Great service, and good relationships with companies with awesome warranties. Needed a Marmot outer shell and an Osprey backpack repaired, both purchased from this store. Got completely new replacements of both in about a month. I wish Whole Earth would handle Marmot returns -- I had to send the jacket directly to Marmot -- but the process wasn't bad, and they sent the replacement without a fuss. But Emily + Hudson were both very helpful and responsive with the Osprey replacement. read more

Love the shoe selection plus the kids loved the toys. I also liked the crew that worked there. They were very helpful and very attentive. The prices seem in line with REI for most things that are comparable. A great selection of travel books as well. They have a pretty good selection of messenger bags and kids backpacks as well. I bought an insulated Klean Kanteen that turned out to have a deformed seal in the cap. Not only did the folks at Whole Earth replace the cap, they also threw in a free coffee mug style cap for my troubles. I've always enjoyed coming here, but this seals the deal. This is my favorite place to get gifts. Frequently there are sales on shoes and I have purchased Keen's here for a very reasonable price. Staff have always been very helpful. I wish the adult clothing were less expensive, but I think they are probably charging the going rate. I bought a great camping hammock here. A salesperson helped me find it. The camping ones are kind of hidden in the back. They seem to be more reasonably priced and durable than some of the display ones up at the front of the store. I'm giving Whole Earth five stars for its service, gift selection, and frequent sales on shoes. read more

Went in to buy a pair of shoes with my tots recently. Found friendly staff and a new pair of Toms shoes for me. Came back a week or so later since my kiddo had found a doll she wanted to buy when she had money again. Brought in my 4 kiddos under 7 years old. Friendly greetings, playful staff, even noticed and let me know I left my car door open. My son played with foam rockets with the employees. My kids love the "explore and touch" nature of the store and the many samples so they can try out the items. I like the good selection of Toms and the friendly laid back staff that give everything from product demos to restaurant recommendations ;) read more

I was in desperate need of some new light hiking shoes, and found just the right pair at Whole Earth. I love their footwear selection. It is broad enough to cover just about any need. The other areas of the store were great too. I ended up getting a new rain jacket for my son. They have all around great gear for the outdoors. The staff was very helpful without being pushy. As big a fan as I am of REI, there's something inherently charming about Whole Earth that makes it more appealing than its bigger sibling down the street. I've been to Whole Earth a few times - sometimes just to browse, occasionally with an item in mind. The staff have always been helpful without being hover-y, and the prices are what you would expect at a small, local outfitter. In my opinion, Whole Earth really shines in the small-but-nifty category: they have a much better selection of GoToobs than REI, and their array of replacement bottle caps (Nalgene wide and narrow mouth, HydroFlask, and Klean Kanteen) is the best in town. read more

Okay, I'm writing a review for this particular location because 1) I live in Austin, 2) despite it's smaller size, this location is my favorite, and 3) I almost feel like I've got to defend this store (or company) or give explanations for some of the not-so-great reviews here. But, without naming names or addressing specific reviews, I'll try to focus on my own experience. First, the staff has NEVER been ANYthing but friendly and helpful. Staff attitude is arguably the most lasting impression of any service experience. Sometimes I need help or have a question, other times I don't. Either way, they're always available and informative, if necessary. I agree that apathy is unacceptable, but I've never experienced it here. Second, I too have been to the larger chains mentioned in other reviews, and I'm not here to badmouth them, but I will say Whole Earth is better. I've shopped around, and I know I don't need to go anywhere else. Third, I've already got most of my major backcountry gear. I'm not somebody who buys the latest backpack or the newest sleeping bag, or get a new pair of boots or a tent every year. BUT, I get supplies and smaller gear just about every time I go out. Whole Earth never disappoints. I average a few hundred trail miles a year, and Whole Earth is my supplier. And when I'm ready for a replacement tent, pack, or bag they'll be my first and only stop. (Have any of the disappointed shoppers inquired about getting something shipped from another store? Or about special ordering? I will if I have to. Just a thought.) There are a lot of online outlets for clothing at deep discounts. A nasty retail fact. Perhaps Whole Earth stocks clothing they can be competitive with and focuses on gear that addresses more immediate needs (not that your clothing isn't vital). Bottom line: I have not left Whole Earth dissatisfied and I don't expect to (unlike at other stores). I've found what I've shopped for (unlike at other stores). I've gotten gear and trail recommendations from friendly, experienced personnel with firsthand knowledge (unlike other stores). Nobody's perfect. WEPCo comes a lot closer than the competition. Now go grasshopper...go on your adventure and take his teachings with you! The only thing I wish they had is an online store or a list of what they carry online. Update: 9/14/2017. My Born sandals swished with the right sandal ... very annoying and did not want to take them to Europe with me. I went back with my receipts to Whole Earth, wanting to exchange them for the great backpack the associate showed me yesterday, with so much enthusiasm ... his wife, father, mother ... everyone has one ... so, I was convinced to get one. The manager totally said yes, I can exchange it ... didn't bat an eye when I asked ... the associate at the register - well, I forgot to turn in the 6.00 gift card from yesterday ... even he had such a pleasant, positive attitude and made it happen.... This is a good spot for a large selection of organic and earth-friendly products. I don't shop here for clothes, like some of the negative reviewers have commented on, so I'm not reviewing that, but I have found tons of other treasures here. I first entered this store because I was looking for a hammock and the front patio is just like a hammock zoo. I could find the perfect one: exact size and colors I wanted. It was also reasonably priced and has lasted a long time. The store also has a good selection of shoes that are good for your feet, tons of cute BPA-free water bottles (I got an awesome Sigg that says "Make Love Not Landfill"), and lots of games and knick-knacks. I went here with my ex-boyfriend once and lost him in a section full of funny stuff and games, so be careful! :) read more

Nice, friendly staff. The juxtaposition of a toy store and an outdoor goods store is kind of unexpected, but somehow it works!
