It's been a while since I've been here. Back in the day, there were a number of fun club nights and this sleepy area of South Park was underdeveloped. Most of the kids that came around 10 this night were probably not even born..."so get off the dance floor it's mine!!!" LOL! The DJ was playing some great 80s tunes and we just took over our little corner right in front. Great vibe! Everyone was having so much fun! Our bartender, I didn't get her name, was great! So, I actually would rate this bar a 5 in its space as a "dive" bar given the vibe there is always chill and fun-loving. I am writing this review to let the management know, patrons this past Saturday were incredibly disappointed when Krys Da Cat the DJ for Saturday Afternoon Fever had to end her session at 7pm instead of the previous time of 8pm. This made no sense given the next act/DJ was hours away. It had to be a financial loss as well because the bar was full of people having fun, dancing, playing pool and drinking before it was abruptly killed early and people began leaving in droves. Krys Da Kat draws a crowd for Saturday Afternoon Fever with the Soul Train videos playing on the wall. People come there because they love this DJ's selections and transition skills!!! Please bring this event back to its deserved time of 4-8pm and I'll revise my review in a heartbeat. read more

Whistle Stop is a South Park staple in San Diego. During the week it's a fairly quaint little bar with a good tap list and plenty of liquors in stock. They have a good water station, a jukebox, a smoking patio, and table seating in addition to the bar. During weekends there are some really cool shows that take place here, featuring touring bands and local acts, DJs, and dance parties. They have a couple well-known events like Booty Basement and F*uck!ng in the Bushes that happen once or twice each month. Overall it's a fun place to hang out. You'll likely run into a bunch of people you haven't seen in years at a show. Prices are good too. It's great that they now finally take card and not just cash! read more

Yes it's a dive bar, how do you score it less than five knowing this. Apparently other elites. Give it a break, they treat you how you treat them. This place is great, if your not local just act cool. Great selection of craft beer, didn't try the food. They were awesome at making sure I was alright all the time. Bartenders are the best and make the best drinks. Vibe is always on point. They host fun events and the different DJs they bring in are top notch, especially for a smaller neighborhood bar. They even have a juke box with all the hits that plays when there isn't a DJ. Despite not being a soccer bar (and therefore not having the capacity to replicate a soccer bar atmosphere) they played the Mexico game last night and the place was packed! Awesome experience- they have one projector and one other TV and yet everyone was crowded in cheering on Mexico. Been coming here for years now and will continue to do so. read more

I'm a somewhat "regular" customer of the Whistle Stop Bar. I've been there numerous times and my friends' bands often play there. I've never had any negative experience there until today. I'm not even sure how negative it was but it left me with an ambivalent feeling that I need to vent. It was not busy when I entered the bar on Saturday, November 30, 2024. There were about 15 people total. The bartender was alone behind the bar. A tall "dirty blond" guy. The people ahead of me got their drinks and I was next so I stood right next to the bar near a water container. Next to the water container are about four stacks of glasses upside down on a black tray. I was next to the tray and waiting for the bartender to come to me and ask me for my order. But he just stood there at a distance sort of making a strange face. I just waited to see what was going to happen and then the bartender just announces loudly, "WHY does everybody want to stand next to the dirty glasses?! Come on down here..." and was motioning me over towards him. I thought it was strange because it wasn't crowded and I have often ordered from my exact spot before. I also thought it was weird because a different guy walked into the bar and took one of the upside down glasses and poured himself some water. So, those aren't the dirty glasses, I guess. Where were the dirty glasses? The counter was clear. I thought about this later and didn't think there was an "Order Here" sign or anything. I didn't understand why he made a big deal out of it. I just went along with it and walked over to stand in front of him. I ordered a pint and left him a dollar tip. I went and sat down at an empty table and a few minutes later, I noticed a guy walk up to the bar, exactly where I was standing, and order a beer. I noticed that the bartender didn't ask HIM to walk over to his preferred spot. Why not? Why make me do it? I thought this was really odd. Clearly the bartender has control issues or something. I thought about the entire transaction and remembered that he wasn't friendly either. Usually when you walk into a bar, the bartender will greet you in some fashion and then get your drink. No issues. I felt like the whole thing was weird, that the guy wasn't friendly and I wish I hadn't tipped him. Tipping is for services rendered and I feel like I got questionable service. read more

I used to go to Whistle Stop bar every few months many years ago. I had friends who lived nearby and would go to various music events there. I hadn't been there in years, until last week. My friend and I decided to go last minute last Friday night for a Morrisey/Smiths DJ dance night. We arrived about 10 PM and place was pretty packed. People were dancing and singing along to the songs and having a great time. Despite the crowd, it never took long to get a drink. I liked that they had a pretty decent bar. I drank Revolt rose' wine on tap all night. They had a variety of beer, wine, cider and cocktails. Everyone was in a good mood. I loved how the DJ mixed in similar types of music from different eras. The crowd was friendly and some of them were regulars. Even though it was crowded on the dance floor, we always found space to dance. The ladies room was small and a bit awkward, but I also never had to wait very long in line. All in all, I had a blast. It was a great atmosphere, with great music and decent drinks at decent prices. The 80s/90s/Y2K Dance Party at this bar was insanely crowded! I came here with 3 friends to burn some calories after dinner. While we had a great time and enjoyed the music, we all agreed the bar was way over packed and jammed with people. There were people dancing at every nook and cranny, half of them completely wasted. I had countless bodies rubbed up against mine and had beer spilled on me multiple times. People were dancing with their drinks and with the heavy crowd, drinks were splashed everywhere! I felt dirty when we left! This was a fun experience for $10 per person, but I'm not so sure I would come back due to the uncontrolled crowd. read more

The Deep House party with DJ Krysdacat was so fun, she played lots of classic house hits that had us dancing all night. Hoping that turns into a regular monthly party. Good people, good drinks, and always a good time. A fantastic dive bar for South Park locals, whistle stop has so much to offer. They've got a variety of events and musical groups performing to peak your interest. You can go for just a casual beer with friends or spend the night dancing away to 80s & 90s classics. One of my favorite times to go is on Fridays when they have a Japanese Mexican taco fusion pop up out front (they're called Binchos, go follow them now!!) and hang out right outside with a rotating cider from the bar. The bartenders have all been so sweet and genuine, you never feel like you have to fight for their attention but rather they want to have a conversation with you. What's also great is you usually don't pay cover either (I mean as you should). I hope this place continues to be a home away from home for everyone in the community. read more

My wife and I happened to stop by here when Bincho Taco was outside (it was an early Friday evening). We are vegan, and we appreciated the taco options. Don't worry, they serve meat, too, and I'll have to review them someday. We returned on a Saturday night for what I think was an 80's dance party. The cover was $10. I'm from the 80's, and so was most of the music, but I guess it just wasn't my jam. The dance floor was pretty crowded, though. The scene could not have been more different from our first visit. The last Thursday of the month they have an event called Vamp where writers share their stories. I think there were about 8 telling 5-10 minute stories. I was impressed how well everyone did . It was a good mix of humor and pulling at your heart strings . Everyone had done a good job practicing beforehand. It is worth checking out for something different to do. They do ask for a suggested donation . Also it was pretty crowded so get there early if you want a seat Parking was really hard to find so also account for that read more

This was one of the first places I've been to as a barely legal drinker and I remember the good music and the welcoming vibe of the venue. Now that I'm older and revisiting with more coins in my pocket, I can say that this place hasn't changed... in a good way. Ain't gotta fix what ain't broken. Also, I think it's important to mention that they were very welcoming to my sister and her ESA dog. We weren't sure how we were going to be received here getting drinks with our four-legged working companion but the bartender offered her treats and gave her lots of love. He knows who he is. Best attempt on the bar manager at the time to try to reconcile but this is specifically for their "security" working inside on 3/15. We tried to get one of our friends into the men's restroom which has both a urinal and a stall because the women's line was much longer. After ensuring the privacy was met for both the men and women using the men's restroom, it was also found that the security guard protecting the men's restroom was not just making sure privacy was met, but started allowing men into the restroom while we were waiting (two females). This essentially was a slap in the face. All we were trying to do was 1. Use a bathroom 2. Follow rules regardless of man vs woman. This "security guard" was not following just normal human rights or any security protocol, just simply being rude to a customer. This should shed light to the guard which I cannot remember his name, maybe started with a C, but just to the level of disrespect. I'm a sober person that was treated like I can't walk a straight line, all we needed was to pee, and it was turned into a gender battle. Your security guard is confrontational unnecessarily, if I can't write this review at 2 am, I can pee without a fight. read more

Went out dancing here in August. Groovy groovy time. Arrived right as the disco music started, people standing around having beers and hanging (little seating room). Fun lighting. Started dancing by ourselves, someone hinted at us that there is a cool spot in the corner with lights and music that you can get your groove on until the dance floor started popping. And the dance floor started popping! Still enough space to bust into your full moves, rad crowd all around. Seems like it may be a pretty simple neighborhood bar in terms of setting, still my favorite dance party of my month in San Diego (and other visits).
