The buffet at Whole Foods will forever be (as long as I've lived so far) my favorite buffet of all time, and this is coming from someone who truly appreciates the buffet experience, especially because of the variety, even though I don't "binge" the way I used to anymore for health reasons, and the buffet is take-home only (I think?). Not only is there such a wide variety of tasty food at the Whole Foods buffet, but you actually feel healthy eating it, and you can make it highly nutritious. You can get excited about the salads, or the roasted vegetables, or the orange chicken, or even that herb feta that you can quite frankly put on anything and everything. The way they make their orange chicken is honestly my favorite. I'm not usually someone who gets excited about orange chicken, but the way they do it here (it's just amazing) and hard to beat. I also love that I can mix together a bunch of healthy salads at once, and I really appreciate the flavor profiles and the freshness (it just elevates the whole experience). I'm honestly forever inspired by this place. It makes me want to look up recipes, learn how different flavors go together, and experiment on my own. It's as much a learning experience as it is a health experience. Anyway, I know it's not cheap, but for me, it's still really worth it. It's consistently something that makes me feel "renewed" so I'm going to keep it as a part of the routine as long as I can afford it. Another cool perk is that if you're a Prime member, you get 5% back if you use your Chase/Whole Foods/Amazon setup. And honestly, the customer service at Chase Bank is the best, and Prime is convenient, so it all just goes together; and while I realize they're kind of taking over the world right now (they are), they're doing it in a way that works for me, so it is what it is. Also, the kale salads (people really need to understand how good kale can be when it's done right) are nothing short of life changing and it can give you the inspiration you need to make it yourself. In addition to the hot bar, they also have specialty items I can only really find here (like Pacha bread, seed crackers, unsweetened coconut yogurt, broccoli greens, organic baby kale greens, and a bunch of other unique, healthy options that are honestly really exciting). That said, baseline prices are definitely high. For example, tart cherry juice at Whole Foods is literally around $14, whereas at Target (across the street) it's more like $5. So it's one of those things where you kind of have to go back and forth and be strategic about what you buy where. Let's face it, Whole Foods is not leading the world in cheap prices. Because it's pricey, you do have to be real and shop at other grocery stores when you can, but every time I go, I can't help myself from getting at least a little bit of the buffet food if it's open, because that's really where it's at. read more

My previous review is still valid, but I gotta complain about a few more things. One of our staples is Organic Pasteurized Milk. Unfortunately, they no longer offer it. They only carry Ultra-Pasteurized Organic Milk, which doesn't taste as good as plain pasteurized. The only benefit to Ultra-Pasteurization is to increase shelf life. Also, I recently bought a container of Cole Slaw from the prepared foods bar. The container was only about 3/4 full and the price was $9.47, which is ridiculously overpriced. The Cole Slaw tasted horrible, seriously, the worst Cole Slaw I ever ate. Lastly, I hate those yellow sale signs. They are so deceiving because you think you are getting a sale price, but when you get to the register, you pay a higher price if you are not a prime member. I stopped into the store before having dinner at the Porch at Siena across the parking lot. I think this is one of the nicest Whole Foods I have seen. The salad bar looked amazing and there were so many products in the refrigerated and frozen isles and many sales. Flowers are quite expensive here versus Trader Joe's, so I don't usually purchase these at Whole Foods. The small Whole Foods in Carrollwood, Florida pales in comparison. read more

Sadly, I shop at Whole Foods a lot. I started shopping there when they first came to Pittsburgh. This location is the rudest Whole Foods I have ever experienced. Recently, when I was there, I stood at the Meats counter, the only customer, while one of the Butchers and another employee (from a different department; she was on the other side of the counter but clearly a Whole Foods employee) stood there talking for minutes and minutes about their vacations, totally ignoring me. When the butcher finally walked over, he didn't even apologize for the wait. I actually decided not to purchase the $35 plus dollars a pound fillet that I was looking for, and instead got it at Market District. I was there again today getting some seafood, as the Whole Foods Market does indeed have some great items from the ocean. However, while my husband and I walked through the store we were nearly run over by an older male employee with a large wheeled garbage can. We checked out again, and as we were leaving, my 87 year old husband behind the cart, and me with some bags, the same guy with the garbage can once again bulldozed down the aisle which was rather narrow, causing my husband to brush the wall to make room for him and his overstuffed wheeled can. I went to Customer Service, where the garbage wheeling guy happened to be, and as I brought up my concerns, and stated that having worked with customers for quite a long time in my former careers, you ALWAYS yield to the people who are indeed paying your salary. Instead of apologizing, he actually, in front of the other employees gave me an attitude. And when I advised him of this behavior, one of the other reps actually told me to "calm down." Want to make a customer even MORE frustrated and angry? Tell them to calm down. She offered to get a manager, but by that time I'd had enough. Whole Foods used to be such a kind place to go, with engaged, gracious and knowledgeable people. So sad about this decline. read more

This is for the Amazon return drop off process. Worked quick. To speed things up, and not to feel rushed by the folks behind you, put your items in the provided clear bags before you start the kiosk process. Seal them shut by removing the silver strip. At the kiosk, a label will print to put on the clear bag. They do not want the shipping box, only the product box or packaging. This place lives up to their reputation as a great place to shop. To be fair, I only visit one location, but that one is exceptional in every way. The store is clean and well maintained. The service is exceptional. Anyone you ask for help immediately comes to your aid and will often walk you to the place where your inquiry takes you. Other stores can and do shift you toward another person or area. Here, every person acts as though every customer is special. I can't say enough about the way the store is laid out. There are specific areas throughout the store that makes every one feel like a specialty store in itself. There is a fish station, a cheese area, a meat counter, a bakery, deli, pizza section, hot foods and a coffee cafe. There is also an area set aside for beers and wines. The produce section has some of the best fruits and vegetables available anywhere. I hear that the prices are higher than comparable places, but I don't find that to be the case. They have a membership, like other stores that give you discounts and weekly specials. In addition, they have some type of partnership with Amazon that gives you additional access to things like delivery and Amazon returns. I can't say I go here exclusively, but I do make the trip as a part of my routine monthly shopping. I find things here that I don't find anywhere else. Plus, regardless of any recipe I'm considering, I can usually find the ingredients, even exotic ones here. The pizza alone is worth a visit. You get 2 huge slices for about $7. In my opinion, you can't beat the quality and the price is right. read more

I'm admittedly not a regular shopper at Whole Foods, nor would I consider myself their target audience/ideal customer; periodically though I'll shake things up and stick my head inside to see what's worth taking home with me. Whole Foods has the usual selections you expect from a good grocery store - produce, a mixture of fresh and frozen meat and seafood, frozen foods and meals, a bakery, some home items, that sort of thing. This store has a small wine and beer section as well. Personally, I'm most likely to head home with baked goods; something from their to-go section; and/or from their frozen foods section. The frozen foods in particular tend to catch my eye. Whole Foods as a business is openly pickier about the ingredients in everything they sell; so they offer a great mixture of higher quality breakfast options, snacks, and frozen meals. In 2020 specifically, I've made sure to visit Whole Foods during non-peak hours (this has been my general strategy anywhere and everywhere since March). That's been hugely helpful as foot traffic has been practically non-existent when I've stopped in to shop. As of this past week, directions and arrows were still taped to their floor to try to direct foot traffic. Unfortunately, in part because sections of the store do not "flow" together in a linear way, I doubt the arrows do much good when the store is busier. (This is pure speculation on my part but it's based on watching the poor behavior of shoppers in other stores.) This last part probably goes without saying, but: Whole Foods is a business that focuses on natural and organic foods, and which offers plenty of vegan-friendly products. While I'm not looking to shop with a hardcore focus on any of these things, some people are. Unfortunately, I wouldn't say that Whole Foods is the most affordable store for the average person, and that's a big part of why I'm not a regular here. Have stopped in a few times for Happy Hour at 1788 Cafe. First the pros - good beer and decent wine selection and $1 off during Happy Hour. The food is OK. The place was full and we managed to get 4 seats at the bar after a few minutes of waiting. The cons - service was very underwhelming and slow. We split a fish sandwich special for $10 that was good and the Honey Sriracha Brussel Sprouts that were very spicy and while I liked them you really could not taste any brussel sprout. The crowd was a good mix with families and couples. However, one family needs to work on inside voices for the kids and adults. Another women was so load and yelling when ordering you could hear her over all the noise and then from behind us to get drink refills. When we were leaving another couple mentioned that person too. I know WFM has no control over the guests but wow, come on people! read more

I definitely have a love/hate relationship with WF. With this location, as with so many supermarkets, you gotta chose your time - since it's a relatively small store, it can get packed, and being in any kind of supermarket with long lines and grumpy people with carts is no fun at all. Also some items can prove to be expensive, but then also not - if you wait for sales or buy their store brand stuff, it can be a good deal. Really, the main reason I go here is for vegan stuff - they continue to expand vegan options - not yet nearly enough in my opinion - but they continue to stock more and more items which is great, and they have items no one else does - vegan croissants anyone? (The donuts here are not so hot though). I'm really glad they toned down the Amazon Prime nonsense - it was overwhelming, and I'm just not interested, and to be reminded again and again is annoying as anything. I really liked this location of Whole Foods. First impression was the parking lot - it wasn't crazy and dangerous like the East Liberty one. Instantly impressed! We went on a Saturday and the parking lot was busy, but not full at all. This location reminds me of a Giant Eagle Market District inside. I was glad to see they had the fresh guacamole that is made in the store. It's so fresh and reasonably priced. I also picked up some odds and ends of different types of cheese. Similar to Penn Mac in the Strip they have little chunks of ends of cheeses for a few dollars. It's a fun way to try cheeses you aren't familiar with. I also bought a whole wedge of brie because they had a discount on all the brie cheeses. Their deli and hot food section was really neat and clean and had great options. This location also had self serve fresh pizzas for sale by the slice. I had never seen that before. I was excited to browse the wine because I was expecting natural or organic wines since it is Whole Foods. It was the same basic selection as Giant Eagle Market District. It is convenient if you're in a hurry, but I wouldn't look here for a special bottle. The cashier was friendly and the lines were not long. Went here for an Amazon return and ended up picking some cookies and hot food. The store has a general reputation of being an expensive store to shop at. But, I found some items that were actually pocket friendly - cookies, fresh flowers to name a few. They have a variety of cookies. Some Valentine themed as well now. I got the almond chocolate cookie - the best cookie I have tasted in a really long time!! It was perfectly crunchy, mouthwateringly chocolaty. Also got the oats berry cookie - it was alright. In the Hot Foods session, picked up the arancini balls and fresh spring rolls. They were surprisingly good. It is a great food bar to grab some quick bites. The intersection to get to the store has super long lights and the electric car charger is a joke. I charged my car for an hour and it went up two percent. OK. So I have 7 things on this list to be prepared to read. It might be more if I stopped to really think about it. The first 5 are general for all, the last one towards freedom loving Americans, the 6th one, I admit is a personal issue. lol. The last one really puts us all in danger. 1. This is the smallest Whole Foods I've shopped at. So it seems that what is available is lacking. The 3 in Norther VA I shopped at were much bigger, but that may be because they started off as Fresh Fields before being bought out by Whole Foods. Even the one in Shadyside is bigger than this. 2. I use the water machine to fill up bottles of RO or High PH water. But it was placed right across from a big structural support beam. When people get water it makes it hard for others to squeeze through. Whoever laid the place out needs to be fired! 2.5. I really want the high PH water. Alkaline water. But many times the reader never gets above 7 or even 7.5. Well, I'm sorry but that is just normal. I no longer say I've gotten high PH water if most of it isn't over 8. 3. The prepared foods section isn't good. Half of the hot stuff is ALSO sold cold. Be original mix it up, give us more. And the deserts available there are lacking and highly priced as well. What ever happened to having nice big slices of cake in the prepared foods section? Also much of the deserts that are in the desert section right before the prepared foods section is WAY over priced. Much of the time they food they do have just isn't appealing. 4. I get Almond Milk and Coconut Milk. They use to have some available in a 2 pack bu no longer offer that. All I get told is that I could buy it on line. Why do I want to buy stuff from the same place BOTH on line and in store. It's asinine. That might not happen if they were bigger like they should be. 5. They have some products they label as "local" but the company is in Philadelphia. How the hell is Philly local to Pittsburgh? Within a 200 mile radius you will find Columbus Ohio, Washington D.C., Buffalo NY, and even Canada. Heck even Detroit is just outside of that radius. But Philly is still well outside of that 200 miles. Who figured that? Are they on drugs? 6. The people do seem nice. But the majority of them seem to be nothing more than hipsters and hippies. While that really isn't a problem overall, it may explain why I was easily overlooked the couple of times I tried to apply for work there. But that really is fine as #7 has me no longer interested in working there anyhow. 7. No guns allowed. What is the best way to make sure you become even a BIGGER target to any crime, including a shooter? Make it a non gun zone and post signs about it. That is the safest place for a criminal because nobody there will be able to shoot back. That's why so many shootings happen in schools. read more

This is a dual review. The first part will focus on Whole Foods. The second part will focus on 1788 Pub inside the store. Part one. Arriving on opening day the place is packed but they do have guides leading you to park. The lot is not overly big but I was directed to an inside basement parking where I was able to secure a spot. By the time I left they were directing traffic up the hill to a new development parking area which is still under construction. What makes it handy is that there is elevator service from the ground floor up to the shopping entrance. I grabbed a cart, picked up some coupons they were giving and tried to make my way around. All around are "tasting" stations where you can sample some of their foods. The first one I happened to meet was Pure Sky Farms where I got to sample some arugula. They grow locally and I learned that they are in the process of opening up a location under the Liberty Bridge on East Carson St sometime in the near future. It has been a long time since I visited Whole Foods in East Liberty but I remembered that they primarily sell organic food as well as premium beauty items. The meat aisle served the freshest I had ever seen including a butcher's area. All the samples I tried were very good but keep in mind you are paying for this quality. When you go around the perimeter of the store you will encounter dairy, breads, pastries and even a section where they sell local gifts. I recognized my Tee I had purchased last week from Commonwealth Press and was told that they are one of the suppliers but this Tee was made out of some sort of organic material. Note it was the same price as what I paid for mine last week. Honestly no one will know the difference! Near the produce section is a standalone coffee, tea, and juice bar called "Good Neighbor." I did not stop here since I had seen similar setups in other major grocery chains. While visiting the bread section I learned that some are made in house and the others are supplied by Mediterra bakery in Robinson Twp. Since I'm a fan of Mediterra and have been there previously I ordered a cranberry walnut bread from Whole Foods to freeze and try. Continuing on from the bread and baked goods area I came across stands that sell charcuterie, pizza, and stacked sandwiches. Across from it are 4 bars, one being a salad bar and the others various foods you can take out. Cost is $8.99 per pound. Near the pub is a complete selection of wine and beers and growlers for purchase What I was disappointed with was when I tried to maneuver through the aisles they are so narrow and packed to the brim with groceries. I am taking into consideration that this is opening day but I don't see it getting any better once the initial crowds wear off. Don't look for ethnic foods here. If you want that then head over to the Market District near Village Square. They have a similar style layout and I'm sure this place will go head to head with them. Part two. 1788 Pub. Yes they built a tiny eatery and bar within this complex. Since this is their only location I decided to try their food for lunch. It is set up at a right angle to the general lounging and eating area. They serve lunch and dinner M-Sat and on Sun they have a weekend brunch. For lunch you could have anything from half shell oysters, steamed mussels, purple cabbage, pierogies,to catfish, chicken and NY strip. It is counter service but you order at the bar. There you can get signature cocktails and wine by the glass. Since I had a medical apt following this visit I didn't want to have a bevvie but wanted a store tea. I was told that I would have to purchase that first through the regular checkout area and then I could bring it in to drink when I placed my order. So I went to pay for the few items I bought and was told I had the wrong cart! It's a standard grocery store cart and since I was using express checkout I was told I needed a mini cart but they gave me a carry one. Joy! Back to 1788 Pub I went with my purchases and ordered the tempura fried catfish which comes with spicy sauce, kale, and turmeric pickles. After I placed my order I was given a light buzzer which you all use while you're waiting for your food or a table. The lady I was chatting with regarding the spicy sauce was kind enough to bring my meal to me. With the exception of the NY strip steak which is $22.00 expect to pay at least $12.00 for your food not including cocktails. Brunch prices follow suit. My meal was okay but filing enough. I though the sauce was too spicy for me so they brought me a mayo sauce that worked better. I would say the food was average for me but prepared well. Next time I visit I'll try one of those food stations they have outside. Please note they don't list the price of these stations, I had to ask for it so keep that in mind when you wish to dine here. Depending upon weight you can pay a fortune. Other than that this is just the third of the Whole Foods chain. Good food, high prices read more

What an amazing Whole Foods experience! The new South Hills plaza (across from South Hills Village mall) is a beautiful additions looks like they anticipate bringing several more store fronts in. Parking scores a 10/10. It is spacious and plenty of room to pull in and out of the lot unlike the East Liberty location. This location has a huge out door seating area perfect for a sunny day. Inside the store is beautiful organized complete with some special areas such as serve yourself home made pasta, fresh pressed juices and a matcha bar. Today I picked up my usual items as I was there more to look around. I will be back to shop the wife arrange of wines and beers they have near the pre-made food section. It's the perfect space for lunch or dinner! read more

Been here quite often ever since it's opened so I decided that it's only right to give my thoughts on it! The store is very clean & very spacious compared to the one in East Liberty. If you have time and go there on one of the weekdays like me, you'll probably find a parking spot on the main level. If not there's a big parking lot on the lower level. I've been there on a Sunday early afternoon and the parking was an absolute nightmare. Just by making a turn to the store was already bad enough that day. Never again. Just like many of the reviewers have already said, I love the juice/smoothie bar right when you walked in and their meat department is super fresh as well. Overall I'm happy we finally have a Whole Foods on the South Hills area, we definitely needed one for a long time! read more

Pittsburgh finally has a Whole Foods worthy of the phrase "City of Champions"! I had heard that this Whole Foods had finally opened about being under construction for what seemed like several years. I was in the area so I decided to stop by. The worst thing about the visit was the parking lot...it's a complete mad house! They definitely under estimated the footprint for this store, especially after this area has been CRAVING a Whole Foods for so long. But then... you walk inside into this beautiful, airy, window-filled building. Yes, it's basically a giant warehouse, but this giant warehouse has floor to ceiling windows, an abundance of fresh food to go, a pasta, and even a sushi bar...rivaling those in New York City. While in the store I was transported back to Columbus Circle, brimming with excitement to check out all my favorite items. The more explored, the more I couldn't wait to plan my next visit. Need a specialty item? Check. Looking for a special dinner to go with dinner? Check. How about some freshly rolled sushi on your next date night? Check check. Employees were very friendly. This is a very good grocery store. Built new in 2017, it's fresh and clean inside. It's also well lighted, and the layout is not too crowded (i.e., there's room to walk, for two shoppers pushing carts to pass, etc.). While this chain has a reputation for being expensive, real comparison shopping in my area shows that's not really the case. Yes, if you pick organic, non-GMO products (and there are lots here), yes, they will cost more than non-organic foods. But like-for-like, While Foods is competitive. Further, I find the meats here to be WAY better looking than those at our big, chain grocery store (Giant Eagle). Ground beef is less here than at Giant Eagle. I've not tried their hot foods yet, but their pizza-by-the-slice looks great. I'll have to get a slice next time. read more

The assistant manager accosted me in the store for properly wearing a face shield which 100% complies with the PA mask mandates. Per the order "A "face covering" can be made of a variety of synthetic or natural fabrics, including cotton, silk, or linen, and, for the purposes of the order, can include a plastic face shield that covers the nose and mouth." My husband and I went to this market today. It is clean with a nice selection of produce. The employees we encountered were friendly and helpful. My only complaint was that they did not have a salad bar. We were in the Whole Food store in Lexington, Kentucky, and they had an enormous salad bar. This store is so disappointing. I didn't even want to give it one star. Bought a 5 lb Chuck roast from the butcher and after cooking it I realize it's mostly all fat. And the sale price was 3.99 a lb. Bought flavored wings and had to add my own flavoring to them. They were small and had a taste I didn't like. Bought a choc. Cake and it wasn't fresh at all. Their brand of bread is awful. So steal and breaks apart. Never again for this store. This is the most overpriced store to by groceries in. What a waste of 110.00 dollars that one could spend for food. read more

Every-time I shop here the employees are unpleasant and have attitudes that come across unwilling to assist as if the things I am asking are inconvenient. It is really disappointing and I dread when I have to stop here for a meal before I go to work because I leave feeling like a nuisance. read more

I was craving something light and decided I was in the mood for some sushi after walking around looking at the options. I got a spicy shrimp roll and a chocolate cream desert. To start with the roll I guess it's what you would expect from a chain establishment. There was two people on sight preparing everything and they had a motto saying "made today served today" but it didn't taste the freshest. It did have a small crunch and putting more soy sauce did make it taste better but I don't think I'll be having that again. As for the chocolate it was very rich, fluffy and creamy. The shell it's self was hard and had a great snap to it. I would recommend trying it to a friend. read more

Came here to grab breakfast after exercising. Their smoothie bowls are delicious! I had the acai bowl, which had peanut butter and acai smoothie with banana, granola, and blueberries on top. It was delicious and very reasonably priced at $7. The store is also huge and has a great selection of everything. I am a fan of their hot foods section and cheese selection as well. read more

Beautiful store, adequate parking, large selection of whole delicious foods. They have a nice cafe with sushi and beer and hot yummy foods and a rather large selection of wines. The layout of the store is kind of confusing, but it works. The produce at Whole Foods, in general, is one of the reasons why I am a repeat customer.. it's always so fresh and the selection is unbeatable from organic to locally grown, they got it all. This location is awesome overall- I am a more frequent customer to the East Liberty location because it's closer to my work, but I do enjoy coming here when I'm in the South Hills. read more
