This is really the only place that accepts injured birds in the area. Although I don't agree with the ease at which they consider euthanasia, they do more than any of us can and don't require a fee for giving up an animal. They do good work & have a solid structure with physical therapy & rehabilitation, refamiliarization with the outdoors (aviary), and then local release.

Arthur the chicken we rescued on the streets of Harlem

On one of our walks with our rescue pup Cleo, Jennifer and I came across a small chicken with malformed feet from being held in a shoe box cage it's entire life. She must have escaped slaughter or jumped off one of the halal trucks and we found her as she was shivering in a pile of snow, pecking away at road salt obviously starving and afraid. Bending over with a glove (to prevent infection) she allowed me to hold her, pet her and was an incredibly sweet, affectionate and loving creature. It's a shame what humans do to animals in the name of their taste buds. Anyhow, we immediately took her home, fed her oats and water and warmed her up before taking her to the Wild Bird Fund. I had passed by several times, heard multiple accounts from fellow vegans about taking injured pigeons and other birds here for free rehab and placement but had never gone in. When I walked in there was a flurry of movement! Beautiful beings that were once injured or are currently on their way to recovery flocked the floors and flooded staff and visitors with love and entertainment as they waddled around shaking their little booties or brushing up against your legs. The staff was very friendly and you could tell every one of them is there because it is where they want to be and what they want to do. We dropped off the baby chicken, henceforth known as "Arthur" as per Jenn, and made a donation. The staff will provide care and rehab, surgery if needed for her feet, and then place her in a sanctuary. Go vegan; Save the planet; Save lives. ;)

    RIP sweet bird

This place unnecessarily euthanizes birds (presuming more so with common birds). I found an injured pigeon with a missing tail and fractured leg. I cared for him for a few days and he was quite energized with a strong appetite but decided to take him to the WBF as I thought he would be miserable living in a box for a month while the tail grows back. Prior to my arrival, WBF encouraged me to bring him in and assured me that they would care for him with such injuries. When I brought him in, a dismissive and rude old blondish woman aggressively took the bag, without a proper discussion or a sign of compassion. I was concerned and suggested that I care of him, but she said they can't return the bird to me once in their possession. Of course, when I followed up several days later, they informed me that the pigeon was euthanized as the fracture was close to the joint and is more difficult to heal (it wasn't even broken!). I then spoke to an independent vet, and they confirmed that this type of fracture would heal successfully with a cast. I rehabilitated several birds and have grown quite attached to this one. Be ware and make an informed decision.

There was never any pressure and I was told that if for any reason I was not happy with my pup, they would take her back to foster and rehome. Sadie traveled via carry on luggage on her flight from Puerto Rico to FLL, carried by a volunteer angel (thank you!). Beth came with me to the airport and was so incredibly supportive and kind. From the moment Sadie popped her head out of the carrier, tail wagging, I knew that everything Toni/Beth told me about Sadie was spot on. It's been 1 week since I got Sadie and I could not be more thrilled with Sadie. I'm still chatting with Beth from time to time, sharing happy experiences and getting great advice on various new dog owner questions. She is a mensch! If you are apprehensive about the SFTH adoption process, I hope my review is informative for you. Now that Sadie is part of my life, I am grateful and appreciative of the work Toni, Beth and their team do. I highly recommend SFTH if you are considering a rescue.

He keeps in frequent touch with us and helps ensure that our kittens stay healthy, up-to-date with their vaccinations and de-worming medicine. We could not have asked for a more supportive rescue director, and most importantly, it is apparent that Des truly loves cats, especially those in his care. I feel that commenting on V C.'s review is necessary because our experience stands in sharp contrast to her's. My partner and I also work long hours, and we disclosed this during the adoption process. Needless to say, Des treated us courteously and respectfully. He was happy to discuss with us the best methods for caring for kittens despite working outside the home for the majority of the day. So, had V C. perhaps explained her profession and its time commitment to Des, I am confident that her experience would have been vastly different.

She's a small black bundle of love who has quickly become the heart of my apartment. When I first met her, Koka was a bit shy and timid, but with a little patience and love she's completely come out of her shell. She now goes potty outside, plays fetch, sits on command, and absolutely loves playing with her toys. She's affectionate, kind, and brings so much joy to my life every day. I first saw her on Muddy Paws' Facebook page and instantly fell in love. When I went to meet her at their clean and welcoming HQ, I was so impressed by how organized and caring everyone was. Manesha, her foster, did a fantastic job introducing me to Koka and sharing all the details about her personality and routine. Racheal, the founder, personally walked me through the adoption paperwork -- she was knowledgeable, kind, and completely transparent about the process. It's clear that Muddy Paws Rescue truly cares about every dog and every adopter. They made the entire experience smooth, warm, and deeply meaningful. I would highly recommend Muddy Paws Rescue to anyone thinking about adopting and saving a life. Koka and I are both so grateful!

NDLB is an incredible 501(c) (3) non-profit and their global mission of rescuing dogs and cats from immense suffering and complete abandonment, along with their exceptional care and concern for each survivor (no matter the gravity of each animal's injuries), is nothing short of outstanding. The dog we happened to adopt is a Japanese Akita Inu and happens to go by the name Romeo because he happened to be saved from slaughter on Valentine's Day (on February 14, 2020). The founder of NDLB , Jeff Beri, and his crew actually risked their lives twice to save our dog. Once (due to the strict Covid-19 Restrictions in China at that time and a second time to challenge the people who were about to slaughter him). I personally found all of the NDLB staff I interfaced with during the adoption process very personable and easy to connect with. More importantly, I found the staff demonstrated great care and concern for their animals throughout the adoption process. While waiting for Romeo's freedom flight to New York, we received multiple videos and photo's along with ongoing communication from the NDLB Chinese staff who were with him daily. The New York staff made sure I (along with my husband), understood all the possible challenges that came with adopting a dog from overseas and wanted to make sure we were up for this type of challenge. All I can say is Romeo has completely changed our family's life. Our family over the years has had three dogs. Romeo was our first overseas adoption, by far, he is the most considerate dog we have ever had the pleasure of owning, and is always looking out for our well-being. One last positive has been, over the past months, being able to maintain on going contact with Romeo's team in China, and being able to send photos and videos of him here having all sorts of fun in the USA. (See Romeo enjoying sunbathing below).
