Cheesecake is 10 years old and had never been neutered. The Vet team at Muddypaws are terrific! Cheesy kept getting UTIs because his prostate gland was inflamed. He went on antibiotics several times and we had to reschedule his procedure 3 times! Dr. Miller was great! He understood and accommodated our situation. Dr. Miller neutered Cheesecake on 11/13. Hello Yelpers, I recently adopted a sweet little Chihuahua mix named Savannah (now Koka) from Muddy Paws Rescue, and I couldn't be happier! She's a small black bundle of love who has quickly become the heart of my apartment. Disappointed by Poor Communication and Dismissive Response I'm sure many people have had great experiences fostering or adopting through this rescue, and I don't doubt that they're helping animals in need. But my experience left me deeply disappointed--and after reading through other reviews, I see I'm not alone. The communication throughout the process was poor and at times evasive. When I asked specific, reasonable questions about a dog I was considering fostering--questions about behavior, temperament, and needs--I was met with vague or indirect answers. That kind of avoidance is frustrating, especially when you're trying to make an informed and responsible decision. I was also told I'd need to travel from Washington Heights to New Jersey to pick up the dog, crate, and supplies, with zero discussion about meeting halfway or working out a more reasonable arrangement. It was just assumed I'd make the trip, no questions asked. After I decided not to move forward with the foster, I received a message saying my account would be archived and I should look into other fostering agencies because I "wasn't a good fit." The kicker? They also mentioned that all the information I needed was on their website--as if that replaces a basic, respectful conversation. If your process relies on fosters reading every single page on a website instead of having a real phone call to answer questions and ensure a mutual fit, it starts to feel more like you're trying to quickly place dogs rather than thoughtfully vet and support your fosters. I've since read many other reviews and complaints--some might be unrealistic, sure--but many seem valid and echo the same patterns I experienced. There is clearly something worth addressing in the way this organization handles communication and expectations. As a first time dog owner, adopting can feel frustratingly like applying for a job. In order to get one, you have to have experience. But how do you get the experience if nobody will give you a chance?! Thankfully, Muddy Paws was fully understanding of my situation. As long as you're conscientious and ready to do your research, you won't be excluded. After submitting an application, I heard back fairly quick about scheduling a phone interview. The interview lasted about 30 minutes and she took good notes to make sure they knew what kind of dog would best suit me. Within a day, I received an email saying I was an approved adopter! Here's where the real challenge starts -- checking the website as often as possible so you can be the first to email about a pup. Shockingly, it only took me two-three weeks before I saw my guy. It was about noon on a workday and I happened to refresh the page and see a new doggo. They're constantly adding new pups so check back all day! I had previously emailed about five or six dogs, but was either too slow or was told the dog wasn't a good fit for my lifestyle. The adoption process for Marcel was great. We did a zoom with the foster and I got to ask as many questions as I wanted. Afterwards, I received his full medical history and a bunch of great info about how to prepare for his arrival. Their foster-based adoption program, as it includes detailed information about the behavior, temperament, and training of each available dog, provided by those who have been fostering the dog in their home, gives anyone looking to adopt more information about each individual dog than any other type of adoption program would be in a position to offer. In addition, we are particularly impressed and grateful for the expert professional training Muddy Paws paid for and provided to our wonderful adopted dog,"Axle," before we "met" him, to overcome the effects of abuse he must have suffered before coming to Muddy Paws. This made it possible for us to adopt him and probably saved his life. I'm awarding four stars rather than five in the hope that the set-up for communicating with prospective adopters might be improved. Muddy Paws' first-come-first-served policy is as it should be, but their current software doesn't enable people viewing the photos and descriptions of adoptable dogs to know whether any given dog has been spoken for, has a wait-list of interested adopters, or where anyone interested might stand if they added their name to such a list. It's too easy, especially (but not only) for young children, to fall in love with a dog based on the descriptions and wonderful photos, only to have their hearts broken. The days spent waiting to learn if you can adopt a dog in which you express interest can take the better part of a week, which can be trying. Software that automatically displays in real time the number of people, if any, who have expressed interest in a given dog would be a great help. The chance to speak directly by phone with the incredible foster "parents" who had been caring for the dog we adopted was extremely helpful in facilitating both our decision to adopt "Axle" and our efforts to make the transition as easy as possible for him. But instead of enabling direct phone communication with foster care-givers, especially when the dog involved has not been generating a burdonsome number of queries, Mudddy Paws normally asks that questions about specific dogs be handled by email. Before we chose "Axle" we emailed questions about another dog on a Thursday, received an email reply the following Tuesday, then sent follow-up questions that day, and waited until the following week for a response, all the time wondering if someone else would adopt the dog while we waited for replies. We respect that Muddy Paws is largely staffed by over-worked volunteers, but it would have taken forever to get all the invaluable information we received about "Axle" had we been relying on emails to and from staff who themselves were relying for answers on emails from foster "parents." I had great experience adopting my dog Jackson through Muddy Paws Rescue. I first met Jackson at a Saturday adoption event and he definitely took a shine to me. I told several volunteers that I would be adopting him soon, but I didn't realize quite how soon. I wanted my husband and our previously adopted dog, Calamity, to meet Jackson before making a commitment, so we all went to another adoption event that Thursday for full family introductions. Jackson and Calamity started playing immediately and we knew they would be fast friends. The Muddy Paws volunteers walked us through all of the adoption paperwork and gave us some great recommendations on how to welcome Jackson into our home. This rescue though I realize is mostly volunteers took four weeks to get back to me then turned down my application to foster I have several years of fostering experience including volunteering as an intake adoption coordinator for Nebraska Border Collie Rescue, and Volunteer at Towne and Country Humane Society Papilion I believe they were just trying to get rid of me I was only trying to help an acquaintance of mine to rehome her dog that is a senior dog with anxiety. A very biased organization. Let me start by stating that I grew up rescuing and fostering animals. So here's my story: and these are the facts for May 2018 incident. 1. I fostered a 8 week pittbull mix 2. Because it displayed aggressive behavior I hired a private trainer. This is in the best interest of the puppy to be trained how to play properly and teach a pup at a young age to understand basic commands. 3. I voiced the concern to my foster buddy Asa and Jenna. This was a conversation, and they just dispelled my concerns. These girls are in their 20s mind you, never met the puppy, aren't a vet or a professional. Fast forward, Puppy gets adopted. I then receive an email stating that my viewpoint where an adopter should have the financial means to take care of a dog is unimportant. Hell, dogs are like human beings. They require food, vet appointments, shots, surgeries. You know like a regular human being needs. Fair viewpoint right? their program director Katie also felt that I should have not brought up the fact that the puppy displays aggressive behavior due to the pittbull myth. Now for the people out there who don't know; there are many myths out there such as the pittbull behavior and even black dog syndrome. Yes we all know that puppies are raised to be the way they are, HOWEVER, the parents disposition plays a huge part. These are everyday topics you read on animal informational websites, are discussed by professional dog trainers and vets. So what's wrong? It wasn't an argument, it wasn't hostile, it was literally words that were said without any emotions attached to it. So I then find out from the email I receive that MPR actually discourages you to be vocal. In fact they oppress it. Lastly there has been no training or discussion on what happens if someone you knew was interested in adopting. So if someone who is a personal friend comes by and sees the puppy and wants to adopt, I direct them to the website and apply online. Ofcourse as a friend I will expedite the process as much as I can. Nothing complicated there. All of the above is pretty normal so far right? No. Rather I get an email from the program director rejecting my application to be a volunteer when I couldn't foster due to my schedule. No email, no text, nothing to discuss the situation on how they came to this decision. Just a nice break up email, like we are in high school. So another Fact: Muddy Paws will discriminate and be oppressive if your opinions or even simple observations don't align with theirs. They self-select and the organization is run by unprofessional and untrained workers. At this point I'm clearly miffed. I've gone above and beyond on all of my fosters. Best food, treatment, care, and private training. Everyone who wants to help and volunteer for animals are all people who are good at heart, right? So what kind of organization goes above and beyond to seclude a person who wants to help? What true non-profit organization picks and chooses? They seclude if they don't like the way you breathe. The whole situation is stupid and immature if you ask me. It's like being in high school all over again. They made it clear that they value their best interest over the animals. If they don't like a foster they'd put a dog in a cage first. They've been reported to PIX news 11 and BBB. By accusing me Of being breed biased makes them a bigot themselves. read more

Ah... Muddy Paws... How I wish we had never crossed paths. Let's start with some direct quotes from the report we got about the dog we ended up adopting: "She is really gentle and curious but tends to be wary of men for some reason. She doesn't whine/growl/bite/bark and is always super excited to see us." "very well behaved" "Because of her gentle disposition, we think she would be the perfect family pet" So we got said dog.... After two days with us it was very clear that we either got the wrong dog, they lied to us or they have no idea what they are doing. She has severe aggression issues with people and dogs. She tried to bite multiple people within days of being with us. We've had her for 4 months and have worked with 4 different trainers to try to solve her issues and despite multiple thousands of dollars spent and a lot of time and effort on our part nothing has worked. We are now left with the only recommendation of sending her to an expensive board and train program. It could be anywhere upwards of $4,000 and likely more than that because of the severity of her behavior issues. In all our email exchanges, Muddy Paws claimed that they were aware of her behavior issues. So we are still left wondering if they lied to us on purpose or didn't want to admit their incompetence. Do yourself a favor, stay away from them and find a better organization to adopt from or buy a dog from a responsible breeder. I wish I had known more about the rescue world before this experience. Don't let them fool you, there is a reason why their adoption process is easier than other rescue's. There are a lot of resources and trainers out there who can help you better understand what a responsible rescue really looks like and how to test a dog's temperament. When I went to meet the pup I adopted and walked her around, I met two other people who had adopted their dog through Muddy Paws and couldn't say enough good things. Gemma, who I adopted, is one of the sweetest pups I've ever met! She was already house trained, and leash and crate trained. She was fixed and microchipped too. They had him in a foster home, so they set up an in-person meetup with us at the Foster's place, gave the Foster the power to let us pay and sign papers right there (we had already gone through a vetting process), and made the process painless! PLUS I had the founder's number and texted her because Koda already developed Kennel Cough and needed antibiotics before we even adopted him, but the Foster didn't know what kennel cough looked like so he wasn't treated yet. Rachael actually met up with us in Connecticut to give us free antibiotics (with directions) for Koda! It was such a help, since we had literally just adopted him a couple days previously. Our experience with Muddy Paws has been beyond terrible. Things started out great - we submitted our application, had our interview, and met our dog virtually. One challenge with the organization is the extreme time pressure placed on things - we were forced to say yes/no to adopting the dog within minutes of the interview, and were then told we had 24 hours to pick her up. We were unable to visit the dog in person due to covid protocols (even outside). We made them aware of our family, including two young children. We were given detailed personality of the dog, which proved very inaccurate. Within 3 hours of being in our home, the dog had drawn blood with bites and our two children would not leave their rooms for fear of the dog. Within 3 hours of adopting her we contacted both the foster family and muddy paws to take her back, noting that we are not an appropriate or safe home for the pet. Muddy Paws has been very slow to respond / address our concerns - if we were a single couple I'd understand, but ultimately this is not a safe situation for our children and they seem like they could care less about this. The prior foster family refused to take the dog back (I assume they realized there were issues they hid from us). I've lived with dogs my whole life - ultimately we trusted that the dog we were matched with would be safe for children as Muddy paws and the foster family suggested, but this has not been the case. Now we are stuck with a dog that we cannot care for, with no ability to return her and no recourse to find another home for her. I would highly suggest never adopting or fostering a dog from Muddy Paws especially if you have young children. We are posting this to warn other families and also in the hope that Muddy Paws will contact us so we can resolve this issue. read more

When I started volunteering with Muddy Paws 2 years ago, I signed up without knowing anybody - I just knew I wanted to work with dogs. Reached out to them several times to attempt to adopt a dog that had been available for weeks. And would not be able to make the Saturday event so emailed several times to say we would gladly pick up the pup from the fosters home or would pay for whatever supplies the foster may need to hold the pup until we could make it to the event the following Saturday. Reached out via several emails as well as contacted via social media only to be told basically to stop messaging them they would get to us when they could. Whicb their we site says 1-3 days but this all happened over 8-9 days no response. With all that being said the dog we had hoped for is now adopted and all of thag without the common courtesy of saying "Hey we can't do that." or "it's mandatory to adopt at the event for immediate pick up" so we could make last minute effort or plans to be sure we were there. My bf and I adopted our dog Sadie, fka Sandy, from muddy paws in August 2018 as a part of their "clear the shelters" event. I had stalked her litter on their IG page, submitted an adoption application, but when I didn't hear back after a week, we just went down to the adoption event early. Our adoption counselor was fantastic, and Sadie has been an angel. I seriously couldn't ask for a better dog. The only suggestion I have is that it would've been nice if my adoption application had been approved beforehand; I think it would've made the day less stressful. But all's well that ends well. I also never anticipated the community she would open us up to. We ended up connecting with all 10 of Sadie's siblings on Instagram and met up for a reunion! It's been such a great experience, we're looking at adopting another pup from muddy paws Adopt, don't shop!! read more

I am writing this as a reply to the company. It was mentioned that they are still waiting for me to reply to them about our last communication in which I was told that these are the options for my dog: rehoming him ourselves, trying to get assistance from another adoption agency in rehoming/surrendering - which was told to me as being "very difficult", and I was also informed that Muddy Paws did not have a foster placement for our dog at the time of the conversation, and that if I were to surrender the dog back to them when they have someone available, the "most likely outcome would be euthanasia". I have not replied because it did not seem like there was any other viable option other than rehoming him ourselves, which has not been successful as my dog, Coby, is on several expensive medications and is having ongoing health issues, as I mentioned in my original review. When we first got Coby, he was a handful and we are first time dog parents, so we did inquire about surrendering him. However, we warmed up to him and chose not to to go through with that, and I am incredibly glad that we did not surrender him back, because he would have the same health and behavioral issues with another owner, and would have been surrendered again and "most likely euthanized". I also want to make sure that those perusing and contemplating adoption are aware of the experience we have had with this agency. The "help" we have been offered was a phone number to a behavioral assistance hotline. As stated in the company's reply, "We did review this dog's behavioral concerns, including some undesirable leash behavior that we had seen in foster care. From a medical perspective, this dog had been seen in the previous few weeks by a veterinarian, and another vet tech separately for a heartworm test. Neither of these professionals, nor his foster, saw any medical concerns." - Not at any time during our sit down with the adoption counselor was this "undesirable" leash behavior mentioned, not to me, and not to my partner, and it was certainly not included in any of his medical or adoption paperwork. This would have been very important for us to know as we would not have gone through with the adoption. The only thing told to us was that our dog is "High energy", which has nothing to do with leash reactivity or "undesirable leash behavior". With regards to his intestinal issues (bacteria, parasites and severe food allergies), anyone who has spent at least one day with our dog would know he has issues because he has not had one solid stool since the day we adopted him, not one. No fecal test was performed according to the medical paperwork; the only test performed was heartworm. Since he has been having issues with this stool since day one, one can conclude that his issues were either not treated, inappropriately treated, and absolutely not resolved by the time he was up for adoption. Also, just to give you a timeline, Coby came to Muddy Paws what looks like to be August 30th, 2019, and was up for adoption and adopted by us on by September 8th, 2019, if the paperwork that was give to us was accurate. If our dog was having issues with his stool; it would be impossible not to notice it, and 8 days is definitely enough time to notice this issue, but definitely not enough time to treat is, according to our vet. I hope that information was enough to clear up any questions. As I mentioned, we have spent thousands of dollars in the four months we've had Coby and although I know there is an inherent risk in any adoption, the lack of support, and giving limited options as well as throwing around the word "euthanasia" definitely does not give me trust in working with this agency. I hope other people have had better experiences with Muddy Paws; I just think it would be important for prospective adopters to know situations like mine are possible too. Recommend this organization to all my friends and family. I am so thankful for the team members helping me out thru the adoption process. It took me about 6months to find our perfect puppy, and we couldn't be happier with our choice. I am a volunteer and donor for Muddy Paws Rescue, and just wanted to share a bit about my experience which might help others when choosing a non-profit dog rescue to adopt, foster, or volunteer with. The volunteer experience has been really rewarding, and every staff and volunteer I've met has been very friendly and helpful. I have tried to apply to volunteer with 3 other rescues/shelters, but they often don't respond to applications, or they just don't offer a lot of hands-on opportunities/events where you can volunteer with the dogs. Muddy Paws usually has 1-2 adoption events every weekend, which has been great for my schedule. Besides my time, I also choose to donate to Muddy Paws Rescue, because I've seen firsthand how much work everyone (both staff and volunteers) put in to save as many dogs as possible, and to place dogs in the best homes possible. The volunteers at adoption events, and the volunteers who do administrative things behind the scenes have always been responsive. Whenever I've had any questions or concerns, it's always been heard and addressed right away. I personally have only met the most dedicated people involved with the rescue (whether it's staff, foster volunteers, adoptions volunteers, or event volunteers), and am so glad to have found Muddy Paws Rescue. When I move into a dog-friendly apt, I'll definitely become a Muddy Paws foster and adopter as well! read more
