I used 306 Barbecue in Athens to cater a lineal society meeting. I worked with Michelle to work out the menu details and delivery logistics. She was delightful to work with. The food delivery was scheduled for 12:00 to 12:15pm. Two gentlemen from 306 arrived precisely at 12;00. Our meeting was still underway with the Alabama Division President speaking. The gentleman were as quiet as church mice as they unpacked and laid out the food on the serving tables. I quietly met them in the hallway, paid them and thanked them for their professionalism. The food was delicious; smoked chicken, pulled pork, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, dinner rolls, apple cobbler and iced tea. You can't go wrong with 306 Barbecue! read more

Meats and sides were absolutely amazing! We rolled past this on the way to Costco after getting off of the interstate. Decided to wait out the traffic there after getting gas. So glad that we did! We got the three meat combo with three sides. We went ahead and went with ribs which is a little bit extra. I'm so glad we did. They were fall off the bone but not wet if you know what I mean. The smoked turkey was outstanding and the pulled pork was really good. I liked their signature sauce in the pictures. They had other sauces up by the counter. It is a place your order at the counter and they'll bring it out to you sort of deal. Everyone was very nice and outgoing very helpful. Two TVs plenty of tables outdoor seating if you'd like. Im particular about BBQ. I love my Kansas City style. This place is well set out inside. Plenty of tables. I had the special with 2 sides. The BBQ was good. The coleslaw was a little vinegar for my taste. Service was fast. Baked beans good. The BBQ sandwich had pickles and coleslaw. All in all a good solid representation for BBQ. read more

2.5 out of 5 but I can't bring myself to round up. I made a special trip to 306 after work just to try the bbq. Been hearing about this place for years but it was never super convenient and so a visit never came to fruition. But it wasn't too far out of the way on my drive back from Decatur and 1:30 wasn't quite too late for lunch, and so I came by. The location is kinda nondescript and the parking lot is a little bumpy -- and very hard to turn left out of when you leave, as I learned. But luckily it wasn't crowded so that made things easier. I got a faint smoke smell on my walk inside but not enough to instill a ton of confidence. It's fairly spacious inside and the restaurant, including the women's bathroom, looked clean. There was a faint smell that reminded me of, like, a hardware store though, especially in the hallway by the bathroom. I've certainly smelled worse and it wasn't concerning but just kinda odd. Anyway, I placed my order at the counter for a loaded pork potato, which is my go-to when feeling out a bbq place for the first time. The girl at the register was extra friendly and bubbly and patient with me, so I appreciated that. The self-serve sweet tea I got was fine, and another employee brought my potato to me at the booth where I sat. It was a large potato, and it looked good, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. The topping ratio was good, but the pork was okay at best -- not fatty or gristley, at least, but pretty dry and not very flavorful or smokey. Even that would've been okay, but unfortunately a cardinal bbq potato sin was committed: the potato was unevenly cooked. My biggest pet peeve in all of bbq potato-land is an uneven/underdone potato. It is so frustrating to be enjoying hot, steamy, buttery soft goodness and then be interrupted abruptly by a crunchy, watery, dense chunk of potato. I hate it so much - it triggers a visceral yuck feeling in me that makes me insane! After a lot of poking around fork-testing doneness, I made the most of my meal and pitched what remained. What a huge bummer! One other thing that bears mentioning is that the whole time I was eating, I could hear several staff members loudly complaining about and bad-mouthing a fellow employee who wasn't present. I get it, honestly, and I'm far from above some occasional gossip, but this conversation went on almost the entire time I was eating and it didn't give the best vibe ever. To start on a positive, the pulled pork sandwich was very good. As were the pulled pork nachos. Notice a theme? The ribs were very weak, and had an off flavor. The turkey was a little dry, but better than most. Now let's talk about the brisket. Have you ever bought the pre cooked brisket at Sam's Club? It looked strangely like that's what it was. Uniformly cut, bland in taste, and no smoke ring. Had a smokey flavor, but no ring! Their customer service was great up until they told me not to post a picture of their employees in the kitchen. Probably the best BBQ in Limestone County. Great family run establishment, with all the classic southern BBQ classic meats and sides ....pulled pork, ribs, chicken and brisket..... and green beans, Mac &cheese , slaw , potato salad, chips , fries , etc. They used to be open on Sundays after church from 11am -2pm, but about year and half ago decided to remain closed. It was quiet just before the closed and they fortunately had some brisket left. Brisket was tender and moist. Fried okra, turnip greens, sweet potato casserole were all very good. This is a no-frills restaurant. It reminded me of a school cafeteria. There really is no service. You order at the counter, make your own drinks, and they bring your food to you. Afterwords you bus your table. The pulled pork sandwich was average, the mac and cheese was from a box, and the baked beans were average. Nothing about my experience makes me want to go back. We are in town helping a family member get some repairs done in their new house so we looked for someplace to pick up carry out for dinner. The Yelp reviews for 306 BBQ were favorable so we gave them a shot. The ladies enjoyed their chicken and ham loaded potatoes with the red sauce, but both commented they needed more butter. My pulled pork sandwich was good. I prefer more sauce so I was glad I requested some extra sauce cups. Baked beans and potato salad were good. My son said the chicken fingers that had them toss in BBQ sauce were pretty good but he added some white sauce to make them a bit zestier. The staff was friendly and welcoming. This is definitely a great spot to stop by if you have children. It's a super family friendly atmosphere. Plenty of parking outside. We ordered some ribs, shredded pork, mac & cheese, and baked beans. The ribs fell right off the bone. There was no hassle to pull them off the bone with your teeth. It just came right off. The shredded pork was OK. A bit too dry for me. The mac & cheese was very ordinary. The baked beans were good but nothing different than what I've had elsewhere. Is that is really friendly here. I did not care for the white sauce that they had. It was a bit sour to me. If you wish to do drive thru they have that option as well. We were just driving through so we happen to stop by. read more

From Yelp reviews we decided to try 306 Barbecue while passing through the area. It's a counter service restaurant with a traditional smoked menu with a few twists. We chose to get the three meat the side plate for about $25. I thought the portions were smaller than at other restaurants of this type. The food was flavorful. We got pulled pork and chicken. The pork had a natural smoky flavor and was moist. The chicken was dry and a bit tough. I was disappointed with the sauces. The traditional barbecue sauce had a familiar bottle flavor and did not stand out as a homemade item. For sides we chose the macaroni, which was not at all homemade. It seemed to be of the blue box variety. The speckled butter beans were good but were over seasoned with pork. The third side for us was the green beans. They were very sweet and also had a strong pork flavor. There was also a roll on the plate. It seemed like most of the patrons were regulars who were well known at the establishment. I LOVE BBQ, but I cannot recommend this BBQ joint. I'm from Louisiana here for work. Went to Yelp and this BBQ restaurant got the best rating. Boy was I disappointed. Went for the two meat combo. Chicken and brisket. They didn't have brisket. Plan B, ribs. With Mac and cheese and baked beans. Was gonna get potato salad but it has crunchy onions, so I passed. The chicken was very tough and dry. I could hardly pull the meat off with a fork. The ribs were also very dry and tough. There was a burnt crust on the top that I could not bite through. When you see a packed parking lot it's typically good indicator of wonderful food...misconception. Star of the night, ribs...texture seemed meat was boiled and not smoked on grill and sauce was very thin. The sides, baked beans was an extremely small serving which was left because lack of flavor; small serving of potatoe salad left no impression. Roll was a knockoff Hawaiian roll. Pricing is not the same on website as it is in person. They refused to honor this pricing after I already confirmed my order over the phone. They were rude, didn't offer me anything for my trouble. Then when I decided to go ahead and try their food anyways (curious to see if it was even worth what I ended up paying) the sides were so small and the ribs were mostly fat and bones. Went to get rib plate around 7:00 pm and food came out rather quickly. I looked in the box to make sure my order was correct. I got home and really looked at the ribs front and back they looked half cooked on the backside. When I tasted them they were too tough to chew. I ate what I could and called to complain. The lady said I looked at them before leaving and I explained that looking at them would not let me know that they were tough and chewy. She was argumentative and said they would refund half my money because it was closing time and they normally would have me bring it back. She didn't apologize for the fact that I paid $15 for some mess that I couldn't eat. This is not the first time my food has been less than satisfactory but it will be my last. 306 stop boiling/broiling your ribs and teach your employees how to properly deal with dissatisfied customers. read more

Let me raise my glass to another fine north Alabama BBQ institution: the 306 on the eastern outskirts of Athens along Highway 72. Here the Que is moist and smoked just right. For dine-in just grab a bottle of spicy red or white sauce with a kick and go wild. I always do it with the stuffed potatoes--far superior to the more famous place in Decatur. The tater is well baked --almost falls apart and the bbq dominates not just gooey toppings. Plates and sandwiches are good bets too because the sides change daily. Much more goodness here than tired slaw, beans, and mashed that you encounter elsewhere. Service is efficient and the place is clean and roomy, certainly comfortable.
