The menu at Shiok Express is limited and heavy on meat, which doesn't work so well for me as I'm Pescatarian. Consequently, we made a stop at Golden Pita just outside Lougheed Mall so that I could grab something there for my lunch while my husband would eat food from Shiok Express. It's a small restaurant but there are a few tables there if you'd like to sit and eat there. They've got one of those things that stands upright and rotates while holding a big chunk of meat on it. That's something I used to enjoy back when I was a meat eater. It definitely caught my husband's eye. If he hadn't already been set on eat at Shiok Express that day, I think he would have ordered some kind of meat dish from Golden Pita, so he could have the meat carved freshly from that rotating thingy...(I really need to figure out the proper word for that thingy!) I ordered the Vegan Special which came with 3 pieces of falafel, a spinach pie, stuffed grape leaf, tabbouleh salad, rice, pita bread and hummus and tahini dips. This was a wonderful meal and I highly recommend it. Even the rice was tasty. This one order gives you so much variety. The only thing I didn't like was the tabbouleh salad. There was too much parsley in this salad. Everything else was delicious and I really hope to go back there again sometime! Service: Fair Parking: Plentiful and free. Location: Convenient. Lots of shops and places to eat both at Lougheed Mall and in the surrounding area.

I'm often surprised at how good food can be at these little nondescript places. Now, before you rush over here, just remember to watch your step when you enter the shop as there's a small step down that's easy to miss. On my first visit, I ordered the Lamb Gyro ($6.99) which is served on tikka naan bread unlike their donairs that are served in a pita. This wrap includes lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and sweet banana peppers along with the slices of spiced lamb meat. The gyro was creamy from the sauce and I liked the grilled naan bread that it was served in... overall, a really good gyro. I returned for a revisit to try their Chicken Kebab Platter ($11.99) which is a large serving of salad, rice, and potatoes. The tender spiced chicken was quite good and the meat wasn't dry (which is often a problem I find with chicken kebab platters). There was a pleasant aroma when they brought this to my table and the hot sauce was really on point. This platter also comes with a serving of grilled pita bread and a crisp salad with a tart vinaigrette. There's a lot of food in this platter and it's quite filling. Normally, I'm not into eating a lot of potatoes but the lemon garlic potatoes (which are cut super thick) turned out to be really good. It was another 4 months before I returned here (but I'm not sure why). I remember that I enjoyed their gyro last time (which is served in a grilled naan bread and served taco-style) so I ordered the Beef Gyro. Similar to my experience with their lamb version, there was crisp lettuce, tomato, onions, tzatziki sauce, and hot sauce which was held together within the naan bread. Having had their gyro twice, I figured I should at least try their donair... specifically, the Chicken Doneras ($6.99) which is very similar to the gyro but served in a pita wrap. They have a number of different donairs but this is one of their standards with just meat and veggies on the inside. Compared to the gyro, the pita wrap is slightly thinner than the naan but easier to hold and eat. I'm not sure why, but on all of my visits, this place was relatively quiet.

I've tried the Spanish, Butter Chicken, Labanese Donair and the Chicken platter and my tastebuds were tickled! The donairs (or doneras) were all grilled to perfection, had the right amounts of meat, veggies and sauce in every bite, and were bigger than any other donair place I've tried! Best part was, the price couldn't be beat! The people working there treated you just like family. They were welcoming, generous hosts and even have a couch and video games for you to feel at home. Their laid-back attitude and friendly smiles are a definite bonus and it's something you don't see too often at other food joints. Definitely go here if you're looking for a good place to eat that won't break the bank. They even do take out and delivery! This place has got you covered!

I think they are known for the Halifax donair or at least it comes very close to it. I first tried the donair several years ago and remembered it as very big. Taste wise, it was ok. It used to be a bigger place with dine in area. Now it's half the size with only a take out window. We ordered the large rice platter with chicken. It came with a can of pop for $16.50. Portion was good, enough for 2 small eaters or two small meals. I was initially disappointed to see white rice as other places version were with dill or yellow spiced rice. But the white rice was not bland, it was very flavorful and went really well with the meat and sauces. I liked how we were given pieces of chicken which were nicely charred on the edges. Not dry at all. I will get the rice platter again. Maybe I'll give the donair another try in future.

I just told her I don't like it... the rice plate comes with a pop, I told her that we would like 3 Coke Zero to go with the meal. She decided to be funny & told me that she doesn't have any. I pointed out to her that the Coke Zero is on the top shelf, I can see it clearly. The next thing she did was ask me which plate is mine. Then she pretends to put onions on it (thinking it was really funny). By this time, I felt belittle & harass for not liking onion. I just kept quiet, didn't want her to spit on my food. The food was ok, it was not outstanding that I need to go back & be belittled for not liking onions. I will take my business elsewhere. I tried calling the place to speak with the owner several times but was unsuccessful.

It's especially good if you have a group of people dining with you. That way you can share different dishes and enjoy lots of different flavors. The Mixed Plate is especially good for that. I have seen from their menu online that they also offer something called Padisha's Table which requires a minimum of 4 adults ordering it, and costs $36 per person. For this visit we had the following: Beyti Sarma Small Mixed Plate Cheese Lovers Pide Lamb Durum Wrap Veggie Guvech Turkish Coffee Turkish Tea The Small Mixed Plate came with a humungous slab of lavash bread! It was crazy how big this piece of bread was. We were a group of 5 people and this Small Mixed Plate by itself could have been our lunch. It was such a huge piece of bread. Sooo good though. They baked it in the oven until it got all nice and puffy, and it came to our table piping hot. I always enjoy this Mixed Plate starter. It comes with such a nice variety of dips. My absolute favorite dip though is the Baba Ghannush. I think next time I eat at this restaurant, I will add on a separate order of the Baba Ghannush so I enjoy more of it than what comes in the Mixed Plate starter! I loved my Veggie Guvech. The veggies were roasted and baked to perfection. I'm someone who likes my food soft, so I was happy to find that the veggies in this dish were nice and soft. The menu description says that this dish comes with Lavash. I didn't see any more Lavash bread come other than the huge slab that came with our Small Mixed Plate. Perhaps they did this on purpose though. The one huge piece of bread is equivalent to several smaller pieces that you might get in other restaurants. I certainly didn't need anything more than the huge piece of bread we'd already been served, so was very glad not to see anything else come with my Veggie Guvech. If you're a cheese love, you can't go wrong with the Cheese Lovers Pide. It's our daughter's "go to" dish when we order from this restaurant. She really loves her cheese! The people who ordered Lamb Durum Wrap said the lamb inside their wraps was very moist and tender. I do recall also hearing good things about lamb dishes from this restaurant in the past, when we ordered takeout from them. The Turkish Coffee and Tea come in some beautifully designed cups. I have travelled to Turkey in the past and enjoyed a hot apple tea in a Turkish Tea cup. The cup that was used here was very much like the cup I drank from in Turkey. I never had coffee when I was in Turkey, but judging from how unique the design of the cup here was, it's probably a very traditional design for a Turkish coffee cup since the Turkish Tea cup was just like the ones I saw in Turkey. Highly recommend this place! There aren't a lot of Turkish restaurants within Metro Vancouver. This place is an absolute gem!

First, the couscous is not the usual couscous we've all had. This is Lebanese couscous, which is so different as to be unrecognizable as "couscous". It is so very good, I could have a whole meal of that and be happy. I generally prefer baked falafels, but this fried one was great; crispy on the outside, and soft and green on the inside. I've avoided dolma in the past, as I had it once years ago and it was terrible. But this dolma was good enough for me to stop avoiding it in the future. People were very nice, and it took less than 10 minutes for my order to be ready. It's a grocery store with a deep selection of many items, such as spices, pastas, canned fish, .... (see photos). I enjoyed this enough, I came back again about a week later for another Sampler Plate meal. My only slight peeves are, I wish there were a bit more to the salad (which isn't even listed as one of the sampler items, so a bit hard to complain!), and that the pita had some whole grains in it (I find white wheat boring).
