Waaay overpriced for what you get. Bought a 2009 CVPI with about 73k miles and 2k idle hours. I understand they are used cars and not new, but I doubt he inspects the cars like he states. Paperwork and delivery went smooth. Then the problems.In inspecting the car, there was no spare tire or jack. I bought them. No sweat about $300. I got 2 starts out of the car and the battery was outdated and dead. Got a jump a bought a new battery. $250 About 500 miles later, the car starts to hiccup. Needs new plugs and coils. Replaced them. While my mechanic was inspecting the fuel system, ALL fuel injectors were bad. Two of them were even glued on. Also found EGR tube was nearly sheered off. Replaced all with new fuel filter at around $2k. About 1000 miles in, the starter goes out. Another $600. All is fine until a couple months later and bank 2 catalytic converter is shot. Exhaust shop states it should have been replaced long ago. $1500. Needs wheel alignment and suspension. When I got the car, it pulls to the right. Plus's. Low miles. Mechanic did a leak down test. No leaks in all cylinders. Flex fuel. Currently paying $2.79 per gallon at about 18 miles per. These cars are at most $4K and nothing more. read more

Our family has been interested in getting a used Crown Vic Police Interceptor (CVPI) for a while, and we had looked at a few local examples for sale by owners and were not very impressed. This Fall, our High School sophomore passed his Learner's Permit Knowledge Exam and we started seriously searching for CVPI's. We discovered Wild Rose Motors and due to the quality, pricing and descriptions of their inventory, we made an appointment to head over to Anaheim and take a look. We met Seton Montgomerie, a unique and colorful gentleman, who has been refurbishing CVPIs for years, and it immediately became clear that this business is more than just a used car place. Seton patiently answered all of our questions and entertained us with stories and anecdotes, while identifying what we needed and wanted in a car. We were able to test drive several vehicles he had in stock that met our criteria, and we ended up with a 2011 low-mileage Gunmetal Gray beauty that was clean, quiet, and most importantly, balanced in handling and control. We were able to drive it off the lot the same day, and are very happy customers! Although we purchased our CVPI "as-is", when we reached out to Seton about a few things we wanted to get taken care of a couple of months later (refitting the original rear door locking mechanisms, so rear passengers could open their own doors, fixing a misfiring cylinder - apparently a fairly common problem with these cars, and a scraping noise in one of the front brakes) he invited us to bring the car around, and provided a loaner for us while it was getting worked on. He took care of everything, including blowing loose a small pebble that was caught in the brake mechanism, and then replacing the brake pads as well, and when we returned to pick up the car, he merely handed us the key, saying not to worry about payment. That is some fantastic service, and I can't say enough good things about Seton. He's the real deal, and if you spend some time with him, he'll charm you with stories and reminiscences from his past. He's unique. He's original. He's one of the good guys that still wants to take care of people. I dropped off a car with a blown radiator and horrible transmission slippage on a Monday. Seton offered to service the transmission instead of replacing it like other shops would have. For a very reasonable price, the car was done on Wednesday with a fully serviced transmission, new radiator, and water pump. It has driven perfectly ever since and not slipped once. I was sold a a complete lemon. Read this whole story if you're considering buying a car from them. I bought a car from him in with 73,000 miles on it. I was told the whole sales routine of these cars are tanks and are very easy and cheap to repair, and generally run to 300k miles. I bought it for $8000 cash with 73,000 miles on it. Seemed like a good deal. I drove the car 17k miles and very moderately over the course of 3 years. I took very good care of the car as well, and repaired and serviced it regularly. The whole engine died at 90,000 miles. After I only drove 17,000 miles! Systematically the car started falling apart the day I drove it away. It completely died the next day after purchase. Turns out the battery was completely bad and wouldn't even hold a charge. They sold me a car with an old dead battery. I had to buy a new battery, put it in the car, drive an hour back to Anehiem where they're located, get a newish battery from them, then return the one I just bought. Took a whole day. The AC condenser and compressor broke within a year of having the car. I had to redo the whole AC system and hoses ($800-$1000) The car had a radiator leak when sold to me. Turns out the leak was really bad and I had to have the whole intake manifold replaced because of it, as well as the leak fixed. ($800) Drivers window harness broke ($125). Window switches start going bad, left them alone. It was sold with bald tires, add tires and all the other tune ups and spark plugs and oil changes over time Ive done to the car, also had it painted. With all that and maintenance, $4000 extra after I bought the car. All on a car that cost $8000. Total of $12000 spent. So one day out of nowhere the car just doesn't start at 90,000 miles. I have it towed to the closest mechanic because Im far from home. They can't figure it out. Waste $400 in several tows and diagnostic expenses. I get Desperate and call "Wild Rose Motors" where I bought the car from. Im sitting on a dead car that Ive spent $12000 on. He says he'll take care of it and have it towed to him, I do that. Im then told the "timing chain broke" and the pistons weren't firing correctly and got damaged because of that. Replace pistons for $1800 or whole engine for $1900. I went with the engine. After the engine, labor and the diagnostic fees from Wild Rose, $3200. After I pay that and I go to pick it up, the check engine light is on. Im then told 3 out of 4 of my "Oxygen sensors are bad." $650 to replace all 4. I pay that. $3850 total. I couldn't believe I went to go pick my car up with a newer engine, and the check engine light is still on, then he charges me more to fix it. $15,850 total on the car now. Over the course of the next few days with the "newer" engine, the car keeps dying over and over while driving it. I take it back to him. He said the "idle air sensor is bad." He replaced it with an old used one from another car, I was shocked he didn't charge me and actually took some responsibility for the car. Im driving away and the car dies again. I take it right back, he then tells me its my alternator is going bad and he can replace that "for a fee." I opted not to. Mind the car never randomly died before they put the newer engine in. The "newer" engine then starts leaking oil so bad I had to take it back to him again. They told me they replaced all the seals in the engine, but its still leaking. I live an hour away and getting rides back and forth to my car is very hard. I finally took the car to a ford specialist. He told me the problem of the car without him even looking at it. He thought the engine replaced was shotty work. I Paid the specialist to fix the alternator but the car just keeps dying. I take it back to Wild Rose for about the 4th time.I had to find the problem online and tell him what it was to fix it! When you have to spend as much $ on a car as the worth of the car, its considered a lemon. The newer engine they put in doesn't seem to be living up to what he said it was either. Wild Rose couldn't fix it unless I threw more $ at random problems that wouldnt seem to fix it. He mis diagnosed the alternator, I wasn't going to give him more $ now. I should of scrapped the car when the "engine went bad." In my opinion, they're fixing their cars just enough to sell them, and they're not reliable at all. Cop cars are driven very aggressive over the years and take beatings, way more then any other used car. They also have tons of added electronics which are hard to diagnose when problems arise. These problems are expensive to fix. Wild Rose doesn't assume any responsibility once you leave and I can guarantee you, you will encounter expensive problems because these cars require specialist. Wild Rose was nothing but trouble and a $ pit with fixing the engine. $16,000 spent 100 hours wasted. Everyone there is really nice and dis arming, but they'll probably say none of this story is true but I have no reason to lie. Beware of this place. read more

First, Wild Rose is not closed; it has moved to Anaheim. The new address is 3901 East La Palma Avenue, Anaheim, California, 92807. I told Yelp as much, but they haven't changed anything. I'll repost this at the other Wild Rose entry. I have a 02 TDI Golf with 126k on the clock. My fuel pump started leaking, as they do. Two regular mechanics and a dealership told me they'd have to order a new pump, and that the job would be at least $3k, just to replace the pump. I called up Leonard Harview at Wild Rose, and I can say I'm not going to anyone else from here on out. Not only did he reseal the existing pump--which, by the way, was fine, aside from the gasket--for much less, he also spotted that my radiator hoses had been leaked on by the diesel. This mushrooms out the ends and degrades the rubber so that, as Leonard put it, "it'll die on you when you're in the middle of the desert." He also went through 100k miles' worth of car's service history paperwork with me (I'm the 3rd owner) to make sure the water pump was replaced at 80k miles along with the timing belt, and to look for anything else that needed to be done while he had it apart. There was no evidence that the pump had ever been replaced, so he recommended I do that, and he spotted that whoever did my timing belt forgot to change the serpentine belt. Not good if you want to have a functioning AC, power steering, and alternator. All of this work, including parts, was $1400. That is much, much less than I was preparing myself to pay somewhere else, and they probably would not have had the good eye for proper maintenance that he did. I will add something else. While I was talking to Leonard, he had to pick up a call, and being the eavesdropper that I am, I listened. After he listened for a minute, he told whomever was on the other end of the line that he would recommend they not do whatever, because it would be dishonest, not the right way to do business, and he thought would ultimately come back to get them. Considering my interactions with the man and the fair way he treated me, the right things he said on the phone seemed congruent with my own experience. I believe Leonard takes an honest, ripoff-free business philosophy very seriously, and it shows. Not only that, but he clearly loves VW TDIs, so we have that in common too. Leonard is the quality mechanic for your TDI that you have been looking for. ps. In full disclosure, he did forget to reseat a clamp on the turbo intake hose, and it resulted in a few days of weirdness in my car. I called him up on a Saturday, he came in to see the car, and he fixed it in about 3 minutes and refused to charge me. Still 5/5 stars, all the way. read more

I took my 2000 Jetta TDI from Santa Monica to Whittier based on the incredible Yelp reviews. My car would be really rough starting after sitting overnight--not mission critical, but I thought it would be nice to get it fixed. Long story short, after more than 3 weeks, 3 round trips to Whittier (for a total of 10 hours of drive time for me and a friend to drive me home), several calls (all initiated by me, because he never once called to let me know the car was finished or to give an update, even after 5 days), an incident of diesel shooting out of my car and streaming down the street, and $2000 later, my car now starts WORSE than it did before! I recognize that it's not Leonard's fault that I live 1.5+ hours away, and so three round trips to his shop cost me 10 hours. But when I suggested he might want to offer something in exchange for all this hassle over 3 weeks, he swore at me and accused me of trying to extort free services out of him! At one point, the car was running about 75% better, but then after the fuel line broke (just after he worked on the fuel system), it was never the same. He treated me so poorly, I don't dare go back again to ask him to figure out why the car is now worse than when I brought it in. He seems like he's a very knowledgable mechanic, but this was a terrible experience -- never again! read more

Leonard Harviex has been around the VW TDI circuit for quite a while now - he's known as a guru on TDI forums like www.tdiclub.com and very well respected. Being fairly new to the diesel market and the proud new owner of a 2000 Golf TDI, I thought I would see what the fuss was all about. First of all, his laidback manner was a huge (and welcomed) change from the others. As Matt says, he not only fixes them, he sells them as well. To be frank, you'll be hard pressed to find used TDI's in better condition in all of California - believe me - I looked (for 2 months, 2 hours/day)!!! When I test drove the car, he handed me the keys, gave me instructions on how to get to the freeway (and back) and sent us on our way... Talk about trust! In terms of service, he literally walks you through (under, to be exact) various issues with the car, things that need to be changed immeadiately, things that you should keep and eye on and things you can upgrade. There were a few times he actually showed me broken/damaged/cracked pieces of piping before tossing them - while explaining what could have went wrong. He fixed my broken key fob (my request), the speaker wire the VW Dealer FORGOT to plug back in (my request) and even the tension of the driver side door (had no idea it was too tight...). I obviously didn't purchase my car from Wild Rose (and suffered 2 hours of anxiety as he looked at my car), but Leonard was gracious and full of helpful advice. All this for a little over $100. Not bad considering the price of VW Parts! It is a bit of a bummer that he's so far away, but in this case, its worth driving the extra bit to know your car is taken care of by someone who is obviously passionate about these cars and knows his sh*t. Also. Glamerous, the location is not. Its a bit hidden and not much to look at but if you're looking for quality work at reasonable prices and a great reputation, go to Wild Rose. If you want a spiffy waiting area with free coffee, questionable quality (work) and suits with fake smiles milling around, go to the dealer. I'm not biased. Really. ; ) read more

We bought our 2001 Golf TDI from Leonard, and everything else that has been said in these reviews is dead on. In fact, once, Leonard was on vacation, and I needed some work done. So I called around town looking for another TDI expert. Every single place that I called said, "You know, there is a guy in Fullerton, Leonard, you should call him." Leonard is the guy that OTHER mechanics call, he is even the goto guy for dealerships smart enough to realize they don't know crap about TDIs. He has a new garage now too, it's nice! My car needed a transmission rebuild after it died suddenly. I called several local places, and I was concerned by what the mechanics told me about the complexities of fixing an automatic transmission. Two mechanics told me to call someone else, one gave me a low price, and two others gave me a reasonable price, but they did not sound very confident. I then called Wild Rose and I was very impressed by their knowledge. I got the car towed to their shop and they had it fixed in no time. They also went above and beyond by finding out the transmission wiring harness was wrong for the car (and may have caused the transmission to fail in the first place) and they fix that too! I've owned several crown vice and was always a bit interested in what wild ride had to offer given that they specialize in these cars. The first thing I noticed is that this guy charges 6 or 7 thousand for a car you can get for 2500 to 3000 dollars all day long. Second when talking to the owner I noticed several large "gaps" and discrepancies in his numbers. Lastly I called one time and he thought he had hung up the phone. I took my 2003 VW Golf TDI fuel injection to his shop and paid him $300.00 to get it fix. He asked for $300 and I gave him $300, I just wanted the injection fixed. About a week later, Leonard called me and told me my injection was ready. 1 hour and 30 minutes later and 60 miles later I got to pick up my injection. I had the injection installed in the car, but now the car was running way worst. I called Leonard and he told me to take the car to his shop. I towed the TDI to Whittier and Leonard said he just had to fine-tune the injection. Six hours later he called me and asked to return to his shop. He immediately told the engine was bad and he could get me a new engine installed. Remember, the TDI had injection issues, now he wants to sell me a new TDI engine. Leonard refused to reimburse me and claimed the injection was now good, and insisted I needed a new engine. I contacted Diesel Injection Fuel Service in Portland, Oregon and told them about my issue. They informed me that Leonard does not know and cannot perform any legit injection related work, as he does not have the right equipment or training. Leonard usually ships the injections to Oregon to get them fixed and Leonard is just a middle person making money. Anyhow, I FedEx my injection to Oregon and got it back within a week. I installed the injection back on my TDI and the engine started right up. Leonard is a scumbag and a liar, so do not put any more money in his pockets. read more

I used to go to another mechanic who said they worked on TDIs. I had them replace my timing belt. After their third attempt to properly time my car failed I started searching around and found wild rose. They were amazing! They recommended starting from the beginning with new parts, I am so glad we did! They found so many issues with brand new parts being damaged and installed improperly it saved me so much time and money I would have lost if I wanted them to keep the parts from the other place.
