I've been thinking about how to do this review the right way for a few days. Anyways here goes..... THERE ARE NO BEDBUGS! I spoke to the gentleman before going out about these reviews. When I showed up we were shown the beds and given the opportunity to walk around with the cabin owner. Everything looked clean. We stayed 4 nights and there were no bites between the 6 of us. Ok now that part is done -- the cabin is a bit past it's prime. There is no Wi-Fi. I am a worry wart so I was nervous about the structure of the home. Starting at the top portion of the house: there were three beds up on the left, careful of the second (or was it the third) from the top stair which isn't truly a stair anymore, it's leaning at a 45 degree angle so it would be easy to slide down the stairs if you aren't using the stair rail. The main floor: the bedroom on this floor is perfectly fine, though the bed is a bit springy. It is connected to a LARGE bathroom with a jet garden tub. The kitchen is lacking cabinet space and counter space, if you are planning on cooking. The fridge is also void of the drawers, and door rails so there's no stage on the door. The stove has seen better days but mostly works fine. The living room has 2 couches, 1 love seat, wood burner, and an older box TV. The floor is a bit weak in here, seemed like one good ragger away from caving in. There are two ways to get to the wrap around porch which is also way past it's prime. That's really all I'll say about that because it's fine enough. There is a grill. The basement: this is where the shower is located. It's also where you get to the hot tub. Other than that there wasn't anything amiss downstairs. Everything was pleasant, it was clean and everything smelled good. My family and I loved this cabin!! Definitely want to come back. It was huge, clean, and accomodating. The owner Doug was super hospitable and took the extra time to greet us and make us feel comfortable. My favorite part was the view. Nice and secluded, yet also close to the grocery store. Saw a lot of negative reviews that seem pretty mean and personal but honestly idk I thought everything was awesome. Great deal and better than I expected. Would recommend and go back. read more

Whispering Pines Cabin in Hocking Hills also owns the Whippoorwill Cabin, and it is grouped together with Whispering Pines on their web site and the hockinghills.com web site.  This review is specifically about the Whippoorwill. Booked a 3-night stay over a month in advance for our anniversary trip at end of March, beginning of April. 4pm check-in. All good, received a call the day of our stay around 3pm saying the facility was ready and we could proceed to the cabin. We were exploring the area, so we didn't actually get to the cabin until about 4 hours later, around 7pm. The cabin is located on a small, almost one lane road, in a rather populated area with a couple of pine trees and a privacy fence around. To our surprise, we found the cabin literally like 15-20 feet from the road. We had just enough room to park our SUV. Was not secluded. Hoping for the best, we unpacked our car and headed inside. The size of the cabin was fine. First thing we do is check out the kitchenette, then the hot tub. We were starting to get a bad vibe after seeing all the ceiling cracks (I could live with the cracks) and bug dirt, then the hot tub. It was cold and gross. The bathroom was dirty. We courteously called the owner to discuss the hot tub and the issues. My husband specifically mentioned about the dirt in hot tub and the temperature of the hot tub and the owner said it was just warming up and that the sediment was a force of nature that could not be helped and we should refer to our contract. (Oh, did I get a contract? I got a confirmation receipt stating, "Things to know before your stay", stating I had read and agree to the rates and policy terms and conditions...nothing was else emailed to me.) He stated that his cleaning people were just there that day. He also said the sediment in the tub was due to all the minerals in the local water. I was concerned about the dirty surfaces in the bathroom. We were so upset, we didn't even unpack. We decided right then to look for another cabin or a motel, by then it was 8pm. We called an told the owner we would be leaving immediately (message left on his voicemail because he wouldn't pick up our call after the first one), informed him that as a courtesy we would be happy to pay for one night, but would like to cancel our reservation for the remaining 2 nights left of the weekend and that we did not want to pay, because of the situation in the cabin. I mean, we booked in anticipation of everything being running to temp and working in order upon arrival, and it was not even close. Even if the hot tub was clean, we could not get in it at 74 degrees. It was not ready 4 hours after he told us it was ready. Nevertheless, he charged us for the whole weekend and never called us back. My guess is there were no cleaning people and he went to the cabin at 3pm and turned all the power on, then left and told us it was ready. I wish I would have seen the previous reviews here before booking. It was a stressful, unpleasant start to our anniversary weekend. I waited almost a month to see if the owner would refund the 2 nights that we did not use, before I posted this review, but he never returned our call. In addition, the whole house was dirty, dead bugs under the mattress, empty water bottles lying around and dirt and dust everywhere. Other than the view.. my family and I were very disappointed. It doesn't look like the rental is cleaned or maintained. Bugs are expected, but the amount of spiders and cobwebs prove it wasn't even spot cleaned. There were dirty towels and a woman's feminine product under 1 of the beds. Only 1 trash can in the whole house that took us 2 days to find. There were mice running around between the floorboards. And to top it all off, the main thing we looked for in a rental was a hot tub. This review is specifically about Whippoorwill Cabin. This cabin is budget friendly and has it's positives and negatives. I enjoyed my two night stay here as it was relaxing, but there were a few unclear details in the description of the cabin. Positives: - The kitchen came equipped with utensils, pots, pans, cups, bowls and silverware. The stove, freezer, sink and sink worked perfectly. -The T.V had multiple channels that came in clearly. -Towels for the bathroom, dish rags, dish soap and wash clothes are provided so there isn't a hassle to pack them. - There is a hot tub. - The grill comes with grill untensils. -The atmosphere of the cabin and area was relaxing. It has pictures hanging of nature and has hard wood floors (easy to clean up messes)! The backyard is just trees, but good for firewood. Negatives: - The air conditioning is a window air-conditioner, not central air. It is located in the living room/kitchen area so the bedroom got warm at night. -The fire pit wasn't a fire ring and is located right next to a fence which could be dangerous. -The bed is harder than a rock. -The hot tub doesn't have any head rests nor any stairs to get in and out of it. I wish we had read reviews prior to staying here. We stayed at the Whippoorwill cabin and it is not even a CABIN. It seems like a storage shed. Dirty. Only thing that may have been cleaned were the sheets and towels (at least I hope so). Was afraid to touch much without washing hands. Oh, no hand soap, had to use dish washing soap. I'm not even one to write reviews but I feel I must warn people. It's not private. There is a trailer right next to it with a shoddy fence separating you. Hot tub was subpar. No oven mitt... seems like a simple thing to include but no. Dead rat in the trap under the sink. The list can go on and on...... Don't waste your money here. read more

Significant BED BUG INFESTATION: A small group of friends and I arrived at this cabin on 9-16-20. Upon arrival I was impressed with the land of the property, but the cabin itself was deplorable. We tried to be upbeat about the experience and view it as a "rustic" camping trip. The carpeting was majorly stained and filthy. The furniture is very old and the upholstery is odorous and stained. I wasn't comfortable sleeping under the bedding because it looked so filthy. I slept in the loft while my friends slept in the other room. We noticed that evening all the mattresses has plastic enclosures on them. I felt this was suspicious and unusual but thought "maybe the owner is being preventative." I didn't sleep well; the beds were terrible. In the morning I was awoken by an upset friend that found a bed bug on them. I carefully identified this to verify it was indeed a bedbug. It absolutely was. We made the decision to cut our trip short and leave that morning because of this. We left most of our belongings and only took essentials banged in trash bags. The owner was notified and not receptive. He initially argued that the insect was not a bed bug, eventually smashing it with his fingers and smelling it, then stating "mmm, ya. That is a bed bug." He then accused my friends and I of bringing the bugs into the house, refused a refund, and told us to take our arrogant asses of his property. It is now three days later and I have numerous bites showing up that are bed bug bites as do my friends. I had to take major precautions to ensure these were not brought into my home. Hopefully they work. It is an awful feeling to experience. On our drive home he offered a partial refund if everyone in the party would agree to leave no negative feedback. I am unwilling not to report this as no one deserves to experience this type of encounter. Please do not rent this property. This cabin was in severe disrepair. Hot tub was stained and debri in the water. Deck and railing was warped and loose. Living room floor was unstable and soft in several places. Railing at top of upstairs bed room was loose and appeared unsafe. Found four live Spiders and one in the bed. Called owner to discuss the condition and to request a refund and he promptly refused and stated that this is standered for Hocking Hills cabins. Web site clearly misrepresents this cabin in my opinion. Subsequently we have filed a fraud charge with our bank. Due to the condition we did not stay and had to find other accommodations for the weekend. read more

BEDBUGS! BEDBUGS! BEDBUGS! and unreasonable threatening owner! Before my recent visit to Hocking Hills, I stayed at Whippoorwill Cabin. It was an okay stay. It was an economically priced cabin and I wasn't going to be too critical. I just visited in August 2019. After a horrendous night when my girlfriend woke up after a couple of hours to bedbugs on her. We killed a couple blood-filled bed bugs and found several others and we found bites on our skin. After no-sleep and much anxiety, we fled the cabin as quickly as we could. We had to pay extra to check in early at another hotel. We first sequestered everything that we could in plastic bags. We threw away our luggage and bought new. I called the owner before we left and asked for a refund. I was calm and polite even though I knew I was frazzled from lack of sleep and anxiety. He told me it was impossible that they were bedbugs because the mattress is wrapped in plastic. I told him the were F-ing bedbugs and hung up. I wasn't about to argue the point. I then sent him a picture of one the bedbugs we found. I never mentioned anything about a review. He sent me this text: "All my beds are covered with plastic covers. They had to come in on you guys. And charge back or negative review will be met with a visit to a Hocking County court room. I have been here 1 hour NOT 1 BUG CRAWLING AROUND" I sent a polite text back telling him to get an exterminator. I later again asked for a full refund. I explained we had to buy new luggage and throw away many items. Spend a good part of our afternoon in a laundromat and had to pay over $250 in a hotel room. Spending more than the cost in total expenses for the cabin for three nights. After responding that he would only refund half he told me I didn't need to buy new luggage unless I thought it was the source of the bed bugs. Once again accusing us of bringing in bedbugs. I'm in my 50s and my partner is in her 40s. We have never experienced bedbugs in our lives, and we came directly from our clean home to his cabin. His last text reads: "I'm not asking you to admit guilt. I'm asking you to save yourself 2 trips to court here. If a no show, we file a lien on your name in the county you live in. In Michigan. easy stuff." I'm looking forward to my return visit to Hocking County, Bedbug Doug. I'll be claiming all my losses. My wife and I stayed here for three nights for our 38th anniversary in Sept. 17,18, and 19 2016. We look for cabins generally that are pet friendly as we frequently take our two dogs along with us. I know, we're pathetic I understand that. Back to my review. The lot that this cabin sets on is absolutely beautiful. Great adult pine trees in the front, and a beautiful view in the back of a rolling hill, huge woods, animal life and seculision. The cabin on the out side is very rustic looking and at this time of the year when the nights get a little cool the lady bugs and the wasps hang anound the wood siding looking for an entry. We met the owner / manager / maid of the cabin when we arrived and he informed us that he had just finished using a type of bug repellant on the cabin exterior and that would help keep the pasky insects from ruining our vacation. Upon entering right away you could tell this place could use a little TLC. There were fake trees and plants in pots which looked nice but had a lot of dust on them. There were about 5 or 6 wasps flying around in the ceiling near the top of the "A" frame's skylights trying to stay warm and lady bugs in every room. Normally when we stay in a cabin that is pet friendly, that means don't expect a lot of updates and this cabin was no exception. It was built in the late 1970's and it still had some of that eras wallpaper on the wall. The living room furniture was very nice but it was probably 10 or 15 years old. The bed rooms were well appointed but the furniture was showing its age. The kitchen had all of the standard cabin utinsils... nothing matched including plates and bowls. Like all cabins we visit and I'm sure like most people do, we leave extra kitchen gadgets for the for the next guests. Back to the wasps and lady bugs. We turned down the AC to 64 degrees to keep the wasps and lady bugs from flying. The next morning we found them on the floor. We swept them up and threw them outside. The owner had stated that that the area was having a big issue with lady bugs. The cabin is secluded as stated earlier but there is still a reminder that civilization is less then a half mile away to the right of us. Commerce, motorcycles, and cars can be heard in the distance. What is nice is a town called Logan is fairly close which was nice for dining and shopping. One of the more interesting things to note as i stated above off of the back yard, there is a rolling hill and woods. We hiked down the hill, through the woods and up the otherside of the hill and took pictures of the cabin which was probably a half mile way from us. The view was incredible and it was a lifetime of pictures and memories. Hocking hills is always beatiful this time of year and this fall time was no different. We had a great time in hiking, shopping, dining and being amazed at the beauty of the Hocking Hills region. I'm not sure if we'll stay here again. The cabin could definitely use some upgrades but the views are extraordinary. read more

My wife and I booked a weekend here a while back. We begrudgingly stayed the first night because we were exhausted from the travels. Following my late night wake up to get a drink of water we promptly left after the roaches scattered when I turned on the kitchen light. I reported this to the owner and he argued that these were actually some other bug but I know what a cockroach looks like. We went to a hotel and ate the second night because the owner wouldn't refund but we weren't going to let that bad experience ruin our weekend. Find another place-this place is dirty, moldy, and in serious need of remodeling. If you're interested in playing roulette with your immunity system, take a soak in the hot tub. read more

This review is specifically about the Whippoorwill. The Whippoorwill is offered as a budget friendly alternative. We chose it because it was about $300 for the weekend (as opposed to almost $500 for other options in the area). We should have paid the extra $200 for something else. First, the good. It is a legitimate building with electricity, plumbing, a kitchenette, couch, and TV. The bed is comfortable. It is on a fairly secluded road. Now the bad: * We wanted something secluded so we called and asked about it. We were told it was close to the township road, but there was very little traffic and it the hot tub area about back was private. The truth: This shack is right up on the road, so we heard every detail of every car driving by. Which might have been from the next door neighbors (more on that, next). Oh and the fire pit is, well, right between the cabin and the road--meaning right next to your car! * The next door neighbors on the right are a mobile home that I'm pretty sure is running a meth lab. They start up their cars at all hours, idle them loudly in the driveway for hours, and drive on the road in front of the Whippoorwill loudly (they have no mufflers). They play loud music whenever they want, and you can hear them talking when they go outside. The complaint here is you don't feel like you're isolated in the country with that racket next door. * To further provide the illusion of seclusion, there is a picket fence between the Whippoorwill and their property. This means that you aren't looking directly in their windows (or they at you!) when you go to the hot tub. But you still see the trailer and if you have the back porch light on, you'll feel like they can be watching you. * This cabin has 2 windows in front and that is it. No side windows. The back door (off the bedroom) has a window, but not that's not a window you can open to enjoy fresh air. * The hot tub is against the back wall of the house, right outside the bedroom door to the back porch. So every time the hot tub cycles the heat on, you hear/feel the electric hum while you're trying to sleep. This electric buzzing changes in pitch and frequency, so sometimes I wondered if it was experiencing a "problem" (i.e. about to catch fire) which kept me from relaxing. * The hot tub kinda works. It is a hot tub, and it has jets. But the control panel is an ill-fitting replacement panel, the buttons don't always do what the label implies, and some parts like cupholders and headrests are broken off. * While the walls are well insulated, the floor is not. The temp dropped from 60 to 20 F during our stay, and the floor was so cold underfoot it hurt to walk in socks. We wish we brought slippers. * The water pressure was horrible. This is to be expected in the country. But the crappy showerhead in the bathroom shot weak little streams of water in every direction except your body. So it took 45 minutes to rinse the shampoo out of your hair. * The bathroom has no shelves, hooks, or hang bars for your towels and stuff. Really? * Neither does the kitchen. It does have an excellent stove/oven and a functional microwave and freezer/fridge. But there are no ice trays or icemaker in the freezer. The provided plates and bowls are okay, but the 3 little tea cups and 10 red plastic drinking cups don't give the best options to drink from. They did not provide paper towels, but they did provide coffee filters--the wrong ones! The coffeemaker requires basket filters but they provided cone filters. There were about 4-5 knives, including 2 steak knives, and a bunch of forks, but only 2 spoons! The stove pots were good, and the oven pans functional. But a little short on cooking utensils. * The tiny parking space in front of the cabin is a mud pit in the rain. There's no way to avoid tracking clumps of red dirt into the cabin. * The hockinghills web site listed DVD players in the features, but there was not one. There went our movie watching weekend. However, the satellite TV worked well, as long as you don't want premium channels. * The decor was, well, non existent. Cute side tables by the bed, and that is it. Does not feel like a cabin; it feels more like 1/4-size trailer. I am boring myself with all this negativity, so I'll wrap up now. It's a clean, basic place. But it's far short of the expected Hocking Hills cabin experience. Keep looking. read more

We arrived at the cabin and was met by the owner he let us know that he had to drain the hot tub and it would be ready to use later that night...... it was not. We had an infestation of ladybugs, mice and wasps. I was stun twice. We had to throw all our food that was on the counter due to the mice chewing holes in everything. There was mouse poop on everything also. The living room had dead ladybugs all over the floor and there was garbage behind and inside the couches. The bathroom in the basement was horrible!! The floor boards were wet. We had no hand soap in either bathrooms so we had to use the dish soap that was left by someone. We were there when it was raining so the roof leaked above the wood burning stove that we really couldn't use because well there was no wood. If your looking for a cabin that roughing it is good with you then this is the cabin for you. read more

My family (6 plus one dog) stayed at Whispering Pines for 3 nights over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. We were very disappointed with this cabin and lack of professionalism of the owner. Though the sunrise/sunset and views from the cabin's location are beautiful, the interior hasn't received any updating or thorough cleaning for many years. We spent the first 2 hours of our vacation sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming and disinfecting. When we called to complain about the state of the house, the owner disagreed and told us to, "grab a rag and help out." Upon entering the kitchen you notice old stains on peeling wallpaper, tattered rugs which have not been vacuumed and a tile floor that has not been swept nor mopped. A very large bathroom sits in the center of the first floor, but only offers a sink, unwashed toilet and jacuzzi tub which cannot turn on due to non-existent handles. The living room was the most well-furnished, though the bugs all over the floor, dirt on the walls and garbage behind the couch distracted from relaxation. Fortunately we spent most of the days hiking outside. The bedroom mattresses were old, sunken in the middle and bedding on some of the beds did not look/smell clean - 6 laundry loads later they were. The downstairs bathroom offers the only shower and signs of water damage are everywhere. For the cost and effort you'll have to put in to make this house feel clean/comfortable, I wouldn't recommend staying at Whispering Pines. read more

I wish I would have seen the previous review before booking. We did not know about the wasps beforehand and were not comfortable sleeping with them. The bedroom in the basement was cold and musty, bathroom faucet was not installed properly and leaked water everywhere. Kids wanted to take a bath in the jacuzzi tub, but the water was brown. We called the owner and left without spending one night. Owner argued that there were no wasps (see previous review), that we broke the faucet, and that there is rust in the pipes and that's much better for you than city chemicals. He offered to give us a partial refund, but only if we did not post any negative reviews or process a dispute with my cc company. When I didn't agree to this, he threatened to sue me. This review is for the Whispering Pines cabin company in Hocking Hills Ohio , specifically about the whispering Willow cabin. First and foremost what we rented was not a cabin, it was a garage like structure inbetween a cabin and a private residence. Literally sandwiched in there so no privacy as one would expect, even with the fact it was a budget minded cabin rental, it was low quality . From wiring being exposed, to a dangerous step off leading out to the back patio. One could easily fall if they were unaware of how badly damaged the last step was. The porch itself was clearly not up to any construction code as it was two by fours nailed together with gaps big enough for a person to just slip through and fall. The water smelled like eggs and fish, absolutely no water pressure for showers or doing dishes etc. This lovely cramped garage included a dingy hotub that shorted out more often than it worked filled with a tea colored water, again that smelled terrible. Couple that with an all around cramped feeling offering up a space for sale that is supposed to bed four when this is far from what can be a comfortable living space for that many individuals. With all of that out of the way I leave with my family after a four day stay and get a nasty email from the company stating I will have an additional $100 charge because I had too many guest in the cabin(my brother in law showed up for 45 mins and the rest of the occupants were already noted to be present) and my family was "dirty" and "hillbillies". There were no instruction on what to with waste, no outside dumpster so my family and I bagged up all we had and arranged it neatly so housekeeping could address it. The hot tub was also dirty before we used it arguably and they complained that we were supposed to clean it, again no instructions eluding to this fact or instructions once again for waste removal. We cleaned up the best we could making sure all dishes were clean, trash organized, dirty towels folded in bathroom, what else can one do? I thought I was renting a cabin not someone's private home. I did what any normal family would have done as far as the state of the room is concerned before leaving it, it was not trashed. Besides if you leave your customers no instructions or recourse about waste, hot tub rules and regulations or housekeeping needs then what can a customer do? So instead of voicing their complaints like professionals, they literally insulted us in an official capacity whilst giving me an eroneous bill for what on their website said could be present in cabin. They even tried to charge for Having my 8 month child there which is illegal and unacceptable. Never will I stay here again or would suggest other folks get roped in by the fake out, looks good from the road "cabin". Steer clear but if you like being insulted directly, extreme unprofessional behavior, lack luster accommodations and unexpected charges, please stay at whispering pines cabins. read more

This review is about the whispering pines cabin and whipperwool. The owner is extremely unorganized and double booked for the whispering pines cabin. I called during the week to confirm directions, and to get the rest of the details of our stay. We live by Avon, Oh so it is over a 3 hour drive and I am completely unfamiliar with the area. The owner confirmed that the whispering pines cabin was correct and gave the address to me over the phone. 45 minutes into our arrival we had a knock on the door, it was another family?! The woman stated she had a feeling this was going to happen because when she called earlier in the week the owner said he remembered the lady with the pets booking and recalled the name (my name and I have 2 small dogs). The owner then blamed my husband and I for his mistake, moved us to another cabin, then charged us for his not functioning hot tub at the first cabin! Upon arrival,we uncovered the hot tub and it looked like a bubble bath and smelled like bleach water! I hadn't even had a chance to call and tell him before all of this situation started to unfold. The morning after this happened I woke up to a charge on my checking account for 250.00 on top of what I already paid for the wispering poines cabin that we were unable to even stay in. I called the owner to ask what this charge was for and he started that it was for the hot tub having soap in it.....that we couldn't use...and didn't stay in that cabin.....He also informed me that he was "evicting us" from the little crappy cabin he threw us into in the middle of the night!?!? I immediately called the police and they were dumbfounded right along with us over how this could happen! This trip resulted in a police report against the owner, cutting or trip short 2 days, and i if I could give negative stars for our horrific experience I would. Please do not stay here and suffer like we did! This was a terrible experience, and I hope my husband and I can salvage the reset of or first wedding anniversary weekend together..... read more

The cabin wasn't cleaned very well. There were food crumbs on the couch, a freshly stained pillow sitting on a chair in the main bedroom. The hot tub is connected to the cabins hot-water heater, which means that after you are in the hot tub there is no hot water left for you to rinse the chlorine off in the shower. The cabin had 2 queen beds, 2 full beds, and 2 twin beds, sounds good except all of the beds were horribly uncomfortable! My wife and I slept on the floor our second night. The furniture was also extremely uncomfortable. The pillow backs to the couches were practically flat and the seat sagged so far down, the owner had to place boards under the cushions to help support the seats! Everything in the cabin is very outdated, including a microwave from 1980. This cabin needs updated furniture, beds, toilet seats, appliances, and linens. We will not stay here again. Other than this cabin, Hocking Hills is a great vacation destination for the outdoor enthusiast. read more
