Very friendly staff. Great selection of drinks. Cash only but deal with it. Really enjoyed the look and ceilings.

Stopped in for another meal…read more Food: The food was excellent. They have eleven different sliders, so we ordered four different ones, along with a side of the haystack onion rings. Service: There was an issue with our order. Apparently, it did not "print" back in the kitchen. We ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes before someone figured out what had happened. They acknowledged the mistake, apologized, and comped our drinks. Atmosphere: They now have outdoor entertainment every evening, and there is plenty of seating to choose from. The traffic around the roundabout intersection can get noisy, but I think they simply turn up the volume to compensate. A good spot for smoked meats and other sandwiches.

Visited Friday night at 530 for dinner. I am in town visiting my friend and I'm from Arizona. The…read morereviews for the potato crusted fish were great, so I was looking forward to trying fish fry for the first time. I understand that this is a hole in the wall type of establishment, but I think it's so weird that you sit at the table to look at the menu, and then go up to the counter to order. Then you get your drinks and you go sit back down. It's a pretty small place, there's only about a dozen tables total So it fills up very quickly! It wasn't too busy when we arrived. We sat down and decided what we wanted, and then my friend and I went up to the counter to order. There were three of us total. We waited over an hour before my friend's boyfriend finally got up to go check on the status of our food. There were four tables around us that came to the restaurant after we got there, and all got their food before us. He came back and said that the waiter told him that the food should be out any minute. Then the guy who was at the counter who took our order, came over to the table a couple minutes later and said "that was my bad guys, I forgot to hit fire, it'll be about 20 minutes", meaning he forgot to send the order to the kitchen. We waited over an hour before he finally came and told us that. Our food came out about 25 minutes later, and then we left shortly after we finished eating. My friend and her boyfriend said the salmon was OK, but it wasn't great. I really enjoyed my fish fry, especially the potato crusted one. I also tried the potato cakes and they were mediocre and not hot. Overall, super disappointed with this entire visit. They didn't come out and apologize, they didn't offer anything, and it was just a really terrible experience overall having to wait that long. Period.

Food: We ordered the Gyro Wrap, Bacon Cheeseburger, and a side of Sweet Potato Fries. The cheeseburger was very good, although the bacon was a bit dry and overcooked. The sweet potato fries were also good, arriving hot and flavorful. The Gyro Wrap was a bit disappointing. The meat looked like thin slices that had been thawed out and overcooked. On the positive side, the prices were very reasonable. Service: The bartender was very friendly, greeting us as we entered and getting us settled at the bar. She was also the cook and was doing her best to keep drinks filled while preparing food orders. The place became busier after we arrived, and one of the regulars actually jumped behind the bar to act as "Johnny-on-the-spot." How's that for customer loyalty? Apparently, everyone there comes to drink. I ordered a tonic with lime, and the bartender must have heard "tonic" and assumed I wanted a gin and tonic. This happened twice in a row. It was more amusing than upsetting. Atmosphere: The place is a typical small lake bar and grill. The décor is rustic and unpretentious. Regulars are greeted by their first names, and strangers seem to have no hesitation about getting to know their barmates. There is a nice view of the lake just across the road. Unfortunately, when you're sitting at the bar, that view is behind you. I'd like to stop back and try the Prime Rib Sandwich, which came highly recommended by the bartender.

It wasn't until recently when they started to actively promote themselves on social media that I thought of them before others as a place to try. I called in an order of fried haddock with potato pancakes and mozzarella sticks as an appetizer. I also ordered an extra piece of haddock. The food was ok. The the mozzarella sticks looked homemade but the potato pancakes did not. It weirded me out that the haddock was in little pieces instead of traditional sized pieces. The breading didn't have much flavor, which was a shame given how much fish there was. When I asked for the extra piece of fish, I was told by the person that answered the phone that they didn't know the cost as they were just helping out that night. I (unfortunately) didn't press for an answer because extra pieces at other restaurants are typically close to $3 and I was ok with something in that ballpark. To my utter shock, the bill showed the extra piece (or pieces) was an outrageous $9. Never in my wildest dreams would I pay $9 for an extra piece of fish, especially when the haddock dinner itself was only $11. I should have refused the extra piece when I found out or just left without any of the food, but sadly I didn't. It also would have been nice had they waited to make the extra piece(s) until I got there and could inform me that it was $9. I absolutely would have said no thanks at that point. Note, EJ's is cash only. They do have an ATM, but I don't know what the fees are for using it.

I saw a post that Nite Owls made in a foodie group on social media about having key lime pie as a…read morespecial item for the weekend. I figured I was going to have a fish fry somewhere since it was a Friday in Wisconsin, so the pie, coupled with the fact I had never been to Nite Owls, led me to choose them that evening. I ordered a four piece cod fish fry with waffle fries, the white cheddar cheese curds, and a piece of key lime pie. There were very few pictures of food from Nite Owls online, so the fish fry and cheese curds were essentially ordered blindly. The description of the curds said they were white cheddar and lightly breaded. My guess was that meant they had the cornmeal-like kind of breading that white curds usually come with, which I'm not a fan of. I took a chance and ordered them anyway. Unfortunately, my guess was proven right. The curds were greasy on the bottom and not crispy/crunchy, which is typical for that kind of breading on cheese curds. Disappointing, but sadly not the most disappointing part of my meal. The waffle fries were good. Hard to screw up taking them out of a bag and frying them. They were seasoned, not plain, which was good. It's rare when I order a fish fry and don't like the fish. The fish from Nite Owls can be added to that short list. The breading was thick, somehow a little mushy inside, and I didn't care for the flavor at all. I tried to pick it off the fish and it did come off fairly easily, but the flavor of the breading had seeped into the cod and left me not wanting to eat much of that either. Ultimately I finished two of the four pieces without the breading and ended up throwing the other two away. The picture of the pie made it look like it was whipped throughout instead of pie filling with a whipped layer on top. It certainly had the flavor of key lime, but missed out on the substance without the pie filling layer. The gentleman working behind the bar was pleasant and helpful and my bill was reasonable for the amount of food I received. I hate giving them a bad review because the service doesn't deserve one, but the food was lacking in my opinion. If the fish had been tolerable enough to eat all four pieces, this would be a different story.
