I love supporting such a beloved local business and have been a customer for a long time! Employees are kind and helpful! I have ONE complaint, however. Today while shopping for my regular cat supplies, I began to think there was something wrong with my eyes - and when I looked up I noticed what seems to be brand new lighting in the store. Extremely harsh, cool-toned, LED lighting perhaps. It was extremely unpleasant. I was shopping with a family member who also noticed it and thought something was wrong with her eyes. Modern lighting such as LEDs have been studied to be harmful for eye health, and having it in the store makes for a rather uncomfortable shopping experience. I'm certain more customers will notice this, and those who are extremely sensitive and may become nauseous or get a headache may need to stay away from shopping here. Writing this review breaks my heart but it needs to be said because this is a health hazard for sensitive customers. What makes me saddest though is for the employees and live animals in the store who have to spend hours daily exposed to such lighting. I encourage people to research the hazards of modern lightbulbs and their wavelengths as this affects society at large in more ways than the average person may consider. I will probably still continue to shop here but maybe less frequently. What a sad day :( read more

I must say they have great options in dog food but there customer service really lacks .. we were waiting to pay for our dog food and Bri the cashier just looked at us and went to the other register and didn't even take the time to tell us the register wasn't open so we had to walk to her register and by the time we got there it was a long line .. she could have just told us that that register wasn't open when we was standing in it and moved over to other register .. read more

Aquatic staff are always helpful, informative and friendly. Best place to purchase healthy tropical fish and live plants. Most fish and plants in display tanks are for sale as long as the person who set up the tank is working and willing to sell. Looking to purchase some beautiful koi soon so will definitely cone back to get my koi after checking them out. Loving the big scale kois. read more

This is not your typical Petco or Petsmart pet store. They sell high quality natural dog food..for example STELLA & CHEWYS..Taste of the Wild, Evo, K-9 Natural, Dogswell, etc. Why a 2 star?? Because this place is the most DIRTIEST pet store I've ever stepped foot in. THEY SELL EXPIRED DOG TREATS!!..& TRY TO CLEARANCE IT OUT. Well, if you're gonna clearance out an expired product, at least clearance it to 75-80% off...and not $1.50 off!! The item was almost $6...they clearance the dog treat to $4. WTF?? Even if it was for $0.50 cents..I will never buy an expired item for my dog. REMINDER: If you ever shop here, ALWAYSSSS pay attention to the expiration date. Other than that, this is the place to get your dog healthy dog food and healthy dog treats. read more

As an update: If you're looking to buy better quality dog/cat food for your pet(s), then Whitie's is the place to go. They have some of the best dog/cat food brands. Remember, you get what you paid for, and this applies especially to big-name retail stores across US. I would never buy dog food from Wal-Mart nor any brands advertised on TV. They all have corn, animal by-products, artificial fillers and NO meat whatsoever. So read the first 3 ingredients on the label. If it says by-products, corn meal or anything hyphenated that you can't pronounce, chances are they're all fillers. So your pet will have to eat more to get the nutrients it needs, quickly depleting your $20 bag of dog food you bought from Wal-Mart. read more

I love the selection of fish they have. Just to start on a positive note. So far, I've encountered delightful staff as well. However, I am disappointed with the healthy fish guarantee they have and the 48 hr return policy. I bought 6 fish from them, and two died over night. No big deal, it happens. I returned the fish and got my water tested. It was just fine and I left home with replacements.However, over the next three days those fish started dropping like flies. So out of the 8 fish I got, only 3 made it. I've been keeping fish for years in my planted aquariums and have yet to see something like that. And I've ordered online and purchased from chain stores. Yeah a fish will die here and there in quarantine, but this was a bit excessive and with no hope to get my money back or replace fish. I wish they had a longer live guarantee policy; that would have kept me a returning buyer. read more

The store has great quality pet food at a reasonable price and I've always received good service here. I buy gargantuan bags of dog-food and they ALWAYS offer to help me out with it no matter how busy the store is. Considering how jacked up my back is, I really appreciate that kind of service even if I don't use it every time. I've bought things in other sections or brought friends in to help them find things and the service has always been great outside the doggie department too. The employees always walk us over to what we're looking for and offer to answer any questions before moving on. I never get anywhere close to this level of service at Petco or Petsmart. Those places always have disgruntled resentful employees whose standard answer is "Um I dont know. Maybe over there". My one complaint about Whities is the way the aisles are set up. WTF is the deal there? I understand stores that force you to pass by as many good as possible in hopes of promoting some impulse buys, but that strategy is kinda pointless in a pet store isn't it? Like if I'm there for dog-food and a leash, I'm not going to suddenly say "Oh honey look at that guinea pig. I'd never have noticed it if we hadn't been forced to walk by. Lets take it home shall we?" So yeah, Whities gets a solid 3.5 -4 from me. I'd give them a 5 if not for the impossible maze factor. Oh yeah, bonus points for them selling shelter animals instead of animal farm animals. I love love love them for that! read more

Really great store. I've been coming to Whitie's for over 15 years and I have never had a bad experience. I noticed that the older yelp reviews seem to be where people complain about poor service and store cleanliness, and I can say that I've noticed big changes in the store in the past year. They seem to have replaced a lot of the "bad seeds." Yes, the store is a little dirty, but it's practically a miniature zoo in there! You couldn't ever expect it to be immaculate. Here's what I experience on a trip to Whitie's: 1. I walk in and am immediately greeted as I head towards the back to get my dog food. Whoever greets me also always offers me assistance and asks if I have any questions. Sometimes I do have questions, and they are always very helpful and really know their stuff! 2. The prices on dog and cat food are exceptionally low. Seriously, call Petco or Petsmart and they will probably charge you much more. I don't know how a local store can compete, but they do a great job. 3. Furthermore, they carry a wide variety of dog and cat food, and they really promote the healthier, smaller brands. Years ago I was advised by a whitie's employee to stop giving my dog Pedigree, and since switching to a grain-free diet, I've never looked back. My dogs have all been happier and healthier than ever before, and they have so much energy! Whitie's does carry the grocery store brands like Purina and Friskies, but if you tell an employee that's what you're looking for they usually advise you to find a better option, which I think is great. They're never pushy about it, they just let you know a few basic facts. Note: A few times I've had to special order products, and they don't charge any extra and they will hold it for you in the back and call you when it comes in! Great customer service on their part. 4. I can't go in here without stopping to look at the awesome saltwater fish and reptiles! Shelly in the reptile department is especially knowledgeable, and on a slow day she'll talk to me about all the different animals she works with on a daily basis. 5. After exploring this mini zoo, I take my food to the front, pay, and head out! Ooh! I forgot to mention, they have cats living in the store! They aren't for sale, they're just there to sleep, eat, and play with customers! The black and white one can be a little feisty but the orange one is a real sweetheart. Overall this is an awesome local business that really cares about the health of your pets and wants to see them thrive. I'll never go anywhere else for my pet supplies! read more

I know that people have repeatedly said on here that they thought that the store was dirty. Well guess what, they are right. The cages, water bowls in the guinea pig/rabbit cage (which they SHOULDN'T be together in the first place and they need to use water bottles instead of bowls), the aviary, and some parts of the store as well were icky. I work with animals every day and I know for a fact that the animals there deserve better conditions than that. Any well respected pond or fish enthusiast would know that throwing in change into a pond/tank is bad for the fish. So to see coins and other random debris in the pond at Whitie's is sad and extremely unprofessional on their part. My boyfriend who doesn't know much about fish at least knows that the tanks need to be cleaner than that. While we were walking around the fish area, there were about three guys standing there talking while they could be cleaning the tanks. And not to mention the rude employee that tapped on the aquarium glass super hard when I had asked where a specific fish was. I will say that they do have a great range of products there. I have three guinea pigs and cats, so I find their small animal and cat product sections pretty impressing. I'm all for local business, but this place really needs to get their stuff together. There really was no such thing as customer service when I came here. (Minus the two that actually helped me, they were nice individuals. And those were two employees out of the 8/9 that night.) read more

We love Whitie's and my husband and I have both been coming here since we were children and it was downtown. We still shop here, mostly because of that and we like to support local businesses. I generally don't mind paying a little more to do that, but have had a couple of occasions when it was so overpriced that I couldn't afford it and ended up at a chain store (dog beds, similar quality). We do worry about the fact that it's easy to see that if you needed help, you might have a hard time finding an employee. I really recommend Anthony in the fish department, though. He was so helpful and knowledgeable. Overall, it's worth the minor inconveniences to shop local and close to home. read more

My family and I are originally from Hawaii, land of no snakes and very limited reptiles. You won't ever walk into a pet store in Hawaii and see a lizard for sale. Some turtles, sure. But no lizards and definitely no snakes. Nope, nope. When we moved to the Fresno area about 4 months ago, we happened upon Whitie's one day while driving around our new 'hood. I was instantly drawn to the left hand side of the store, where they keep their reptiles. It was like a brand new world had opened up for me and the hubby. We were amazed by the scaly creatures - animals that until now we've only viewed at the zoo's reptile house. We left Whitie's that day spending quite a bit of money and adding a new member to our ohana: Eden, the bearded dragon. If you ever want to meet a spoiled rotten and overly chubby bearded dragon, come and check out Eden. She was definitely healthy and well taken care of when we bought her as a baby and she's thrived ever since. Since that fateful day, we've been weekly Whitie's customers. Yep, weekly! We've come back for supplies and feeders and also stop by just to chat and check in with their friendly and knowledgeable staff. We're there at the store so often, we might actually be a pain in the ass. Sorry, guys! We just keep coming back for more and you guys are so fun to talk to! Fast forward just a couple of months and we now have 4 bearded dragons, 1 leopard gecko, 1 ball python and 2 millipedes. I blame the obsession on Whitie's. Had it never been for that fateful day and handling Eden for the first time and falling in love with reptiles, we wouldn't know the joy of cleaning lizard poop and buying crickets and mealworms by the hundreds. I kid, I kid. We love our scaly babies. They've been wonderful additions to our family. That being said, since the reptiles we have tend to live 20+ years, Whitie's will have our money for quite some time to come. And I am perfectly okay with that. read more

Bought 16 various tetra's. The person who waited on me got water from one tank--caught the fish from another 4 tanks--then put them all together in one bag (?). He said. " They will be good to go for about 2 hours". Said, "If they look stressed when you get home just float them for about 4 or 5 mins. then let them go". Those were the instructions I was given. I went to pay and the first thing the cashier said was, "There's a 48 hour guarantee, bring the fish back in the original bag with the receipt and a water sample". Should have known I was in trouble with those instructions and the first thing the cashier said. Got home and they did look stressed but after setting them free they seemed to be doing good. Looked at them in the morning and they were ALL dead! Brought them back, went to the cashier and pulled out the bag of dead fish, told her they died and she rushed me right to the fish department. Anyway long story short I'M SCREWED! (out of $60.00) They said it was my water that killed them and they waved GOOD-BYE! ALL MY OTHER FISH ARE ALIVE AND JUST FINE! If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The customer service there is amazing. They've helped me get my stubborn box turtle back on to eating veggies and not just worms. They helped with my dogs itches due to allergies. Everything they've suggested has worked wonderfully. The most important one was when they advised me to try cbd treats for my dogs arthritis pain. It has worked amazingly. My baby girl walks and runs on all 4 legs now without issue. I cried when I saw her running for the first time. It's been so long since she's ran. I can not believe the rudeness of these employees. I went for baby pinhead crickets Miss know it all had to tell me what she thought was information I needed to know. I asked for them a certain way she rolls her eyes rips the bag open outs less in the bag. I can not believe the customer service at this place. I never had this problem before. I am making sure when they grow I never go back for crickets here again. Freaken know it all apparently don't know how to keep customers happy. I'd like to go to this store whenever we are in town. Since I'm interested in reptiles, I have to admit that they have decent collection with small reptiles such as variety of geckos, blue-tongued skinks, bearded dragons, chameleons, newts and frogs. I notice that most of other stores don't often carry newts but this place does. It's a plus!:) Also, the staff who works at the reptile section is very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Like everyone else mentioned, the store layout is a bit odd and somewhat cluttered so I have it rated for 4 stars. read more

I went for dog food. I prefer higher end foods with no meal or by products, not stuffed with fillers, etc. While Whitie's had a few of the brands: Orijen, Acana, limited selection of Primal. What they had was VERY expensive. Coming from the Bay Area I expected Fresno pricing to be more reasonable or at least close in price. For instance I purchase a Primal 16 oz goat's milk at a chain in the Bay Area called Pet Food Express, $5.99, at Whitie's I believe it was $8.49. Yikes. And in the Bay Area, I can purchase 4 and get one free. Orijen Tundra 4.4 lbs was only a few dollars more the I typically purchase it for $27.99 vs. $30.99 at Whitie's. The staffed offered to order anything that I could not find in the store, very kind. It is good to know they are there as a backup, but will likely not be my primary source for my dog food. read more

Always such a helpful place each time we are in. We visit quite a lot due to the amount of pets we have. They meet every one of our pets needs and always able to offer helpful info when needed. They will also take in animals that need new homes... We have a new addition because of that. Worked out for us and the people that needed to re-home their pet. We had a very aggressive fish a few weeks ago, that they so kindly took in for us and even gave us a store credit. A really great pet store!!!! read more

I've been going to Whitie's pet store for over 13 years and am very happy to support a local business. I agree with other's that the place is a little less sterile than the big chain stores like Petsmart & Petco but I would attribute that to Whitie's being a small, long-standing local store. The store staff members are friendly, informative and helpful. There is a very large fish & reptile/amphibian section. I know many parents that take their small children there for a little zoo-like adventure. I know it was my son's favorite place to go when he was a little guy. They also host animal adoption events with Animal Compassion Team (A.C.T.), which is a local no-kill animal shelter. We were able to adopt our perfect multi-breed, Sawyer, at one of these events a couple years back. All in all, I would say that Whitie's is a great pet store and it is very important to support our local businesses. read more

In the past, I had to travel across town into Clovis to Tractor Supply to purchase dog and chicken feed until I recently discovered this pet store after living in the neighborhood for a few months. They do not advertise at all so it was by chance I happened to see the store while driving down Blackstone Ave a couple days ago. On my first visit here I scored a great deal on an open/damaged bag of Diamond Natural Ultra/Chicken and Rice formula dog food fro $24, which I usually pay $28-$32 for. The staff here are very friendly. Bob, who helped me navigate the store and find the dog food was very pleasant and seemed like he really enjoyed his job . I am happy i discovered this place. This is a great local business, prices are good but not always the cheapest. Staff has always been very friendly, competent, and knowledgable. They have puppies in there on certain days, cats, birds, reptiles, hamsters, rats, mice, rabbits, and a really great selection of salt water and freshwater fish. They carry all the supplies you would need for whatever your pet is, they have even matched the price of some aquarium stuff from an online store. I remember when Whitie's used to be the authority on pet supplies and info. I wish things were like that today. I'm trying to start a planted aquarium which requires a special sand and gravel plus special lighting. I visited a completing store, but when they didn't have the products I needed, I though I'd try Whitie's. Unfortunately I couldn't find someone to help me and when I did they were busy goofing off. I finally got an employee to help. I asked a few questions on what type of substrate they were using in the planted tanks on display. He told me "Uh, actually all the stuff in these tanks we don't even carry anymore." I would have been more than happy to place a special order but that wasn't even offered to me. They have a frequent buyer program for their dog food. I appreciate that, however one star off because the cashier wasn't willing to hand out a card while there was no manager on duty. We had just purchased a 40# bag of dog food and were hoping to get our first punch, but it didn't happen. Bummer. Hope they fix that because customers like frequent buyer programs. This store is not very clean and my first impression of it was that it was disorganized as well. They do have a pretty good selection of fish and reptiles. They also have a good selection of dog accessories such as leashes, collars and harnesses. I will continue to consider purchasing these types of items from Whitie's. While this pet store has a good selection of dog food, my future purchases will not be made here. I bought a bag of Nature's Best Puppy Food, got it home, opened it and the bag was full of bugs! I threw the entire bag away and went and bought another bag at PetsMart. read more

Fish people: just got a huge shipment and everything is clearanced our Labor Day weekend! I found the most beautiful sarasa long fin goldfish today, ask for Richard, he knows what he is talking about "nicest comet I have ever seen". 8-inch bright red, with 4 inch white iridescent fins. They have beautiful butterfly koi and a few xxxxl white goldfish, going back tomorrow to trade the "accent comets" I got from them 2 years ago that are huge now and taking over my pond. read more

We came here to pick up a few things for our red ear slider turtle FLASH. I couldn't believe how much lower the prices are COMPARED to some of the stores we've been going to. We picked up a mystery snail, albino catfish and aquatic plant for FLASH.. Taylor in the fish department was so knowledgeable and helpful.. she also referred us to a few people who handle the red ear sliders.. we will definitely be back! read more

I dont usually write reviews, so bear with me. We went to this place after dinner because it was nearby, and we needed food for the dog. We were just looking for some generic stuff because we arent versed with animal foods, but Brenna managed to make the whole experience enjoyable. She showed us a few different brands and what some recommend, as well as what she has tried with her dog, and often mentioned things we have been having issues with (like our dog is picky, and also theres other stuff you can buy to mix into the dogfood to make it appealing). She showed us some sale items and we were on our way. Or so we thought. On the way out several people were very sweet/sincere with their greetings. I am usually offput by stuff like that but everyone seemed genuinely nice there. Finally, there was a store cat! I think it just walks around the building and maybe lives there, i saw it at the automatic door trying to get in and an employee let him/her in. Adorable! This place is great and we are definitely going out of our way to come here from now on. But the spotlight goes to Brenna! Thanks so much! read more

One of the better selections of fish in the area, on occasion you can find some rarer stuff. However, I've had more bad experiences with the health of their fish than not. A lot of the Petcos and Petsmarts in recent times have stepped it up to be safer bets when you're not looking for something too special (although smaller systems, easier to keep out illness and eliminate it if it enters). Whitie's has many dedicated employees who DO know their stuff. I can only guess it's an upper level issue. I do enjoy coming here and finding things I usually can't find in the area, but often end up being disappointed in the end. Hope they can improve. read more

We used to love coming here for all our pet needs, especially their fish selection. We just recently set up a 150 planted tank so we are trying to figure out what fish we want. We have been in three times within the past seven days. The tanks were poorly maintained and super cloudy with sickly fish in many of them. Not one person asked if we needed any assistance. All three times we left without buying anything. Partly because of the lack of good looking selection and because, to be honest, not one employee even acknowledged we were there. 150 gallons is a lot to figure out in terms of what kind of fish to get... would have been a good sale for them... but if customer service stinks, not interested. It really is a make it or break it for me. read more

This is a genuine Pet Shop. It has everything that you will require for most pets. Come to Whities first and don't waste time at the chain stores (i.e., Petsmart, Petco, etc.). I come here to buy my dog food since they have the widest selection of top quality dog foods on hand. read more

This place has really gone down hill. We used to shop their for our dog's necessities, we would even take her in to get her nails trimmed when they had a vet. My dog became a patient at the vet's clinic, but for the life of me I could not remember his name. Upon calling Whities to get some information on how I could locate him, a very rude lady answered the phone. I nicely asked if she could get some information on how to contact him, and she rudely stated that they haven't had a vet for at least five or six years, which I know for a fact, it hasn't been that long. She made zero efforts to even ask someone else, so for that reason and the rising prices, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I give this place a few more years before they close up shop. Their wonderful customer service is what always kept me coming back, but sadly, they have just lost a customer. read more
