Was hanging in San Diego over the weekend with the family doing some shopping. While in this area heard a bunch of cheering on a Sunday. After not being able to ignore it anymore walked around the corner and found True North. I was waiting for our party to finish shopping next door so figured I would pop in and grab a quick drink. You seat yourself and it was in between the morning and afternoon games so there was plenty of space. Grabbed a spot at the bar and was greeted by one of their two awesome bartenders T! T was so freaking friendly and when I ordered my go to morning drink 'a bloody maria' she immediately reacted with a huge smile and said you are going to love this. She told me about the other bartenders bloody mix and it did not disappoint whatsoever. It was flavorful spicy and delicious. We just got that and a few beers. They had TVs all over to watch every game so I imagine it's a go to spot for the area. A pleasant surprise. Nice place for a drink and to watch a game, but it ended there for us. Busy afternoon as the music festival was in full swing. First round, great no problem, very professional friendly bartender. Second round, served by a gentleman, assumed was a manager as he looked like he was jumping in to help. Asked for 2 vodka drinks (call brand) and watched him heavy pour one drink and miss the second one completely. Thought it was my mistake and took our drinks back to the table, took one tiny sip of mine realized I was right, brought it back to the bar. I told him that he missed the pour and he started arguing with me saying that I saw him do it right in front of him. I brought him back a full glass. Continued to argue with me, so I canceled our order and told him we would just take out check. Attitude changed, offered to replace my drink. We finished and as I was returning to the bar to pay our bill, I watched him say something to another bartender, who looked over to identify me, and proceeded to serve every customer around me, as I waited to close the tab. North Park certainly looks different today than it did 15 years ago and it's places like True North that have done their part to change the landscape of the neighborhood, all for the better. True North is great for: - Sports. Yes, so many places don't show the fights (UFC/Boxing) and they do. I don't love sports like that but it's always good to know the spots that show them. - Food... typically. My last visit revealed that the kitchen was out of order, which was an absolute bummer. The good thing was that they thought ahead and teamed up with another local spot to offer delivery to True North. - People watching. Much like other spots in NP, the people are half of the fun. I like that True North is a bit different when it comes to North Park and it's good to see that other places have looked at their approach being one that can fly if done well in North Park. read more

This is a serious complaint. My government issued ID was taken and not returned by a worker at this business. After doing my research this is not the first time this has happened. There appears to be a pattern of staff assuming someone is intoxicated or from out of town and then keeping their ID, assuming the person will not follow up and will be forced to replace it. This was not a misunderstanding. I was given false names by employees which I later verified were not their real names. I have documented the timeline and details. And to be clear, race does matter. This is a nighttime issue and Black patrons are disproportionately affected whether the business wants to acknowledge it or not. I expect accountability and a response. We stopped by for a group outing at True North! It was my first time here and was nervous when I heard it was in north park because parking is always a challenge! Luckily there is a parking structure right across the street that is a life savor! It is a very spacious bar ! We sat down and we were asked for drinks almost immediately and explained happy hour. We ordered the Slider Burgers with Fries , Nachos and Mac & Cheese and tacos . Everything was 10/10! I was soo impressed especially being from a bar! The Mac & cheese was my favorite ! Came here Saturday night to watch the UFC fight , Sterling vs O'Malley . It was a $10 cover to enter , which wasn't that bad . Got lucky and found setting . It did take a while for the server to come by. We ordered chicken wings , Brussels sprouts and seared mahi . All 3 dishes we're total miss, not good at all. How can you kiss up Brussels sprouts ?! You can see by the picture it was way under cooked. However, in the beginning the server was better at getting our drinks. Towards the end of the night , she was no where to be found. We had to walk all the way over to the bar to close out . They need to be careful because people could easily walk out. Overall, come for drinks not so much food. read more

FIGHT NIGHT REVIEW: The staff is great and I really enjoyed them. The place itself is not the best for watching fights. You pay a cover to watch UFC FIGHTS but they will still show basketball, football, whatever else on half the TVs. Also the DJ loves to play his music any chance he gets. Daniel Cormier is interviewing a fighter after a win? Too bad, the DJ wants to make sure you hear the same Drake song you've heard on the radio for the thousandth time. If you're an actual fight fan this is not the place to watch fights. Either stop charging a cover, or realize that people are here to watch the actual UFC PPV. Our friends wanted to find a spot to start off the night and a few of them suggested True North - this was my first time coming here so I went in with no expectations, just an agenda to drink. - PARKING - Street parking - if you're lucky you'll find a spot nearby. Otherwise, you'll probably need to circle around a few times and walk a few blocks. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Security checks IDs at the front before you go in. Once you go in, it's open seating with various high tables, booths, and bar seating available. Fairly big interior and there were many groups with more than 8 people. Luckily most of their seating arrangements allowed everyone to be in the same area. Tons of TV screens around the bar and wall edges for you to enjoy games. Waitress comes by with a few menus, and circled around to grab our orders. She did keep on checking in on us throughout the night, which is always appreciated. - DRINKS - They have a pretty good selection of beers on tap and had a few holiday cocktail drinks available. Everything was fairly priced, and the drinks tasted pretty good. Our group enjoyed the Lemon Drop and Sex at the Park. - OVERALL - If you have a large group and want a place to hang out and grab a few drinks, True North will definitely be able to house you! I've been coming here a lot during the Covid-19 pandemic because it's been fully opened for some time now, with both outdoor and indoor seating available. One of the main reasons we choose True North is because it's a safe bet that they're showing the game we want to watch, such as NBA, NFL, and UFC/boxing fights. We paid $10 recently during the pandemic (Sept 2020) for one of the popular UFC fights, which can still get pretty busy, so I recommend coming early on these nights. Great place for sports, drinks, and finger-food. I've tried their Fully Loaded Tots, Basket of Tots, Sweet Chili Brussels Sprouts, Sweet Chili Wings, BBQ Tenders, and Buffalo Cali Nugs (Cauliflower). Everything is pretty good. Fully Loaded Tots are crispy tots with cheese, salsa, and crema on top, which is great for sharing and has delicious combination of flavors. I like the Sweet Chili Brussels Sprouts too, which was coated evenly in the sauce and the sesame seeds added a crunchy texture to it. I wish the Brussels Sprouts were bigger. Wings are cooked nice & crispy and have a wide range of sauces to pick from, but the Sweet Chili is always the best choice to me. Buffalo Cauliflower was good, but could've been better if it wasn't drenched in sauce. Wide range of alcohol to pick from at their full bar. Service is great! Billy, our usual server, is friendly, quick, and never hesitant to help when we need something. He's awesome every time. Love this place!! I've been coming here most Sundays to watch football and I've always had the best times. The highlight is the all day happy hour on Sundays which is impossible to pass up considering well drinks and beers are $5-$6 and food is cheap as well! They have great bar food as well, I've enjoyed the fries, tacos, and Ceasar salad. It can get really busy but the bartenders are always so helpful and as attentive as they can be considering how packed it can be. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Frankie, who was incredibly welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend coming to watch sports or even just for a drink! read more

Sat at the bar early afternoon on a Sunday. It was pretty quiet but picking up. Ordered a drink and some food off the happy hour menu. The glass the drink came in had obvious lipstick stains and other stains to the point I thought she grabbed from the dirty stack. When I asked for a clean glass she brought out more that looked about as bad as the one she served me in and said their dishwasher doesn't get it clean Food was subpar as well. I don't recommend going here. Too many other spots with higher quality food and drinks. If you do find yourself here, I'd recommend ordering a canned beverage - better chance of it being clean... Staff was nice enough to me and seemed to try to be attentive, but being okay with serving dirty glassware is crazy. Management needs to do better in setting their staff up for success read more

I've been here plenty of times when it's a dance floor, to playoff season, covid at 50% capacity to now outdoors only. If you do go now as of November 16-however long we are in the purple tier it's obviously outdoors only. Kitchen is closed but they give you 5 dollar voucher each person for the restaurant next to them. You pull Up the menu on the QR code on the table and call them And they'll deliver it to you. Only thing is true north takes your credit card when you sit but when the food is delivered they ask for a credit card. No biggie to me but just a heads up. It's a Friday night and there are no more than 100 people here if that and the bar is incredibly slow. It should not take 15-20 minutes to get a drink once ordered. These bartenders would not fair well in an actual high paced atmosphere. The music is decent so that's a plus. The waitress staff is a bit all over the place. They sometimes come to the tables and it takes forever to get a drink order in. It would honestly be much faster to go to the bar on a night like this and that's saying something considered how slow they are as well. It's not busy by industry standards but they are simply slow. Eh this place is just ok. Maybe it's an off night but I've been to better. Hell chilis is better than this with drinks. Id hate to see how long food takes. read more

The female bartenders with the tattoos were very rude. As soon as we ordered our drinks she wanted us to cash out, not even giving us the opportunity to order food. We then told her we wanted to order and she gave my friend and I attitude when ordering. The other bartender gave us our check and stood there waiting for us to pay. I gave her cash and she never returned with my change. When our food came out I had no silverware and told two other employees I was waiting on silverware. The ambience is pretty hip, paying garage right across the street, location in a busy North Park area. But, the tables are sticky, booth chairs could use a wiping down, and service is not great. Even if a server does come to your table, if you started a tab with the bar, the server can't put your order on your tab. Uhhh...then what's the point? To boot, you have to order fix from a restaurant next door. There's a kitchen, but nothing happening in there. You call a number that's on the menus asks the food gets delivered to your table, which is pretty cool. The food is good, but so expensive! I have been here several times and each time this place gets worse and worse. Last time we came here over a year ago for UFC fights and cover was $10. Service was awful and we had a big group of people that had a large tab. We decided to give it another try today and as we are walking in the bouncer told us that that the cover is $20 per person. We had a group of 6 people that immediately said no and went to another bar in old town that has a $5 cover. Wondering if next year cover will be $30? Absolutely ridiculous. For a big group like us it would have made more sense to buy the fight at home. Given all the reviews here lately, it's obvious that it's going downhill.
