I am betwixt and between on this review. We went on Saturday around 5:30 pm to meet some friends in the inside bar for drinks and decided to roll into dinner. This place is truly schizophrenic, with a raging 20 something happy hour going on right next to old people like me eating dinner. I got a Philly roll -(sadly no tamari sauce) and the seared tuna with the with lump crabmeat and bernaise. It was decadent. Our server was earnest, but a little scattered, but kept us apprised of what was going on. I would've loved a rose to be available (not just a sparkling one). My guess is, that if you avoid the 4-7 gang on Saturday night, it will be a 4 star experience. read more

Very nice dinner with a friend. Chicken Oscar was delicious and perfectly cooked. It was accompanied by tender asparagus, mixed vegetables, red potatoes and a large garden salad. Onion soup was good with a great presentation. A bit too breadth for me, but good. The summer salad was fresh and fruit toppings were abundant. Crusty warm rolls accompany every meal. It's not often I'm so moved to write a review but my experience was so abysmal that I cannot resist. First, the menu says 'Sushi Sunday' and offers everyone dining on Sundays a sushi discount of 'buy one roll get one 50% off.' After placing our order we were later told that the discount is only available if you dine in the garden and not on the deck a mere five feet away. Hmmm.. Well, my father in law ordered the soup du jour which was advertised as a beef barley mushroom soup. He asked if it was a cream soup (which he preferred) and was told that it was. When the soup arrived, it had no mushrooms in it and it was most definitely a broth-based soup. When he told the server that it wasn't what he wanted, she proceeded to take his spoon and move the soup around to show him there was indeed one mushroom in the soup. At any rate, he sent it back and she whisked it away while rolling her eyes at us. When my husband's food arrived, the seared ahi tuna was overcooked and dry, the crab meat on top was ice cold and it was covered in bearnaise sauce, despite him specifically asking for no sauce. He sent it back with rolled eyes by the server again. The rest of our food was decent but not fantastic for the prices they were asking. And the entire dinner took over 2 hours since the service was so terrible. Even my 7 year old didn't get her food for ages and ended up filling up on bread since it was after 8:00 pm at this time. When the bill came the soup was on it and I asked the waitress to remove it. She told me that they refuse to remove it since it was edible. We asked for the manager and she came over to our table and explained that the server clearly explained that the soup was a broth-based soup (which was a lie!) and they were not going to take it off. We continued to argue and she finally agreed. When she brought the bill back she basically threw it on the table in front of me and walked away without saying a word. I've NEVER been treated so poorly by a restaurant and I eat out ALOT. It's bad enough to have errors in your food but when they argue with you, roll their eyes at you, lie to cover their butts, falsely advertise specials and keep us waiting for 2 hours for food that is hardly worth the wait it amazes me that this restaurant is able to stay in business. I will NEVER go back and I urge anyone to eat there at their own peril. read more

We had a very good dinner here last night. It seemed pretty full when we arrived, but we were seated right away, on the shaded front deck. The menu favors seafood. We split a blackened scallop appetizer. There were 4 small scallops - very tasty, with a definite kick. One entire page of their menu is devoted to sushi. I had a sushi platter for one. It was very good, and plentiful (took half home). My companions had the lobster Caesar salad and crispy Asian salad respectively, and both were very happy with their choices. Generous portions, with lots of seafood. Our only disappointment was the temperature of the beer. They could have been colder. (In retrospect, we should have asked for replacements.) Crap cake. Ordered two of these mystery meat cakes and was not happy at all. After the absent waitress finally came back around, I asked her to take them away after expressing how gross they were. Food is decent. Sushi is the best option... Lots of extravagant rolls ($25) No Shower is a one and done. Super crowded, and super drunk. Lots of Basketball Jerseys, and shirtless meatheads. Bar at night is hit or miss... Can get packed, but outdoor aspect keeps it from getting to hot. Big downside is smoking is allowed outside and it can get a little much. Crowd at night is typically college age and fairly drunk, less douchey than happy hour however. Not my favorite spot, but decent sushi... And can be good for people watching. read more

I had the seared tuna with sautéed colossal crab and it was excellent. Tuna was rare, as it should be. The crab was delicious, and there was lots of it! The parm risotto was also very tasty. The green beans were a bit tough, not crispy nor tender. My wife had the veal whitebrier which was also very good. Great flavor combinations. One of the medallions was tough but the rest were nice and tender. Portions were generous, including the kids burgers (which looked great by the way!). Christy was our waitress and she took great care of us! We recommend and would certainly go back! read more

Had a great meal outside at the whitebrier. Only had to wait 5 mins for a table of 3. We got the bruschetta and artichoke dip to start and both were very good. I had the philly roll for sushi and it did not disappoint. The kitchen was a little slow but our server Bethany was amazing! We had reservations elsewhere but a sudden storm came up and flooded the streets so we decided to check out the whitebrier. Bad decision. We sat at a table without anyone checking in on us for nearly 15 minutes. The waitress, when she finally arrived, was very pleasant and helpful. My husband ordered the cilantro yellowtail roll and a small Caesar. (Both mediocre and the roll had entirely too much spicy mayonnaise-y sauce for his taste.) I got the tuna tataki and the shore summertime salad. The tuna was quite good, with 7 clean slices of great ahi on a bed of julienned cucumber. The salad was bland. We asked for a pepper mill but were told that so many had been stolen that the owner refused to replace them anymore. Wine list is varied and decently priced for the shore. GOOD Sushi!! I often go to the shore "off season" and it is sometimes a challenge to find a good restaurant that is still open. Granted, the last weekend in September isn't fully off season yet, but the Sushi at the Whitebrair was TOTALLY "ON"! On the money that is!! I've heard pretty good things about the sushi and read other YELP reviews on the sushi...but I took the plunge myself and was pleasantly surprised! The VERY dedicated server, Sean, helped us with some of our Sushi choices. "The Buck Hotel" is a signature roll of the chef's...as he also does sushi at The Buck Hotel in Feasterville, PA. The Buck Hotel roll was a mix of all that is good an yummy about sushi...and totally work the $25 price tag. We also had a tasty Rainbow Roll and a roll we asked the chef to out together for us. We had the Crab, Bacon & Cheese dip for an appetizer. YUMMY...but..odd that it was served with what appeared to be Ritz crackers...odd..but not bad. read more

Scallops were severed iced cold. 5oz filet ordered medium came out WELL done garlic mashed potato was lumpy and runny . Food was served cold. Will not go back or recommend . My family visited the Whitebrier this past week. We had a great time. Our server Teresa did a wonderful job serving us and moving things along as we had little ones with us. Teresa suggested we order the seafood penne pasta which was delicious. We also tried some sushi which was fresh. Of course the kids had chicken fingers which made them happy. We will return. We had a great NYE 2018 dinner at the Whitebriar. It was relaxing and comfortable and the drinks and service were outstanding. The dinner choices off the limited menu were nice selections and the food was delicious. So glad that we went there and hope that they do this again next NYE as we'll certainly go back! I like the idea of having a relaxing dinner and not have to pay for a fixed NYE celebration package as many of the other area restaurants and hotels tend to do for NYE. If The Eagles (the band) had written their famous 'Hotel California' song instead about a kitschy renovated bed&breakfast in suburban NJ; the result might well describe the atmosphere of Avalon's 'the WhiteBrier' with its 'darling' and 'adorable' white railings and seaside porch-swings. Only nominally is it a restaurant--well, I am sure its considered a restaurant by the locals who winter over at the shore; and by people who own all the nearby houses. But the young, dumb, full-of __ summer renters who mob Avalon from April to October simply utilize it for what its really designed for--getting sh*t-faced and picking up tail. That is the WhiteBrier in full gear. I mean, let's be frank here. Its the #2 bar for such activity after 'the Princeton' just streets away. Crowds migrate back'n'forth depending on where the fights are or who-was-gazing-at-who. Its got spacious rooms entirely empty of furniture except for a bar and a bar-rail to prop your foot on as you guzzle Coors and Bud Lite. There's a courtyard and a tiki-bar set up outside. The street alongside is jammed with honking cars and guys barking and the sidewalks are thronged with stumbling wasted young'uns looking for dark alleys to piss in, screw in, or vomit in. It does have a nicer 'feel' tp it than the dark interior concrete spaces of the Princeton. You can put your feet up on a deck-rail and sink into a wicker chair here. But its got an eerie, 'I-will-always-be-a-frat-boy' feel to it ...even if you never were a frat boy.. read more

Way, way, way overpriced for the kind of service you receive at this restaurant!! Unimpressed and thoroughly disappointed with my first experience here. My husband and I will not be back. The Meals here are $35-$42 standard for one entree. When paying that kind of money, for a meal I expect a Peter Shields (in Cape May) kind of experience. My husband and I paid $150 for the two of us tonight. This included 2 drinks each, 8 sushi pieces (for an appetizer--Sushi Sunday buy one roll get 1 roll 1/2 off), and our entrees (I had the seafood pasta and my husband had the Royal Sushi). When we first walked in a waitress was complaining about one of her tables at the hostess stand before the hostess even acknowledged us. It was a 30 minute wait for a table so we went to the bar for a drink. I had the $9 Mermaid Margarita (which I enjoyed! Best part of our visit) and my husband had rum and coke. We decided to order the octopus roll ($7 for 2 pieces--my husband and crispy crab roll $9 for 6 pieces--for me) for an appetizer at bar while waiting. Our sushi took forever to come out but was good. However overpriced!! Our table became ready so we went to that. I was disappointed because our table was one of the three in the bar instead of the dining room. It felt awkward because the bar was full of singles trying to pick one another up and grope one another. We should've been seated in dining room as the bar had totally different atmosphere. Our candle was missing from its glass holder while the dining room had candles lit. but I was paying the same exorbitant prices as in dining room so those details should not have been overlooked. Our waitress was horrible!! She never came over to our table for 30 minutes after we were seated. In fact the bus boy whom I saw often I had to ask him to get our waitress so we could order our meals. When She finally came over and did say sorry for the wait, but it was like a very laid back, I'm not too sorry kind of sorry. (No discount was offered on our bill for this long wait). Then My husband asked about the red wine special as it was stated on the menu and our waitress said "I'm sorry, our manager put that on the menu in the beginning of the summer, but there is no red wine special." Shitty manager---take it off the menu then. There is no attention to detail at this shifty restaurant. You cannot and shouldn't be charging $40 entree prices if you aren't top notch at detail (Peter Shields can charge that per plate bc they are an example of quality in everything they do.) My seafood pasta said on the menu that as as an entree it came with "bread (no bread ever arrived at our table), came w chefs choice starch and veggie (no starch or veggie came to me ever, and a salad (this did come)." Where was my bread and starch and veggie?? Especially with our hour wait for food, bread should've come. Then, when I got my Ceasar salad that came w meal we had no place settings so I couldn't eat it and our waitress never came over to check on Me. Finally when she came over it was to say kitchen backed up with sushi Sunday orders so my husband's meal was going to be awhile. She didn't even notice I hadn't begun to eat my salad. I had to ask for us to get silverware and place settings. Lastly, our Meals were just okay, but not at all for the $36 price tag for my seafood pasta or his $38 for Royal sushi. Just Ok for the price. Highly disappointed and actually very angry by our experience. There should've been compensation for this horrible time on our bill but nothing was adjusted and the manager was nowhere to be seen. Awful! We recently held our son's rehearsal dinner here. It was off-season and a Thursday night so we had the place to ourselves for our group of about 35. Bridget Tracy worked with us on the arrangements and menu. It was a wonderful experience! The room had a warmth to it,the staff was so attentive and helpful,and the food certainly exceeded our expectations. We were so happy with our choice and highly recommend the Whitebriar. read more

I will mention the fact that we were carded for going to dinner. First off, we were asked to move tables because of a mishap in reservations. Next, our waiter, Brett, took his damn time to get our order, not to mention how rude and arrogant he was towards my friends and I. Our sushi came out 40 minutes after the rest of the food was delivered, everyone I was with had already finished their meals by the time I got my food. After reasonably asking him to split our checks, he became irritated. We waited so long to just get our checks and to get it processed. (adding the fact we have plans, and we're late) While the food was pretty good (sub par), the service we encountered here was ridiculous. read more

We selected the Whitebrier to host a rehearsal dinner and a welcome party for all wedding guests. Everything about this venue turned out to be terrific. In short, the food, the service, the ambiance were outstanding. Many of our guests commented on the quality of the food and the excellent service. Most of the arrangements were made on a long distance basis since this was a destination wedding and the bride, groom., and their parents lived at some distance. Bridget Tracey could not have made making the arrangements any easier.. It really does not get much better than hearing the wedding party talking about a perfect evening. read more

Recently there with four others. Waitress instructed us to order only salads, soup and sushi because the "main" kitchen was slammed. two of use ordered sushi roll and bowl of soup and the other 3 only ordered salads. Sushi rolls came --our waitress continued serving tables and delivering food from main kitchen. we stayed only to play quizzo, otherwise would have been long gone. 2 hours later they informed us that there was no soup left and the salads finally came and were gross. Several bad experiences there and will never go back. However, the Princeton, right next door is 5 star in service, food choice and quality. And serves sushi. read more

This resturant single handedly ruined our once a year gathering in Avalon. The waitress was young and inexperienced and more attentive to the other waiter she flirted with then our table. She forgot drinks, added drinks to our tab we never got. The bread came 30 minutes after we ordered. The food was terrible. I ordered the Toro which was swimming in ponzu sauce (sacrilege!) It was tough and chewey and they had the nerve to charge $45 for it.My wifes steak was floating in bernaise and the plate looked like an alien autopsy once she cut into it. Chef's choice of starch? What if we don't like risotto?(Which was served with an ice cream scoop like we were in a prison caffetaria line). Don't they have potatoes in NJ? Best to avoid this place read more

It gets a 4 star from me because i drink there and get drunk more than i sit down and eat. I have many friends that work the bar there so i continue to return, many of those bartenders come work with me in Philly after the summers are over. WBHH is great with Vern, Ian is my favorite bartender- but Kevin is the cutest! The best place to be during happy hour is unfortunately the bathrooms, because the AC is not on in the wide open room. I understand it, but I'm sure 1 of those bangers at the bar could pay for the AC. Or get some more fans installed. It is extremly hot in there (I'm also dancing 15mph) Service is great- and why not they have a packed bar of people on vacation that want to have a good time. They stopped letting me smoke ciggarettes on the other entrance to seperate the bangies from the normal-run-o-the-mill Avalonions. I like smoking there because of the shade. Now ciggy smokers are blasting the ciggs practically inside the bar and a lot of non-smokers are getting turned off by it. I also think we( the working class drunks bringing in ALL the revenue) should be able to use the 1st floor bathrooms. So far so good- but if you plan on keeping that happy hour there, you have to cater to that crowd more and be less worried about the 80 year old couple are thinking. The projector did stop working for one of the soccer games, i would put maybe a 1 or 2 more tvs in that area. Now, the food. I ordered a grilled cheese ( my fault it was on the kids menu) just as a started with my friend, and i'm just going to say it was dipped in butter or margerine- me and every other 8 year old there for childrens night were on the crapper all night long. I was not impressed with my meal as well, however, I must admit- i am allergic to shellfish- which always makes me limited with menu selection as well as my opinion of the fare. read more

This place is definitely fun for a happy hour, however I will never eat here again. As a party of two, we decided to eat indoors for what we thought would be a quick bite to eat before going to the outdoor bar for drinks. Ordered the calamari (which was average) and the mussels (very good). Then ordered three sushi rolls. We were told multiple times that it would be a few minutes by our server, however a few minutes turned into two hours. We watched a party of 12 get seated, eat dinner (they had sushi too??) and get their check.The server then informed us that they had lost our order. We decided to take the check and go. We asked the server if they were going to comp anything or send us a free round, to which he responded "I don't think so". After asking for the manager (which we NEVER do, nor do we complain about service), the server began to describe him and basically told us to go find him ourselves. Not wanting to waste anymore time, we didn't. Walked out of there unsatisfied and pissed off for lack of better terms. Will never eat here again. read more

Had dinner with friends who were visiting Avalon for the first time tonight. Prices have definitely increased from last summer. Most entrees are between $30 and $38 for the entrees. If you share a meal, there is a $10 surcharge and they don't even divide the food onto two plates. You have to do that yourself. They did not have enough wait staff and our waitress was called in on her day off. She was excellent. Unfortunately the food was not. The seafood portions were meager and extremely overcooked. We were told the regular chef was off and the sous chef was doing all the cooking. Even the manager was not available. We ate the dinner because we were quite hungry, but we were not happy about it. We were extremely disappointed and embarrassed because we thought this would be a good choice for our friends first Avalon restaurant. We went home hungry and will probably not return again this summer. We realize that June 10th is still early in the season, but that is no reason for badly cooked food. This is my first food review online and I am only posting it because the management needs to know that this is unacceptable. read more
