We went for ice cream, but was surprised to see a few other food dishes. The patio is in need of a major renovation. Too many weeds, unkept area where patrons sit. This could be a very nice area , but instead it is an eye sore. If you do read this Whistle Stop owners. Do something about this outside patio area. Honestly, I can't believe this place is still in business. We just went after getting pizza and stood in there for a few minutes before waking out because no one came out to serve us. It also smelled weird, like an old musty building. I almost concluded this place was no longer in existence: the only clue is a flag. When I gave up and wandered back to my car I saw the flag from a revealing angle. I was glad I did! Whistle Stop is trying to figure out what they are. The wind banner outside says "ice cream" but they also have a portion of the interior dedicated to some other sort of food from another business. The menu/specials are written on white boards. The ice cream flavor board was half wiped away. They offer a few flavors, but 3 were "out" when we visited. There's a few tables inside and a bench outside for patrons. Yes, they give out pup cups! The saving grace for this place is the gentleman behind the register, Micah. He was friendly and charming and offered us samples of flavors we wanted to try! I'm not sure what Whistler Stop is trying to be or used to be. They started out great, but unfortunately, cannot handle the volume that comes along with the prime location next to Howard Park. While it appears they have tried to make improvements to the interior, it's just not working. It's still dark, dingy with a not so pleasant smell. The ice cream is great and they obviously make it in small batches, but they simply cannot keep up with the volume of customers. It's only April and on a warm Saturday night, the line was out the door. There were only 10 people in front of us yet it took over a half an hour (and they were out of most items which should make the decision-making process go faster!). They had one employee scooping ice cream with apparently only one ice cream scoop in the place so he had to rinse it every time he switched flavors and one other employee ringing up the customers (while wearing the same gloves that he also served food in). The employees were stressed, the customer were stressed which is the opposite of feelings a quaint, ice cream should invoke. read more

Super bad experience. First off the place is impossible to find. No parking. Secondly its disgusting inside the facility. Really dirty . There was like 6 basic flavors to choose from. Fantastic local ice cream shop. Right across from Howard park, my kids couldn't be happier to stop by on our walk home after getting heated up from running around. Nice friendly team inside. Just a single table, but since it was the evening and we were meeting a new friend, we chose to sit there and visit. Two different navigational programs got the location wrong. It is on the opposite side of South St Louis Blvd from the big building for Howell Park, near the corner. Just south of the business is a parking lot and further down is street parking. There weren't a wide variety of ice cream flavors, but what they had was very interesting. Tasting was allowed before we each chose a flavor. There weren't many ice cream shops to be found between Elkhart and South Bend. Glad we chose this place. read more
