We came here for Father's Day breakfast! It was very busy, but very organized! The food was amazing! There was 6 of us and we all got different meals and they were all so yummy! Our waitress was great and on top of things, the food runners and people who picked up plates, were fast and friendly! The owner stopped by to make sure everything was ok! My girlfriend and I just moved to Fox Lake but so far we have yet to find a better breakfast! Great service both times we've been. Food is absolutely delicious. Served prompt and hot, even when they're busy. The decor is spot on. Miniature trains in displays give it a rustic but comfortable feel. The menu is straight forward with something for every breakfast lover. So far we have tried the Smoked Sausage Benedict, The Conductor Breakfast, The Cowboy Skillet and Chicken Fried Steak. Everything was made fresh and tastes home cooked. The fresh biscuits were other worldly. The waitress was on top of refills. Any time we needed anything we got it immediately. A salesman at the Ray auto group referred us to Whistle Stop and I can't believe we've never been here. This is in downtown Fox Lake by the train station, but they have a great private parking lot with lots of room--which they need. We got the last table around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday. There is a small diner bar, booths, and tables. We were greeted by a friendly younger lady. Then I think the male owner brought us coffee and tea. The waitress was completely on the ball, for the rest of the meal. We had one half-order of biscuits and gravy with two eggs. The half order was an entire plate of food. Glad we didn't get the full order. We also had a burger, medium, and it was a little more like medium-well, but it was so good, that it doesn't warrant taking away a star. Went to breakfast with my boyfriend here today. Good friendly greeting as we walked in, politely asked if we'd like a table or booth, once seated we asked about their pies, the one we wanted to get we were told that someone else has already requested to buy it, but the waiter went back and had a pie made for us! That was sweet. Once we ordered our food, it was out within minutes! Almost no waiting! Speedy cooking! The waiter came to us a couple of times just to make sure we enjoy the food, such a friendly face and attitude. Once we got our check the waiter gave us the option of either going to the register to pay or she would take everything and do it for us! A perfect place if you like to put ketchup and hot sauce on your eggs. Probably closer to a 3.5 for me. Ambiance and service are excellent. Never had my coffee go cold or my plate sit dirty. Gracious, friendly, fun. On the food it was mixed. The Fajita skillet was "awesome". The 4 cheese skillet was good, spoiled only by undercooked eggs and the choice of a processed cheese slice. My 15-month old son makes it very difficult to go out to eat. But we always know at the Whistle Stop our service will be excellent and our food will be out in record fast time. Even on a busy weekend we usually have our food within 10 minutes. Very baby friendly! Staff is usually awesome, everybody has bad days. We loved this place! Their breakfast was delicious! We went at 1:30 on a Sunday and were sat immediately. The service was fast and friendly. I had thin French Toast and loved it. My boyfriend had biscuits and gravy and liked it a lot. We both had bacon crispy and it was amazing, cooked crispy on the griddle not in a microwave. We both liked the coffee too. Pricing was fair. We stopped in for breakfast during the week. We ordered the Country fried steak and the cinnamon crepes. They were both really good. The only thing is the service was slloooww. We sat at our table for awhile before anyone came up and then after we got our food no one checked on us until we were trying to get our check. I hope they were just having a bad day. I went to Whistle Stop Cafe with my two year old nephew this morning for a quick bite. The service was extraordinary! the moment we walk in, the waitress sat us down and gave my nephew a toy and a book and took my drink order. The waitstaff was an attentive and helpful. I'm giving this place 3 stars because the food is excellent. My only problem with this place is the older guy that's usually working at the register. My wife and I are late breakfast eaters and this place closes at 2 on Sunday's so most the time we arrive there around 1, well every single damn time we walk in this guy looks at us and then looks at the clock and acts so rude that we've arrived close to closing time. Really not for me. I have given it so many tries, and it does have positive aspects, but overall it just doesn't measure up for me. Positives: Homemade, real, wonderful pies, every day!. Their train theme is neat. Friendly staff. Convenient. Love the name. The retro feel and style are something I love, so I want to love Whistle Stop, but it just doesn't get there, and truly it's the food's fault. For a non-chain, independent, stand-alone, family-owned restaurant, I would expect GOOD food. But their scrambled eggs aren't even edible, to me. The vegetables are overcooked, usually cold, not very fresh, and tasteless. Nothing I've ever had here really lived up to even medium expectations, I'm so sad to say. We've been going here for almost a year and love it. Food is always delicious but the coffee is average. Most if not all of the staff is friendly. I think we've only ever had one bad experience with a waitress but we haven't seen her since so they may have taken care of it. Solid breakfast place in downtown Fox Lake near the railroad tracks. Efficient service and good quality ingredients. There is usually a wait on weekend mornings but the line moves pretty quickly. The coffee and the bacon are awesome! My only complaint is the Hollandaise sauce is definitely not prepared from scratch. My guess is they use the powder. read more

All the other reviews are accurate, this place is really good! We vacationed in Fox Lake for a week, had breakfast or lunch at the Whistle Stop 5 days out of 7! The kids loved their many variations of French Toast, waffles, etc - and as a "sampler" of all my kids' food (hey, who's payin' ;) EXCELLENT stuff. I agree with Diane C. that my Eggs Benedict could have been a bit better... but the hash browns, service and strong coffee were hits with our team. As were any melt sandwich. My wife and were visiting the area and needed to grab something to eat. Checking the GPS we saw Whistle Stop and decided it would fit the bill. We were greeted when we walked in as though we were old friends that had just meet. Our server Dee-Dee treated us with a friendly smile, she too seemed like a new old friend. After receiving out food - hamburger for me and a BLT for my wife, we consumed some of the best diner food we had in a long time. Dee-Dee stopped by to make sure we were happy with our food, She really seemed to enjoy working there and passed along our compliments to the cook.
