so now I can just call and get that big bag o' beagle chow dropped at my door. read more

5-Star pet store! I visit the store close to daily. The employees really love pets and love greeting them. The store is not that big, but stocks a wide selection of products, primarily for dogs and cats. The prices are pretty much in line with other NYC pet stores; and on some items their prices are lower. I highly recommend your checking into this store. read more

I have been doing business with this store for over 2 years and have spent thousands of dollars. A few weeks ago I purchased some items and about 4 days later wanted to return a $9.99 item because i purchased it by mistake. I was told that they could only give me store credit because thats store policy and could not return the money to my credit card. I asked to speak to the mgr and he was just as blindsided as the clerk. I asked him if he was willing to lose a very good customer over $9.99. He told me yes he was because he wasn't going to get fired by going against store policy. I told him that he wasn't going to be fire because he made a management decision. If he was then he himself had bigger problem with his job. I had to accept the store credit and will use it in the future and never go back. One of the worst stores for customer service. I have been buying my dog food, toys, treat, etc... from them since they opened. The dry dog food has bugs (small black weevils) in it and they admitted to me they saw one walk across the counter and did not know what it was. I have thrown out the previous bags, but this one I had to bring back I am tired of this dry food and wasting my money. They say to me you don't have a receipt (yeh I carried it from Flushing for my health), write to the company he says. I was not even asking for the $11.00, put it towards another food. Sorry he says we can't do that. They lost a good customer because I will never buy from them again all for $11.00. read more

Given some of the other reviews - I was extremely disappointed with the place - 3 guys behind the counter and all too busy eating and/or involved in their own conversation to assist. We were the only customers in the place and even when we asked for help they said they had no idea on sizing of a harness!! Really?? And this is a pet store!! Spent $200 and really wish I would have gone elsewhere - anywhere when they even faked to care about my business!! Not even a thank you or please come back - just all my items SHOVED into a bag and tossed on the counter and he turned his back yo us to continue his co- worker conversation!! The staff has horrible attitudes and are not helpful. Everything is overpriced, and the staff prioritizes ripping people off rather than providing the best customer service. I was told I could return a brush for a refund within 7 days; when I returned 5 days later, the store manager said I could only exchange for another item or store credit, even though I was within the 7 days and the brush was in the same bag I went home with it in, completely packaged, and receipt included. Would not recommend this store to anyone. Many other pet stores in the area that put their customers first. read more
