It will always be the Whittwood Mall to me. I grew up with this mall, almost literally. It was constructed in 1961, but my family moved to Whittier right before I was born, and my late paternal grandmother used to always tell the story of taking me in the stroller near the mall as they enclosed it in 1977 or 1978, and infant/toddler John S. used to imitate the hammering and other construction sounds, and he associated those sounds with being in a stroller with his grandmother. It's still hanging on, somehow. I don't know how much longer JCPenney ("Penney's," as we call it) will last, my mother's best efforts to keep it financially afloat notwithstanding. The Sears will almost surely close within the year, but that's all right, because I still and always will associate that building with The Broadway (RIP). And some of my earliest memories were created at this mall. Because the Penney's and Broadway shoe departments looked similar, I used to think they were the same place when I was four or so. I distinctly remember the shock and then gradual understanding of how two different places could look so similar but actually be different. I also memorized my phone number (my parents still have it, two area-code changes later) while walking from our parked car to Penney's: "2-1-3, 9-4-7 . . . ." I really miss the enclosed mall. Not because it was unique in any particular way, but there were all these small details that only I and a few other people of my generation remember. Like those wooden animals that were a poor substitute for a play structure in the center of the mall, and the huge-huge-huge diameter metal pipe that encircled those animals but that wasn't an actual fence, as children could squeeze under it easily. And the weird lower level of the seating for the pathetic-but-delicious food court. And the arcade! This review is now completely sopped in my memories, so I'll tell you more. There used to be a focus-group company that would try to get people to sign up for surveys while you walked. I went to one with my (older) sister, when she was a teenager and I was maybe 8 or 9. We saw mock-ups of a commercial for milk that eventually became a real live-action-and-animation commercial. That was so cool! And Miller's Outpost (RIP) and Stride Rite (RIP), and the Gap before it turned into a horrible sweatshop company and the actual phone store with all the crazy phone options and Boston Store (RIP) where I got lost for the first and scariest time as a child and Conlon Bros. (RIP) and Sav-on in the mall before it became Osco and then Jewel-Osco and then back to Sav-on before CVS bought it. Sav-on used to have ice cream like Thrifty, and the same oldish woman with the denim smock and longish, graying braids would be working most of the time. And that mysterious but comforting women's store with the fake spooky gas lamps that flickered on either side of the storefront. I also miss Farrell's (RIP) and its arcade where my siblings set high scores on Centipede. And the original theater (RIP) and the replacement theater (RIP), where I got good at the TMNT and The Simpsons video games in 7th and 8th grades. I even miss the tire store and Jewlecor (RIP) and the janky but massive Crown Books (RIP) that replaced the B. Dalton (RIP) on the opposite side of the mall. Another formative memory was walking west in the mall with my mother in the mall building on August 30, 1985. We were right near the wooden animals I described earlier, and some announcement came over the loudspeakers. I couldn't make it out, but suddenly, everyone around us was jumping and cheering and smiling and clapping as if the Rams had just won the Super Bowl. I asked my mom what happened, and she said that they had caught Richard Ramirez, the serial killer known as the Night Stalker who had terrorized Southern California for months and who had also killed the neighbor who shared a backyard fence with my cousins (I didn't know this at the time). I learned how to drive in its massive parking lot, including the ridiculous ramp up to the bank (now Bank of America). There's also a separate ramp down from the bank. The first ramp is hard to get to now that Chick-fil-A and its complicated drive-thru line are right next to it, but try it anyway! Not to mention those weird covered parking spots underneath the bank. (Can you believe the parking lot used to fill up so much that we used to actually need to park that far?) I know I had long eyelashes as a child because the furniture store (kind of like a proto-Pier 1) where Buffalo Wild Wings is now used to have a cashier who always used to tell five-year-old me that I could sweep the floors with my eyelashes. I hate the Target and PetSmart and the huge parking area in front of them, because that was where most of the mall was. It ran east-west from Penney's to Sear, with that slight "L" added later to connect Mervyn's (RIP), now Kohl's. I also miss Dandy Donuts (RIP) and the weird laundromat. Sorry. read more

Whittwood was built in the 1961 as a competitor to The Quad at Whittier. It had three anchor tenants: JC Penney on the east, The Broadway on the west, and Boston Store in the center. Sav-On was located next to JC Penney. Whittwood originally was an open-air mall, which was initially a success. It was renovated and transformed into an enclosed mall in the 1970s. A fourth anchor, Mervyns was added in the 1980s near The Broadway. Also a food court was added across from Sav-On. The exterior was remodeled in the late 1980s to lure businesses from The Quad, which had recently closed. Krikorian Theatres opened a 10 screen Premium movie theatre on the back lot, which was later sold to Regal Cinemas, who closed the theatre by the mid-1990s. Boston Store closed down in the 1990s, and wasn't replaced by a new anchor. In 1996, Federated Department Stores brought out the Broadway and decided not to convert the Whittwood store to a Macy's. It was closed and sold to Sears, which moved in by 1998. The mall closed in 2004, with the three separate anchors remaining open. The only shop open left in the actual mall was Sav-On. Not long after, the everything except the anchors was demolished. Sav-On moved to a new location within the mall property. The mall was replaced by a new town center containing big box retailers and new condos were built where the former theatre was. Wait, there's more lol. Look at all the shops and restaurants. These are the anchor tenants. This used to be the Whittwood mall and was really beat down. They have done so much to this big property and it looks amazing! I've lived in Whittier for all of my life (except for college but ya know) so I've seen the Whittwood go from mall to town center. I like the town center much, much better. Not so crowded, more aesthetically pleasing, and just an overall better experience compared to when it was a mall. The shopping here is pretty good. JC Penney, Kohls, and Target always have great deals and are rarely super crowded except for holidays. I don't really like the Sears here-- it's always hot and smells bad in there, finding an associate to help me is near impossible, and customer service is eh. The food selection here is great!! They have all my favorite fast food restaurants and Panera is great. The Pizza Studio place is a personal favorite. However, I just heard that they're putting an Old Navy or Gap in the town center.....eh read more

While the food is still tasty they are really skimping on serving amounts. I order a bowl when I go in always the barbacoa. The last 4 or 5 times I've noticed the meat portion getting smaller. Today was the smallest portion ever. Then when I order the guacamole it's about half what it was before. I looked at the guy and said " really" and he looked guilty and put a bit more on. I may give it one more try but if they continue cutting portion size then they've lost my business. read more

I have been shopping at Whittwood Town Center for 35 years! I am so proud of the remodel of the entire mall. It is a beautiful mall! However, I pay for a gym membership at 24-Hour Fitness and every Friday the car show that sets up in front of Ruby's Diner makes things totally miserable. There is already such gridlock trying to pass in front of Buffalo Wild Wings and the post office, etc. Now the car show has created more gridlock by blocking off part of the parking lot, including the part of the parking lot that passes in front of the gym. Yesterday at around 5 p.m., I backed out of my parking spot directly IN FRONT OF THE 24-HOUR FITNESS, AND BACKED INTO THE CAR SHOW SIGN! I needed to go out towards Whittier Blvd., but I was blocked off by the car show. WHY IS THIS ALLOWED? I pay for a membership at the gym. I was parked directly in front of the gym, and the car show people set up their "sandwich-board" style sign where I could not see it as I was backing out. Just doesn't make sense. Thoughtless and wrong. Thinking of moving my gym membership to the new LA Fitness in Whittier. Looks like they have great parking with no car show barriers. read more
