Brunswick stew
Ashley T.

I had the stew box with a pulled pork sandwich, brunswick stew, oatmeal raisin cookie, and half and half tea. The stew was perfect and the pulled pork flavorful and not dry. The oatmeal cookie was banging. I personally like my tea to be strong and barely sweet and this was perfect for me. The sandwich comes standard with slaw but no sauce (also my personal preference). We went through the drive thru at about 630 on a Friday night. Service was friendly and fast.

Chocolate chip cookie

Stopped through today and grabbed a turkey sandwich lunch box. Good deal: sandwich, 2 sides, cookie, and a drink for $7. I stopped in because I have been seeing the corn salad on social media and it intrigued me. I substituted it for baked beans (didn't need the baked bean juice on my work shirt anyway). It was very tasty. Not as glorious as I imagined, but I'd get it again. It was refreshing from the usual chips at other places. It had corn, tomatoes, onions, celery, and I think some sort of mayo-based dressing...maybe white sauce? I'd recommend trying it. Everything else was also delicious. Turkey sandwich on wheat bun is consistently good and potato salad was goo,My first time having a Whitt's cookie. I got the chocolate chip and it was excellent. It was a big cookie, thick, chunky, chewy, and fresh. I'd consider these by the dozen, but can get pricey. Sandwich should come with a small cup of sauce. It doesn't and it is 30¢ extra. One thing about this visit though: the lady at the drive-thru was not very friendly today. The Spring Ave location always has a friendly window-worker. I hope this is just an off day for her and not a common occurrence. I am a sucker for good, friendly customer service and will try fair food again if service is good. Thank you Whitt's. See you again.

Delicious BBQ pork sandwich (w/rib sauce instead of the vinegar based)
Ashley M.

I've gone back after finding out I could get the rib sauce instead of the vinegar based sauce. It's much better suited for my tastes. I've tried a lot of BBQ places lately and their BBQ pork is better than most.

Much better than Big Bob Gibson's!! Too bad it's only a carry-out place. Would be nice if they actually had a place to sit down and eat.

Those who know BBQ often say, "For best BBQ in Alabama, go to Big Bob's." It's not just the best,…read morebut also the inventor's of Alabama Style BBQ, which is particularly notable for the white sauce that's served here and was invented by Big Bob. Big Bob founded the spot back in 1925 and only recently passed away, giving the business to his children. The place is an institution of the state and is packed on weekends. Prices are from an era that's now long gone, making this not only incredible BBQ, but also a steal for the money. I mean, who sells a BBQ pork sandwich for under $5 in 2026? Many staff working here clearly have been around for a long, long time. So, one might ask, what should I get at Big Bob's? For starters, the chicken wings. Likely the best smoked wings to be had anywhere: just the right amount of smokey profile while being tender and juicy. True perfection in something that's hard to master. Next, one of the samplers is not a bad idea. Pulled pork is truly state of the art, winning many competitions around the South. Ribs are fall off the bone and delicious. Brisket is good, but a low fat version that might or might not be to someone's taste. Hand cut French fries and baked beans as a side, and finally, life is all set. Sure, if one gets more adventure, the ice box cakes are wonderful also, with the coconut varietal being a standout. Stop by, enjoy and leave with bragging rights for having tried something truly one of a kind.

I have been eating Big Bob's BBQ my whole life. The quality and taste of the pork shoulder, smoked chicken, and Brunswick stew I recently purchased was very very disappointing. We ordered 2 pounds of pork shoulder. The meat had no taste. I couldn't detect hickory smoke. The pork was burnt and very fatty. The accompanying vinegar based sauce was not seasoned like previous times. Basically it was vinegar with little seasoning. 1/5 The smoked chicken, my favorite, was dry. I wondered if it was leftover from the previous day. The seasoning wasn't very good. 2/5 The Brunswick stew was not good. The recipe has changed. It tasted sweet which was off putting. I do not remember Brunswick stew tasting sweet. The quart of stew had 10 tiny pieces of potato and a few corn kernels. I saw some pork meat floating in a strange red colored broth. I remember when stewed tomatoes were in the stew. Not anymore. The soupy stew did not taste very good. 2/5 The potato with pulled pork was ok. The sauce given was a thin vinegar base that had little seasoning. The potato was the best thing I ate from Big Bob's. 3/5 I am thoroughly disappointed with the quality and taste of Big Bob's pulled pork, smoked chicken and Brunswick stew. I will return again. It will be a while though. I can't get this visit out of my head. This feels like a bad Twilight Zone episode. I really have enjoyed the foods from here in the past. Sadly, not this time. 2/5

On my most recent visit about three weeks ago, Marlin's wound up being my choice for a quick lunch. This is a rather oddball restaurant. Located in a standalone building on the edge of a large parking lot, the vibe inside I'd say is closest to an American-Mexican restaurant (a la Rosie's, Buena Vista, etc - think vibrant murals, comfy booth seating, large, open spaces). It was a little dimly lit but clean. A friendly hostess got me a seat quickly. The menu continues the oddball vibe. There's literally something for everyone here, with American-Mexican favorites like fajitas and arroz con pollo, along with standard American fare like chicken tenders and pasta dishes, as well as slightly more upscale items like fish and steak. I saw on their website they claim, "We're not just one thing - and that's the point." Well, they've certainly nailed that mantra. My waiter was a pleasant fellow who worked diligently to ensure my meal and check arrived in a timely way. He got me a refill without me having to ask but didn't hover or make me feel like I was unwelcome or a chore. My meal came out quickly and I was in and out in ~30 minutes, which is a pretty good turn-around for a sitdown restaurant. Every table seems to get a complimentary basket of hush puppies as a welcome/starter item. Again, I'd say the vibe overall is closer on the Mexican side of restaurants, so one might expect chips and salsa...but despite this seeming oddity, I'll admit I enjoyed them. They were golden brown, slightly sweet and slightly savory, and came with a tasty dipping sauce. I ate several. They have a lunch menu with reasonable pricing following a typical pattern of entree + one side (dinner portions come with two sides). I was feeling unadventurous and wound up getting chicken tenders and fries, as I thought the tenders looked pretty good in a picture I'd seen on Yelp. I asked for some ranch to dip in. My food was fresh at least in terms of temperature - almost scaldingly so. I got a strong frozen-fried vibe from both fries and tenders, though. Less a crime with the fries, and these were salted nicely and not too greasy. The chicken was rather dry and stringy and the breading didn't really "crunch." They were ultimately unobjectionable, but reminiscent of maybe a McDonalds crispy chicken strip, which seems a little underwhelming from a full restaurant. The ranch was also not very good - not buttermilk, so not super creamy, kind of bottled salad dressing vibes. Ketchup or the residual sauce from the hush puppies was a better choice. Overall, not super wowed but not super let down either. Service was solid and the environment was comfortable. Since the menu is so large, I'd imagine there's something for everyone - and maybe a sleeper hit dish on there, too.
