One of many good reasons to like Decatur is Big Bob's Gibson BBQ. Now this is close to being sacrilegious but I don't go for their white sauce,or even their famous hickory smoked BBQ, I love the catfish. Always fried in good grease not rancid like some places I could name, their catfish is so sweet and tender and fresh, it almost jumps off the plate and into my mouth. Whether it's slaw or potatoes or beans all the fixings are right on perfect to match whichever meat you choose. But, my five year old self knows it's better to take home leftovers than to leave without a piece of their chocolate meringue pie. This time I bought one for later. There are many fine dining experiences in North Alabama and Tennessee and some these restaurants involve a pilgrimage to get there. Big Bob's lives up to its fame still. Another Great Location I stopped at this Big Bob Gibsons for dinner while in the Decatur area. This is not my first Big Bob Gibson's rodeo as I've eaten at the thier 6th Avenue location. The Danville location is more of a satellite location, still serving up the same quality and consistency as the 6th Avenue location, but if you looking for Big Bob's merch then this isn't the place. The 6th Avenue location has the books, all the sauces and rubs, the gift baskets and the other Big Bob's merch. The Danville location only had some sauces and one of the rubs, so be warned. Now to the food, I ordered a rib plate with a side of brisket. My Barbecue sides were greens and red potato salad. The meat was cooked as Bob's always makes it, juicy. smoky and good. The sides were very good as well. The staff were great, and they helped me to select the rib plate and the side of brisket and I was not disappointed. One thing you will get from Big Bob Gibson's locations is great barbecue at a very reasonable price. read more

Great place for some bbq eats. I had the full slab of ribs, fries & mac/cheese. The ribs are fall off the bone St. Louis Ribs. The fries are pretty basic, and the mac/cheese is good. They provide 3 sauces on the table, original, hot & a white sauce. I'm not a fan of any of the 3 but the ribs are seasoned so well you really don't need any sauce in my opinion. They get 1 star for the ribs, 1 star for the mac/cheese and 2 stars for customer service. The Full Slab Platter is $32.99, and it was so much food I actually had 3 meals. My server was Keely and she was a dream. Very personable & knowledgeable. Sadly, they do not offer any military discount. If you're in the area, I would say give them a try. read more

I've only been to Gibson's one time, and that was five years ago. My experience then was less than desirable I haven't been back...until now. So, I thought I'd give it another shot and at a different location. This is one of their newer locales, it's fairly small and you order at the counter and wait for your food like a typical QSR. I thought I'd try several things, so I went with a combo platter choosing brisket and chicken, with sides of potato salad, baked beans, and macaroni & cheese. The sides were all very good! (Last visit, I had their coleslaw as one of the sides, and it should not even be allowed to be called coleslaw - stay away!). Potato salad was fresh and creamy, the baked beans smoky, and the mac & cheese creamy and flavorful. Unfortunately, the meats didn't hit the mark for me. The smoked chicken was quite dry and the brisket was average. I did try their peanut butter pie for dessert and it was fairly good, but nothing especially noteworthy. The restaurant staff was friendly, but the place was not well-kept and was a bit dirty. Their trash receptacles were horrible as there is only a tiny 4 inch hole in which you are supposed to dump your trash. One ends up having to hand pick the trash off off the tray piece by piece in order to put it in their trash receptacle. read more

This is a tough review, as I know that this establishment is an Alabama icon. However, I would be remiss if I did not state the facts that I witnessed. First, the food tasted good, was well presented and provided good-sized portions. Regrettably, that's where the good stuff stops. The cashiers attitude was nonresponsive and cold, not very welcoming in any shape or manor. I know we all have bad days but when you're in the customer service business you have to check that at the door. I was taken aback by being charged .25 cents for a glass of tap water... come on man, build this cost into your meal prices and don't nickel and dime customers. In addition, you might want to take those .25 cents and pay someone to clean the dining room and tables, especially the sauce bottles and the salt and peppershakers. I went to use one and it was disgusting! These bottles have not seen a rag in a long time. I think you are on borrowed time and if you do not stop resting on your past laurels your fate is inevitable. As for me, I will not be back. I heard that Gibson Big Bob BBQ is one of the best BBQ in Alabama. So I had to try it. Price is very reasonable (very cheap) compare to prices in California. I had huge expectations on taste but very disappointed since it didn't taste good as I expected. Ribs still had too much fat in between meats. It seems like it is not cooked. The best of the best everything! My favorites are, chicken potato and it's huge, I can make 4 meals off it, Brunswick stew, chicken, turnip greens. We drove down from Nashville to check this place out. It keeps popping up in the newspaper and on television as being a great barbecue place. We were wonderfully surprised that it lived up to all the hype. I had a huge salad with pulled pork, my friend had the same but with brisket, her husband had a platter with ribs, brisket and turkey, and my husband had ribs and chicken. We covered all the smoked meats and everyone decided that the food was wonderful. Our waitress was working double time trying to keep up, great service. We had the BBQ and it was great, it had a good taste and was cooked perfectly. Sauce's were on the table so you could put the amount you wanted on your BBQ without worrying about it being too much or not enough. I had the fries and they were awesome cooked perfectly not overly greasy or anything. Everything came out hot and on time after we had finished our salad. The salad was good also, we had the sauce on the side so we could put what we wanted on it as we ate also there were no ends or bad pieces as you usually get at other places. Service was Ok we had to get a few things for ourselves the menus to look at the deserts for one thing and a couple other things but nothing major. Ambiance is good lots of things to look at and a good bit of information posted on when and how they got started and some other information about Decatur and the surrounding area. Eating here is like eating with family. Food is delicious and atmosphere is great. Fast service with a drive thru option. The macaroni and cheese is the BEST I have ever had!! Seriously! The food was good but nothing to write home about. The chips are just bag chips not homemade. We had the ribs and brisket. I would suggest the ribs. Not impressed, we went to the Danville rd location on 5-29-21. I had the chicken stuffed potato with a side of slaw, my wife had the beef brisket plate with baked beans and Mac n cheese. The small amount of chicken that was on my Luke warm potato was dry and crumbly, my wife had her brisket chopped and it likewise was dry, the Mac n cheese was so thick that the whole portion wanted to stick together when you tried to get some on your fork. I really didn't care for the slaw either. I had heard a lot of hype about how good the bbq is here but I just don't see it. I have never been a big fan of Gibson's. I know it's the white sauce that made them famous, but that's where I draw the line. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to sauce. I like the red sauce over the white, but to each his own. We opted for this smaller location since we had customers with us. One ordered the smoked turkey baked potato, which he said he loves and gets it every time when eating here. Colleague ordered the turkey sandwich, which she said was some of the best turkey she had ever had. I chose the turkey plate and would agree that this turkey was really good, along with the fries and baked beans. I stuck to my red sauce and was happy with that. Price was also not bad for 4 people. I love Bob Gibson's and have been a customer for over 30 years. Sad to say it but this location is not taking COVID precautions or Publix health seriously. I recently went through the drive through to pickup a family meal and three of the staff had masks hanging down with their full noses exposed and one of the visible kitchen staff had his mask hanging down under his chin. I threw away $70 worth of family meal and sides because this restaurant isn't following guidelines. I want to support them but clearly they do not care that they could be spreading covid to each family they serve. I did message the owner but he didn't care enough to respond. read more

I tried the mayonnaise based bbq sauce, and it reminded me of a peppery ranch dressing. The cole slaw was not the creamy kind I prefer, but it was more like vinegary cole-sawdust. I did not like their take on coleslaw. The brisket was lean, and the sauce was good - but my favorite bbq is still Cecil's in Orlando. To tell you the truth I liked the other location better. Not a gnats hair difference in the menu. It was just as clean and folks were just as friendly. It was just so. Same sauce, it wouldn't surprise me if the meats had come out of the same pit. The chicken was tender and juicy. It paired up well with the white sauce. Slaw was cold and creamy, beans were jazzed up with pork cracklings and a bit of brown sugar I believe. We didn't sample the ribs here but a plate full walked by and they sure seemed to measure up. It was clean. Service was agreeable, friendly like they didn't dealt to borrow your car as much as they cared that you enjoyed your supper. My only real complaint is that I didn't get but one slice of lemon in my tea. It was mighty good tea too. read more

The pulled pork is outstanding, but their chicken with the white BBQ sauce is superb. People in Texas think white BBQ sauce sounds bizarre, but let me tell you...it is delish and should not be missed on your tour of N. Alabama! You can even buy a bottle to take home and share the goodness of white BBQ sauce from Gibson's! YUM! The sides and desserts are mediocre at this outpost of Gibson's. The service was not very friendly and I didn't think the restaurant looked particularly clean. Most disappointing was the Brunswick Stew. We used to buy it by the gallon in Huntsville, but the stuff here was a watery mess. Sad. If you eat here, pretend you are on the Atkins diet and just eat the meat. It is the way to go! read more

I had such high hopes for this place. I've even read the Big Bob Gibson's BBQ Book. Being from Los Angeles and constantly hearing how much bbq out there pales in comparison to true southern bbq, my fiancee and I went a few hundred miles out of our way while moving to Virginia just so I could get Big Bobs. Once we got to Decatur it was raining, and as we were in a moving truck had no access to a car. So we walked a mile each way in the rain just to get to what I had built up in my head (especially after hearing the rave reviews of bbq gurus ) as a bbq shrine... Boy was I disappointed. The chicken was dry, the pulled pork was bland, and the best part about it was the baked beans. I was absolutely crushed. The service was not very good either ... so pretty much nothing saved this place for me. I made my own white sauce at home that was twice as good as the bottled that Big Bobs originated and served. Again, I was just absolutely crushed. But I had heard just such great things that I wanted to give them another chance so I got back in line and got ribs to go. I wanted so badly to be able to love this place. They didn't have any bags for me to carry the food in, so I had to wrap my container in newspaper so it would survive the mile plus walk back to the hotel in the pouring rain. When I got back to the hotel room and tried the ribs again I was yet again crestfallen. The Memphis bbq I had was also far below my expectations...so maybe true southern bbq is a myth, or perhaps I've just been to all the wrong places so far, or at all the wrong times. I've lived in Memphis for over 20 years and can get good bbq at a number of places, but was in Decatur for my daughter's soccer tournament and thought I'd give Big Bob Gibson's a try. I was very curious about their famous white sauce. All of the sauces are on the table, so you don't have to commit to any certain kind when you order. Their traditional sauce was my favorite, although the white sauce was very good. The chicken was very juicy and the pork had a delicious smoke flavor. I would definitely go back for the food, but what separates Big Bob's for me was the service. The staff behind the counter was friendly and made great recommendations. They greeted our group with big smiles. Side story...My daughter left behind a very expensive pair of sunglasses. We didn't realize it until 3-4 hours later. We went back to the restaurant and someone had found them, but they couldn't figure out where they had placed them. This was on a Saturday evening & the restaurant is closed on Sundays. I left my name and phone number for the manager to get in touch with me, fully expecting to have to call them back myself. By 9:00 am Monday the manager had found the glasses, contacted me, and (since I was already back in Memphis) offered to mail them. They arrived Tuesday (the very next day) bubble wrapped and boxed. Often times we're just lucky to get great food, but when restaurants are willing to take care of their customers the way Big Bob's did me and my family, it deserves to be heard.
