It's really small- you can fly through this place in 20 minutes. It's not worth driving far to see but if your in or around the area- definitely come check it out. There are two kinds of tickets you can purchase one to just see and one where you can actually pet and hold the animals- get that ticket. They have people that come around to assist in that. It's a great place for interacting with the animals as you can't get that experience at the zoo but very few animals here. I'd say about maybe 10 animals and about 5 you can interact with. It's located in a residential area, you park along the street in front of other people's houses. The place itself is the size of a small house with yard. Just to give you an idea of what to expect. They had a cage of little foxes... so cute but right next to that cage is the biggest snake I"ve ever seen in my life and those little foxes just sat there staring at the snake and the snake staring at them. :( read more

One of the best Groupon purchases I've ever made. I'm so happy I found the Wildlife Learning Center and I will tell anyone I meet that it's totally worth the trek to Sylmar. PRO-TIP: This can be an AMAZING date spot, especially if your guy/gal is in to animals. For as low as $25+admission, you can have a one-on-one animal experience for up to four people. There's also a number of classes/camps that you can take. Follow them on Facebook for more info. I'm currently in the $150 Adult Zoology class which meets once a week for five weeks. In the first class, I got to touch and learn about nine different animals! PARKING: This tiny zoo is located in a mostly residential area of Sylmar, so for the moment parking is unrestricted residential street parking. However, the Center is currently expanding their facility to have a dedicated parking lot. PRICES: Currently admission is $7 for adults, $6 for children under 13, and free for kids 2 and under. If you're an animal lover, there's also one-on-one animal experiences for 1 - 4 people, ranging in price from $25 to $100. $25 animals include: Prairie Dog, Porcupine, Armadillo, Alligator. $30: Owl. $35: Python, Hedgehog/Sugar Glider/Chinchilla, Fennec Fox. $50: Sloth. $100 Siberian Lynx, 16ft Python for 5 to 10 people. STAFF: Every staff member that I spoke to or encountered was incredible friendly and more importantly KNOWLEDGABLE! Every hour or so, a staff member brings out an animal and talks about it, answering questions and sometimes letting the audience touch the animal. When I was there, we got to see/touch two different snakes. OVERVIEW: The Wildlife Learning Center is unparalleled for opportunities in LA to have an affordable one-on-one experience with an exotic/wild animal. It's a great place to take your family, your significant other, or a first date. The staff is friendly and knowledgable and you won't start feeling sad for the caged animals like you would at a larger, less personal zoo. The animals are active and happy and a joy to watch. The only reason I went to that place is because of all the shining 5 stars reviews they received here. That is very misleading. I suspect either these people feel so undeserving for anything for their money or they are somehow related to the zoo operators. Specifically: 1. It does not seem like the animals are happy there. They are confined in a VERY small cages. 2. Nobody greets you when you enter. I came with my 2 year old and 4 year old. They were very excited and happy. No smiles no nothing, just they tell you you have to pay so and so - even LA Zoo are more friendly. 3. This is not even a mini zoo, I can have a bigger one in my back yard. The animals are probably unhappy because the cages are very small. The crocodile lives in a bath that is the same size as his body. I mean animals place are in the wild but at least you can do something to make them feel at little bit at home RIGHT? 4. We have not seen any snakes either - my 4 years old is very interested in invertebrates. 5. They decided that the owl needs some privacy and if you want to see him you have to pay extra then the owl is o.k with that (after all it is considered a smart animal). 6. All in all that was a 10-15 minutes walk to see all the animals. Not much fun!!! The bitterest part was the zoo keeper showed the fox to what seemed to be a group of people, my 2 years old was very curious and wanted to have closer glance. The zoo keeper said sorry that the presentation is for group tours only! After all my guy just wanted to have a closer look at the fox since he did not see much interesting other stuff anyway right? Don't go. LA zoo is way better. The best zoo I have seen in the one in Palm Springs if you are there you got to check it out. A friend told me about this place and I thought it would be a fun little adventure for my son and I. What a surprise! This hidden little gem was only about 10 minutes from my house and I never knew it. I had driven past it dozens of times on my way to Sam's Club and had no clue that it was there. We went around 11am on a Sunday, paid $6.00 each to get in and were immediately greeted by one of the staff. I guess when they are not too busy they will actually walk you through the place. It's like a mini zoo. The staffer introduced us to the animals, told us a bit about them and answered all of our questions. They also have a reptile room and one of the staffers brought out snakes, lizards and even a hedgehog for the kids to touch. It was such a great experience!!! I really appreciated how great they were with my son and making it a fun (and educational) for us. I later found out they have a few special packages where you can do a meet and greet with some of the animals. You get to feed them, take photos and hold them. It's only $25 per person!!! A very well deserved 5 star rating. The WLC is like being at someone's small private zoo with the opportunity to touch some of the animals. The entry fee to the WLC was a very affordable $12 for both me and my girl. The baby porcupines in the office immediately caught our attention... it was difficult to peel ourselves away from such cuteness. Luckily, we were the only people there on Sunday afternoon, so we received full attention from Tammy, one of the docents working there. She walked us around the property, and talked about each of the animals including funny personal anecdotes about her experiences with them. Towards the end of the little tour, she pulled out some of the snakes from the reptile exhibit for us to pet. What really clinched the 5 star rating though was when she returned from a back secret stash room with a chinchilla, a hedgehog, and a baby tortoise for us to pet. I am in love with this place. They rescue animals that cannot be reintroduced into the wild. As far as I could tell, they do not procure popular animals just to attract customers, and that makes me very happy. It's a small operation, but you can tell the staff truly cares about their animals. I was brought here as a surprise to meet Lola, their resident two-toed sloth. When I realized what was happening, I sobbed like a baby...but I'm told that lots of people cry when they meet Lola - blame Kristen Bell. For $75 you can spend 15 minutes petting her in her little house. I hope that next time I can feed her some yams. B*tches love yams. read more

Ok, to all of you guys bitching about the place being too small--IT'S NOT A ZOO. If you want a bigger place with restaurants and such, go to a zoo. This is a small place that rescues animals. This place is a mini zoo right in your backdoor! I always used to see the giraffe poking it's head up when passing by, and my mom didn't believe us crazy kids for years, but lo and behold there's a literal hidden jungle right behind the fence. The animals are exotic, the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, place is well kept and clean and they even have snacks! It's well worth the price of admission, which is cheap and they always offer deals anyway. It's a gem that needs more attention by the public so they can keep this up. What a great place! I took my eleven year old and my infant son today and we had a great time. these animals are well taken care of and the Staff is great! We paid the donation fee to get a private session with certain animals. We did the boa constrictor, porcupines, and the owl. Eva and Chris were great teachers! They were patient, kind, and eager to teach us about these animals. You can tell they love their job. We will be back again to do a private session with the other animals available. Make a donation if you visit them. It's for such a great cause! These animals otherwise could be dead somewhere. Most were rescued because people had them as illegal pets. Smh. Got a Groupon for this place and wanted to take my friends kid, but they couldn't make it so I took my boyfriend instead and we had so much fun!! LOCATION It's kind of hidden in a residential area, but there are signs and it's real close to fwy exit. STAFF We didn't deal with the staff too much, they handle the animals, but the volunteers guides are there to help and are very helpful. Our guide, Tammy I think was super nice and knowledgable and walked us through the different animal areas, answering all my dumb and weird questions with patience and a smile while my boyfriend cringed at what I was going to ask next haha ANIMALS I'm an animal welfare advocate and this is no type of zoo, but more a sanctuary for animals that are unable to go back into the wild without risk of death. They have quite a variety for such a small center, monkeys, felines, huge turtles, birds and I loved petting the hedgehog they're so cute and funny ...eww one of the volunteers was petting a cockroach!...not my cup o tea, but they have lots of interesting snakes and creepy creatures to see as well as the cute and fuzzy ones. COST Very inexpensive $6, my groupon was $6 for 2 peeps, but I would go again for sure. Check it out with or without the kids! ;o) read more

I loved visiting the Wildlife Learning Center! My roommate and I took a friend here for her birthday about a week ago. We purchased two of the animal encounters-- the Furrific Trio and Fennec Fox. It was such an amazing experience to be able to touch the animals and learn about them. I wish I caught the trainer/biologist's name who taught us about the animals. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about each animal. As he was cleaning the cages after our animal encounters, we stopped to ask him questions about the different animals he was tending to. He was willing to answer all the questions we had during our visit. This is a great way to spend an afternoon. There are even picnic tables, so be sure to pack a lunch. I fell in love with Boomer, the lynx, and am planning to come back real soon to see him! read more

Perfect place for kids! I came here today with my 18-month old. He is starting to gain interest in different animals, but he is so active and has a short attention span that I have not yet taken him to the zoo. This place was a perfect place to see if he enjoyed this type of environment, while also safe to have him walk around without a stroller. All that aside, I also enjoyed coming here. The animals here have been rescued and appear to really be taken care of. There are many different types of animals, which makes it fun. Every animal has a description, which is educational to both kids and adults. Some of the animals have names. Yes, it's small, and you could probably see everything in 15 minutes. About 15 'exhibits' - all of which are very small and not all inhabited A bit concerning that some slightly larger animals like the bob cat, alligator and sloth are in extremely confined spaces. I imagine the high ratings come from the fact that for an additional fee you can have personal one on one encounters with the animal(s) of your choosing. Every hour one of the animals is brought out for you to learn more about them and have a chance to touch them, however I don't imagine how one would stay here longer than an hour. The most interesting sighting was a giraffe, zebra and ostriches which we learned were not part of the center, just sheer coincidence that a neighbor trains exotic animals and they're not available for the public to view. Perhaps my review is also influenced by the fact that I'd visited the Gibbons Conservation about 15 miles away just before going, and was quite impressed so this was a bit of a disappointment. Although I'd recommend the gibbons center before the wildlife learning center if you're in the area. The wildlife learning center may be a good stop for 8 year olds and under and the gibbons 9 years and older (but the gibbons is kind of great for any age as well- not just kids). It's wonderful that the money for the ticket's you pay for goes to buying food for the animals that they rescued.So not only seeing and learning about so many beautiful exotic animals, you actually get to help as well when you buy a ticket to visit . I had the a great opportunity of seeing 3 huge amazing Americans bald eagles that was there the first time I visited.Sadly Some of the animals that they rescue there are going extinct. I highly recommend this place to everyone to go and check it out at least once . I've been there twice already and I'll will be going back again. read more

This a smaller place if you're used to the huge city zoos, and I think most of the animals in here were abandoned pets or animals that need rehabilitation, but I had a great experience with four other friends. That one reviewer who said that you can go though everything in 10 minutes is true, but why would you not stop and admire every animal there? I thought we would spend half an hour maximum here, but we didn't leave until they closed! It's partially because the animals are so cute, but the larger reason is that the interns and staff are so friendly and explain a lot to you about the animals there. You can ask them essentially any question and they'll know the answer! I'm an animal lover and even I learned new things. The ranger talk at 4 pm was also really cool, since they bring out reptiles and let you pet and pose with them for free. The property bordering the Center has ostriches, zebras and giraffes too but you can only peek at them though the fence since they're apparently used to shoot movies. Just a tip: don't go when it's super hot out! We went during a hot afternoon and most of the animals were napping or listless, but as the day cooled off they were more active and perky :) read more

This place is a Gem!!! Its hidden somewhere in the Foothill/Sylmar area. Great place and so close to home. We went here for a mom's group meet up and our kiddies had such a great time!!! The y were so excited to see lots of animals. The staff was great and very involved with the animals. The place is small so don't expect your going to a zoo. But they have plenty of animals for the kids to see. My only complain was the snacks. They didn't have much of a selections of food but that's my fault on my end. I should have packed food but sometimes when you're in a rush that doesn't happen. We had a great experience. Highly recommend this place and its so affordable!!!. read more

I wish I could give WLC more than 5 stars. This place is amazing, and fantastic for kids and adults. I went here for their annual fundraiser with a friend of mine who is obsessed with sloths. She wore a sloth sweatshirt. She's the real deal. As we were waiting to meet Stanley the Giraffe, the crazy thing I began noticing is that everyone there was just as enthusiastic and almost child-like in their excitement about animals -- visitors and staff alike. It's like at every new station (whether the pythons, the prairie dogs, the porcupine, the fennec fox, the owls, Lola the sloth, Kingston the monkey...) we met someone who was meeting their spirit animal for the first time. It's such a lively atmosphere, the staff is super helpful, and my friend got to spend a lot of time petting, taking photos with, and crying in the presence of Lola the sloth. Seriously, check this place out. It's a breath of fresh air. It's totally true, a few times my friend and I commented to each other that we want to live there. Parking is terrible. There are only 10 or so spaces available. And 3 were taken up by facilities own vehicles. Center is great. I would recommend for older children only because there are not that many exhibits. On older child can spend more time at each exhibit reading the plaque and learning about each animal, especially since the animals are so up close. Whereas a younger child would look for 2 seconds and then move onto the next animal. If you do that you finish the whole place in about 15 min. read more

It makes me so sad that people would give this place a negative review. Seriously, it's pretty affordable, and the employees were so kind to us!! They don't have thousands of animals, but the ones here are all rescued and well cared for. General admission to see the animals in their enclosure is very cheap -- $14 for 4 people if you purchase it on yelp! Private encounters with specific animals are more costly-- but definitely required and worth it if you want a closer look at these lovely creatures. The site is fairly small, but the animals are adorable and well care for. I highly recommend the fennec fox, sloth, and owl encounter. You get to see these animals close and personal!!! We were able to pet both the fennec fox and sloth, and it was my first time carrying an owl! It's best if you have a group of 4 people, and remember, all the money is going to proper husbandry and food for the creatures and critters! There are shady areas to escape the heat, but we went on a horrifically hot day... Be sure to bring water or buy some from the gift shop. We hid in the air conditioned reptile rooms. As for the staff, I personally thought they were fantastic. We spent most of our time with Claudia, who was very knowledgable and patient! She truly loves her job, and we were so thankful to have her show us around. :) I also enjoyed listening to the educational talks right outside the reptile house. All the employees were very polite, friendly, and informative. Lastly... There are no public bathrooms. Outhouses are available, as well as plenty of hand sanitizers. How fun!!!! I loved this place! It was pretty small, but very cheap and so much fun! We went on a day when the Make a Wish Foundation was there, so we were able to get 2 wildlife encounters for cheap! We met the little fox dude and the prarie dogs. So awesome! We got to pet them and the guide gave us some great info about them. It's definitely hidden in the Sylmar area...right in the middle of a neighborhood. There's also an area next door where I think they keep movie animals (We saw a giraffe through the fence!) They had a cage with tiny bunnies and a duck right at the entrance that you could say hi to. They recently raised the price for this place, but it is still a worth-your-money experience. It's not very big, but you can easily spend a couple of hours here. The staff here are very child-friendly. They offered my nephew opportunities to pet the tortoise and handle some of the other animals. For an extra fee they have several group "experiences," where you get more hands-on interaction with some of the animals and can even pose for a picture with a huge python. Sometimes Living Social has deals, in which you can purchase group tickets, knocking down the price a little bit. This place is probably better suited for young children. Bigger kids might not be as fascinated by some of this rescued animals. However, they did have some surprising animals, like a bald eagle who stared at us from his perch. read more

I was going to give this place 1 star but after reading some of the other reviews I feel like I would come off like a huge jerk. I guess if your kid needs to do a report on a few reptiles or animals this is an ok place to get it done. However, for me, this was the most boring place on earth. Stupid me, I drove an hour to get to this hole-in-the-wall zoo. I really do not understand why people like this place so much. It literally takes 10 minutes to see each animal. I couldn't believe how small this place was. My backyard in my old house was bigger than this. Yes, it is very inexpensive to get in but that's because they only have like 12 zoo animals to look at. Unless your kid needs to see a few animals for a book report I suggest you save your gas money and admission fee and head to a real zoo. P.S. They call it the Wildlife Learning Center because a handful of times a day a member of the staff will present for 5 minutes on one of the species they have at the zoo and let you touch it. And we saw this one lady who works there, who never get the time to atleast say hi to us or greet us or something, it's our first time there and brought my son cos I thought he's gonna get the chance to see or touch some animals, but no... We tried talking to the lady but I don't know if she heard us, slammed the door in the sloth's house... But I know that she saw us looking at the window, still... Nothing... She did nothing... A friend of mine told me about the "Embroidery with Zeus" class they were having and we signed right up! It was really wonderful with mimosas, a little quality time with their blind screech owl, Zeus, and a nice helpful instructor. It started right before the zoo opened so it was quiet and tranquil (well until they fed the monkeys!). We wondered around for bit after and I fell in love with the Canadian Gray Fox and the bobcat. It's not a big facility but it was really close to where I live and I enjoyed watching some close encounters they were hosting with the porcupines and the tawny owl. I definitely recommend this place for a fun and unexpected adventure in Sylmar! read more

The staff was phenomenal in providing guidance as to how to start our walk through the center and when to expect the hourly talk. My kids and I were a bit disappointed in the WLC, though. Most of the animals are caged... for good reason. You don't want the animals or the humans to be hurt, however, it was sad to see most of the animals in such small, constrained quarters. Some of the animals looked bored or restless and having seen these animals in bigger spaces elsewhere just magnified the restrictions with which they live there. That said, all of the animals look like they're being well taken care of. They all look healthy. read more

We came here solely for the Sloth Social and got to meet Lola the Sloth. Our trainer Kyle was very informative and answered all my dumb questions. Especially my question about how Lola the Sloth poops. This was a rare and great experience for my friend and I. Where else can you have such an intimate setting with a particular animal. All of the cost would go directly towards the animals needs and care. I would highly recommend you try an individual animal experience. Take as many pictures and ask questions during the individual animal experience! You will never get up close and personal to these animals without this unique experience, unless you're Tarzan and Jane. Be sure to call before your visit to double check the animals availability. This would is a great date idea or birthday surprise for anyone who is looking to do something out of the ordinary instead of material presents. The center is small, so don't assume you can spend all day here like a zoo. Majority of these animals are here because the center provides sanctuary and a home for life for rescued animals that cannot be reintroduced into the wild due to injury. Not solely for your entertainment. Its a great cause. On a weekday, we got here before the top of the hour and left a hour later. Beating traffic to and from; coming from the San Gabriel Valley. Meaning, we got to experience a trainer talk, a Sloth social, enjoy the entire center at our own pace, and ended the visit with another trainer talk. If that's not time management, then I don't want to know what is. The price of admission is very reasonable. Feeding animals, maintaining, paying workers, and keeping this center must cost hundreds or even thousands. They offer Senior discounts and for military Veterans too! As a Veteran myself, you don't come across any places that offer that. I hate it when places say they "Support the Troops" while only offering discounts to ONLY active duty members. Seriously? Come on! I never got any chance to enjoy discounts and support because I was actively serving overseas! I was deployed away from home and family my entire enlistment! A big thank you from the bottom of my heart to the Wildlife Learning Center for offering that to us. Anyway...the bathroom is a giant porter potty. They have gallon jar of hand sanitzer and Febreeze! Parking is on the street or along their wooden fence. They have a small gift shop which offers stuff animals, t shirts, snacks, and drinks Lastly, they have two Bald Eagles. I had a great time at the center today! We paid the extra $100 to interact with the sloths, and since they're my favorite animals I had an absolutely amazing time!! Though it's small, the animals seem well cared for and happy and I left feeling better about the animals' wellbeing than I do when I leave a zoo. This is a great little animal sanctuary with just enough animals to entertain the kids for a few hours. It seems like a great place for a birthday party, and a few people in our group did a private animal encounter session and reported back amazing things. Just hanging out in the reptile room we were able to watch the workers transport a giant boa constrictor, and a volunteer brought out a hedgehog for us to coo at. IN. LOVE. WITH. THIS. PLACE. I raised a rescue fox (insta: @konathefox ) in Utah, and needed to rehome her. I looked and looked for MONTHS all over SoCal for the perfect place. I've spent a lot of time working with animal sanctuaries, so I know what to look for, and this place is AMAZING. Really. I placed Kona (the fox) here to stay with them, and she is like my BABY and they are SO great with her, and all of the animals! The employees are all biologists (I think), and they really LOVE animals, and you can feel it! It's a smaller place, so great to take kids. They also have animal showings in the afternoons, where you can meet reptiles or other creatures! It's SO affordable too! And they have animal encounters, and you can pay to meet ADORABLE AMAZING ANIMALS, but they only bring out animals that like people, so it's not stressful for them. We had such a fun time here!! We met tatu the armadillo, the porcupine family, zig-zag the boa constrictor and of course our visit wouldn't be complete without meeting Lola, the sloth! Our guide Ariel was fun and we learned a lot from her. My kids and I had a great time! I hope to come back soon and take part in other animal meet and greets. read more
