I've been getting a frappe here for the past five years and yesterday was the first time I was disappointed. Let's hope it was due to operator error and not a new SOP (standard operating procedure.) The problem: it was too watery, or in other words milk dominated and there was insufficient ice cream in the mixture. A frappe should be thick, and difficult to draw up by a straw. Obsessed w/ their Death by Chocolate sundae. It's chocolate madness ice cream (chocolate w/ chocolate chunks and fudge swirl, they must make it themselves) with hot fudge, Oreos, whipped cream, and sprinkles. TBH the kicker for me was the Oreos were chocolate Oreos! Sooo yummy (but also quitteeee large! There's nothing like ice cream on the Cape and this place does it right! I visited on a Saturday night and the place was busy, with a pretty long line, but it moved quickly. The line forms outside and there are plenty of picnic benches, but there didn't seem to be an indoor area. There's also plenty of parking available, so that wasn't an issue. This place had very nostalgic vibes, with a list of all the flavors on the exterior of the building. Lots of the flavors came in funky colors, which is always fun. My only critique would be that there weren't many chunks mixed into the ice cream for some of the cookie-based flavors, so it would have been nice to have more of that textual element. I love ice cream! So while in town, my family recommended I try Shipwreck. My husband ordered a watermelon and pineapple dolewhip twist, which was delicious. I ordered a scoop of banana and a scoop of chocolate chip...not delicious. Not sure what went wrong, but the banana ice cream didn't taste like anything. The chocolate chip was ok until I started tasting mint -- yuck. So I gave my cone to my husband to finish (he can't turn down ice cream) and after one taste he threw it away. This place is fantastic! The have like 30+ flavors of all sorts, including ones that seem specific to here. I got a regular size (read: huge by Cambridge/Boston standards) with a scoop of strawberry shortcake and a scoop of butter crunch (vanilla with butterscotch pieces). The TLDR is...delicious! Both were so refreshing and also pleasant flavors for a summer day. This is such a fun find. After dinner, we saw a long line and a sign that said ice cream, so we made a quick right and stood in line. They have so many flavors. I had the cherry chocolate truffles and the watermelon sherbert. The watermelon was creamy, soft, light, and refreshing. It was the perfect summer treat. Despite being cash only - it's worth the short drive to the ATM and back! The Shipwreck is a magical place that delves out some of the best ice cream in the region. People will try to find minute things to complain about such as: the wait time, or that it is cash-only, or try a super experimental flavor to give a bad rating to this regional gem. I say let them try to drive anyone away with these fallacies because this is the only place I'll get ice cream from in the area despite the wait times and cash-only policy. You have plenty of time to browse the massive choices that change continually throughout the weeks, months, and year. While there are staples to the menu there are also some experimental flavors that sound "interesting" to be kind... but I'm more of a traditional, purist when it comes to the world of ice cream. That said, there are also opportunities to taste up to 2 flavors before making a decision which is nice because it can get overwhelming quickly as you approach the window. The choices are pretty standard - the variety of cones, cups, and sundae/special treats all fueled by the creamy dreams that the owners churn for their loyal fans. This is not your light/diet, soft serve, sugar-free ice cream (well, they do offer lower sugar versions of 2ish flavors). This is racing fuel, full-throttle, flavor-town-bomb that hits all the right notes without being overpowering in the richness and leaving you gasping for water when you are done. The flavors and textures push the envelope or toe the line to the point of being too much without actually crossing over into the realm of excessive. Too much coffee added? Nope. Too little oreo or cookie dough? Nah. Too strong of a salty or caramel base? Negative. The deft hand used to balance the added flavors to the base is something that most people overlook in ice cream, where the current trends of "more is better" instead of realizing "more is just... more." If there is too much added to the mixture it drowns or mutes the high quality base that is being used which at this establishment would be a disservice to the end product. I don't think you can particularly go wrong with anything you would order here, but let me give some advice when picking: 1 - If you don't like licorice (or a certain flavor), don't order it and then say you don't like it 2 - Go basic the first time around; 1 or 2 scoops in a cup (if you're low-er carb...) or in a cone of your choice 3 - If you do 2 different flavors try to choose complimentary flavors. On the warm evening we visited the intersection of the two flavors became a salty-caramel-coffee dream that I have no regrets about. However, if you are doing mint-cookie (oreo) and purple monster (no idea what that actually is) you may have a less than ideal experience through those transition bites. Now let's talk about the seating space... which is all outside :P The area is rustic and feels a bit divey, but that's part of the allure. People seem to really enjoy the fact that you can sit around a bunch of makeshift tables and visit with the rabbits or turtles that are kept in the surrounding cages. There is also a lot of green space to spread out on while you and your group gorge yourself on the more than reasonably priced frozen treats that were just procured. At the end of the day, I speak with two voices: 1 - My money 2 - My reviews The Shipwreck gets both of them and will continue as we vacation out toward the cape throughout the year. It's worth the drive, the "hassle" of waiting or needing cash, and perhaps not eating your treat in air conditioning like I used to growing up. I'm not sure how it has less than 5 stars across the board, but it's okay if it stays a little under the radar in my opinion ;) read more

Spent the day exploring Cape Cod and decided to find some ice cream on the way home. This was conveniently located on our way home. The ice cream is creamy and delicious. Hubby got the vanilla with their homemade hot fudge, and he liked it. I def enjoyed the chocolate raspberry truffle. The salty caramel was just ok, and the chocolate pretzel that was in it was stale tasting. We ordered the Boardwalk Mud/Cookies and Cream with hot fudge and whipped cream, a small Raspberry Sorbet and a Lemon Sorbet. All were amazing!! The young lady says "can i put the cone in a cup, it's realy soft" hmmm if they just opened how can the icecream be soft? There are signs all over the place stating "CASH ONLY". The stupidity here is MIND-BLOWING. EVERY study of its kind emphatically proves that accepting credit cards INCREASES profits. The fact that the owner of Shipwreck does not understand this is frustrating to say the least. Maybe if he spent less time with his stupid turtles and more time reading a business book he might realize he's LOSING MONEY!!!!
