The office staffer, Connie, was amazingly nice. She gave me a "National Park Pass" discount of $10 so my room was under $70. Price is nice, but the room was truly "historic" AND very clean. Queen bed with lots of room to walk around it and a large bathroom. Plus the Wifi was lightening fast. I download all my photos from the Grand Canyon without so much as a slow down. I'd like to come stay here as a weekend destination get away; too bad its 1400 miles from my home.

I stayed here in August 2019, which judging by past reviews, was shortly after the change in ownership. Check-in was alright and I was directed to a room in the front of the property. When I pulled up to my room, a staff member doing work on the came up to me and asked for my room key so he could turn on the AC and make sure the room was ready...okay. This might just be my New York paranoia talking, but I gave the room a thorough inspection when I got inside. The room was a 50s motel room, which was about what I expected. Furniture was dated, but it was clean. The internet password was not posted prominently and required me to read the fine print in the guide. Most hotels post the wifi password prominently and don't expect you to spend 15 minutes looking all over the room for it. Once I got that settled, the room was generally quiet and comfortable. The next morning, renovation work was going on pretty early in the morning. Thankfully, I wanted an early start anyway, so I wasn't bothered. This property worked for the night, but I'm not sure I'd return. Independent motels are always a gamble and, unfortunately, this one didn't live up to the past reviews.

We have a full kitchen which we use for most of our meals - a full-size refrigerator, a full-size stove with a large oven, a microwave, and a coffee maker. The sitting room is large. Management is friendly and attentive. The Inn is on the main street but in a very small town--NO TRAFFIC NOISE. We have not heard a car horn or siren all week. Needed services are within walking distance. With the big box stores, Cortez is less than 15 minutes away.

Our room had a queen bed that was so comfortable we slept great. There are multiple bathrooms on the floor some private with shower, private with only a toilet, or shared with toilets and showers. It's also a great location where we could walk to get food in downtown. We recommend Columbine Bar and Grill and Fahrenheit Coffee Roasters.

I was on a road trip to hike at Mesa Verde before I made a trip to Moab and Arches. The room was clean, the bed I was in had a brand new mattress and it has a nic retro 1980's old school charm. Most importanly, the room was queit and I was able to do some work. Joy was great and responsive. She even called me to invite me for a fresh pot of coffee. This motel has been in Brian's family for years. Today, Joy and Brian manage the property and are curently in the process of making renovations and upgrades. The Wi-Fi can be slightly spotty and I hope this is one area they can invest in. If you are arriving late in your travels, Joy will work with you and make sure you are taken care of. Joy and Brian really do care about your well being.

One Star - Outrageous Host Behavior, Unprofessional, and Discriminatory…read more I stayed at Outpost Motel on the River in July 2025. After being treated poorly and forced out of our room despite a verbal agreement to extend our stay, I emailed the property to calmly and respectfully explain the issue and offer a solution. I was polite, reasonable, and offered the property a chance to resolve the situation. In response, I was sent one of the most hostile, abusive, and unprofessional emails I have ever seen. I've attached her response in full so you can read her exact words. She called me a "dumb fuck" and told me to "fuck off," all while claiming to run a "family joint." I'm not sure what kind of family she's referring to, but I wouldn't want mine anywhere near that environment. I am a person in recovery with nearly seven years of sobriety. Her false accusations and dehumanizing language were deeply retraumatizing, stigmatizing, and harmful--and this kind of treatment is dangerous for anyone, especially those in recovery. I've also included time-stamped photos of the room as we left it: clean, undamaged, and not remotely what she falsely described. I've reported her conduct to Booking.com and submitted all supporting documentation. This is not just a case of bad customer service. It's a case of blatant hostility, discrimination, and verbal abuse. I'm sharing this review to protect future travelers--especially those in recovery or anyone who expects basic human decency.

The were fully book when we wanted to extend our stay. John called me to let me know they had a cancellation. so we immediately booked for 2 more nights! there is a beautiful deck overlooking the river. Their housekeeper Kristina was so sweet! We plan to come back next summer or this Christmas. you won't go wrong staying here!!
