I have reviewed whistle stop last year and my rating does not change. I gave it 3 stars because the ice cream is not bad but could be improved and as well as the service could also be improved. The Oreo is fine however it is too thick and barely has enough Oreos. The cookie dough flavor is the same criteria as well as it is too thick and there is not enough cookie dough pieces. In addition, when you order the ice cream you don't get that much because they avoided packing it and avoided filling it near the wall of the cup so you are practically getting ripped off. read more

Really 0 stars because they claimed to be open "daily 11-5" at the Depot location and were not. No signage or info on the website. Just nothing. We planned our whole bike ride around a stop at the Whistle Stop for ice cream! We had been planning it out for days and Wednesday when we finally made it in, THERE WAS NO ICE CREAM!! The trains that were so enchanting are gone, replaced by a big screen TV as a conversation killer, the ice cream doesn't taste like they just made it, the servings are small, the prices jacked up, the big cooler in the seating area so noisy you can't hear yourself think, the magnetic board with the flavors is replaced with a screen, and some of the old flavors are no more. We went there regularly for so many years with our kids and grandkids, but the current owners have ruined it for us. I hear they bought another shop in Mashpee Commons. The ice cream was great! It was thick, creamy and they gave you a good size amount. However, (I apologize for a lack of better words) the big older looking woman with darker pink hair was impatient and was giving me a foul attitude. Once she finished rushing my father through his order, and I began with mine she cut me off before I could finish my sentence "with what size?" with attitude. I politely told her I would've told her my size if she'd let me finish getting the words "two scoops out" after waffle cone. The same pink haired, big woman then proceeded to make four other people's order behind mine and then she gave me a hot cone which melted my ice cream and turned the cone into mush (fyi, I watched this other girl make a waffle cone and let it cool.. the big woman purposely chose to do that). I couldn't finish it because it was so gross. It's not packed like a god damn Starbucks at 7am, you can chill out. Cute little ice cream shop with a train that goes around the shop. They do not accept credit cards. The staff were not friendly - bordering on rude. The ice cream was really good and they had a good selection of sugar free for those that need it. They have lots of special offerings, sundaes and floats. Their ice cream IS very good, not as crowded as "other" place in town...which I DO love too however I will say, ice cream is not as CREAMY. (Pros and cons on that) I did have an experience of not getting the correct change (I should have counted as it was significant) however the manager was very gracious and reimbursed me what was owed a couple of days later. Wanda and Don bought this shop last year and spent the winter renovating its interior. They are so enthusiastic and so fun....and their ice cream is amazing!!! Oh, do not underestimate the power of local ice cream. Take a hike, Cold Stone. No one asked you to reinvent the wheel! Sometimes we all just need a scoop, a spoon, and a place to sit. And this is the place to do it in this part of the world. I don't know if it's homemade, or locally made, but it's unique, for sure. A little magnet board with all the available flavors, a little train that goes all around the inside of the seating area - impossible not to take your eyes off of, even as an adult. Now it is a Monday before memorial day and we were the only people in there but the ice cream is really good and the girl running things was nice quick pleasant, take your pick of Good attributes. Death by chocolate earns it name, chocolate ice cream fudge swirls chocolate chunks and what tasted like jimmies. I ordered two scoops of strawberry ice cream in a sugar cone but instead they gave me three scoops in a cup. Another person in our party ordered black raspberry in a cone but they put it in a cup. What has happened to this place? I've been coming every summer for over 20 years and their basic competence seem to be getting worse and worse. I have finally decided to post due to 4 poor encounters in just the 2018 season. Most recently, I ordered a $7 treat + small (3.95) + kiddie ($3.10)... Should have been about $15... I was charged $20. I corrected and reminded them of my order and they told me it was correct. Is this how we make money? Scam the regulars? The line was long, so I wasn't going to hold it up and argue with the teen workers (by the way, I've only seen an adult behind the counter ONCE this summer). Furthermore, the $7 treat I ordered was supposed to be an ice cream with a chocolate chip cookie... I was given half a scoop of ice cream (for $7?!) with an oatmeal raisin cookie - what a disappointment! As I said, the line was long so I didn't go back in (but why was this such a difficult order to complete in the first place?). It just seems the shop doesn't CARE about the quality anymore. As if they take advantage of being the only ice cream in the neighborhood so they lower the bar for themselve...? Idk, but the past 2 summers my family has consistently returned from the shop with various complaints. read more

Do they just not care anymore? The workers now are incompetent. They don't know what they have, where things are located, what a food allergy is or how much items cost. I know the woman who runs the place intends to hire college-bound "good" kids, but the last several kids I've seen working here are entitled and lack customer service in a big way. Ive seen an adult here ONCE in the last two years. I'm not even going to begin to touch upon the downward spiral of the ice cream quality... I've been in MoBeach my whole life; and walking down to the Whistle Stop was always the highlight of special dinners with family. Needless to say, I now have ice cream in my freezer. Delicious ice cream! We stay at a family house in Navajo, so this place is a frequent stop. A small sundae is enough for me, but they can make huge special sundaes...we ordered a coal car once and it was so big that kids left their tables to come stare at our dessert! I've loved the Whistle Stop for years and years. My grandparents used to live in Bourne, and we lived with them for 6 months when I was 4. The Whistle Stop was a favorite of mine, and a favorite of my Papou (Greek for "grandpa"). My Papou died recently, and after the military ceremony at the cemetery, all 43 of us made a pilgrimage to the Whistle Stop. The staff was absolutely remarkable. You'd think they took orders for parties over 40 people all the time! Afterwards, one of them came around and made sure that all of us had gotten the right cones. And the flavor of the ice cream? As creamy and flavorful as ever! The Whistle Stop is a must for any trip to the Cape. read more

I have been coming here for years and the ice cream is not bad but was here July 3 2017 and the management of the place was abysmal. There were three people working the counter and it was incredibly slow. One person would have to stop to get bulk ice cream from the back so the line moved at a snail place. They were out of most flavors but you had to wait in line for a half hour to know that. The yogurt I had was gritty texture. Not great. The actual ice cream was not bad and the waffle cones are freshly made and quite good. If there is no line I say you should go in. Not sure who manages this place but they need to rethink how they train staff and run things. read more

My first trip to Cape Cad this summer ended perfectly with an ice cream cone from Whistle Stop. The place had a neighborhood feel even though it was sort of dominated by the gas station attached to it. They had a good variety of flavors, and you could tell the place was a step above when you notice the mint ice cream isn't killed by green food coloring. Another friend spent summers in the area and said many of the specials were around back when she was a kid. Nice to see that consistency from a local business. read more

My boyfriends grandparents live right down the street from Whistle Stop Ice Cream Shop on Toby's Island. We frequent this cute little place often after meals. The ice creams are all homemade by the family who owns the shop. Sometimes that means that the flavor you've been dying to come scoop up is not available. Extremely disappointed. I recently posted about how much I love whistle stop, but I recently had an extremely unpleasant visit over the weekend. The girl who was taking our orders was incredibly rude. She was short with everyone in my group, and she even rolled her eyes at us several times! She continued to slam the freezer covers down and roll her eyes with every order, and eventually went to the back and the other girl working had to finish our order! I even asked the new girl why the other one was so upset! I have never had any problems with the service from whistle stop, and their ice cream is the best around, so i hope that this unsettling customer service doesn't ruin it for others! read more

The place is owned by a nice family and the ice cream is made fresh by hand. I personally love the chocolate chip cookie dough. Its so nice to walk in when they are making a fresh batch of waffle cones and the place smells fantastic.
