On a Sunday in the Shoals area, especially Florence Alabama, not much is open. It is a church town, and you have to dig for signs of life. On Yelp I found that Wildwood tavern was open and very nearby our hotel, the GunRunner. My husband and I decided to walk, and I'm glad we did. We found the sidewalk area to the entrance of the bar to be so beautiful and charming. You enter the bar and it is small, but very warm, colorful, and welcoming. There is not a lot of table service- you do have to order everything at the bar. We got a table and ordered some dinner, which I might reserve for late night dining in the future- maybe not for a main meal. We made friends with some folks at the bar, who bought us some tequila shots. They gave us suggestions of local attractions to see, and told us the best times to see them. We did not make it to the game room area, but it did look very friendly and fun. Dogs are welcome so we got to pet an adorable Golden retriever. Their whole food menu is flatbreads and hot dogs and a few sandwiches kind of all with the same 10 different treatments. I had the jalapeno popper dog on a poppy seed bun, which I should have had two of! Very good. My husband had a pizza with pepperoni. Something that I loved about this bar was that it felt like an "everyone bar". I saw straight people, LGBTQIA+ people, locals and out of town guests alike. It made me feel safe and comfortable when out of my element. We walked back to the hotel via an alley which was painted colorfully and made for some great Instagram posts! Friday night with friends. Had an unfortunate incident where one of my friends was SAd by a customer. Once alerted, staff responded in the best way possible. Aggressor was promptly kicked out of the bar and banned. We got regular updates. They were super professional. Wild wood is my go to place and there's a reason. Best bar in town. I've been to Wildwood more and more since moving back to town, and it's quickly become everyone's favorite bar in Florence. Courtney, Seth, Red and the rest of the attending gang are a tight nit family and help keep this place jamming even when it's slow. The beer tap is always rotating and something new. PBR is $2.00 always (ask for lime) [$7 pitcher!]. The hot dogs are dope, as is the artwork lining the walls. I love this place, and you'll probably see me there next time you're in for a visit. We stopped by the Wildwood Tavern today solely based on the yelp reviews. We grabbed a booth about ten feet from the bar. We sat there for 15 minutes and no one even acknowledged our existence. We were two of the 5 people in the whole establishment. We got up and left, still no acknowledgment. Very strange. We went around the corner and had a very excellent meal at Ricatoni's Italian Grill, which is what I would recommend you do instead of wasting your time on the Wildwood Tavern. read more

Went to the Ren fare today and decided to find some non/fare food. Made it here and it was outstanding. Bartenders knew how to make good drinks,even had the right gingerale for the Jamison. I can dig it Florence! I've been to Wildwood a couple of times but it's always been on my way back to my hotel to pickup a friend after a wild night out. On my last visit to Florence my friend suggested that we stop in for lunch and a few beers. In the light of day you could really see what this place had to offer. It was a great sunny and warm day which was perfect for walking around downtown. We decided to walk over from my B&B which was great. I love that the location is right smack dab in the middle of downtown. Upon entering, I really got to appreciate the decor. There's the bar, a couple of high top tables throughout, some booths and outside seating. It's really funky and unique. Definitely something that Florence was really lacking. We took our seats at the bar and were immediately greeted by the bartender. He was very nice and took the time to answer all of our questions. They had just had a Straight to Ale Tap Takeover the night before and still had many of the offerings tapped. We started off with two beers and began to look over the menu. They offer flatbread pizzas, sandwiches and pastas with a bunch of different takes. I tried the 9 inch Jamaican Sensation flatbread pizza. It had great flavor, a crispy crust and was just the right size. This is a great business that is really keeping Florence funky. I feel like Wildwood Tavern really speaks to a subset of Florence culture that isn't really representing and I think that's wonderful. read more
