The White Oak Bayou Trail has become one of my favorite places to ride, run, or just move through the city without the noise of traffic. I usually stick to the lower portion between downtown and 20th Street, and even though that's only a small piece of the full trail, it always delivers. The path is smooth and wide, and for the most part, you can travel for miles with barely any street crossings. It's one of the few places in Houston where you can feel totally connected but still completely removed. Starting near downtown, you pass through Buffalo Bayou Park, which is always buzzing with activity. You can catch some amazing skyline views here before heading north alongside the bayou. From there, the trail slips through a quieter stretch of green space--Stude Park--with plenty of trees and open lawn. A little farther up, you roll into White Oak Park, where the trail feels tucked away and shaded, perfect for an early morning ride. By the time you reach the 20th Street area, it starts to open up again, with more residential views and the edge of the Heights nearby. Right now, there's a bridge out near Stude Park--just past the MKT trail connection--so to stay on White Oak you'll need to detour briefly along the Heights Hike and Bike Trail. It's not a major hassle, just a quick diversion around the closure, but something to keep in mind if you're planning a longer outing. Even though I haven't gone the full distance yet, I keep telling myself that once the heat breaks and fall rolls in, I'm going to make a day of it. I'd love to bike the whole thing, from downtown all the way north, just to see how far this green ribbon really stretches through the city. Until then, this lower stretch of the trail has become a regular part of my workout schedule. It's clean, calm, and never feels crowded. Whether you're out there to sweat or just clear your head, it's one of the best-kept paths in Houston. read more

White Oak Bayou trail is one of my favorite trails for long, stress-free bike rides. The whole trail is roughly 17 miles long and connects to other bike-friendly paths like Buffalo Bayou Park and the Heights Hike and Bike trail, making it easy to navigate and reach from the surrounding neighborhoods. The path is wide and well maintained without bumps or holes, and it allows visitors to travel their desired distance without the inconvenience of traffic lights or stops at car intersections. While the path is used by a number of bikers, leisure riders, as well as more high performance athletes, it's also a great path to run or walk. The path has a number of signs to help mark significant street intersections so that you don't miss your turn. One of my favorite sections of the trail is the straightaway right near UHD - the downtown views are spectacular! Hallelujah, the burned bridge from the trail off I-10 to the Greater Heights area has been resurrected! It only took about 2 years. From my place, I can take a short walk underneath the highway to Black Swan Yoga, Benny Thunders, and Coltivare. When you cross White Oak, it will lead you to a neighborhood. Take a left, and you'll be around 7th street to get to the large playground on Heights Blvd. Go to Heights Mercantile Farmer's Market (when available) or grab food at Local Foods, Postino's, Cloud 10 Creamery, etc. You can even go shopping at One of a Kind, Kendra Scott, Warby Parker, all the other stores. Cross Yale Street, and you'll get to MKT for more food and shopping. It's family and dog friendly along the paths. Just watch out for cyclists. Some of them go really fast without warning or think they own the shared path and tell you to walk on the grass with or without your dog. There were a lot of people out even though it was hot outside. You'll get a tan...I did. read more

By far one of my favorite trails. If I lived closer I would be here all the time. I'm about 25 mins away so it's definitely a hike to get here but it's very worth it. I have don't this trail about 5 times now and I'll do more. Trail: great views of the city. When the sun is out you can really get some great pics. Great for a quick 1-2 hours. Getting some great cardio here is a great. The trail is wide enough for hikers, walkers, bikers etc without any issue. Lots of great restaurants and coffee shops on the way. Runs into heights Blvd which is great. I am a huge fan of this trail and I 100% suggest you get outdoors and give the trail a try. You will not be disappointed. Parking is tight here so beware. I have always found parking but with very few spots I could see this spot being so busy that you may not be able to park. This park as made it into my rotation. I'll be back soon. read more

This is the quintessential trail if you want a view of Houston. The trail is at TC jester Blvd where you can go up north along 290 or towards south east into the Greater Heights and eventually the Theater District. There's a lot of access to local businesses and shops so you could run errands on your bike/skateboard just by going on this trail itself. It passes through a lot of parks, bridges, neighborhoods, and playgrounds so there's a lot scenery to take in. But that's why you go on this path right? NOTE: Be careful as they've closed part of the trail at the Greater Heights for maintenance/upkeep. This was back in end of October 2020 so hopefully as I'm typing this they have opened it up. read more

With the gyms being closed during the Corona lockdowns, I've been riding my bike a lot more and really enjoying the various trails. If you're going to go here, you should realize just how big this trail is and go on google maps and see where it goes and where it intersects with other trails. If you don't read anything else (and why would you? this is too verbose), LOOK AT THE MAP! You don't want to be walking or riding your bike and come across a fork in the trail and wind up going in the wrong direction because you'll be going for miles before you can get off. Sadly, the naming conventions are not exactly consistent and the trail does seem like a Star Trek series and has an alternate parallel routes that end meeting again so seriously, LOOK AT THE MAP! The shortest way I can describe it is as such: If you're coming to town from TC Jester Park, you will have a decision to make when you intersect the Heights Trail (also known as MKT Trail...seriously what's up with multiple names?) If you go left (east), you'll go through heights area shops, hipster bars, etc. and is quite scenic. If you go south, you'll go along the bayou and it's not very scenic until you'll hit the MKT/Heights trail again in Bayou Green Park. If you want to turn back around and go through the scenic stuff, you can make a left now and it'll bring you through the shops and eventually back to where you came from (insert Kermit Frog meme). At this point, the White Oak Bayou Trail has ended...or has it??? You have to either go north or south on the MKT Trail which WILL eventually end up at White Oaks Bayou Greenway Trail when you're closer to UHD(what did I say about parallel universes??), but the other starting point of the White Oaks Bayou Greenway Trail is in Stude Park. Sooooooo you have to make a choice: Do you want to hop up on the street and go to Stude Park and follow the trail there, or just stay in MKT and go through Spring Street. I say do both depending on the day. Either way, this is going to be a beautiful ride. You'll see the skyline from the north end, you'll go by UHD, and eventually, if you want, the trail turns into the Buffalo Bayou Trail that will take you all the way to Memorial and Shepard and if you don't mind hopping through some streets, all the way to Memorial Park. Essentially, you can start at Memorial Park and go all the way to NW Houston if you want. That's gotta be at least 30 miles. Pro tips: have water and sunscreen. It's brutal once it's warm and there are no real stops. Have a fully charged phone and don't be shy to check GPS. Have a Q-card from metro - just put 5 bucks on it in case you get lost, get a flat, etc. Speaking of flats, inspect your bike, tires, etc. and have a patch kit and/or spare tube. You don't want to be caught with a flat and walk back 20 miles once it's dark. There is a DIY tire service station under UH with a pump and rack and wrenches and things too. They also have it where the Heights trail ends and meets with the west end of the White Oak trail and then there is another one 34th street (near TC Jester Park) but don't rely on those since it's a loooong walk to get there. Also, remember slow traffic stays on right. I know hikers give the evil eye to bikers but I've seen 3 or 4 people just walking side-by-side blocking the way. Having the right of way doesn't mean you impede traffic. For bikes, it's standard practice to ring your bell and say something like "On your left!" . you should also have headlights and tail-lights if you plan on going at night. read more

Go to bike and run trail for the Heights area. All of the trail is paved besides the bit at the north end that goes on dirt. You can easily bike 50+ miles to downtown then transfer to the Buffalo Bayou trail. There are quite a few lights if you go towards the northern portion but all in all, it is a great resource for exercise. There is also a dirt trail for running or dog walking parallel to the paved trail. Obviously the bayou water is pretty disgusting but it is what it is for Houston Since COVID, White Oak has been much more busy with casual pedestrians and kids, which has made it more challenging to navigate. read more

A run with a view! This hike and bike trail spans about 17 miles of public greenspace (according to the city's website). Along the path, you'll come across a few parks, baseball fields, and rec spaces. What I adore most about running this trail are the views, plus the parking, and access to so many local businesses. You can stop along during your workout and grab a healthy bev from Juice Land, a bite to eat, or even a cocktail should you pref that form of hydration. I prefer to park at the baseball field near Mango Beach. I can grab a snocone or a snacky snack. read more

This trail is great for biking or running if u dont like dirt paths. It is fully paved and connects all the way down to eleanor tinsely park which is cool because you can ride it forever. Passes straight through UHD if you start at stude park and head towards downtown. Great views. I rollerbladed about 8 miles and went from Stude to Eleanor Tinsely and back. I didn't head the other way but my guess is it continues for a super long time along the bayou. read more

Love this trail! This trail is worth it just for the section between Tidwell and W Little York: you will seriously feel like you are biking in Germany as you hear the church bells ringing, see no houses in sight, and instead have a lovely view of lush, green hills gently rolling into the creek. To lengthen the trail, when you get to the southern end of the trail at TC Jester and 11th Street, take 11th street east to Dorothy and you can connect to the Heights trail and stop for a refreshing drink at Onion Creek (where you can sit on a patio with fans and not be embarrassed by how sweaty you are). If the pool in TC Jester park makes you want to try your own triathlon (or just use the awesome looking slides to feel like a kid again), come back on Saturdays and Sundays between 1-8pm, the only time the pool is open. read more

Outstanding jogging trail if you are sitting there stuffing your face at Jus' Mac and you realize, hey, maybe I should do something athletic BESIDES raising the fork to my face. Also unlike most other jogging areas, it appears that there is a minimum requisite attractiveness level to use the trail - unless the heat has made me delusional, it is nice to be in that kind of environment to motivate you to keep jogging. TL;DR - stuff face on mac and cheese, then jog it off nearby as you try to obtain "digits" Remember to wear sunscreen. read more

Alright this trail has to be upgraded. Granted, I use the more northern part of this trail than the original part that is in the address listing. The trail goes along the bayou for a good stretch. It's really wide and smooth. Great for both cycling and jogging. read more

How lucky are we to have such an expansive trail network in the near-town area. The trail winds with White Oak Bayou for several miles, giving you an appreciation as to why we are called the Bayou City. Definitely take some time to explore the trail and take in the scenery, especially with the upcoming Spring wildflower bloom - it is just gorgeous around here! read more

Good park and trail. I walked the length from Antoine to main street, on Sept.18, 2020. Also played some disc golf in route. So, it took me 5 plus hours to complete. Great improvement of 911 mile marker signs on trail. Especially, since neighborhoods after Tidwell bridge are low income and gang turf. read more

Love this trail. I've been using it for 3 years now, and it's awesome. I live near TC Jester Park and regularly take this trail downtown on my bike. In fact, I'm about to start commuting to work, now that they've completed a portion of trail which bypasses the Heights. From TC Jester Park, you only have to cross 3 roadways to get to I-10 and Studemont. I think that's an amazing feat for Houston, and I love having the option to combine exercise with my daily commute. Just watch out for fools like Patrick O. It's three lanes wide, which is great for cyclists, who can pass someone and not feel crammed in or like they're running someone off the road. In Spring, there's tons of wildflowers to look at. After it rains, the bayous are amazingly full and river-like. You can regularly see fish hanging out down there, and birds use it as a highway to fly through. If you haven't been, either for biking or running, I highly suggest it. As some ladies have noted, there can be a couple of homeless people hanging around (as with most public parks). Just practice your usual safety measures. Most of these people aren't dangerous, they just had nowhere else to go. That said, as a woman, I probably wouldn't go out at dark without a friend. read more

I like this trail for biking and for jogging. This has been my trail because it's my neighborhood and it's right across the street for me so it's easy access. It's the trail to lead into the heights to endeavor into further exploration. I like that they have inclines because they go under a couple of the main streets to avoid traffic. Part of my bike circuit around Houston. The park has good facilities for sports, swimming and some additional gravel trails for runners. Several bike lanes split off from main trail. The longest paved stretch runs from 11th street to Antoine Dr, about 8 miles. Some Northern stretches feel almost pastoral, a rarity in Houston. Southern half is well lit for night riding. It's pretty easy to make the switch to Heights Bike trail or continue down TC Jester toward Memorial Park. One of the best paved bike trails in Houston. Lose two stars for the construction at 290 and 610 creating a dangerous detour, though I expect that will be corrected read more

Love this outdoor gem!! The trail is mostly concrete, well maintained, perfect for long walks, runs, or biking. You can easily find parking around -- either in designated parking lots or around neighborhoods (depends on where you are). We usually start at TC Jester and 11th and park on the street. We have only made it as far as the TC Jester park (which is a neat spot in itself with a dog park and a pool). Some parts of the trail are busier than others, but still less hectic compared to some of the other parks in the area. read more

Fantastic jogging and cycling trail. The beautiful scenery along this trail keeps me going and makes for an interesting run. The trail is wide in most spots allowing easy passing for cycling, running, or skating. Most of the trail is very open and feels safe. A lot of the trail has night lighting allowing for safe night cycling. The trail is continuously updated and growing. I have heard that there are future plans for there to be 345 miles of interconnected bike trails in the future....really excited about that. read more

I did a 12 mile run along the White Oak Bayou on the TC Jester Trail. This trail was also a nice wide concrete trail with a yellow stripe down the middle of it. Not so many trees (could always wish more more trees), but there was lots of people out an about running, biking walking dogs, even four-wheeling it across the bayou. I ran past several play grounds, a dog park and even a Frisbee golf course. I entered the trail at TC Jester and 11th Street and just parked in the neighborhoods. The trail extends 7.4 miles north along the White Oak Bayou-and I ran nearly all of it (5.6 miles to be exact) this past weekend. I blogged more about my experience too! read more

Nice to walk but watch out for the bikes. They think they own it No you don't. Pedestrians always have right of way.Don't get me wrong some cyclists are nice but some are really pissed off when they scream at you "ON THE LEFT." Would like to see speed bumps their to control the speed as it's only a matter off time before someone is injured. read more

Great biking and joggin trail! From 11th street all the way to 43rd this trail is nice to start at one end and go the distance to the other and return. I love this trail as it is very close to my home. There are many places to stop and take a drink as well as take a bit of a rest if you need to. Nice hills that go under the bridges and keep you out of traffic. Good for a novice biker in that sense read more

I just moved to The Heights off East T.C. Jester and having this biking/running trail across the street from my apartments is amazing!!! I am trying to get into being more active and to be able to come home from work and not have to drive to Memorial Park or Buffalo Bayou Park and just cross the street for my evening walks is amazing. The trail is wide, so you can bike, run, walk and there is enough room to where you don't feel crowded. Its awesome that you can actually take it all the way to downtown by UH-Downtown and connect to Buffalo Bayou Park. This trail was a great development for The Heights and an amazing way to support a healthy living and active lifestyle. read more

I heart this trail. I have used this trail when I was training for my first triathlon. It has a lot of uninterrupted paths for a newbie biker to feel safe and it has a lot more variety then the bike loop in Memorial Park. Also, since it's in my neighborhood, it is pretty accessible for my errand running: grocery stores, post office, and drug stores are all nearby. Also, as a nice little bonus, Cedar Creek is not far from the path. So, it's a nice place to have an after-bike refreshment. read more

Good trail for walking dogs...Cons would be all the bikers with their idiotic "on your left" cooments and stupid bells...not to mention the halogen lights they like to shine in your eyes in the a.m. ....When I first started walkin few months back I would frequently get some idiot ring his bell over and over and have his stupid light in my eyes when I was waliking my dogs on the left...which I usually do since I like to know where the idiots are and so my dogs are not gonna get clipped by someones pedals...After standing my ground and giving the double 1 finger salute a few times they have learned to get out of my way...don't mess w Mr. Zero :) So yeah good trail if you can ignore all the yuppie heards and the constant "Good Morning" from every idiot you pass...Some Asbergers syndrom havin dude yelled Good Morning at me after I did not respond to his first good morning...I of course told him to F Off in my best Irish Accent ....Happy trails to you :0 read more

Amazing trail. Great for running, biking, and brisk walking. You could probably rollerblade it too. Generally not to crowded till you get on the east side of the heights near when it runs parallel with 6th. I wish they would put in an asphalt line for the runners like buffalo bayou - that concrete will tears your knees up. I would pay extra taxes for asphalt. read more

I have walked and run on this path for a few years without any problem (early in the morning, during the day, and in the late afternoon). A friend and I were turning into the path (around Grovewood Lane and E TC Jester) early in the morning (around 5:25AM) when we heard a man screaming at the top of his lungs in the darkness ahead. He was coming towards us and continuing to yell. We turned right around and sprinted into a nearby neighborhood where a resident helped us call the police and get back home. Posting this to keep other runners/bikers informed. Hopefully this can help you stay safe especially if you use that trail early in the morning. read more

A wonderful bike ride, lots of wild life, and not too crowded. Many turtles, fish, herons, ducks and even the occasional hawk. It will be better when they have finished the construction at 610 loop and at Antoine. To detour onto the crazy speedway street is a deathwish...too many people on cell phones going right on red, oblivious and selfish. What a pity about the trash! Gorgeous natural scenery dotted with the odd semi-submerged shopping cart, plastic bottles, styrofoam. Northwest Beauty Academy...your back is not a thing of beauty..old sofas, broken beer bottles UGH. HOWEVER, I am thankful to our city for making these great bikeways, and this is a great one. read more
