Atmosphere and service were top notch. There were 4 of us for dinner.The bread and the salads were very good. My hubby ordered the prime rib sandwich and he said it had no flavor. I had the butter chicken and mine was very good, the baked potato would have been if it had not been oversalted on the outside. Our friend ordered the ribeye @ $54 and he said it had no flavor but that his potato was also oversalted. Our other friend had the coconut prawns with tots and she was pleased with what she had. The service was excellent and having a table by the window and watching the river can't be beat. For the price of the meal you expect excellence on everything. Amazing views and delicious food! We had dinner tonight after a flash tattoo event and ate in the lounge area. The staff was friendly even though there was an unusual rush of customers. The bar dining room is cozy and also hunting lodge style with trophy game displayed on the walls. They have an extensive gift shop that includes souvenirs and items such as clothing. We sat at the bar, where our server Stevie served up the most incredible Bloody Mary which included maple bacon, jalapeno, pearl onion, pickled asparagus, olive, and lemon & lime. Who needs an appetizer after that? We split a She was also very attentive to our needs as well as to others sitting at the bar. This place has been operating since 1957, and by all appearances has grown continuously since. There's nothing else around here for fifty miles, so be sure to stop in when passing by, and I'd also venture that this place is worth driving that fifty miles if it fits in with your destination route, and a must-do if you're visiting Mt. The scenery about this place is just extraordinary! As you walk in, you're taking in the beautiful sight of mountains covered in trees along with the perfect view of the ever flowing river in the background. How a Simple Lunch Date Turned into the Chipmunk Chronicles It all started as a casual Corvette cruise for lunch. My wife--who also happens to be my best friend in the world--and I decided to take a scenic drive over the pass to Whistlin' Jack's. The plan? Eat great food, admire the view, drive home like responsible adults. But then, as we were soaking in the beauty of the river, we had a thought--nay, an epiphany! Why not stay the night? It was a Wednesday, surely something would be open. Turns out, everything was open. This was either the start of a dream getaway or a setup for a horror movie. Excited but comically unprepared, we wandered into the little store, picking up the essentials: tiny toothbrush, toothpaste, firewood, snacks, and, of course, beer--the bare necessities of survival. With our meager supplies, we checked into the Grandview Cottage, feeling like spontaneous adventurers. We lounged by the river, talking and laughing, basking in our impulsive genius. As night fell, we cozied up by the campfire, blissfully unaware that this peaceful evening was about to take a sharp turn into ridiculousness. The Haunted Light Show At some point, I went inside for a snack and the lights went full Pirates of the Caribbean--flickering ominously like ghost lanterns in a haunted mansion. After investigating, we discovered the whole place was experiencing electrical issues. No big deal, just another chapter in our completely unplanned adventure. Enter Gary, the maintenance hero. He stopped by, checked in on us, and vanished back into the night like some kind of electrical guardian angel. He later returned to warn us the lodge was closing early, and we panic-bought more beer, because if civilization was crumbling, at least we'd be prepared. As night deepened, the cottage lights kept pulsating dramatically, like a discount Halloween attraction. Then... boom! Everything went dark. The whole facility lost power. Some might call this an inconvenience; we called it the perfect stargazing opportunity. So there we were: sitting by the fire, listening to the river, marveling at the stars--the perfect Instagram-worthy moment. Then, we ran out of firewood. And as one does, we decided to get in the hot tub, figuring hey, at least the water was still hot. Breaking the Cardinal Rule of Nature Now, let's recap a crucial detail: Leaving an open bag of Doritos in the middle of a pitch-black wilderness cabin with the door wide open is, in hindsight, breaking a cardinal rule of nature--right up there with poking a bear or assuming raccoons respect personal space. It's like sending a handwritten invitation to every forest creature announcing, "Chip party at the Grandview Cottage--BYO tiny paws!" And clearly, our honored guest RSVP'd immediately. An Intruder in the Night Around 12:15 AM, my wife woke me up saying she heard something. I, in my infinite wisdom, assumed paranoia. But then... clink. Clink-clink. The sound of dishes shifting ever so slightly. That was not paranoia. It was an INVASION. Armed with only our phone flashlights, we scoured the room like FBI agents in a procedural drama. And then--the declaration heard around the world: "There's that f&$)er!!" There, perched on a kitchen chair, casually staring at us, sat a tiny Dorito-thieving chipmunk. Now, let's revisit another crucial detail: We had packed nothing. We had gotten in the hot tub. My shorts were drying. I was fully committed to nature. So here I was--in my birthday suit, chasing a fearless rodent who had infiltrated our cottage like a Mission: Impossible operative. After multiple failed escape attempts, my wife devised an obstacle course using chairs to guide our tiny intruder toward freedom. And finally, instead of running straight out the window, he ran directly at us, presumably seeking revenge. We screamed like children, wielding our cell phone flashlights like lightsabers, until, at last, the chipmunk took his leave, his tiny mission complete. The Aftermath We laughed for an hour, partially out of relief, mostly out of disbelief. I was certain that little guy was going to run up my leg for a different kind of walnut while I was heroically chasing him in the buff. The next morning, we rolled out of bed, showered, threw on the same clothes, and spent breakfast laughing uncontrollably. What started as a simple drive for lunch turned into a legendary survival saga involving power outages, beer hoarding, accidental hot tubbing, and an uninvited chipmunk guest. Would we do it again? For a while they wouldn't let anyone sit in the dining room at lunch where the view is. They made you sit in the bar with a view of the highway. Service was great and food was good too. Cute place out in the mountains! Beautiful setting along the river. There was only a few patrons when we arrived but it filled up fast! It looks like their understaffed sometimes so it can be longer wait times depending on when you come. The food is usually pretty good with good quantity for the price you pay. A few weeks back a group of us stopped in for lunch. Took forever to get a server to come over then it took another long while for drinks. When we tried to order food they said the kitchen was taking food orders, it was about 1:30pm on a sunny Sunday. Gold Creek Saloon down the street was happy to serve its lunch very quickly. The bartender brought us water and soft drinks and told us the kitchen was not taking lunch orders yet because they were still fulfilling breakfast orders. We asked if we could order breakfast but no. She said wait 15 minutes. We ordered at 1. I had the fish and onion rings and it was good: beer batter on the fish but not the onion rings. We all thought the food was good. I liked the looks of the Bloody Mary but was riding a motorcycle and stuck with water. The kitchen just couldn't handle the load. We rented a cabin this week to see what it was like after not being there for maybe 20 years. I would have to say this will be our last time going to Whistlin' Jack's. The woman who checked us in couldn't have been more pleasant and the bartender / server was outstanding. The halibut was terrific. But the restaurant (that has a wonderful view of the river) wasn't open so we ate in their lounge. While the lounge has the same menu as the restaurant, you're paying the same high prices without the view. Our cabin had two bedrooms + hide-a-bed and is supposed to accommodate up to six people. There were four of us. The table where we ate our meals seated four but could be expanded - except there were only four chairs. What would we have done if there were six people? And the living room area where we spent a lot of time visiting with our relatives only had a couch (hide-a-bed). Maybe the owners would consider putting in two single overstuffed chairs so at least five people could sit comfortably. And finally, one of the two bedrooms had no electrical outlets. What would someone do if they needed to plug in a C-PAP machine? This is sub-par for 2025, especially when you're paying approximately $400 per night after you add in the resort fee and taxes. read more

We stopped to eat at the restaurant around 3pm.There were only 3 of us and the restaurant was not busy. We ordered a hamburger and 2 prime rib sandwiches, one with a salad and one with garlic parm fries for my son.. Only special request was no horseradish on my son's prime rib sandwich. We waited for our food for well over an hour. Husband wanted to leave as we still had a long drive home, but I talked him into staying and waiting. Food finally came out and they mistakenly put horseradish on both prime rib sandwiches. Server took one of the sandwiches to be remade, but gave the one with horseradish and fries on the plate to my husband. Tried to have her take the one with fries to remake since thatcwas sons order, but she said my son could eat his fries off my hubby's plate while waiting for the re made sandwhich. My hamburger was very over cooked and dry, as was my husbands prime rib on his sandwhich, but we did not complain. Husband and I were both done with our food before my son got his remade sandwich, which when it finally came out over 30 minutes later, was just some very over cooked prime rib on soggy toast, no cheese or caramelized onions. We advised the server, she said she would bring us a piece of cheese to the table, No thanks. I thought just maybe, they might adjust the check to compensate for this, but nope. Not even a " sorry for the wait, or sorry for the messed up order", nothing. Alot of money spent on very poor quality food. Unfortunately, we will not be back. read more

This was our 2nd time here and I absolutely love the location with the beautiful river views, both inside and outside of the restaurant! We both enjoyed our bougie Grilled Cheese sandwich (love the name!) and the garlic parm fries were ohhhhh sooooo good! No matter the service or quality of food when you put a "service charge " on my bill without telling me and then when I ask what it's for you say we don't ask for any tips. .. and the receipt asks for a tip......well I won't be back. In my book I tip according to the type of service and the QUALITY of that service. And yes I tip less for take out than a great waitress who takes care of my family for a couple of hours. read more

These guys ripped us off! Booked an RV site that was touted as being able to accommodate the size of our RV. When we got there, they charged us the full price. When we went to the RV site, it clearly wouldn't accommodate our RV. When we went to go find another RV site, they told us we violated their cancellation policy! Spent our 22nd anniversary trip here and it did not disappoint. I was a little Leary due to some negative reviews but I did not find anything to complain about. We spent a night at the inn and had two wonderful meals at the restaurant there. The room was clean and had a great view of the river. Very comfy! The restaurant served wonderful food and the staff was so nice and professional. We are generally picky about our experiences and how we spend our time and money and this place did not disappoint. We had two meals here, both were excellent! Filet mignon, halibut, grilled shrimp with avocado salad and a beef dip. The menu has variety and the beer and wine we had added to a great meal experience. Service was friendly, takes a while to cook fresh food so a slight wait. You can get a table that looks out on the river. We stayed on the cottage Grandview, so had lots of time to sit out on our patio and watch the water flow by. The spacious cottage was comfortable and clean, good lighting. The location in a grove of trees along the river was perfect for relaxing. My husband and I spent a charming 2 nights/3 days at this rustic lodge. Improvements are in the works for every part of the property since it fell into disrepair over the last few years. The new owners seem to really care about bringing the old gal back to a properly functioning get away. The mattresses and hot tubs are all brand new. Espressos, available in the store, are delicious. The food comes in ridiculously large portions. But after a day of hiking or biking, you better believe you'll be happy to see that enormous plate of yummy food. The wine by the glass list is small but well chosen and the cocktails are very tasty. Yes, there's still a ways to go before the lodge is back to - or even better than - it's past glory days. But the staff are working hard to make sure everyone is comfortable and well taken care of. If you're in a hurry, this isn't the place for you. Whistlin' Jack's is all about letting the experience sink in. So take some time for the Outpost and Lodge to work it's subtle magic. You'll be well rewarded for your patience. read more

We decided to renew an old family Mother's Day tradition of celebrating at Whistlin' Jacks. We made reservations for 12pm, and showed up promptly. We got a nice window seat. Our waitress was very cordial, but informed us it would be some time, (45 min) to get our order. 1:15 minutes later we got our appetizer, followed immediately by our meal. My wife and I had both ordered the Mother's Day special "Eggs Benedict". Not good! We were happy with the wait staff, but the kitchen is a disaster. Absolutely the worst experience my wife and I have ever had at a restaurant. And we are in our late 60s so have been to MANY restaurants. We walked in and we're seated right away as there were plenty of open tables. A few minutes later we placed our order and that's when things went downhill. After about an hour we finally asked the waitress when we could expect to eat. She rudely replied that there were many orders in front of us, indicating that the cook hadn't even started on our order, and walked away. We told her that in that case we should probably just pay for my coffee and just leave. Her reply was "Fine". We got up and walked to the cashier. Paid for my coffee and left. This place on the way home from Mount Rainier national Park is a fun stop to pop in for some lunch or a beer or both. You can see why it's very popular with dual sport off-road bikers and street bikes because it's the first spot as you head out of the national park and it's been there forever and it's charming and kind of fun. On the one side is the dining room and on the other side is the bar and you can get any of the items in the kitchen on either side. I had a cougar burger which is ham and bacon lettuce tomato onion and your choice of cheese. The burger was overcooked and not that great but there was so much other fun stuff on there it was still a decent burger. Oh it comes with a nice stabbed into it and three onion rings on top. I opted as my side to upgrade for four more dollars to the garlic parmesan fries and they were spectacular. That's how this review went from three stars to four stars. The place can be very busy so don't expect anything too fast from the kitchen. I'm not saying they're slow I'm just saying they're busy and probably understaffed like everyone else. I really wanted to like this place but it was just not a great experience at all.. Some pros - excellent ice cream over at the Outpost and a nice gift shop stocked with Whistlin' Jack's products (we bought the huckleberry scone mix, licorice, and marmalade). We stayed at a campsite nearby and it was nice to have the Outpost down the street for a few grocery needs throughout the weekend. We tried to stop in one night for dinner but were turned away because the kitchen was backed up and they weren't seating any new tables (no problem). Came back the next morning for breakfast and it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've sat through recently. My husband is allergic to eggs and he asked for the American breakfast plate, swapping avocado for the 2 eggs. He was told that was not possible and it would be $2 extra for avocado. Irritating, considering the meals are all spendy to begin with. He ended up not eating at all, since most items on the breakfast menu included eggs (no oatmeal or fruit options). We waited about 45 minutes before breakfast finally came out, and I wouldn't have minded the long wait if the server would have offered a coffee refill during that time, but that unfortunately never came. The 2 servers were bouncing around like ping pong balls trying to help everyone. As we waited, I saw a customer walk through the dining room to access the bathrooms by the bar, but the hostess/front desk person forced him to stop and unkindly told him he needed to turn and use the other bathrooms on the far side of the dining room instead. He looked confused as to why this was a problem (as did I). I watched another customer return to the dining room from the bathroom and he informed the hostess/front desk person that the paper towel dispenser was not working. She was quite unfriendly again and said "well it's not an automatic dispenser.. did you actually push on the right spot to get it to work?" Wow. After breakfast, we paid with our server and I was left with a $10 bill that I needed exchanged for 2 fives instead, but the server had quickly walked away so I went to the hostess/front desk person to ask if she could make change. Customer service not being her "thing", she rolled her eyes and said she would check the cash register, but they didn't have the right bills available. She begrudgingly took my $10, put it in the bill sleeve, and took it back to the kitchen to locate my server and break the bill. I went back to our table to wait... and wait... and wait... and wait, before the server finally took notice of me and asked if I was still waiting on something?? After another 5 or 10 confused minutes trying to track down the bill sleeve, she came back and was finally able to make the change I needed. She said the hostess/front desk person took it back to the kitchen, set it down, and didn't say anything to anyone about it. WOW. Breakfast was fine and the servers did their best during a busy holiday weekend, but we won't be returning to dine at Whistlin' Jack's. We are sad. We checked the website for the hours of operation. Never occurred to us to check recent reviews. This had been a special & favorite place of our family for many years, once we sold our property up here 10 years ago we haven't visited much. We arrived to an empty parking lot. That should have been our first clue... then there was the empty "gift shop" . Come to find out they are under new management and the DINING ROOM IS CLOSED until April. We were offered lounge seating. Okay.... then we find out THEY HAVE NO LIQUOR LICENSE. We should have just left but with past great experiences & fond memories clouding our judgement we stayed. The menu is sooooo sad, there are so many misspellings. We had passed the salad bar outside the lounge, it was dried out & crusty looking, so was avoided. Food was subpar bar food at 4 star restaurant prices. Folks, at least consider seating guests in the dining room. The view is free and the ambiance much different than sitting in a bar. Remove the empty merchandise racks. Lower your prices to reflect the substantial change in quality. You're doing yourselves no favors. Just like the food prices the Motel & cabins are priced out of sync with their quality. You have coasted on past glory days for too long, either bring back the quality or accept that you are now just a run down "no tell" motel & crappy diner.
