    Classic Hamburger

While the idea of lunch in Lower Town Harper's Ferry sounds wonderful, there are the issues in parking, walking hills, and long lines of tourists to contend with. We decided to have a solid lunch at White Horse Tavern then afterwards get on with our tourism. The restaurant opens at noon, has a fairly varied menu, has attentive young waitstaff and offers ample parking. (Note it is located in the Clarion Hotel a short drive from the NHP parking.) The ambiance is dark and tavern-like but once you are fueled up you will be outdoors in Harper's Ferry for the rest of the day. Most importantly, the food was solid. The lettuce of the Southwest chicken salad was extremely fresh. The classic hamburger and the turkey sandwich on pretzel roll were large and filling. Shoutout to Bristol who took good care of our table.

This was next to our hotel, and since we like to try local beers, we though "Why not?" I'm sure glad we went in!! Forst off, cheers to Kaley (I hope I spelled her name correctly) who was awesome!!! Excellent server with a great personality. She made us feel very welcomed! They had a good selection of local draft beers. The hamburgers were really good, too! Would definitely recommend stopping here.

Sirloin w/ a lump crab cream sauce, garlic mushrooms, and a baked potato

Cute little tavern attached to the hotel I'm staying at. Ordered a Harper's Ferry Sunrise (just ok), but the food was delicious. Got the lump crab steak in a cream sauce with a baked potato and garlic mushrooms. The star of the show was the garlic mushrooms and the lump crab cream sauce. Both were amazing! The waiter was fast, attentive, and friendly. What a gem of a spot.

If you're looking for a place that is loud, with well intentioned but unskilled teenage servers serving hit or miss food at top dollar- this is exactly the place for you. If you want an environment that cares more about selling large quantities of alcohol to already intoxicated people, you've also found the place. The prime rib couldn't have been worse if they tried. It tasted like it had been bathed in liquid smoke and salt water. The meat was over cooked for the medium I ordered and it had the consistency of a cheap sirloin that can only be achieved when you don't take the time to cook it correctly. The au jus was too salty and Smokey to use- literally like a 50/50 mix liquid smoke and saltwater. The baked potato was ok on the inside but the skin and about 1/2" of the outer portions were tough as shoe leather. I don't know how that's even possible. Drink refills were few and far between. The servers are all great kids from the local high school who try hard, but the only reason they got a tip was because they are local kids that my kids know- not because the service was great. Let's talk about the noise for a minute. That place has tables crammed into every inch of that musky smelling old home. When you add in drink servers who are motivated by money and enabled by a lack of leadership- you get a bunch of loud drunks. Throw in live music and you're guaranteed to have a place so loud you can't hear anyone at your table trying to talk. The banana pudding used to be our favorite so we ordered two to go, we ended up throwing one away and the other was left half eaten. It tastes like store bought pudding with cheap whipped topping- nothing else. We have a three strikes rule and this was strike #3, definitely not coming back here. If you want quality food for the masses, Andy's down the street has great pizza for a fraction of the price of this place. Daughter Thai across the street is about the same price point as 1836, but offers consistent quality in their food with an atmosphere perfect for a family dinner. If you're looking for overpriced bar food and a place that doesn't care how many drinks you've had- I think this is the perfect place for you and your fraternity brothers. The buffalo cauliflower appetizer is good and their schnitzel platter is great, just avoid the steaks, prime rib, drinks that need refills, anything with fries and you're fine. This is our third attempt in three years and we are done. Which is sad because there aren't many options in town. Deep breath in...Unless you count the time when they closed for the night unexpectedly and we ordered them via their website because they forgot to turn off their system so they charged us and it took an hour before their system realized nothing was happening and we had to wait almost a week for them to refund the money but the owner emailed it was coming and didn't apologize or explain why they left their orders on when they closed because he really didn't seem to care about it....inhales deeply to catch breath...then this was trip #4. Either way, this place is scratched off the list unless we are looking for a bar with loose moral standards and not food.

The choices were: outside, the sports bar, or the dining room. We chose the dining room. A large group of people was sitting at a table. We were given a booth by the window and right by the server's station. Looking over the menu at home, we both decided that we would get a bacon cheeseburger. The entrees seemed, to us, to be too filling. The bacon cheeseburger consists of: "100% angus burger, apple-wood smoked bacon, vermont white cheddar, canadian cheddar, sliced tomato, and crispy leaf lettuce". We both ordered it cooked medium. The dish comes with fries. To drink, I had ginger ale while my husband had a Heineken 00. Our server was friendly and efficient. He made a mistake, bringing my husband a Coke instead of the beer. My husband corrected him. He apologized and retrieved the correct drink. The burger was dry and overcooked. It was more on the medium well side. In one way, I didn't mind that as I didn't end up with greasy hands or a burger that falls apart. The bacon and the cheese provided some relief from the dryness. The fries came out hot, which we appreciated. All in all, it was an OK experience; we would consider going again sometime.

When they arrived they seemed oddly small for what you would expect, more so trimmings than "Steak Tips." For dinner I was between a couple of items, but I rushed myself to order the Steak and Cheese. When it arrived it appeared that I received the previously mentioned "steak tips" sandwiched between bread, with some condiments and cheese. Maybe I should have read the description a bit more carefully or maybe I expected something more typical of a Steak and Cheese. I did want to order the steak tacos after both, just to see if they were the same. Someone please let me know.
