Yelp deleted my honest review and I am reposting it and will continue to do so. This happened in 2024. This is a very long story, but I will make it short. I adopted a cat in May. They told me the cat had a clean bill of health. After two weeks and almost $1000.00 in vet bills, I found out she had a chronic skin condition. The vet told me there was no way they couldn't have known when she had huge patches of fur missing from her tummy area. Next, they said I would receive a refund of the cat carrier and adoption fee (I did not request to have the adoption fee refunded-they offered). It is now September, and after being assured twice that "the check was in the mail," I still haven't received it. I am no longer expecting to. I was misled, if not outright lied to, by this organization once again. I used to donate to the ASPCA routinely and receive their calendars -this will no longer be the case. I'll give to other shelters that I feel are more trustworthy and honest in their communications. The only reason for two stars instead of one is because she was a very cute cat. read more

I went to 424 East 92nd Street in Manhattan today with 2 bags of dog toys that I purchased in Pelham Parkway and found that there is NO "EVENT". I came in from the Bronx and went through a nightmare. They do not allow you to see any dogs at this site. They Mandate that if you want to see a dog you need to adopt Today and THEY pick the dog for you. ARE THEY KIDDING? Security has a lady come out to talk to me and she said I might see the dogs at 326 East 110th Street. We went to That site and I took the toys with me. They said there is No event and they have no idea that there is Anything special about the dates. If I want to see the dogs I need to go to 109th Street. More annoyed, I took the bags of toys with me. The lady opened the secured door at 109th Street and asked what we needed. REALLY?? No event. We had to scan a code and wait Outside in the cold to get in until I got fed up and rang the bell again and again. They let us in and asked which dog I want to adopt. I demanded to see the dogs. I would Not adopt Any dog that someone else picks for me -- based on what they put us through today. The site indicated there were hundreds of dogs. We only saw 10 - 12. One was chewing on his paw, poop right next to him. The one I wanted to see at first looked ok and when I went back to his "room" it was a poop and other stuff mess. I wanted to see that dog but they said he was Just adopted. Really? They told me I could drop off the toy donations back at 110th Street. Done -- plus I managed to get a receipt. The Humane Society in New Rochelle also refused ro allow us in to see the dogs. POINT -- If I cannot experience the dogs I will not want to adopt. Nor will I continue to Donate. These organizations make it SO DIFFICULT to view the pets that people will not go through this craziness of poor process. I will no longer donate to such organizations as the ASPCA or the Humane Society of New York or bring bags of toys, blankets, dishes, towels until they turn back to pre-COVID process where people can pick their own pets. read more

My experience with the ASPCA was an utter abomination. On Friday 12/16/2022 "Milkshake" was released to me as a fast-track foster. He was intended to be an adoption, but because of a potential ear surgery that he required, we had to foster until after the shelter vet performed the second surgery. Upon meeting the behavior team, they mentioned in passing that he had grabbed at a person's pant leg during a walk and also had canine leash reactivity. This did not disuade them from releasing him to me. They sent me home with food, toys, and helped lead him into our Lyft ride home. It did not disuade me from taking him as I have been adopting dogs with behavioral issues for decades and am a certified trainer specializing in behavior. As agreed, I returned with Milkshake to the shelter Sunday evening for his medical evaluation. I emailed prior to let them know that I did not believe a second surgery was necessary. With supervision and care the surgical site was no longer bleeding, but I would defer to the vet. Upon meeting with ASPCA personnel, I stated that unless it was absolutely medically necessary it was not in Milkshake's best interest to remain overnight. I was told he must stay. I asked that due to his known reactivity to please not walk him (Manhattan is too stimulating), and if they must, please use a head harness (gentle leader) and allow him to carry a tennis ball. My feed back was disregarded. I was informed the following day that he was involved in an "incident" and the person required medical attention. How did this happen you ask? Sheer negligence. After two days of being managed by the Director of Foster Relations (Eileen Hanavan), I was informed by the Senior Manager of Behavior (Adi Hovav) that Milkshake would be humanely euthanized due to the lack of warning signals and the severity of the incident. Let's examine this for a moment: 1. The shelter readily released a dog that had already exhibited canine and human reactivity to me on Friday. 2. The shelter allowed the leash reactive dog to be walked by an "experienced handler" (volunteer) on a busy Manhattan street. 3. I was told that the dog was being walked on the left side of the handler, but yet had enough freedom that he was able to cross in front and attack a person on the right. 4. The shelter disregarded my feedback regarding proper safety and handling of the dog 5. The dog had not displayed aggressive tendancies during his first few weeks in the shelter. This behavior surfaced after neuter surgery. It is not uncommon for a dog to display what are often temporary reactive tendencies soon after a neuter. Shelter stress can also manifest with reactivity issues that are resolved after the dog is removed from the environment, allowed to decompress, and is provided with proper behavior modification training. 6. The ASPCA was not open to discussing potential alternatives to euthanasia (e.g.; meds, rescues that specialize in behavioral issues, etc.) to allow the dog to decompress and potentially be rehabilitated. Conversely, their frustration with me escalated when I pleaded Milkshake's case and explained that I was simply trying to "be his voice" as their very famous motto asks us to do. It culminated in Adi Hovav telling me "the decision has been made, you have no voice". My heart goes out to the individual that sustained injury. It is a horrific, traumatic incident that was completely avoidable. My heart breaks for Milkshake who paid the ultimate price for human negligence and error. I fully recognize that we can not allow dogs to pose a danger to society. I also know first hand, that many of these dogs can be worked with and rehabilitated to become good canine citizens. Have we learned nothing from the Bad Newz Kennel/Michael Vick debacle? My assumption is that euthanization was the only option the ASPCA considered because of potential litigation from the victim. Euthanizing the animal just looks better in court. Any way you look at it, the ASPCA made grave errors in judgement. If the dog was deemed dangerous enough to euthanize due to unpredictability, why was he being walked on a front clip harness (no control if his head) after already lunging at someone days prior? What humans are being held accountable for this? Any? Milkshake died in vain, alone, and was then carted to the dump. RIP sweet boy. You mattered and I will never forget you! read more

I recently adopted a cat from here. It's been difficult to find a cat I connected with. I had applied for one cat and through a clerical error I was not able to adopt him. I had to choose another cat. My adoption counselor Kim was wonderful. I fell in love with another cat named Tatum. He's now Tater. He was not a happy cat in the shelter but Kim & I both felt like he had potential. A few days later he was home with me cuddling, purring & making biscuits. My point is the counselors really try to help you make a connection and with Covid restrictions it can be challenging. But they do it. These cats are loved and well taken care of. Sandy was sent here for an emergency surgery. They needed to unblock his urinary tract or he would die. He's only 4 years old so we weren't trying to have that happen to him. As soon as we got there from the Bronx ASPCA they took him right in. They kept him for 3 days and told us to come pick him up by days end. They did an excellent job with Sandy. When we left they only charged us $100.00. As opposed to the other place we took him to they wanted to charge me almost 4,000.00 that wasn't happening so this is why I love the ASPCA. They don't rob you without a gun. They sent him home with a bag full of urinary tract food and his meds for 10 days. NY ASPCA is hot garbage. I applied to adopt 2 dogs. Each of them are "on hold" to go to a partner shelter. This has gone on for weeks! So, instead of finding these poor dogs a home, they are holding them hostage so that some rescue can have them when they have room. This is wrong! It's cruel. ASPCA should be ashamed of themselves. The staff was great, they really let us take our time and meet many different kitties. When we saw our girl, she was in rough shape. She was feral from the Bronx and it looked like she had gotten attacked by some bigger animal because her back had a big bite. Poor girl. They took good care of her and we could tell they really wanted her to find a good home. Well, she chose us more than we chose her, and I just couldn't be more in love with this girl. The staff here are deeply caring and purely amazing. Came here on a Saturday looking to adopt an older cat or dog. We were able to see all the animals in the shelter (most of which were adopted earlier in the day since they had an event). The whole process from start to end was quite seamless despite it being somewhat busy. I was able to interact with the cat I wanted to adopt, Sid. As a first time pet owner, I wasn't sure if we were the right fit. He had been interacting with people all day and was quite tired so I couldn't exactly gauge how well we would get along. He stayed in the corner and seemed to want to sleep for the most part. There was this fun little quiz I got to take to see what kind of cat would best suit me and Sid matched exactly that! I decided to adopt him that same day with the backup of staff's good words on what he's like usually. It was only a few papers, chat with the vet about medical history/questions, and that was most of it. All I had to do was pay for the pet carrier ($35) because there isn't a pet fee for older pet. I was also provided with a voucher for a first vet visit (which covers up to $200 and must be used in the first 2 weeks of adoption), pet food, and all necessary documents. I had renamed Sid to Ser Pounce and they provided me with the necessary tag as well. Overall, the process of adopting couldn't be easier! Mobile Adoption Truck review: I can't sing their praises enough! If I were rich I would donate generously to this organization because they truly deserve it; the ASPCA does great work!! They help the under served community to be able to obtain pets and even help them care for their pets by providing affordable top quality veterinary care! After a HORRIBLE experience at North Shore Animal League (see previous review), the ASPCA restored my faith in pet shelters. The adoption truck was in Corona Queens on 10/23/21 at 11am and I was lucky enough to be the 2nd person on line! I got to the location at 9am to be sure, but since the weather was drizzly and cool there wasn't too many people and I could've arrived a bit later. There's was no place to park at the original location they advertised and ended parking down the block. When I saw the truck, I RAN following them around the block until they finally parked; I noticed my line mate who was lucky number 1 did the same! Lol The 2 staff were extremely nice and so patient! They didn't rush you to make a choice and let me interact with multiple cats before making my choice. I was lucky enough to adopt a pair of 4 month old kittens who were litter mates that came from a hoarding situation. I had previously completed their online adoption application which expedited my process. The $150 adoption fee is MORE than worth it! Way more affordable than other organizations like Brooklyn Animal Action. Also the animals are MUCH healthier than places like Sean Casey Animal Rescue, which was pretty shady (review coming soon). They provide temporary pet carriers if you don't have one and I got a little welcome home bag with the wet and dry food they had been eating. They even let me take home the little bed and blankets they were using to make their transition easier. However they were so well socialized and so outgoing, that they required exactly zero days to get acquainted to our home! Lol I was careful to choose kittens who were not shy and were playful when I interacted with them; also having a companion kitten made it much easier for them to be comfortable right away. The only very minor downside (if it can even be called that) is that they only had about 7-8 cats to choose from. So there's a good chance that folks at the back of the line probably went home empty handed, but at least they can try again at one of their other mobile adoption events. Another thing is, of course, there is a lot of waiting involved especially if you are not at the front of the line, but I promise you it's worth it! The positive experience and quality of the animals are unmatched! Pro tips: 1. Complete the online Adoption Application beforehand. 2. Go on a day the weather is not so great, the line will be much smaller! 3. Get there early and pay attention for the truck, they might have to park in a slightly different location. read more

My husband and I wanted to adopt a cat to keep us company when the other is at work and to help with unwanted guests. We didn't know what to expect, as we haven't adopted before. We were overjoyed by our experience. The sign in process was quick and easy. The volunteer that helped us was so kind and understanding. We filled out a questionnaire about our living conditions and our lifestyles but little did we know we were giving them information about the personality type of cat that would work the best with us. It felt like a magazine quiz but it was very cute and was helpful for both us and them. We got secret admirer. Then the volunteer began to show us around to all the available cats for adoption. We met Princa, who was in a office of one of the employees there, which they said was because it made her used to being around people. We then met a few other cats. My husband and I had a hard time deciding between two cats and we were led upstairs into the office again to meet her. The volunteer was patient with us and made sure not to rush us and give us tips to connect with the cats. We then decided on our Princa! And they provided us with everything we needed to set up a good environment for her. We had to purchase the litter box for $15 and buy the carrier for $35 but they gave us large amounts of litter and food and her towels and blankets she got used to. Overall it was a wonderful experience. The facility was much nicer than I was expecting and the staff blew me away. I would say to give your self a few hours, as it took us longer than expected (but that may have been due to our indecision.) I'm a proud, unabashed cat person, but my dreams of dying amidst a heap of cats and half-open cans of tuna kept getting deferred by my mother's pesky dander allergies. Most fortunately for me, my boyfriend likes watching cat Youtube videos on an endless loop as much as I do, so adopting was inevitable. Plus, I didn't feel like plunking down a few Benjamins at a breeder. The ASPCA is just a few blocks near our apartment, and open on Saturdays and Sundays. The process starts with filling out some paperwork to determine background and what you're looking for in a pet. The ASPCA doesn't appear to have the resources to carry out full-fledged background checks and at-home interviews as other places might, but they do ask the right questions and are honest at whether it's a good fit. For example, when I took a friend with two small children and a slightly allergic husband who was considering adoption, the interviewer (quite rightly) tried to subtly talk her out of it. I'm sure the most heartbreaking part of any day for the ASPCA volunteers is when someone returns a pet. After the interview, they'll take you up to meet the cats and dogs in person. Just know that if you're looking for a kitten, the summer months are the best, but even if you fall in love with a particular kitty with the big sad anime eyes and the most plaintive meow, you can't really reserve or hold them, and the turnover is still high. Anyway, we did the impossible and walked out of the adoption center without kitties in tow, but a week later, my boyfriend surprised me with these two furry demons - Panini and Thug. Still one of the happiest days of my life, and I was emitting incoherent squeaks a few days later. read more

After losing my cat of 9 years, I finally was able to stomach the idea of opening up to adopting a new kitten. I made sure to show up by 11am, completed the paperwork, showed proof of residence and met with my volunteer to walk through my survey results. It was a lot to just see all of the cats needing homes, but I'm so happy to see how comfortable they make it for them here. The family is nice, clean and people are actively looking for a new pet. When I told them that my old cat was a blackcat and a male, and I'd prefer to see similar again... they brought me to see the kittens. There were so many people there, but none were paying attention to the black ones. Before coming in and while waiting, I'd seen one that was the cutest, but wasn't sure he'd be there still. One look at my little guy from the website and I knew he was mine. He was outgoing and had a strong personality, and did not want to come to me at all, but I was smitten with him. I adopted him and was able to bring him home that same morning. It took awhile to get him to stop hiding and to come out, but now he's a firecracker full of love and sleeping on the bed next to me. I don't think he's had the best start in his life, but I aim to give him one moving forward. Black cats are two-thirds less likely to get adopted than white cats and only half as likely to be adopted as tabby cats in shelters. I witnessed people walking by the black kittens for all of the others, and as long as I'm alive.. I'll always adopt a black cat moving forward. They have the best personalities and are so sweet. I've since changed his name to Poe. In addition, the ASPCA deserves so many kudos for what they do. I paid $125 and he was neutered, had all of his shots, except one and has his microchip. They also sent us home with canned food and dried food, in addition a full folder of information and outline of resources available. I just wish that I could bring them all home. I adopted a male kitten, 8 Weeks old, and I named him, Orion. He's such a sweetheart. Some tips for those interested in adopting: Bring proof of address: There were people being turned away heartbroken because they did not have proof of residence. A letter from your landlord, lease or a bill with your name address will due. The facility offers carriers for purchase, rental, and a complimentary cardboard carrier is also offered. SO BLESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sometimes you just get REALLY lucky and last Friday I went to the ASPCA with a broken heart after putting my 9 yr old cat down and the volunteer, Katherine seemed to know exactly what to do. She was so kind, so patient ... after looking at a lot of cats I found my sweet little kitty, Beso. She asked me if I wanted to hold him and it was over in 30 sec, I was in love. Sweetest kitten EVER. Really social, smart, affectionate and is already bonding with my other 8 yr old male cat. The center is spotless and has a really good vibe. All the people I interacted with were super friendly and professional and you could tell they were genuine animal lovers. Even the security guard was especially kind! Can't say enough good things about the ASPCA. I feel so so blessed that I found such a precious little kitty -- he'll be 2 mo old tomorrow!! Adopting a pet in NYC during Covid times isn't easy or terribly affordable, but we were so impressed with the ease and speed of ASPCA's remote adoption process. A few days after submitting a questionnaire, I got a call from an adoption agent who discussed my preferences with me. Just an hour later, I got a call about a match. After meeting him via Zoom, we brought him home just a couple of days later. The ASPCA team really set us up well: they provided some food, bedding, toys, and a lot of very helpful general information about our new pet. We adopted two kittens from here last month and had a wonderful experience. The facility is very clean and organized. Despite going on a busy Saturday afternoon, we were paired with a volunteer, Muriel, immediately. Muriel was fantastic. She met our family (one adult who'd had a full menagerie of childhood pets, one adult who'd never had any pets, two rambunctious young kids) and steered us toward the animal companion(s) that would be the best match. I had gone in intending to adopt one mature female cat and left with two male kittens who are the perfect fit for our family. The shelter provided us with collars and name tags, a starter supply of food, and lots of literature. The entire process took about 1.5 hours. Adopted a 2 month old kitten Zenzi...now Sprinter...here on Cat Friday - which was far more fun than Black Friday shopping. On Black Friday - or as they call it Cat Friday, all adoption fees for cats were waived...which was an awesome deal (The $125 they normally charge to adopt a kitten also is a good deal, but I'll get to that later) We showed up around noon to a short line outside. They were letting people in 10 at a time to go upstairs and fill out paperwork to initiate the process. Once we did that, someone met with us and went over the questionnaire we filled out and checked our ID/proof of address, etc. After that, we were assigned someone (Her name was Brittany, I think) to take us to the kitten rooms. Because they were so busy people were limited to 10 minutes per room. A lot of the kittens in the first room were spoken for, so that didn't take long. The one cat I was interested in in that room wanted nothing to do with us, so we took that as a sign to move on to the next room. Once we got in the 2nd room...which at the time had a bunch of black kittens I was the heart eye emoji personified. Zenzi looked at us with his big eyes and stopped eating. I asked the girl to let him out and he IMMEDIATELY climbed on my boyfriend's shoulders and started licking his face. He licked my fingers and was purring loudly. SOLD. The girl pulled his card and we were then sent downstairs to finish the process and take him home. This is where the hold up really was. The room was backed up with people waiting to sign off on paperwork and take their furballs home - in the interim I believe the vet was giving them one last once over and the microchips were being programmed with the appropriate contact information. (Normally the $125 kitten adoption fee includes all age appropriate shots, spay/neuter, and microchipping - which is a deal in and of itself. On Black Friday it was all completely waived). About halfway through this process my boyfriend had to bail and go to work...which was fine, because the important part was over - picking our new family member :) (I knew to pack my patience and was well aware that this was a time consuming process based upon the news article I learned about this event from.) While we were waiting, a girl came around and took down information and choices for a free collar and ID tag. After sitting downstairs for about 2 hours I signed the adoption agreement, went over when the kitten was due for his next shots, feeding times/amounts, was given a few cans of the food he was being fed at the shelter, and picked out some treats/toys for our little boy, and 15 minutes later they brought him out in a carrier box. I opened it up to put the fuzzy blanket I brought with me (that was a favorite of a cat I used to have) and Zenzi immediately tried to snuggle with me...so affectionate. Too bad we had a walk over to Third Avenue and an express bus ride to the Bronx left to go :( 5 days later, Zenzi has been renamed Sprinter (because he sprints EVERYWHERE) and has snuggled the crap out of us routinely and stolen our hearts =^_^= I was very happy with the adoption process and would definitely return again for the next addition to our family when Sprinter grows up a bit. My experience at the ASPCA was great! I went on a Saturday morning right after they open at 11am with the intention of adopting a cat. The volunteer that was helping us was lovely - very knowledgeable and didn't put on any pressure as we were meeting the cats. Kittens are kept in a separate area than the grown cats and the dogs are in another area towards the back. We probably took about an hour meeting all of the cats before deciding who we were going to take home - my pretty black cat, Boo. She is over the age of three so there was no adoption fee. All animals are neutered, given shots and microchipped upon arrival to the shelter and you are given a voucher for a free checkup. I was also given a thick packet of information as well as a can of wet food and a bag of dry food that she had been eating at the shelter. I brought my own carrier, but they have carriers available for purchase/rent as well. When they were making Boo comfy in our carrier the volunteer made sure to include the pillowcase and toys from the condo that Boo had been staying in to make her transition even easier. Thanks ASPCA, for giving me a full-blown identity crisis. I was born a proud "dog person", totally believing everyone leans toward one or the other when it comes to furry friend preferences. A dog is a man's best friend, right? And what could truly compare to a wagging tail, fierce, protective loyalty, and the unwavering, unconditional, instantaneous love a dog provides every second you walk in the door? A cat. From ASPCA. The animals up for adoption here are incredible. They're very well-taken care of while they wait for an awesome person like you to give them a forever home (insert "donate here" button!). Adopting from this impeccably clean, well-organized facility is somewhat similar to dealing with a matchmaker (or "yenta" as my people say). Fill out a questionnaire, speak with an adoption counselor, and get some one-on-one time with a few potential candidates. You can even bring in your other "family members" (e.g., Feeny, my over-eager rescue terrier) to see if the relationship might work out well for everyone. (If only we could do that so soon with men, eh?) As a proud anti-cat-racist, I agreed to head straight to the all-black kitten room. Statistically, these kitties are the least popular, unfortunately. After initially falling for Stewey, who sadly had chronic stew-l problems, I met 8-month-old Gala (now Olive), and it was a purrrrfect match. After an adoption interview, we were able to purchase supplies from there (happily benefitting this wonderful agency), then take her home. A year later, Olive is a very well-adjusted, happy, healthy, cuddly, sweet little cat that never ceases to make me laugh with her aspiring-Olympian antics. Defying all of my pre-conceived "dog person" judgements, she has proven to be extremely loving and social and couldn't bite or scratch anything if she wanted to. ASPCA truly helped me find my "match" in a cat, and I couldn't recommend a place for animal adoption more highly. Yep, I truly love cats AND dogs now - in fact, I may actually take more shameless selfies with Olive than I do with Feeny. I went to the ASPCA to look for a cat right after my landlord approved me for one. I was looking for an older cat, preferably one that knew how to use the litter box already and would be cuddly without being on top of me all the time. A volunteer helped me look at the available adult cats. I will say that she was a bit pushy when it came to this step and seemed to rush my decision, but that might've been because it was especially busy that day. I found my future cat, Gus, in a room with another cat, which was awesome, as I could go in and meet him face-to-face rather than through a cage door. He was 2 years old and playful. The volunteers knew a lot about his history and could tell me why he was surrendered, which was good information to have. I ended up adopting him, and he has been an amazing cat - so well behaved, cuddly, and generally just a goofball. They gave me a collar and a tag. I didn't know what I wanted to call him yet, so I returned a few days later to return the cat carrier (which they have for rental), and they engraved it with his new name, Gus, which was very sweet! I'm giving the ASPCA 5 stars, not only for their exceptional help in education when you adopt, but for their behavioral hotline as well. Before I left, they sent me home with a huge packet on information about cats as well as food. I've had cats my whole life, but never one of my own in my own place, so this packet was super helpful! A few weeks later, Gus started waking me up very early in the morning for food (like 5:30 am!), so I called the hotline, and they gave me some great advice! He has since adjusted very well and no longer does this. I'm glad to have such an amazing cat and some amazing resources to help, if I should ever need it. read more

Came to the ASPCA on 11/15 after a horrific experience with the AC&C (my landlord screwed us and told them no big dogs allowed, even after we had confirmed the day before that they were allowed) Even after the issue was resolved and the landlord corrected herself, they would not release the Rotty-mix we wanted without written proof. Instead of making it a wasted trip to the city, we hopped in a cab and jetted down to the ASPCA! The second you walked in the door, everyone was so welcoming! I really wish I could remember our volunteers name but she had an amazing cat brooch that i LOVED!! Any who, I was here to adopt a dog so we took a view of all the dogs. Many were on hold or already adopted, but we had a few that we liked. The one that stood out to me was Hazel, the 4yo dalmatian. She had been returned over a year ago super overweight which required her to have surgery on her back legs :( She was such a sweetheart and I knew she was the one! The next day (11/16) we returned to adopt and met with the Adoption counselor Arthur who went over everything with Hazel and asked us about our lifestyles and other questions just to make sure it was a good match. We had another volunteer bring Hazel up to the play room so we were able to see her up close and personal. She was a high energy handful for the first 10 minutes (I mean I would be too if I was locked in a room for most of the day) The volunteers who worked with her also gave us tips about what kind of toys to buy as Hazel can destroy just about anything. Due to her extensive medical history, we also met with Dr. Wagner to go over everything and to ask any questions we had about her prior history, meds and diet. None of the information even slightly swayed my decision, though I was happy they were completely open and honest about Hazel's special needs. They also offered that we do the foster to adopt program which we decided to do. In the 30 days of the foster period, the ASPCA will cover all related costs (food meds, etc) and if we return her we get back the adoption fee. Once the 30 days pass, it goes through like a normal adoption. After that we went back down to the lobby, where it had become packed but all of the employees were keeping track of everything and everyone waiting. We waited about 20 minutes while all her paperwork was being done, then finally signed the contract, paid her $125 fee, and picked out her doggy tags! 10 minutes later Hazel was brought down, she had gotten the rest of her vaccinations and Heartworm treatment. We also received a prescription for her food, two bags and a case of her food, and her meds! She also is registered with her microchip, and dog license for the city. Hazel couldn't run out of the ASPCA fast enough! I could tell she was so excited and eager to be outside. On the car ride home to Queens she looked out of the window the entire ride. We stopped at Petland Discount to grab everything we needed and she was more than well behaved and friendly to the other dogs. As I'm writing this, its been almost 10 days since we've had Hazel. She's settled into our family and I couldn't ask for a better dog! Even though the ASPCA doesn't make any guarantees, she was already house-trained so we've had no issues with her going in the house. I would recommend the ASPCA to anyone looking to foster/adopt, as they really care about the animals and the homes they go to. Go adopt today and give an animal their 'fur'ever home! read more

My daughter wanted a cat so we came to submit the application before she moved to her new apartment. The volunteer, Keith, was so thorough and kind.He spent a lot of time explaining the process and cat personalities, as this was her first cat adoption. We returned a few weeks later but most of the cats she wanted were gone. There was one volunteer, Claire recommended. She was a stripey, calm looking feline with a dapper white bib of fur. "Fleurette" came to light up my daughter's life and there is no looking back. Thank you ASPCA for your care and extraordinary compassion for animals. I recently visited Wednesday evening (12.03.14) to the ASPCA in hopes of adopting a kitten. My fiance and I fell in love with Matzo (we renamed her Luna)! She greeted us immediately and we knew that she would be right for us. It was fate when we learned she was scheduled to get spayed the following day, because we were able to take her home on Friday! My advice is to come straight to the ASPCA. Avoid going to AC&C, they were not helpful at all. It was not clean and very unwelcoming. At the ASPCA, you are immediately greeted by an amazing team of volunteers. They answered any and every question and will address your concerns with confidence. Completing the adoption paperwork was quick and easy. A gentleman who was training at the time assisted with completing my paperwork. Please accept my apologies for forgetting your name, but you are simply amazing. You were sincere and very informative. There was no way that you were training! Thank you ASPCA team for making the adoption process extremely enjoyable. Wow, after reading some reviews I can see why it only has 3.5 stars, but unfortunately I think those types of things happen to ALL animal shelters. Human mistakes and just unfortunate health issues, ya know? I used to work for the AC&C (umm I didn't know at the time it was a kill shelter?!) and it was 100000000000x worse than the ASPCA. I'm giving the ASPCA 5 stars because I've seen SO MUCH WORSE. I was looking for a kitten and OMG, I saw cat hoarders, dirty nasty "shelters" and crazy cat ladies. So YES, ASPCA is the BEST possible place you can get a pet, TRUST ME. First of all, I was getting disgusted glares because I only wanted 1 cat. Well, sor-ry that I only want to save ONE life for my teeny tiny apartment! I wanted my husband to have a good experience since he's never owned before, and going from zero to 2 kitties might be too much for him. I am PERFECTLY aware of the benefit of having 2 kitties, but it's also much more responsibility (plus financially more) to take care of two live things for the next 15+ years. I love how ASPCA allows you to adopt one cat, but IF you choose to get 2 it's free! That is a much better way to encourage people to get 2 kitten, instead of making them feel like crap just because they only want 1 kitten. I never felt judged there, and they are so sweet and kind! After seeing the roach infested "shelters" from Petfinders, I realized there's a reason why it costs $125 for a clean, sanitized, well fed kitty. It is ABSOLUTELY worth it to go this way, through a major organization, than picking up a free cat off of some crazy lady on the UWS. First of all, they probably went through a whole lotta legal crap to have such clean cages and friendly staff. Other shelters smell like pee and are struggling to even have 1 person to take care of 20+ pets because they're understaffed. (By the way, understaffed always means long lines, impatient customers and moody employees.) ASCPA is gorgeous in comparison. They give you a "goody bag" full of the kitty's current dry food and wet food and some materials on cat care. They give you a mini orientation and officially congratulate you, as if you've received a real human baby! I love the formality of it, because people should know that this is accepting a large responsibility. I agree on all of their cat caring advice and love how they don't pressure you or force you to take on a dying/older cat, but just nod in response even when you say "umm sorry but I just want a really cute baby kitten just like everyone else." They understand. I will fully support them 100% I even want to write them a Thank You note and picture because they served me so well and so patiently. I kept going back almost everyday to find my adorable kitten, and she's the sweetest thing ever and I love her to death!! (see pic) Thank you ASPCA!! read more
