I was surprised at the lack of professionalism with the bartender there. I didn't catch her name but she only carded me and not my boyfriend (who put in the order). She scoffed at my drink order and was unitentive during every interaction. When we closed the tab she was trying to guess my boyfriends last name saying it was a ridiculous name and tried laughing it off. We went before and Mike was working. Who wudda thunk it? Not me, but this place is waaaaay better than I remember it, but the last time I walked through the front door of this very unassuming place was well over 10 years ago. What took me so long? Honestly, not a damn clue. A friend of mine hit me up this past Saturday and asked if I wanted to grab lunch, somewhere in the sun and I didn't have a damn thing going on so I jumped all over it, with a suggestion as of where to go, nonetheless. "Let's hit Los Panchos for some cevivhe and some margaritas on the patio" and she was game for the adventure. We had our lunch, a few drinks, and caught some sun on the patio but as 4:00 approached we realized that we'd have to find another location for the Padres game and CJ's was a quick walk down the road. Done and done. When we walked in it was just as dark as I remember and the bar was loaded with what seemed to be regulars, all chatting it up with the bartender. The tables in this small joint were empty so we grabbed one of those with our drinks before a few seats opened up at the bar. Ya know, you really don't know what a bar is all about until you actually sit at the bar itself. You learn about the staff, the locals, and the gossip - there was plenty of all of that. The day was fine but it got better when the evening bartender walked in... Mikey, I believe? Well, we will call him Mikey. The game ended with a Padres win and we started talking music with Mikey. The dude knows his s#it and not only were we talking about some obscure bands that aren't very mainstream, we started playing them on the jukebox. "You know these guys?" and "How about this band? They're from (fill in the blank)." He knew it all, and while he's a San Diegan via Texas, he has a lock on the music that fueled the scene here for many, many years. T'was a good ol' time talking music with someone who knows a little something, that's for sure. We'll be back. We're fans. I'm not sure when as I'm no longer living in the hood but it's a place that I'd seek out for a good time on a Friday or Saturday night. Thanks for the good times and better tunes ! read more

So, I came here the other day for the first time after living right around the corner for 2 years. We walked in, sit at the bar and the bartender asked what we wanted. We said we needed a minute to decide. Well that minute turned into more like 10 minutes, sitting there waiting for her to come back as she was socializing with other customers..? We get our drinks, everything's cool. But the entire time we were there she was terribly unpleasant to be around. We made several attempts to chat with her and figure out what we did to cause her to treat us like that? We never figured it out. If I was reviewing based on our bartender it'd be one star. This place can grow on you. Since I just moved to the area I've been checking out my new surroundings and My Hunny and I stumbled upon CJ's. It's a small dive bar with lots of small TVs. Prices are decent and the bartenders are pretty cool. Two thumbs up for Sylvia!! It's a cash only bar but you can always run across the street to Mission Credit Union ATM instead of paying the ATM machine inside of CJ's. They have a small patio for the smokers and/or people watchers in the front of the bar...almost makes you feel like you're in County with the crazy metal bars they have. If you sit in the prime seat the bartender will even serve you drinks through the window. What makes this place interesting are the people...We've been some crazy ass people here and some super cool people. You have some 80 year old ladies to 21 year old cool kids. You got the jocks to the gay guys to the Hillbillies to the people that just got off work from UCSD. It's always been adventure. Oh and don't forget Fernando, the owner that works in the mornings...funny as hell but his staff thinks he a major jerk. Best tip I got for you is if you're hungry and don't want to wait in that long ass line at Sushi Deli just walk in place your order come back 20 minutes later and eat at one of the booths in CJs. Most irritating thing about CJs though is that the mirror in the woman's bathroom is so high and can only see my chin if my standing on my tiptoes. This place is a real dump. I love it. I come here on occasion for a cheap buzz, second hand smoke and television. They have a lot of flat screen tvs everywhere, so catching football on a Sunday is actually kinda cool. Some helpful stuff: Cash only but ATM inside, few beers on tap (Stone IPA, Stella, Guinness, Bud, CL, others), they have bar snacks available for purchase, but they let you bring outside food in (nearby: Bronx, JBox, Panda, Med. Only complaint, there's a small patio to smoke, but all the smoke just gets in the bar because of the opening and closing of the doors and the wind blowing it inside...so basically a useless feature to keep smoke out of the bar. read more

A Dive bar with a low key vibe and great shot and a beer specials. I've been to grimmier dive bars and I've been to more hipster ones- this dive bar is somewhere in between. With a few vintage wrap around black leather booths and a bar to sit at, the place isn't huge but can still accommodate a decent size group of people. The bartenders pour strong so it's great that there is a jack in the box next door to get drunk food at afterwards. read more

This is a solid, intimate place to to check out NFL football. I know it's open year around and it's always a quality place for a cheap drink... but I usually only dive in around football season. For the fantasy football geeks... this is clutch. They've got free wifi, so you can sit at the bar, check out the games on FOX or CBS and check on your fantasy team in real time. I've done this... and let me tell you, it rules! However, it does make me think about the football fans of yesteryear... you know, back when it was only the Bears, Packers Giants and all those legendary teams. If they could only see these geeks watching football with their laptops propped open... they'd probably shart themselves. $3 or $4 bucks will get you just about any cocktail or beer in the house. "Oh the places you will go..." Walking down Washington randomly on a Sunday afternoon, my friend Logan and I decided to stop into CJ's Club. It was dark. It was gritty. It was intimate. We sat down at a booth for a drink. From our booth, we could look over at the bar regulars. A pretty bartender made us drinks. The price was decent. We drank and talked about life. Moments later a ruckus distracts our attention. A man was trying to pick up a girl in his drunken state--apparently her uncle was also there. The man, late 30s and obviously an intoxicated hobo, was asked to leave. The bartender said, "He's a regular, don't worry about him, he'll just go home and sleep it off." We shrug it off and continue with our drinks. We talk about why Logan doesn't want to date me. She's in a very weird place in life. It's okay, I'm a big kid, and I can take the rejection. Perhaps there wasn't enough excitement in dating a man in his late 20s? Whatever the reason, I wasn't the one for her. In the corner of my eye, I could see a man with a 2 by 4 charge into the bar... drunk hobo had returned with a vengeance! He begins to assault the uncle of the young lady. In his drunken state though, he wasn't successful. I leaped up to my feet with such speed that my friend Logan had vanished into a blur behind me. The man was pushed down onto our table. Our drinks spilled. Glass was broken. Logan had made it safely to the back of the bar. The hobo ran out. The police were called. We cleaned everything up. I had gin and tonic all over me and adrenaline still coursing through my body. The bartender apologized profusely and bought me some more drinks. two police officers arrived minutes later and interviewed the patrons. When we left, we found that the hobo was handcuffed outside. Apparently he stuck around trying to get food at the Jack in the Box next door. It was a strange day. I don't know what to really think of CJ's, as I've not been back there since. It's not really a club. It's not really that divey. It's just another bar on Washington, but I'll be remembering this anecdote for a very long time. read more

Ive been driving past this place for years and finally made it in last wknd. Got a parking spot right in front of Sushi Deli which made me smirk knowing that I was taking precious parking away from them . Cash only ! However , they do have an ATM . Hanging out in OB as much as I do. Im prepared for this. Prices are cheap ! $13 for a gin and tonic ( Tanquerey ?), shot of Jamesons and a Guinness. Lovely. The crowd that night was pretty sporadic. Old dudes, young girls in their twenties, a couple of hipster types, and regular looking folks. I would definitely come back if I just want a cocktail and if I dont want to run into anyone that I might know. Place is pretty small looking but its got some big booths. The bar itself probably has only ten stools. Overall, not a bad place to chill out. read more
